most enjoyable "gaslight" outing in years

ms. thompson has announced on her website that she has finally decided how to approach the way her midwife and detective can interact and be together, and it shows in the sheer delight and fun rampant in this latest addition to the "gaslight" series. a sense of humor and lightheartedness, not to mention direction, that has been missing from the past several adventures returns with a vengeance, and it becomes, quite literally, a mystery for the entire family to enjoy. i really admire the way ms. thompson has evolved, not just frank and sarah, but the people in their lives as the story has progressed, and mr. and mrs. decker definitely get a chance to shine in this one.
the case itself is twisty and compelling, just the way we like it, and involves more of the "swells" that frank has learned to tolerate in his years of friendship with sarah brandt. i can't say the whodunit was much of a stumper, but it ambled along quite amiably until the end and never got too bogged down in itself. more importantly, it created many wonderful character beats that felt natural and, more importantly, well-earned after all of these years. memorable moments between frank and the deckers, frank and sarah, frank and the children and, of course, mrs. ellsworth, populate the story and kept me turning pages until i had finished the entire novel in one sitting. next may cannot come quickly enough for this long-time fan!

You will not be dissapointed (spoilers)

I was so fustrated with the last book as you can tell from my last review but Victoria Thompson has made me very happy this time. I was not dissapointed. This book reminded me of the Frank and Sarah that I used to love. More so, I loved that Malloy is actually partnering with not one Decker but all three! It was a joy to read this book and to see Sarah and her family helping out Malloy. The interaction between Malloy and Mr. Decker was priceless and very enjoyable. I love the dialogues between Sarah and Malloy. The humor and affection is back. More so It felt like they are already accepting of the way they feel about each other without making it so obvious. Ms Thompson did a really great job in giving us a story with a dynamic that is reminiscence of the earlier books. I did not gave it 5 stars because she's making me wait till next year for a kiss and I wanted it in this book. Hope you enjoy the book as much as I did. Ms Thompson is back!

a pleasant surprise

i believe this is the 14th book on this series but it was the first one for me. i don't read many cozy historical mysteries because they tend to be depressing, have a slower pace &/or too many unlikeable characters. none of those applied here. the story captured you then it clipped along at a good pace to the conclusion. will definitely look for her next book & read the reviews on the previous ones to select another one to read in this series.
