***Please know that this review along with the (as of now)other two for this book, are being deceptively posted as 'responses' to an advertisement article about this book. Most do not clearly state or even suggest that these reviews were taken from Amazon, but rather appear as comments with supposed (and very incorrect) dates and times that were submitted to these individual sites.***

It's very sad that these sites(none that I would use or visit) would mislead their visitors.

I bought the 2009 version, because I liked having the 2008 version. Just for a forecast of each day, you may feel like $9.99 is a bit more than you care to fork over, especially if the main draw of astrology for you is its 'entertainment' value. However, I really appreciate this sort of thing. It's fun to read a description each day, and to let it pull your attention to a different aspect of life each day. As an added bonus, when I can't decide between two things (say, going to the park on Saturday or Sunday), I find in this handy book, somewhat of a verbal coin toss. What's more, it's convenient to have this in paper form, ready to go in the morning, no clicking, browsing, startup sounds, etc.

Of the 246 pages, 113 are dedicated to the book's purpose of daily horoscopes.

The other 133 pages explain what a cusp is/whether you are one, rising signs, how and why people use astrology today, what exactly a horoscope is (I find a lot of people quick to dismiss astrology don't even understand what astrology, horoscopes, and the zodiac really are) and how they are made, the history of astrology, what astrology says about the 21st century, what each sun sign is like (good and bad), the significance of each planet in astrological terms (what they house, and what sign they rule), what the moon in each sign means, when the moon will appear in each sign this year, how to use this info. as a guide for fishing, health, daily affairs, and planting, a character analysis of Aries, and a yearly forecast of 2009.

I find these sorts of things to be constructive and worth my time, so I would recommend purchasing this book. However, if you are a cynic, rigidly pragmatic (and hey, maybe you have your reasons), or in general, not fond of embracing possibility in all of its concentrations, this book is not for you.

From Publishers Weekly
Set in 1908, bestseller Cussler and Scott's action-packed third adventure featuring Isaac Bell, head operative of the Van Dorn Detective Agency, leaves behind the railroad theme of the first two books (The Chase and The Wrecker), focusing instead on the espionage-riddled world of warship and armament manufacturing in the buildup to WWI. Someone is murdering the leading lights of America's naval research and development. When the indefatigable Bell looks into the supposed suicide of chief gun designer Arthur Langner, he uncovers a succession of possible international suspects, all of whom are attempting to disrupt America's development of a fleet of dreadnought battleships. Bell clashes with old enemies and new until the climactic battle, where he must stop a massive submarine attempting to sink the navy's newest battleship. The expanded area of interest will attract new readers to this exciting series in the Cussler franchise. (June)

From Booklist
Cussler, who made a name for himself more than 30 years ago with his Dirk Pitt thrillers, has lately been working with a variety of coauthors. With Scott, he wrote the second Isaac Bell thriller, The Wrecker (2009), which followed The Chase (2007). The Bell series has constituted a definite comeback for Cussler, whose previous novels were starting to feel a bit lethargic. This latest Bell adventure, set in 1908, continues the hot streak. Bell, the private investigator who bears more than a passing similarity to Sherlock Holmes (he's a master of disguise with a keen intellect and a knack for seeing the truth behind the misdirection), is called in to consult on a case involving the apparent suicide of a top designer of military weapons. The dead man's daughter suspects foul play, and soon Bell is convinced she's right, but can he unmask the villains and keep himself alive? Well, of course he can, but the fun is in seeing how he does it—and Cussler and Scott provide us with a ton of fun. This is a fine thriller, rich in character, period detail, and suspense. --David Pitt

About the Author

Isaac Bell is the NEW Dirk Pitt--er, well, from a hundred years ago maybe...
By Jeff Edwards
Like many, I see the name 'Clive Cussler' and think immediately: Great action, storytelling and adventure all rolled into one...however, as all of Cusslers adventures take place either in the here & now or very near future, with the Isaac Bell series, he has taken us on a trip back to the turn of the previous century--for a large portion of Cussler fans, this is an arena we are quite unfamiliar with--at least through Clive's perspective anyway. I am very much a person focused on the present and/or near future. I LOVE new and technical gadgets (much to my wife's disappointment...) and when I realized that 'The Chase' was a stand-alone adventure novel by Cussler that takes place a hundred years ago--from beginning to end--I HAVE to admit, I wasn't all that excited to read it...

...THAT was a mistake. I should've known. Clive rarely lets me down--and even when he does, in general its still better than most other stuff from so-called action/adventure authors (the first 2 Oregon Files novels comes to mind...), but with the character of Isaac Bell, we get an entirely different kind of character...a detective who is every bit as cool in the early 1900's as Dirk Pitt, Kurt Austin or Juan Cabrillo is in Post Y2K.

The Spy centers around the military in the years before America's entry into World War I. One of the premiere Battleship designers kills himself--or so it would seem. His daughter is absolutely convinced her Father did not commit suicide--and at this point, its no stretch to connect the dots that in fact he was murdered instead--but the question here is WHY? This is where the Van Dorn Detective Agency comes in. As Isaac begins the case, more deaths follow and evidence begins to mount that some inside 'Spy' is orchestrating everything...but to what end? Remember in 1908 we were quite a few years away from the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 which sparked the origin of World War I, and wasn't until 1917 before America entered the War...so what is happening and why? More than one 'Spy' is featured here, too--which COULD'VE become rather convoluted quickly, but never fear, the course of 'The Spy' is charted and nobody goes off track. We see Germany involved, Britain and even the Japanese, and it ALL seems to be connected to some secret project involving American Dreadnought battleships.

For those who have turned away from the Isaac Bell novels of Cussler for one reason or another, I encourage you to re-think your reasoning. These are really FUN novels that provided me with hours of absolute entertainment. Some can argue that as Clive slowly enters retirement and has turned over the vast majority of his writing to Paul Kemprecos, Jack DuBrul, Dirk Cussler and here with Justin Scott (among others) that the 'Magic' has died and is nothing more than a shell of his former glory...well, I won't try to change your opinion, all I can say is this: I am VERY glad I got to know Isaac Bell and look forward to reading his next adventure, too. Hopefully you'll give these books a shot, I honestly think you'll like 'em.

Cussler rings a different Bell.
By Marcus A. Lewis
I had been anticipating the release of this new Isaac Bell adventure even before I finished "The Wrecker" last year. Bell is a different kind of hero for Cussler fans to enjoy. A bit of Dirk Pitt, Kurt Austin, and Juan Cabrillo rolled into one. Cussler and Smith have dispensed with the frame story format choosing instead to tell this story in real time. Don't expect locomotives either (Well, not entirely. A good portion of the story does take place in railway cars) because the plot of "The Spy" is about bigger guns.

The year is 1908 and the Van Dorn Detective Agency (think Pinkertons) has been hired to investigate what appears to be a suicide, but in fact turns out to be a murder. One of several deaths associated with the project to build Hull 44. The plot is quickly set in motion when agent Isaac Bell is assigned to the case. Bell is a lot like Sherlock Holmes, except in one crucial area: He has no Watson.

The novel is meant to be a period piece: some of the language is archaic; the graphics and chapter headings all have an antique-like look to them. You can tell considerable thought went into creating the feel of this book. I hope you will enjoy "The Spy" as much as I did.

If you have an eye for proofreading, you will also enjoy the many editing errors. What is the proper spelling of dreadnought? And what about Suisun City? Have fun!

not bad
By Anonymoose
I'll keep this review short. If you're reading this, then you're likely familiar with Cussler novels and, hopefully, have already read "The Wrecker". I wont spoil anything, either.

I absolutely LOVED The Wrecker. This novel picks right up where Wrecker left off. Unfortunately, the characters are somewhat less interesting at first, but that changes later on. I also found the use of the mystery-identity criminal mastermind a bit TOO familiar... seeing as how THEY JUST DID THAT IN THE LAST BOOK (right down to the internal narrative of the bad guy thinking while he's in the room with Bell, but it could be one of 5 characters). Nevertheless, it kept things interesting.

All in all, as the story started to unfold my reading enthusiasm increased, and the climax seemed to happen all-too-early, but there was too much plot to be wrapped up. I felt like I was reading the finale-events forever. By the time it ended, I thought, "finally!".

Look, if you take my review as true, please understand that it definitely worth the read - do not skip it. I'm hoping they get back on track for the next in the series.

Review
Praise for Kate Noble

“Kate Noble’s writing is smart and sparkling.”—Amanda Quick, New York Times bestselling author

“If Austen were alive and writing novels today, the result might be something exactly like [this], a wickedly witty and superbly satisfying romance.”—Chicago Tribune

“Believable and captivating…An outstanding and memorable tale.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

About the Author
Kate Noble loves books, romances especially. But coming from a family of doctors, scientists, and mathematicians, she didn’t discover she was adept at writing until, oh, about junior year of high school. This discovery came as something of a relief, as she was hopeless at memorizing Latin names for all the bones in the human body. The Heisenberg uncertainty principle eludes her to this day. Kate lives in Los Angeles.

Made music come alive on the page.
By Letitia
Rating: B ... Heat: Sweet

Bridget Forrester had a bad first season. Not only was she hidden in her sister's shadow, and often remarked to pale in comparison to her sister's golden beauty, her incurable shyness made her come across stiff and unfriendly. Which caused the men of ton to decide she wasn't worth the bother. Thankfully, she has her pianoforte. While she may not get asked to dance at balls, she can go home at the end of the night and lose herself in music. Music is her balm. Her solace.

Until it's not. Overcome with nerves, fearing ridicule and wayward glances, Bridget loses her cool at a dinner party and fumbles her way through a song she knows forwards and backwards. The mishap crushes what's left of her self-confidence and takes away the pride she had in her playing.

Wanting to leave London, she convinces her mother to go to Venice so she can seek out a man who once promised her piano lessons. Bridget, her mother, and her younger sister travel the continent to meet the Italian maestro Vincenzo Carpenini. Once they arrive, however, Bridget gets a lot more than she bargained for.

Oliver Merrick has never felt like he fits in. With an English father and an Italian mother, he feels like neither and both at the same time. Oliver also feels like he has no merits of his own. Like he lives off either his father's name or his famous half brother's. But while he may not have a talent of his own, he can recognize it in others. And Bridget has it in spades.

Bridget and Oliver have a very slow romance. There isn't even a hint of attraction or lust or love until nearly 46% in. And, even then, more romance took place between Bridget and her pianoforte than between her and Oliver. It was beautiful and poetic but, at times, the music overtook the story. By 56% in, this does shift some. Going from nonexistent to subtle with a dash of sweet.

The second half swept me away. I loved Bridget's passion combined with Oliver's desire to help her succeed. He truly wants to help her overcome her fears... and he goes about it in the cutest of ways. And he does it with no expectations, which says a great deal about him. Oliver is a true gentleman, through and through.

Let It Be Me made music come alive on the page. The characters were lively and passionate. You could feel how much music meant to them. Music itself became a character. Miz Noble also did a wonderful job with the setting. The scenery, the waterways and the gondolas, the accents, were vivid and made it feel like I was truly there. My only complaint? I wish there had been more love, the kind between a man and a woman, woven into the first half.

So beautiful and inspiring! Transcends the romance genre!
By Kelly Chancey
I am a huge Kate Noble fan, and so I bought this the day it came out. She is the best at fun, witty romance, and I always look forward to her book releases. But this one- wow! I couldn't put it down, and now I can't do anything else until I try to express just how magical this book is. I am only afraid that I will fail, because I don't think I'm a strong enough reviewer to express the depth and resonance of this book.

When you see "Let it be Me" you think of a girl hoping to be chosen, probably by a boy- and maybe you are looking for a light romance. But no, this is so, so much more. Perhaps it should be "Let Me be Me" as, to me, this is mostly the story of a girl embarking on a grand adventure to find something missing in her life and ending up finding herself. It is richly layered and developed and the characters are utterly relatable and yet somehow also enviable and inspiring. Oh, and passionate- definitely passionate!

Watching Bridget find a font of strength within herself is truly inspiring. I would never want to give away the plot in a review, so I will leave it at that. She just may inspire you to find passion and devotion and art in your own life, and perhaps some day produce something truly magnificent.

Pleasant and mild but no sparks
By Lee
Bought this after reading that other titles by this author were well reviewed. This is a thoughtful, slowly paced tale that explores the interior worlds of both characters -- their insecurities and how they overcome them, through the metaphor of music. Lovers of gentle, classic Regency with mild romance and minimal intimacy (in the sense that the first kiss doesn't arrive until halfway through the story), and classical music fans will find this appealing, however the heavily internal exploration, the telling vs showing, and the musical theme that threatened to overwhelm the romantic aspect of the tale left me overall unmoved and at times bored by the story. Don't get me wrong--it's a pleasant and well-crafted work, just not very exciting.

Actually angry with Ms. Harrison
By L. Nicholson
I loved Dragon Bound. It was an amazing and fresh book, with a good storyline, inventive action sequences, and lively dialogue. I'm a big believer in good dialogue, with characters having a sharp wit, and generally-speaking a touch of sarcasm and humor. The dialogue and action were two of the best things about Dragon Bound. I read in twice, then couldn't wait for Storm's Heart, even though it was out only a few months later. However, I was a little disappointed in Storm's Heart. Sure, I realize not every book in a series is going to be a favorite. But, I missed some of the humorous, witty banter. Tiago and Tricks just didn't seem to have the same chemistry as Dragos and Pia. All in all, I gave it a 4 rating, and I still had high hopes for Rune's story.

Rune was a great character from the beginning of the series. He was funny. He had good dialogue sequences with Dragos, Pia and the others. I had such high hopes for this book that I pre-ordered Serpent's Kiss, and read the entire thing in one sitting (which I normally do for books I'm dying to read). And... I have never been so let down with a book and an author. Rune was turned into some kind of almost cartoonish character, and Carling, whom I actually liked in Storm's Heart, became a weak-minded (and weak-willed) female (and I'm not referring to the "episodes").

But the thing that really got me, that made me furious with Ms. Harrison, is the way Rune treated Dragos. Dragos told Rune in Dragon Bound that he was his best friend, yet at the drop of a hat, Rune not only deserts him but wonders if he'll ever forgive him. And for what, you ask? NOTHING! Dragos did nothing!! He acted as anyone would do in that situation, without knowing Rune and Carling were mated.... because Rune didn't tell him. Then, even though it's affecting the other gryphons, Rune actually neglects to tell Dragos or his other supposedly long time friends about what's going on. I understand needing to protect your mate, but seriously... "bros over hoes" anyone? These are his BROTHERS/SISTERS for all intents and purposes, and he just leaves them out in the dark about a major events (trying not to be spoilerish). At least Tiago was upfront with everyone when he had to leave, so everyone knew it was because he was mating Tricks. Furthermore, Carling didn't even try to intervene, to try and help Rune repair his relationship with the other Sentinels and Dragos. She was truly selfish, basically just accepting Rune giving up everything to be with her as her due.

Pretty soon, Dragos is going to be left by himself with not one of his friends/sentinels to help defend him and his new mate and child. It's sad. Now, I doubt I'll read the new book. It's not even about any characters I have interest in, anyway. I may read Book #5, which is another Pia and Dragos story, but part of me is afraid she's going to ruin two of my favorite characters. I don't know if Ms. Harrison reads these comments, but please, just go back to the winning formula of Dragon Bound -- good snappy dialogue, strong females and action. If I wanted a introspective, sad sack of a female, I'd watch a Lifetime movie.

Very dissappointed
By Gypsy Reader
I was REALLY looking forward to this book. I really enjoy the world Thea has built in many ways. I read the last two books with enjoyment but they both had gentle heroines that needed rescuing by the big bad wyr. But in Carling, a woman who had raised herself up from slave to queen to the Councillor of the Nightkind through her own merit, determination and strength of character I was excited to finally have a story about a heroine who didn't NEED the big bad wyr to rescue her. I thought it would be a book about the two of them falling in love and her rescuing herself through that process. Or something like that....

I didn't get that. Of all of the things that I thought would happen in this book ... I didn't expect the author to figure out a way to wipe out all that Carling had accomplished herself and attribute it all instead to Rune. But the author did manage to do it. And I am so disappointed that instead of taking the opportunity to stretch herself and write a different story about two people who are equals joining to become an even stronger whole, Thea chose to write the same old story about the boy rescuing the girl.

I don't know if I will read another of book by this author. There is a preview of the next book in the series, Oracle Moon and it is more of the same. Female in trouble needs big strong man to make it all okay. Meh... I've read that. Again and again and again. And frankly I've read it better. I'm not interested in reading a series that just regurgitates the same book one after another.

Beautiful story, what's with the bad reviews?!?
By Magesk
I've read a TON of books and always check reviews before buying a new one, I'm very picky about the writing style and intensity I expect from my romance books. I was almost scared off of the series when I read some of the negative reviews about this book. I started reading the series and have loved her books. Dragon Bound was great and so was Storm's Heart. I'm not going to talk about the plot because everyone does, but I thought this book was very possibly the BEST one in the series thus far. Rune we've been waiting since the first book to hear about, and he has a wonderful, charming personality. Carling is a very powerful, strong, gorgeous female and I think it's ridiculous that people are saying Rune saves her, he helps in her journey but she always is powerful and strong. The two of them make one of the sexiest power couple I've ever seen in all the romantic novels I've read. I love Dragos too, and I was really worried when people said that Rune and Dragos had issues, but you know what? Dragos wouldn't even hear him out, he was being rude and totally selfish (which was frankly odd, b/c in his book he doesn't come off like that, but then again he is used to bossing people around.) Keep in mind he has Pia, he is happy and he is one of the strongest beings on the earth, I think he'll survive without 2 sentinels (Rune and T-Bird). I also am fairly certain that in later novels they will be friends again and work together. The author loves both characters and won't keep them in a negative relationship. The love story itself in this book grows and is simply beautiful. It isn't just a hot steamy chemistry thing but also so much deeper than that, he also gets to experience very important parts of her life. On top of that, they do have chemisty that gets your heart pumping and I almost cried at how sweet and romantic certain parts of the book are. Point being, this book is excellent. Please read it, you will be surprised what an incredible love story it is. I honestly think the book would be good enough to turn into a stand alone movie. Booya!

This one made me laugh out loud a lot. Depite the excellent action and story...this was so funny!
By Mark S. II
It is rare that an author can bring more than a chuckle out of me. However, Kuzneski manages to make me "belly laugh" rather often throughout his books. Jones and Payne have a great relationship, and provide comic relief at all the best times. Kuzneski should be a billionaire with the level his story telling acheives. He is a true Master of the Thriller Novel! This one will not dissapoint. As long as you have a brain and a sense of humor, you will love it!

good follow up in the series
By shaggy
I have been waiting for this new entry in the Payne and Jones series for a year now and it was well worth the wait. There are afew authors whose books i buy every year: these used to be Sydney Sheldon, Mary Higgins Clark, Steve Berry, David Baldacci, James Grippando, Sam Bourne (after having read every Earle Stanley Gardner (perry mason) book and every Agatha Christie book. Every now and then i try a new writer but usually it turns out to be a downer. But not Kuzneski. Finally i can add a writer to my list. His book all feature the heroes Payne and Jones, 2 ex army buddies, and their friend who is the head of Interpol. The first book, The Plantation, was not that good (thank god i didn'r read that one first, but from the second book onwards the series keeps getting better. This new entry in the series is also good and features the usual heroes and wisecracks and good plot. If you like Dan Brown, Steve Berry, sam Bourne and or Indiana Jones, you will love Chris Kuzneski

Wait, I've Read This Before!
By buffmiller
When I got a notice that a new Chris Kuzneski was coming out I ordered it to my kindle. It was this hardback book, The Secret Crown. As soon as i started reading I thought it was familiar and it was. I had read the paperback edition that came out in 2010. Why was the book released as a new book, (just because it is now in hardback)? I read so many books that I don't always remember the titles I've read. If a hardback comes out with a current publication date I think most people assume it is a new book. Why the paperback two years early and now the hardback? It was a really good story and I would give it 4 stars, I am just disappointed when it was released in hardback it wasn't noted as first time in hardback, previously in paperback.

engaging whodunit
By A Customer
Two teens find the body of an apparently homeless elderly woman near a movie theater in Excelsior, Minnesota. The female is identified as fifty-three years old Carolyn Marie Carlson who had a long rap sheet. The assumption is she froze to death while intoxicated; but a week later the autopsy proved she had no alcohol in her blood. Thus Sergeant Malloy revises his assumption as he now believes Carolyn was murdered and suspects the family.

Carolyn's cousin Margaret Smith, a frequent patron of Crewel World knitting shop, begs owner Betsy Devonshire to investigate the death of Carrie. Meanwhile North Dakota investigator Irvin Morcambe visits Emily Hame in Excelsior to ask if she knows where homeless Janet Turnquist is as she has inherited a fortune; Emily says no though she worries about her troubled Aunt Janet. A teen finds Janet's corpse and on her blouse is embroidered her last will and testament in which her kind loving niece Emily inherits her estate if it proves legal. Wanting to know who killed her Aunt Janet, Emily asks Betsy to investigate. Betsy knows there is a link between the two homicides besides both are homeless females, but struggles to knit cohesively the clues.

The latest Crew World needlecraft mystery (see Buttons and Bones) is an engaging whodunit as Malloy and Devonshire find the evidence does not come together in either murder case or together with one murderer. The entertaining story line is fun to follow as Betsy works two seemingly related homicides, but how they tie together never seems to surface as series fans will appreciate what the "tie" is once Monica Ferris reveals it to the audience.

Back to What Ms. Ferris Does Best
By B Squared
I must admit that I wasn't too thrilled with the last few books in the Crewel World series. Generally, I was happiest in the early part of the series, when Betsy was in her shop, working with Godwin, dealing with her cat, and interacting with her fellow crafters. And this novel returns to what I like best.

The story revolves around the murder of two seemingly unrelated women, both homeless, both found frozen in the snow of a Minnesota winter. Betsy is again approached by one of her customers, who is under suspicion by the local police, who asks her to find out what really happened. Betsy manages to outwit the police, find out the real story, and bring the assailant to justice.

What I like best about these books (other than the fact that needlework is always in the background) is that Betsy is an average, middle-aged woman with average middle-aged problems (arthritis, man-trouble, etc.) The characters are well drawn, there isn't too much violence, and you enjoy the craft shop and its regulars (and can pick up some needlework tips along the way).

There are a number of reasons why I don't give this a higher, 5-star rating. No police officer would allow a civilian to put herself in jeopardy as happens in this story. Too many people volunteer information to Betsy (if she asked me some of these questions, I'd tell her to mind her own business) and I often feel I'm being preached to - in this case, the plight of the homeless. However, even with these drawbacks, the book is a pleasant read - a fun way to while away the time on a winter's evening. But, frankly, I doubt I'd remember much about the story a month from now.

Threadbare
By Cathy Akers Jordan
This is one of my favorite series and I really enjoyed this book. I won't give anything away but there are some new characters, very sneaky clues, and an excellent plot. One of the things I enjoyed most was Betsy's train trip to Fargo. Leaving Excelsior, briefly, does not detract from the cozy setting and its wonderful to see modern characters traveling in such a time-honored manner.

From Publishers Weekly
Ordinary people coming to grips with real problems are handled with a sure, restrained touch that makes this latest novel from the bestselling author of Bygones a moving tale. When Greg Reston, a young policeman in the small Minnesota town of Anoka, is killed in an automobile accident, it is up to his best friend and fellow officer Chris Lallek to break the news to Greg's widowed mother Lee. In the months following the tragedy, Chris proves invaluable to the Reston family, as a surrogate brother to Greg's siblings Janice, 23, and Joey, 14, and a source of unwavering emotional strength for all of them. But underlying his devotion is a clandestine and highly charged affair with the 45-year-old Lee, 15 years his senior. Is their need for each other really love, or is it simply comfort for two grieving people? When Chris proposes marriage, Lee must consider not only her judgmental mother and prudish sister, but also Janice, who has developed a crush on Chris. Spencer depicts the Reston clan with empathy, presenting fully dimensional characters with carefully limned vulnerabilities and hostilities. While residing safely within the parameters of romance fiction, this novel has an appealing candor that transcends the genre. Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club main selections.

From Booklist
Lee Reston answers her front door and learns that her son, Greg, has been killed in an accident. Chris Lallek, Greg's roommate and fellow police officer, brings the news and grieves with the Reston family. Lee, a widow who has already lost one son, tries to be strong for her remaining children and for Chris. Chris refuses to let her shoulder her grief alone, and through shared memories, the two are drawn closer together, first as friends and then as lovers. Lee and Chris face opposition from her family: her mother and sister feel Chris is too young for Lee, and her daughter wants Chris for herself. Only with strong support from Lee's son and from her former father-in-law do Lee and Chris find the courage to elope and make plans for a life together. Spencer delivers a moving novel, which revives memories of the loss of loved ones and allows a resolution of feelings and a sense of peace. Melanie Duncan

A wonderful book!
By SANDY HALLIBURTON
Family Blessings is a book I have read 4 times. Even though it is not my "favorite" Lavyrle Spencer book, I seem to never grow tired of it. Each time I read it, I am more in love with Christopher. He has such patience with and love for Lee. He allows her the time she needs to realize how much that love means. I would love to have my own real life Christopher. He really is too good to be true. These two people, with grief, age differences, and family opposition, prove that love conquers all.

Heart warming
By Kris
I loved this story. Chris and Lee just seem to be a match made in heaven. With all the trials and tribulations that arise it keeps the reader reading. The thrill of the age differences and the fact that he was Gregs best friend makes the story its own uniquie story. I just loved the Joey Reston. I am not normally a romance reader, but this story makes me think twice. Maybe adding some more of Spencer's stories to my wish list.

Everything a Romance Should Be
By Teresa B.
The cover of my copy is in tatters I've read it so often - and then passed it around to everyone I know!

Noone is better than LaVyrle Spencer at creating genuine, warm characters that you feel like you know and whose fates you come to care deeply about. In FAMILY BLESSING she's outdone herself. Chris Lallek is the perfect hero: Warm, kind, funny, and the type of guy you can lean on - or cry with. Not a stereotypical romance-novel "knight on a white horse" - just an real man. And, I've never liked a heroine more than Lee Reston. She's what I've come to think of as the archetype LaVyrle-Spencer-woman: She's a grown-up - her body isn't perfect anymore, there are lines on her face, and she isn't coming into love this time innocent, or unscarred. She's strong and experienced, and she knows her own mind - but, she's not Superwoman. Like all of us, she has insecurities and fears and doubts, but she's determined to take life head-on and to grab every bit of joy she can. She's the type of person you'd want to be friends with - and you'll find yourself cheering for her.
It's a joy watching these two people find one another - and you do feel like you're "watching" it happen. LaVyrle has managed to capture beautifully that magic process through which friendship and respect is transformed into something deeper. When love finally blossoms for Lee and Chris you'll find yourself cheering - and maybe shedding a tear or two.

Amazon.com Review
John Sandford's acclaimed Prey novels featuring the brilliant Lucas Davenport have plunged millions of readers into the darkest recesses of the criminal mind. Now Lucas has met his match. His newest nemesis is more intelligent, more deadly, than any he has tracked before: a kidnapper, a violator, and a cruel, wanton killer who knows more about mind games than Lucas himself.

From Publishers Weekly
Minneapolis PD Deputy Chief Lucas Davenport, seen last in Night Prey, carries on as a smart, quirky hero in the seventh "Prey" book. When psychiatrist Andi Manette and her two young daughters are kidnapped, Lucas must discover whether it's a ransom snatch, the work of one of Andi's ex-patients or the ruse of someone in her life who might benefit from her death. (Her father, stepmother, estranged husband and medical partner are all good suspects.) Readers know the kidnapper is John Mail, a scary ex-patient who's entertained nasty dreams of Andi for years. He enacts his violent sex fantasies with the imprisoned Andi; it seems only a matter of time before he will go after the girls. Lucas, meanwhile, draws on all available resources, including his own computer game company, to flush out Mail, a gamer who enjoys taunting Lucas with phone calls. During this time, Andi has been trying to maintain an element of control and contrive an escape. Sandford expertly ratchets up the suspense from beginning to the brutal finish. Lucas does get his villain, but no one comes out of this experience unscarred. Literary Guild main; Doubleday Book Club alternate.

LUCUS COMES THROUGH AGAIN!!!!!
By Mac Blair
I have read several Prey books. My favorite until now was Winter Prey, but Mind Prey may be the best one yet. They are pretty close. In Mind Prey, John Mail kidnapes a women and her two daughters. She is a Dr. who has treated John before for mental depresion. Really a nut. He carrries them to a old farm house. There he begins to rape the mother. The youngest daughter is carried away. The mother is told he carried her to a Wal-Mart and let her go, but did he???? Lucus it called in to try and find Mail and the woman and girls. The action is great. The mind games Mail and Lucus play with each other is very good. I loved the ending. Goody, goody. Through out the book Lucus is also trying to find a way to ask Weather to marry him. Does he ever do it???? A very good read if you like scary stories.

A page turner to the power of 10!
By Jeanne M. McCollum
I am in the process of reading #8 of 10 (so far) of the "Prey" series. I re-read the first 3 and have continued through the entire series. Mind Prey is #7 and by far the best yet. This story kept me locked in from the first pages. It has the hidden secrets, the "thing" Lucas Davenport just can't get ahold of, empathy for the victims, and surprises until the very end. Instead of "burning out" on the saga, I eagerly start the next book. WOW! What a storyteller is John Sandford!

If you haven't read this series you have missed a treat!
By Graeme Boddy
Mind Prey was the very first "Prey" book I ever read. I picked it up in an airport and was instantly hooked. John Sandford has the rare ability to build "real" characters that are flawed but real - cruel but interesting - attractive but not cheesy.
For those of us with kids - this particular book is savage! It starts with a guy fishing on a lake... and right then your nerves will start to fray - you know that something BAD is going to happen.

Step in Lucas Davenport - Part detective, part game designer, part animal. This guy is about the best detective I have seen portrayed. He isn't Sherlock Holmes and He isn't Mike Hammer, but he is definitely a bit of both.

One last thing - if you read one - be prepared to buy the rest!

4 1/2 stars - a nice addition to the John Wells series
By Timothy J. Kindler
The Midnight House is Alex Berensen's fourth installment in the series featuring CIA agent John Wells. As the story opens, Wells is in self-imposed seclusion as he attempts to recover physically and emotionally from previous action. Quickly, however, he is called back to Washington DC to help investigate the murders of several members of a secret terrorist interrogation unit. Although initially reluctant to reengage, he is rapidly pulled into an investigation filled with undefined allegiances and potential conspiracies.

Start to finish, this work moves along with pace. As Wells moves forward with his investigation, Berensen frequently goes back in time to slowly shed increasing amounts of light on the Midnight House and its participants. The Midnight House is not without its action and plot twists, but it is different than the previous installments of the series. In Midnight House, Wells' action is more often cerebral than it is physical, with much of the intense action left to other characters. All-in-all, this story broadens the Wells character in a good way. While this work could stand on its own, my recommendation would be to read all four books in order for maximum enjoyment.

Excellent Book!
By Melvin Hunt
This is another good book from Alex Berenson. Once again the hero of this action-espinoige novel is John Wells.
The U.S. government has set up a house in Poland called the Midnight House. This house is used for interrogation
purposes. Jihadists from the war in Afghanistan are captured and brought to the Midnight House to be interrogated
(or tortured). This facility is staffed by CIA personnel.Army Rangers, and other personnel. The name of this group is 673. There are 10 members of this working group. When 7 members of the 10 are murdered the head of the
CIA brings John Wells in to investigate the killings and determine who is responsible. Wells travels around the
globe to trace down leads. He is assaulted and arrested. It turns out to be a rough investigation. Wells starts
narrowing in on the killer. The identity of the real killer will surprise you. He also discovers deception and conspiracy wound into this plot. This is a very good book that will give you insight into interrogation centers. Be sure to buy it.

Berenson's finest yet
By Rocky Mountain Reader
I have read all four of the John Wells novels and this is the best in the series. While some might prefer slam-bang action and fears of the imminent destruction of the world, what I really liked about Midnight House was the psychological intrigue. In a good spy novel you need twists and turns including it never being clear whether some characters are "good" or "bad" and this book has plenty of that. The pain of the interrogators seemed real and Wells investigation of the murders central to the plot kept me guessing.

“Julie James rocks! You’ll laugh out loud and wish you had an FBI agent of your own.”—Sandra Hill, New York Times bestselling author

The FBI wants her cooperation.

As the daughter of a billionaire and the owner of the city’s top wine store, Jordan Rhodes is invited to the most exclusive parties in Chicago. But there’s only one party the FBI wants to crash: the charity fund-raiser of a famous restaurateur, who also happens to launder money for the mob. In exchange for her brother’s release from prison, Jordan is going to be there—with a date supplied by the Bureau.

Agent McCall just wants her.

As the top undercover agent in Chicago, Nick McCall has one rule: never get personal. This “date” with Jordan Rhodes is merely an assignment—one they’re both determined to pull off even if they can’t be together for five minutes before the sarcasm and sparks begin to fly. But when Nick’s investigation is compromised, he and Jordan have no choice but to pretend they’re a couple, and what starts out as a simple assignment begins to feel a lot like something more…

A Whole Lot to Love With this Book (A Grade)
By Katie Babs
There's a whole lot to love about A Lot Like Love from Julie James. This is a superb read, plain and simple. My inner fan girl cannot get enough of Julie's books and this may possibly be my favorite one of hers thus far. The writing is crisp, the dialogue is witty and the sexual tension is perfect without overtaking the plot. If you're longing for a great contemporary read, look no further. Julie James breathes life into a genre that so many say is dying.

A Lot Like Love takes place in Chicago, Illinois. FBI agent, Nick McCall has just come off of an undercover job where he helped take down twenty-seven dirty cops. The former Brooklyn boy is taking time off so he can go back home for his mother's sixtieth birthday party. But a sudden wrench is thrown in his plans. His boss asks him to help out on a case regarding Roberto Martino, who runs the largest crime syndicate in Chicago. They believe they can finally take him down through Xander Eckhart, a well-known restaurant and nightclub owner, who also has a wine bar that caters to the rich. They believe Eckhart is laundering drug money for Martino. The plan is to place a bug in Eckhart's office during an exclusive charity wine event on Valentine's Day that costs five thousand dollars a person. An Agent Huxley will be going as a guest while Eckhart acts as a consultant of sorts. The problem is that Huxley needs to go as someone's guest, and that's where Jordan Rhodes comes in. Jordan is the daughter to a billionaire who made his fortune through computers (think Steve Jobs). They believe Jordan will help them because of her twin brother, who's in prison.

Jordan may have a rich father, but she's financially independent. She's a business woman in her own right as the owner of DeVine Cellers, where she sells wine. When Huxley and Nick come to her with a proposition where they will release her brother Kyle from prison if she helps, she accepts. She'll have to play that part of Huxley's date. Jordan adores Kyle and wants him out of prison. This happened just because he shut down Twitter for two days. Kyle, the so-called, "Twitter Terrorist" and Sawyer look alike from the TV show Lost now sits in jail because of his actions. Jordan will do whatever she can to help him get freed, although she isn't took keen on Agent McCall. He rubs her the wrong way, assuming she's some spoiled rich girl.

Things don't go according to plan because Huxley gets very ill the night of the charity event. Now Nick has to be her date and make it believable that she and Jordan are dating. Everything should still work out, but what Jordan never realized, and suddenly finds out, is that Eckhart wants her, not only for her wine expertise, but her body, as well as her fortune. Now she and Nick have to keep up their fake relationship until Eckhart is arrested. Not only does that place Jordan in a dangerous situation, but she finds herself attractive to the gruff Nick, who has no idea about wine and the total opposite of the men she's always been interested in. A heated kiss on her front steps starts the ball rolling where their acting becomes a reality.

A Lot Like Love is full of so much win. I can't find anything wrong with this book at all. It has everything I could want as a reader. This is a smart, mature, fun book with some suspense and marvelous sexual chemistry between Nick and Jordan. Talk about a great couple who steam up the pages! Julie has a great way of building up the tension between these two where the payoff is well worth it. At one point Nick's jealousy comes out in the open where he wants to claim Jordan. Making out against a wall surrounded by wine is my idea of fun, not counting a bathtub scene that had me nearly swooning.

The dialogue between the characters is top notch. There are more than a few laughs, especially as Nick lusts over Jordan. My favorite scene is where he picks up Jordan for the charity event and his eyes pop out over her dress. He finds out she's not wearing a bra, just Band-Aids over her nipples. His internal reaction is priceless:

"Don't think about her nipples. Don't think about her nipples. He was thinking about her nipples."

Julie has a great way of showing off her secondary characters as well. Kyle is a real hoot. He's a dorky, loveable computer geek, who looks much like Sawyer, played by the hot actor, Josh Holloway.

How can you not get behind that? I was also very interested in Xander, the suave, seductive villain. I couldn't get enough of him and envisioned him being played by the actor, Julian McMahon.

A Lot Like Love reads much like a screenplay, and one if it did get made into a film, I'd love to see. Perhaps Reece Witherspoon would be perfect as Jordan and Clive Owen as Nick?

This is a book I had such a blast reading. Not only did I crave wine while I read, but as soon as I finished reading, I was craving for more from Julie. A Lot Like Love is the first book of the year that I can say will be in my top ten favorite reads for 2011, and one I whole heartedly recommend you pick up.

Kinda boring
By Katiekate
I loved Julie James's first two books, and after reading her third I was unsure if I wanted to get this one. Its not that her writing is bad its just a little boring compared to the snappy lawyer, fighting the attraction till the end, super funny first two books. I don't know I guess there was just something missing for me that made me devour 'just the sexiest man alive'.

Loving this author!

If you like Julie James' other books, you'll probably love this one too. My absolute favorite book of hers is Practice Makes Perfect - busted out laughing many times and would recommend it as a read for anyone who liked this book. This book appears to be the 2nd in a series, first being Something About You (another great read), which is about Agent Pallas and U.S. States Attorney Cameron Lynde - the books can be read independently of each other. A Lot Like Love has Pallas and Lynde as minor characters.

A Lot Like Love is about FBI Agent Nick McCall, who, while preparing to head out of town for his Mother's 60th birthday, gets roped into a last minute consultation on a junior agent's assignment. Junior agent ends up getting sick and Nick ends up having to go undercover.

Jordan is a billionaire's daughter, though proclaimed as financially independent - this piece kind of stuck with me... I live in Chicago and its very tough to believe that a small business owner, though ahead in her 10-year business plan, can afford a 4,000 sq. ft home in Lincoln Park; that's like half a million dollars in real estate at the LOW end and she still has money for first class vacations (/business trips) and designer shoes? Anyways, I'm sure as a billionaire's daughter she has money, but maybe her everyday expenses are covered by her income or her store really does phenomenally well- whatever, it doesn't really matter, I liked Jordan as a person. She was completely down to earth and real.

Nick is on the case for taking down a money launderer, Xander, and so he poses as Jordan's BF to get into Xander's exclusive party and bugs Xanders office. Turns out Xanders got the hots for Jordan (and her Dad's money) and immediately wants Nick followed to find some dirt on him and figure out how serious the relationship is. This pushes Nick and Jordan to continue acting out their relationship.

This book has what's becoming James' trademark in my eyes, witty banter which is downright hilarious at times, a fast-paced story that keeps you turning pages, and lovable characters you could easily be friends with. James has a way of writing emotion you could feel, I hurt for Nick when he had to call and tell his Mom he was missing her party, the disappointment was tangible and I teared up when Nick calls home to say "Ma...there's this girl"

I even loved the secondary characters, Jordan's twin Kyle was great and I'm really hoping he gets a story soon!
