A delightful romp. If you don't chuckle aloud at least once while reading this, I'll be SO disappointed in you.

I'm in the middle of reading three other books, and I really *like* those books. But when India Black and the Widow of Windsor arrived, the sequel to the first India Black novel I reviewed a few weeks ago, I "just took a look at it" -- and fell right in. So much for my serious plans for this weekend.
Here's the setup: Queen Victoria attends a seance in which Dear Departed Prince Albert tells her she should spend Christmas at her Scottish castle, Balmoral, blissfully unaware that the Scottish nationalists are using it as an opportunity to assassinate her. Her staff are less sanguine, and want to keep an eye on the Obvious Suspects. The British spy French is sent to hobnob with the Queen's guests among the nobility. The castle's staff also need to be investigated -- which is where India Black comes in. Our heroine -- whom you will remember is the madam of a London brothel -- is set up to be a lady's maid to an old woman so she can gossip with the rest of the people belowstairs. And, ideally, to find the assassins so she can save the empire.
All that could be told as a serious historical novel, and probably a very good one. But what makes this so special -- and a no-hesitation-at-all 5 star rating -- is India Black's character. She is a hoot, with a wry wit (kept mainly to herself), a big dollop of cynicism, and a love of adventure. The bagpipes wake her up the first morning, which India's roommate describes as "the voice of the Highlands." India contemplates: "The voice of the Highlands sounded a great deal like a wagon wheel in need of grease, but one doesn't hope to have a rational discussion with a Scot about the Great Highland War Pipe. Sane people do not make musical instruments out of a sheep's bladder and a bundle of reeds. What prompts a bloke to pick up an internal organ from ovis aries and squeeze it in the first place?"
Looking for a great lighthearted escapist historical novel? You just found one. But DO start with the earlier book in the series. You could get away with not knowing about India's earlier adventure, but it'd help to have the context. That's another 5-star novel, so it's no hardship.

India Black is back in book two, and she's just as feisty and irreverent as ever. Queen Victoria is convinced that Albert's ghost wants her to join him in Scotland at Balmoral castle, but there's a slight hitch as it seems there's a plot afoot to off the Queen and free Scotland. Disraeli (Dizzy) calls in French and India to go under cover and stop the evil doers and they're soon on their way to Scotland to join the festivities - India gets the job as maid to a very dotty Marchioness and French hob nobs with the upper crusts (he sure does seem comfortable there...). Oh, and don't worry as our street urchin Vincent manages to come along for the ride as well.
And that's all you really need to know, if you liked the first book you should enjoy this one as well, but I did feel this was a bit of a let down for me. India and French are great fun, and there were some very interesting hints at secrets of their lives still to be revealed, and yes that sexual tension is beginning to heat up between them. The Dowager Marchioness of Tullibardine was fun, but still a wee bit too over the top with the snuff business (you'll know what I mean when you get there). I also wasn't terribly fond of the way Bertie was portrayed. Yes, we know he was a rank womanizer and man about town but did we need constant reminders with him grabbing, groping and pinching any and all women except the Dowager Marchioness? I got it the first time, and I'd always had the impression that he respected his wife Alex and didn't flaunt the women in his face and for that I'm knocking off half a star. Still an enjoyable, quick easy read with a mystery that keeps you guessing and reading until the end, and I am looking forward to more with this pair.

I think I had more fun reading this one than the first of the series, India Black. This time brothel madam-cum-spy India is sent to Queen Victoria's Scottish home Balmoral, under cover as a maid, to help British agent French and Prime Minister Disraeli. The queen is there to spend the Christmas holidays and the P.M. and French are suspicious that there will be an attempt on her life by the Scottish nationalists group Sons of Arbroath.
Again we have lots of LOL moments reading the first person narrative in India's cheeky, flippant, even irreverent tones. No one is safe from her funny but sometimes biting observations, not the queen, the womanizing Prince of Wales, Disraeli, or any of the fictional characters India comes into contact with.
At times India may be a bit too abrasive in her observations, a few of which tended towards stereotyping and almost bigotry (e.g., referring to the queen's Hindu guard as "little brown buggers" or too many references to Disraeli's ethnicity). But she was an equal-opportunity insulter and I just settled in to enjoy the book and not worry about political correctness. This was a person living in the 1870s, after all. (Although you must ignore the time period occasionally with regard to some of the vocabulary used by India in her comments.)
It was good fun watching India's attempts to be a subservient maid to one of the queen's guests, an aging, sharp-tongued marchioness addicted to snuff, and French's act as a rather dissolute upper-class guest at Balmoral. French and India's relationship is a tease for the reader. One hopes they are destined to be a romantic pair but at the rate this is developing it will take a few more books to get to the point that satisfies this reader's romantic bent.
And when is the next book? Well, there's the e-book India Black and the Rajah's Ruby in December 2012 and the paperback India Black and the Shadows of Anarchy (A Madam of Espionage Mystery) in February 2013. I'll be reading them.
