It’s August in Savannah, Georgia—hardly the season for a traditional Southern wedding with hoopskirts and crinolines. One could die from the heat—or from a cake knife in the back...
Reagan Summerside should be devoting all her energy to her consignment shop the Prissy Fox. But when her dear friend Chantilly Parker is arrested for murder, Reagan vows to clear her name. The victim is Simon Ambrose, who’s found lying in his own wedding cake with a knife in his back.
Chantilly has motive (Simon broke her heart to marry wealthy Waynetta Waverly) and opportunity (crashing the wedding in her UPS delivery truck). And she has cake on her face, and the stolen bridesmaid dress the killer wore is in her truck. But Chantilly would never wear crinoline to kill a man!
With the help of her flamboyant auntie, KiKi, and vexing but attractive attorney Walker Boone, Reagan is determined to save her friend—before she’s forced to turn in her brown uniform for an orange jumpsuit…

Brown deftly spins the tale of Reagan's many misadventures while sleuthing, fills her story with Southern eccentrics and offers up a magnolia-laced munificence of Savannah color.

Dollycas's Thoughts
August is hot in Savannah, Georgia and the perfect temperature for MURDER!!! Duffy Brown has topped herself with the sequel to Iced Chiffon.
All of favorite characters are back and will have your sides hurting from laughter. From Aunt Kiki's Cher quotes like "Men aren't necessities, they are luxuries" to Chantilly's misguided reasoning and Reagan's adventures taking over Chantilly's parcel deliveries, this book is plum full of Southern charm and humor. Can anyone have worse luck than Reagan? Wherever she goes trouble follows close behind.
Walker Boone is starting grow on me and Bruce Willis has stolen my heart. But Waynetta Waverly, the bride to be, brings the drama to the story. Shouldn't she be more upset over the death of her groom?
This was such a fun story but be prepared once you start reading you will not be able to stop. I was so caught up in the story I missed supper
Pour yourself a sweet tea or martini, find a comfy chair and sit back and enjoy the mystery, humor and a dash of romance that fill these pages. A perfect escape!

Snarky and Fun 2nd Book
By Sapphyria
Killer in Crinolines is the second book in the Consignment Shop Mysteries by author Duffy Brown.
Still reeling from the divorce that stripped her of everything but her old Victorian home, Reagan runs a consignment shop out of the main floor of the house. When the social event of the season ~the marriage between the local rich man's daughter, Waynetta Wayerly, and Reagan's best friend's ex-boyfriend, Simon Ambrose,~requires the services of not-invited Reagan, the loss of the groom's bowtie is the least of everyone's worries. The groom, himself, its seems, has disappeared without a trace....Until he is located face down in the wedding cake with the cake knife firmly planted in his back. And his former girlfriend, Chantilly is found near the property in her UPS truck, with evidence of the wedding cake on her shirt. As the evidence mounts up against Chantilly, Reagan begins doing her own sleuthing to prove Chantilly's innocence.
In doing so, Reagan finds herself in some pretty serious predicaments. Someone knows she's asking questions about the murder and the questions are getting a little to close to home. Fortunately, she has a protector in Boone Walker, slimy yet delicious attorney of Reagan's ex-husband. Although he questions her every move (who wouldn't? She's an amateur at detection and doesn't exactly have ninja skills), he always shows up in her times of need.
As from my review of Book 1, Iced Chiffon:
The heroine, Reagan, is snarky, funny, and very enjoyable. Her love/hate relationship with Walker Boone is written so well (and continues right into Killer in Crinolines). There are definitely dynamics at work between them, although things progress very, very slowly. Her aunt KiKi, a southern socialite that teaches dancing classes in her home, is Reagan's partner-in-crime-solving. She is a martini-aholic and is just as humorous as Reagan. Walker Boone sounds like a typical lawyer but he develops well as the book moves forward. He definitely has some redeeming qualities and shows up at some of the best times to help/save/annoy Reagan.
Unlike the first one, however, I wasn't clued in to the culprit until the end when all was revealed. Duffy is an excellent writer and just gets better with this series.
This second installment of the Consignment Shop Mysteries does not disappoint!
I'm a big ban of cozy mysteries - they are one of my favorite genres, in fact - and this book fits in nicely. No sex, no language issues, no gory details, very little violence.
Quote: Boone speaking to Reagan: "Someone's not happy with Sherlock and her dancing sidekick prowling around in their affairs" (Brown. D., 2013)

I love Brown's cast of characters!
By Cathy G. Cole
First Line: Magnolia Plantation wasn't really a Southern plantation, the guests milling about the wide verandahs and lush green lawn weren't really extras from Gone with the Wind, and that wasn't Scarlett O'Hara descending the curved staircase but my auntie KiKi in a green flouncy dress with enough crinolines to cover all of Savannah.
Reagan Summerside should be devoting her time to her consignment shop, The Prissy Fox. Instead, she's raced to Magnolia Plantation on an errand of mercy, delivering a black bow tie so the wedding can get started. Since Reagan's luck is no better than mine, she manages to trip over a dead body. The groom has had a fatal encounter with a cake knife and now lies draped over his own wedding cake.
Unfortunately Reagan's best friend, UPS driver Chantilly Parker, is the prime suspect, since the groom jilted her to wed rich Waynetta Waverly. Chantilly even had plans to crash the wedding in her UPS truck. But even though Chantilly has both motive, means and attitude, Reagan knows her friend didn't commit murder and sets out to prove it. Little does she know that she's going to have two shadows throughout her sleuthing: her eccentric Auntie KiKi and Walker Boone, the lawyer Reagan loves to hate.
I enjoyed the first book in this series, Iced Chiffon, and I'm happy to say that the seeds author Duffy Brown planted in that first book have flowered beautifully in this second installment. The plot is filled with red herrings and humor, and I have to admit that I was enjoying myself so much that I forgot to put the clues together until just before the reveal. But the plot isn't the best part of Killer in Crinolines.
No, the prize for that would definitely go to Duffy Brown's cast of characters. From Reagan Summerside, a woman who can get more miles out of a huge yellow Target purse than anyone else I know, to her auntie KiKi, former roadie for Cher, dance instructor, and head gossip tweeter on the local kudzu vine, to Reagan's emotional best friend Chantilly, and on down to a pair of professional mourners, this is one group of characters to fall in love with and to laugh with. I think I had a big smile on my face almost the entire time I was reading.
Duffy Brown also has a light touch. This book is Pure-D Southern with a capital S without drowning in the vernacular speech that can turn some readers away. If you're looking for a cozy series that's light and fun, one with sparks of romance, a cast of characters you want to sit and gossip on the front porch with, and enough humor to keep you smiling for days, I have a recommendation for you: Duffy Brown's Consignment Shop mysteries!
