Carolina Home (A Dare Island Novel), by Virginia Kantra

Home to the Fletcher family for generations, Dare Island is a fishing village rocked by changing times--its traditions slipping away like sands of the North Carolina coast. Single dad and fishing boat captain Matt Fletcher deferred his own dreams to support his innkeeper parents and build a future for his sixteen-year-old son. Matt has learned to weather life's storms by steering a steady emotional course...and keeping a commitment-free approach to love.

Newcomer Allison Carter came to Dare Island to escape the emotional demands of her wealthy family. The young teacher aims to build a life here, to make a lasting place for herself. She doesn't want to be another Woman Who Once Dated Matt Fletcher. It's both tempting and dangerous to believe she can be something more.

Then Matt's brother Luke makes a sudden return home, with a child of his own--and a request that will change all their lives. With a child's welfare at stake, Matt must turn to Allison to teach him to let go of the past, open his eyes...and follow his heart.

Love is all around!
By NYromancereader
"Carolina Home" is one of the most touching love stories I've ever read. In addition to the (very satisfying!) main love story between hunky single-dad Matt Fletcher (*sigh*) and intrepid newbie schoolteacher Allison, there's Matt's parents' decades-long, still-strong romance; the masculine, just-us-guys affection between Matt and his teenage son; and the slow melting of Matt's newfound niece Taylor, a wary ten-year-old who can't quite believe the tight-knit Fletchers have enough love to spare for her (they do, and then some). Virginia Kantra sweetly captures the everyday challenges and joys that real life is made of--and if you don't cry during one short, spare yet incredibly poignant scene between Matt's parents, then you shouldn't be reading romance novels!

A heartwarming story about family and love
By Pamerd
Family is the central theme of this wonderful story. Matt Fletcher's family has lived on Dare Island for several generations raising families and living off the land. He is busy running his own fishing business and raising his teenage son, Joshua, with a little help from his parents who run an Inn on the island. Allison Carter is the new teacher on the island and just happens to have Matt's son in her class. She likes to meet all the parents of her students; especially those students that she feels need a little extra attention. It is not that Joshua is a bad kid; just that she feels he can do so much more than what she has seen so far.
Despite what others think, Allison believes she has finally found a place to put down roots. She escaped her overbearing parents who have more money than sense and has lived in several different places until she found this place. Since she has been here she has loved the fact that she feels like she belongs here.
Causing more family drama, Matt's brother, Luke, comes home from Afghanistan with his daughter in tow, a daughter (Taylor) who is now 10 that no one knew about until her mother recently died. Luke gets her settled with his family and leaves again for Afghanistan leaving a frightened young girl who is unsure of the Fletcher family and who is quieter than she should be as she is holding on to some difficult secrets.
A wonderful family drama surrounds the romance between Matt and Allison as Matt meets Allison's family and Allison gets to know Matt's family. Matt's hesitancy becomes apparent as they struggle to form a relationship as he does not believe Allison is here to stay. Matt has always felt responsible, not only of his parents and his son Joshua but now he has the addition of a niece his brother left behind. The family all comes together when Matt's mom Tess is in an accident, strengthening the bond they have and making room for Allison and Taylor in their tight knit family.

tender family drama
By A Customer
In Dare Island, North Carolina, since his teenage son Joshua returned to school, Matt Fletcher sails the Sea Lady II with his dad as mate as they take affluent people out fishing. Upper crust Philadelphian transplant Allison Carter informs Matt, as Joshua's teacher, his son is an underachiever. Matt says he has no time now, but will talk to Josh later. He thinks Allison is like Josh's mom a professor with little involvement in her son's life.

Matt's brother Luke is on compassionate military leave. With him is his ten years old daughter Taylor whose mother just died. Luke was unaware he had a child until now. He asks Matt to take care of her until he returns from Afghanistan.

Allison has a flat tire when Matt arrives. He takes her bicycle to the rental shop for repair. They next stop for a beer where they discus Joshua who has no college plans. Matt says he wants Josh to attend college, something he dropped out of to raise his son. They talk about family and she mentions she has not seen her big brother in years. They kiss as each feels the attraction, but he is one night stands with off islanders and she is no one nighter; besides family matters take precedent over love.

The vivid isolated barrier island location sets the tone of a tender family drama in which the lead couple's families are extreme polar opposites in how they support their respective loved ones. Although the lead couple makes love while his traumatized niece and his son (her student) are nearby and the niece's fears never explored (probably will when Luke's return), readers will enjoy this warm romance.
