First, since some confusion exists regarding the progression of the Nine Kingdom's books, here's a current list (as of Jan '10):

To Weave a Web of Magic (The Tale of Two Swords where Mehar and Gilraehen fall in love)

I'm not usually a connoisseur of fantasy novels, as I often find them to be either too dark or too hard to relate to the characters. But since I love Lynn Kurland's historical novels and characters, I had to try this one out.

And it is fabulous.

Yes, it is fantasy, with the darkness of evil... yet you are not dragged down with lurid descriptions of the evil. Rather, you experience the emotions and thoughts and feelings of the characters as THEY deal with the evil that is thrown at them. And you share in their victories, just as you share in the conversation and laughter they share when they are warm and safe around the fire.

And of course there is magic... but it is a silvery ribbon that winds through characters that are still so human that it is easy to relate to them. They have magic and know spells... but they use them in the same utterly human ways that you or I use our knowledge and skills.

And then there's the romance. It is there, running beneath the surface and threatening to spill over any moment... yet it never does. That has been saved for future books. But its sweetness draws you into the story until you, also, have fallen in love with the shieldmaiden and the mage.

So read of Morgan, an orphan who has learned to shun magic in favor of the more visible and tangible skills of swordplay... while she slowly begins to find that magic is in her, she cannot run from it, and it does have its uses.

Read of Miach, the archmage of the powerful kingdom of Neroche, as he quietly defends the kingdom against far more danger than anyone realizes... as he is tempted the mis-use the power that few know he holds... and as he discovers a love that is more powerful still.

And escape to a world where men and women alike answer to the calling that has been laid upon them... to save the innocent masses that are unaware of the danger that threatens them.

Then, when the cliff-hanger gets you, go get the next two books in the trilogy so you can follow them to Miach and Morgan's Happily-Ever-After!

Five stars for entire trilogy--but books for specialized audience

This is my favorite romantic fantasy series. It has two great leads--a strong, sword-fighting heroine and a brilliant wizard, and a pleasant fantasy world that I enjoyed visiting. It is also LIGHT fantasy, i.e., not a fantasy where you're actually worried at any point that things won't work out. There is loss and tragedy, but not George R.R. Martin level. The story is compelling, the courtship between the characters is delightful, sex does not overcome the plot as in so many paranormal/fantasy romances, and it was great to have a fantasy series that does not leave me in despair. I just can't read those all the time. However, there are any number of reasons that people might not be pleased with these books, so I thought I'd list these reasons. That way, if you fit in one of these categories, you can skip these.

1.) These are light ROMANTIC fantasy, not dark romantic fantasy (Carey, Bishop) or a more brutal, traditional fantasy (Martin, Sanderson, etc. . .), so if you like the latter and get annoyed at books that lack the intricate world building, Machiavellian plots, and risk-taking of the latter, you will not like these.

2.) These books function as ONE book. One reviewer gave it one star for that reason. I managed to read the first two close together, but it was, indeed, rough waiting for the third. But now they're all out so you don't have to wait. But if you look at only the first book on its own, it would indeed be annoying because of how it ends.

3.) If you are a Kurland fan who only likes the time travel, ghosts, or historicals and does not like fantasy, skip these. I really hate time travel romances, so this was not a problem for me, but as one reviewer indicated, some people should be warned before they pick it up. So I'm warning you.

4.) Finally, if you prefer more sexually explicit romances you are absolutely out of luck here. In terms of sex, these have a G-rating.

Some readers may like reading all kinds of things but many of us have particular preferences in genre reading. So here's a guide. Don't say I didn't warn you. But if you like the kind of romance with characters who have the kind of longer courtship we NEVER have in romance fiction anymore and aren't turned off by the fantasy setting, check this out.

Wonderful romantic fantasy

This book is a great extension of Lynn Kurland's writing skills! She's moved from plain historicals into time-travel, matchmaking ghosts, etc. into a Tolkien-like world of the Nine Kingdoms. This is clearly the first book in a series that continue the stories of at least the lead couple, and hopefully others (there's a king with six brothers, which could lead to many sequels!).

I loved Lord of the Rings, but wished it had more romance and a more down-to-earth style. This book fits the bill and is a very enjoyable read. Look forward to what comes next!

About the Author
Susan Wittig Albert grew up on a farm in Illinois and earned her Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkeley. A former professor of English and a university administrator and vice president, she is the author of the China Bayles Mysteries, the Darling Dahlias Mysteries, and the Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter. Some of her recent titles include Widow’s Tears, Cat’s Claw, The Darling Dahlias and the Confederate Rose, and The Tale of Castle Cottage. She and her husband, Bill, coauthor a series of Victorian-Edwardian mysteries under the name Robin Paige, which includes such titles as Death at Glamis Castle and Death at Whitechapel.

Enjoyed it very much. In fact, I've read nearly all of Mrs Albert's books and have enjoyed all of them. She captures small town life in the Hill Country of Texas very realistically. Please just keep those mysteries coming!

Another Good Story

I'm a fan of the China Bayles mysteries and always enjoy visiting China's herb shop, Thyme & Seasons, in the fictional town of Pecan Springs with its cast of eclectic residents. In this book, I like how Albert develops China as a parent as her stepson Brian gets older and she adjusts to the new challenges of raising her 11-year-old niece, Caitlin, as well as the development of other characters such as that of China's friend Donna as she deals with the return of her irresponsible sister who causes trouble when she returns to the family farm. Another story line introduced is that of the engagement of police chief Sheila Dawson to Sheriff Blackie Blackwell, and their realization that one of them will need to step down from his or her position in order for a marriage to work which will make for an interesting topic in future books.

Overall I did like this book and appreciated that it did hold my interest from beginning to end and left me anticipating the next one in the series.

Another enjoyable visit to Pecan Springs

"Mourning Gloria" is the latest of Susan Wittig Albert's bestselling mysteries featuring China Bayles. A former defense attorney, China decided years ago to trade in her briefcase for gardening gloves and now owns an herb shop in Pecan Springs, Texas. Along with her best friend Ruby Wilcox, she also owns a tearoom and a catering service, and also has a booth at the new Pecan Springs Farmers' Market. China is happily married to private investigator Mike McQuaid, and is a mother to her 11-year-old niece Caitlin and Mike's teenage son Brian.

Although China is out of the courtroom, she still can't seem to get away from crime. One evening on her way home, China notices a trailer on fire near the roadside. She hears someone calling for help from within the trailer, but is unable to get to the woman in time to save her. While China tries to put the awful memories of the victim's cries for help out of her mind, a new intern at the local paper keeps asking her questions about what she witnessed. The intern, Jessica Nelson, gets deeply involved in her own investigation of the fire for more than just professional reasons, then disappears. In spite of her initial resolve to stay out of it, China soon feels compelled to retrace Jessica's steps to determine if the young journalist`s disappearance is tied to the arson/murder and help to locate her.

As a longtime reader of this series, I enjoyed the chance to catch up with China and Ruby and the rest of their friends and family in Pecan Springs. China is an interesting main character. She's smart and creative and is a good wife, friend, and mother as well as a successful businesswoman. She and Ruby are opposites in many ways, but have a great friendship and business relationship. Ruby appears throughout the book, but her role in the investigation is smaller than usual. Ruby is such a memorable character; it's not quite the same when she isn't as involved in the main storyline. McQuaid and Brian have even smaller parts in this book, but it was nice to get to know her niece Caitlin who is now living with China and McQuaid. China and Ruby's likeable friends Police Chief Sheila Dawson and her on-again/off-again fiancé Sheriff Blackie Blackwell appear frequently in this installment, which helps fill the void of those characters with smaller roles.

The author tells the story using a friendly, conversational tone. As an example, when describing a local restaurant, China advises, "But I'm not a cilantro fan. Maybe you are. Next time you're eating at Beans', order the soup and see what you think." Often when the author is providing background information for new readers, she uses this chatty style of writing. "In case you're new to our little group, Grace is Ruby's eighteen-month-old granddaughter - a real cutie-pie." This is a great way to catch up new readers and stay within the style of the rest of the narration. It personally draws you in and makes you feel like part of the town and invested in the story,

Some of the chapters of the book are told from the point of view of one of the supporting characters. This technique helps move the plot along and also gives the reader information that is important to the plot, but can't be learned from China.

All of the chapters begin with information or quotes about herbs and other plants. China shares her love and knowledge of herbs with the reader. These introductions aren't just gimmicks; the information shared is directly related to the storyline. The tidbits about herbs that are included are the highlight of each of the China Bayle mysteries, and helps make them special. In "Mourning Gloria", the chapter introductions are all related to mood-altering plants which play a part in the book`s plot.

Throughout the book, China is right in the middle of the investigation into the murder and Jessica's disappearance, but her involvement is believable. Unlike many amateur sleuths, China wisely turns over leads she uncovers to the sheriff. She wants to help others, but doesn't take foolish chances. The result is a face-paced interesting mystery grounded in reality.

Current readers of this series, as well as fans of Laura Childs and Diane Mott Davidson, will enjoy having a nice visit with China, enjoying an intriguing mystery, and learning interesting facts about herbs all in one.

The plot threw me a bit...

Hemlock Falls, New York, is perfect for tourists with its quaint shops and world famous cooking school and the wonderful Inn at Hemlock Falls. Run by sisters, Meg Quilliam and Sarah Quilliam-McHale. Meg is a master chef with a bit of a temper, watch out for flying saute pans. Sarah (Quill) is the manager with an adorable son Jackson. Her husband Myles, the former sheriff, now works for the federal government and is gone a lot.

In this latest installment a episode of the hit television show Your Ancestor's Attic is being taped in Hemlock Falls. The host of a competing show Pawn-O-Rama arrives on the scene just in time to cause a little trouble. The hosts of the shows have quite a rivalry going and they decide to settle things between them with a cooking contest that will be taped for both programs.

Things get a little heated as the competition begins, then one of the men keels over dead. Suspicions are that he was poisoned and his rival is the obvious culprit. But he is not the only suspect, even some of the residents of Hemlock Falls are being questioned.

Thankfully the Quilliam sisters are masters at sizing up the suspects and with a little help they will catch the killer.

Dollycas's Thoughts

This is one of my favorite series. The entire set in on my keeper shelf. The quirky characters are delightful. They continue to grow and evolve through each story. Their antics always bring a smile to my face.

With that being said the plot of this one threw me a bit. I love the idea of an Antiques Roadshow type series coming to the town. The characters this theme brought were amazing. I got lost wondering why would these hosts engage in a cooking contest? This idea did bring the story back to the inn and cooking school, but it just felt off. The were appraisers of antiques, not from a cooking show. If rival cooking show hosts came to town this contest was perfect but it didn't work for me in this circumstance. There was a wedding supposed to be held at the inn with the reception at the cooking school and a murder there may have made more sense. I know after 17 stories it is hard to be new, fresh, current and unique, and please all the fans, this one just missed the mark with me.

The story as it plays out is entertaining and I still enjoyed it. It just left me scratching my head a bit.

delightful cozy

After a month away from Hemlock Falls Sarah "Quill" Quilliam-McHale and her three years old son Jack move back into the Inn at Hemlock Falls while her husband and Jack's father travel for his counterterrorism agency to a foreign nation. The town is excited with the news that Edmund Tree, the pompous acerbic host of Your Ancestor's Attic, is coming to film a show and marry his fiancée Rose Ellen Whitman, owner of Elegant Antiques.

T-shirted mellow Pawn-O-Rama producer Belter Barcini, whose show trails Ancestor in the ratings, also arrives in Hemlock falls. The bitter rivals agree to a cooking contest in which each will make their favorite dishes. During the cook-off, Tree drinks wine only to keel over dead. Quill knows the obnoxious Tree died from strychnine poisoning. She works around her promise to her spouse of "no more Snooping" in way that don't break her pledge. As always Quill's sister Meg and their staff at the inn assist her; but like the police her inquiry over several months fails to identify the killer.

The latest Hemlock Falls Mystery (see A Pinch of Poison and Murder Well-Done) is a delightful cozy filled with eccentric characters that bring plenty to the charming plot. Filled with red herrings and false leads, Quill is at her energizer bunny best as she uses her artistic eye to find clues in a case that seems to go nowhere. Fans will enjoy this fun whodunit as the polar opposite visiting TV personalities bring out small-town living.

Too Much Going On In This One!

I have been a fan of this author since I read her first Hemlock Inn book. Her books are a quick read and fun. That being said this one seemed like she was trying to pack too much into this one. It could have been made into two books.

As another reviewer said, they didn't understand why the hosts of an Antique Roadshow type shows would have a cooking contest. I don't either. There was just something off about this book. Is the author running out of steam with this series. She has another one that she hasn't put out a new book in quite a while. Maybe it is time she did. Quill seems to still be a bit scatter brained. The bit about looking at her sisters' socks to see what her mood is has finally jumped the shark. Enough! Quill whines about wanting to go and play with her son instead of doing her job. Well, that is what happens when you run your own business.

The other usual characters are about the same except Marge. I was surprised when I found out what she was doing. The character of Carole Ann Spinoza just comes in and disappears. What is the point of her character?

Don't get me wrong, this book was enjoyable it just needed to be tweaked a bit before being published.

Humor columnist and writer Barry delights us with his first full-fledged novel. The circumstantial theater of events culminating in much riotous zaniness reminds this reviewer of P.G. Wodehouse. Only Barry sets his characters in 20th-century south Florida ? la Carl Hiaasen and Elmore Leonard. If you remember that Barry always tries to find the humor in everyday situations, you almost instinctively know that when he gets to develop the plot, twists, and personalities in a story of his imagination, it will be a light-hearted, wacky ride. Consider the combination of a dim, homeless vagrant named Puggy who "lucks" into a job at a bar where two corrupt Russian owners are warehousing and selling high-tech weaponry; several teenagers actively pursuing one another in a secret squirt-gun game of "Killer"; two low-life thugs who have been "contracted" to bump off a sleazy embezzler, and you have the trappings of comedic farce. Dick Hill's rendition of the characters will have you laughing out loud during your commute. Highly recommended for those who like sophomoric silliness.

A great laugh

Dave Barry certainly knows what buttons to push to get a laugh...from the goats on the highway to Elizabeth Dole trying to steal Arthur's soul, his humor ranges from low to high brow and stays funny all the way through. True, the flavor of some of the humor is unique but that's always been Dave Barry's signature. I enjoyed it, plain and simple. But I will say don't start this book thinking you're going to read a piece of literature to ponder about...read it with a bag of popcorn and a soda (well, scratch the soda - it might end up going through your nose).

Readers--lighten up!

There seem to be a lot of conflicting views about this book--evidently because its detractors expect Literature with a capital L. Wrong! It's fluff, pure and simple--in places laugh-out-loud-funny fluff. We're talking about Dave Barry, folks, not William Faulkner! No, it's NOT in the Carl Hiaasen league, but then, Hiaasen is in a league by himself, one he virtually owns. Nevertheless, Barry has written a fast, engaging, easy-to-read page-turner, the chaotic events of which owe something to the Marx Brothers for their frantic pacing and to Mel Brooks for their outlandishness. Lighten up and just enjoy it!

A good trial run, but Dave's way out of his league

The unimaginatively titled "Big Trouble" is an acceptable "practice run" novel for Dave Barry. He shows potential to be a good humor/suspense novelist: the characters are quirky and believable (in a cartoonish fashion), the pacing was done well, and for the most part, it was a really funny book. Unlike some critics, I didn't find the humor to be interfering with the story -- it seemed to come out of the situations naturally, and, well, it worked.
On the other hand, the "plot" left much to be desired. Sure, we ain't expecting Shakespeare here, but the story reads like fragments of an Elmore Leonard novel assembled at random and with no real logical progression; it's like a plot constructed by a 16 year old Leonard fan who's just messing around. But like I said, it's a practice run; his next one will likely be better.
The only thing I really dislike about the book is the use of profanity and the sexual assault scene. Dave seems to have been infected with a case of Tarantino-itis, believing that no dialogue can be "realistic" unless it contains multiple f-words. Similarly, the scene with the creep ripping open the woman's blouse was gratuitous and inappropriate for this kind of novel. What purpose did it serve? If Barry felt like he had to add a titillating scene, why couldn't he have done it in a comedic manner, instead of a disturbing rape-fantasy? Barry's been a successful writer without this kind of stuff before, so why does he think he needs it now?
Overall: a funny, light read that has its problems but shows potential. Just as long as he doesn't quit writing humor columns! In that area, Dave reigns supreme.

Not a Sunny Day

As her ex-husband says, Sunny Randall, Robert Parker's fresh, new heroine is as cute as Meg Ryan and tougher than a Mafia Don. Unfortunately, she may be losing Robert Parker's interest already, well before she loses ours.
_Shrink Wrap_ does not do justice to her early promise.Sunny's case, where an appealing and likable author of Romance novels is being stalked in some pretty creepy circumstances, is an intriguing and original one. The plot moves along briskly, making it difficult to put the book down. But Sunny is becoming increasingly one-dimensional and thinly drawn.
There is no way not to like her. She is honest, earnest, smart and tough. She is trying to make her life into something honorable. She is sometimes as fast with a comeback as Spenser himself, and almost as funny. So Parker does her an injustice when he has eight people tell her she needs to ask for help, and makes her give each and every one the exact same answer, that she needs to do it herself. Understandable, laudable even, but we get it after the third time. Repeating it is a nuisance, like a one-note song.
There is much about Sunny we would like to know, and while Parker explores a little, the whole character development of the book is built around one insight Sunny has into herself at the end, as a breakthrough, which is --- wait for it -- that her relationship with her father and mother has strongly influenced her relationships with men. Um, okay, good insight. But we could all have used a little more of Parker investing himself here, Sunny most of all.
And then there is the dog. Spenser and Susan's Pearl is a delight, as is the way they feel and talk about her. But this little dog is taking up more emotional space in Parker's minimalistic story than any other supporting character. Which seems to me to be a mistake and again, a waste of potential. Spike, for example, is a magnetic character, not up to Hawk exactly -- who would be? -- but worth a lot more space on the wide-margined, large-typefaced pages.
The books are getting shorter, thinner, more off-hand, as if Parker is writing while he's watching a ballgame. He can grab hold of Sunny and make her someone who will hold our interest for years. If he decides to make the effort.
In _Shrink Wrap_ it rains or snows and is bleak every day, except on the last page, when the sun comes out. Hopefully that lift out of the grayness will carry over to the next Sunny Randall book. She's worth it.

Who ARE these people?

I love the Spenser series and enjoyed the first two Sunnys, so I feel as disappointed by this book as I would be an unfaithful lover. It contains every element that's ever annoyed me about Parker's writing, and made them even more grating! First of all, the characters. Sunny and Spike are in their 30s and listen to WWII era music and quote Fred Allen. I guess Parker is too lazy to even try to include an appropriate pop culture reference. Then there's the savvy author who is selling her book to Hollywood, who knows all about agents and movie stars and making deals. And she is SHOCKED that Spike is gay? Yes, I can see where a woman who lives in a major metropolian area and rubs elbows with show biz types would find gay men exotic and unusual. COME ON! And Sunny and Julie's conversations are always about "deep, important" male/female issues, the way Phil Donahue's TV show was. Could these two talk about the sweater sale at Filene's for a change? Or if they must ruminate about the battle of the sexes ad nauseum, could we bring the dialog out the 1970s at least? Readers of the Spenser series are used to Parker returning again and again to the issues of feminism, therapy and the way the straight world views gays. In this book, he takes the opportunity to bludgeon us with them, and the characters suffer mightily.
And then there's the plot. Add me to the list of readers who found it hard to believe that the shrink didn't realize that the Sunny Randall and Sonjia Burke were one in the same. Her disguise did seem about as elaborate as Clark Kent's.
Yet I enjoyed FAMILY HONOR and PERISH TWICE enough that, should Parker decide to resurrect Sunny again, I'll try to spend a little more time with her. I just wish he'd work a little harder on what were once his strengths: dialog and plot development. I prefer reading about people I can believe actually live and breathe, and none of this characters remotely came to life.

Good stuff--sympathetic character damaged but dealing

Romance author Melanie Joan Hall hires Private Investigator Sunny Randall to help guard her against the the author's stalking ex-husband. Sunny wants to do more than guard--but as she begins to investigate the ex-husband, psychiatrist John Melvin, she begins to discover hints that Melvin is doing more than stalking. A psychiatrist whose practice seems to consist solely of beautiful women has plenty of opportunities to do evil. Sunny's investigations soon lead her to trouble--and danger. Sunny's personal problems form a reverse image of Melanie Joan's. Like Melanie Joan, Sunny can't get over her ex-husband and, as she investigates Melvin, she starts to work on her own issues.
Author Robert B. Parker delivers an enjoyable mystery. Fans of Parker will be familiar with the issues of being unable to live with, or without, a particular relationship, but here Sunny's problems and their mirror image problems with Melanie Jone add rather than detract from the story. Parker does a good job showing the positive as well as dangers of psychiatry, avoiding a fall into cliche.
Sunny's dialogue doesn't pack the impact of Parker's more famous Spenser series but this character remains fresh and interesting. Her mix of toughness and vulnerability makes Sunny sympathetic even when she doesn't make the most logical decisions.

I flew one of the aircraft, an Hu-16 Albatross in the search for the Bluebelle. Even after Julian Harvey was picked up, we had high hope of recovering others, so the search continued for three days, expanding northward to compensate for the flow of the Gulf Stream. When Tere Jo was picked up by the Greek freighter we were 45 miles away. Naturally, we were all elated but guilt persists to this day, that we may have flown over Tere but missed her in the choppy seas. I have always wondered how that brave young girl continued her life, and now we finally know ! Thanks, Tere Jo

AMAZING STORY, DULL BOOK

I had never heard of this incident and after reading a description of the book, looked forward to reading it.
I was quite disappointed. The book is very poorly written, and the real life incident and the real life survivor never come to life on the page. The writing is so dull and disorganized and without drama that reading this book is a chore, and Logan, despite being a psychologist, is unskilled at portraying Fassbender's state of mind at any point in the story.

The book has a very amateurish feel- the whole product feels thrown together. It is hard to say how much writing , if any, was done by Fassbender, but she deserved a more able coauthor. There is a unique story to be told here, but sadly this book fails at making it interesting.

*Very* Simple (and effective!) Diet!

I don't have enough positive things to say about this book or the diet itsself. I was planning on waiting a few months before writing a review, but I'm just too excited! This diet focuses on calories in/calories out, which is extremely important to me. There is no "miracle" behind it. Just healthy meal choices and plenty of exersize. I'm never hungry as I'm able to eat something small every 2-3 hours. If you're watchful, the diet is also relatively inexpensive. I put my name on mailing lists to recieve coupons and since the meals are kept in the freezer, I can stock up when they're on sale. There is no measuring, no counting calories, or countless hours spent cooking a meal I probably won't even eat, or eat way too much of without realizing its double the correct portion. There is no guesswork.

The book was also very well written and full of success stories and research proving why this diet will work, even if others similar wouldn't. It also comes with shopping lists, charts, etc. The only complaint I have is I bought the book on my Kindle, so I had to type annd print all that information when it could've been photocopied from the book.

Overall, I've been following the diet about 85% but still have been averaging a 3lb/week weight loss. Love, love, love it!!

Wonderful, Effective Diet Book

I can't recommend this book more highly. Over the years, I have read many diet books, some good, others just downright bad. But this book is the exception. Not only is it an engaging read (I was particularly shocked by the chapter on the potential dangers of bariatric surgery), but it is, as others have mentioned, a very do-able, practical, and economical program to follow. What's more, Dr. Anderson is very upfront about his struggles with his own weight. So you don't get the feeling that you are being preached to, but rather guided by a benevolent, been-there sage, who truly understands your frustrations and pains as you grapple with your weight issues. Also, Dr. Anderson offers really workable suggestions if you're faced with one of those days (or weeks) where you just can't satiate your hunger--have another shake or even one or more extra meals, up your fruit and veggies (none of this drink a gallon of water while concentrating on affirmations). Eating more Simple Diet foods are turns out to be a better alternative than, say, binging, crying, journaling and will not derail your efforts.

And if you're wondering if the plan works, I can only speak from experience. I have been following the diet for less than a week and have dropped 4.5 pounds, even though my exercise has been spotty. As I increase my activity, which I feel very motivated to do, I expect that the remaining 30 lbs will drop off within a reasonable amount of time. But in a way, I'm not that bothered by the timeline. The diet is so varied, so satisfying, so in-synch with my busy life as a mom, volunteer and writer, that I feel I could stay on it indefinitely and be perfectly satisfied and happy.

Seriously recommended!

Wow. What can I say here? This diet is easy, simple, inexpensive and smart. It's very easy to follow, and seems to work very well. I can't believe I didn't think of this before - it's so simple!! I've done Medifast for 9 months, HCG for 3 rounds, and pretty much anything else you can think of I have tried...but this little plan is genius! If you are a person who does not like hours grocery shopping and having to plan ahead and plan out meals then this plan will also work for you. With the selection of frozen entrees out there these days, and most with no chemicals in them, this plan makes staying on the diet so darn simple! I've found a butternut squash ravoli by Lean Cuisine that I just love! Anyway, this guy knows what he is talking about, he's been researching for years and years and this plan also allows me to enjoy as many veggies and salads as I want as well as fruit!
I really have to recommend this diet over Medifast and definitely over HCG. there's no hunger involved here if you do it right, and it feels more like a lifestyle choice than a diet.

Stylistic concerns aside, this action-packed overview of Bender’s career centers on a spirited rendition of how Bender reconstructed the facial features of several victims of an ongoing murder spree in Juarez, Mexico, in the early 1990s. Although the primary focus of this book, the gruesome murders of low-income young women in Mexico, is never satisfactorily resolved, the author does a thorough job of introducing a fascinating character to the criminal investigation lexicon. Frank Bender, an unusual, driven man finds his passion in recreating the facial distinctions of victims by building plaster busts from the skulls of the deceased. Making his living in advertising photography, Frank takes sculpting classes to enhance his work; an artist since childhood, Bender uses his eyes and imagination to fashion the personal characteristics, the small tics and lines of individual faces. Then unexpected opportunity: Bender is brought into the cold rooms of a local Philadelphia coroner's department where he is challenged to recreate the facial features of a murdered woman for forensic identification, case number 5233. The die is cast- Frank Bender has found his purpose, committed his life to this amazing work.

Juggling photographic assignments with the cost-ineffective busts he creates for police departments, the FBI, US Marshals and America's Most Wanted, like any artist, especially one with a righteous cause, Frank's priorities are unbalanced by the amount of time he devotes to the higher cause. While this passion puts a strain on his home life and his financial security, there is a strong element of altruism in Bender's chosen field. When victims are recognized, criminals caught through Frank's unique application of art and forensics, families are given closure and murderers are brought to justice. Certainly, Bender is an exceptional individual, self-taught, confident and generous with his time, his mission a heady one when successful, painful when circumstances fail to support the evidence he offers to further such cases.

Botha does an excellent job introducing this character, reminding me of the addictive nature of such non-fiction. Throughout the book, Frank's reputation is built case by case, as identities are validated, cold cases solved and murderers reclaimed from the lives they have rebuilt after escaping the consequences of their violent crimes. Age progression is invaluable in Bender's work, perhaps as significant as giving human likeness to the skulls he carefully sculpts. But by far the most challenging and frustrating is Bender's time in Mexico, attempting to aid authorities in solving the murders of countless young women whose bodies have been found in Juarez and Chihuahua. In spite of his meticulous recreations, a majority of the busts remain unidentified (even the Girl with the Crooked Nose), due mainly to inefficient procedures and the bureaucratic warfare of the Mexican government. Over all, Botha paints a fascinating portrait of a dedicated man who literally changed the face of forensic investigation, a fine career in public service that is significant in its impact. Ted Botha's book -- "The Girl With the Crooked Nose" -- is a thrilling account of the remarkable real-life adventures -- and remarkable life -- of forensic artist Frank Bender. The publication of this work fills a void that, for a long time, had been waiting to be filled.

The book succeeds on several levels. First, there is the "frame story," which concerns the mysterious disappearance and murder of hundreds of women in and around Juarez, Mexico. Bender is called in on the case and encounters a language which, after a while, becomes far more difficult for him to understand than Spanish: something mysterious, deceptive, altogether unnerving -- and dangerous. Ultimately the symbol of this convoluted and heartbreaking exploit is the Girl With the Cooked Nose, whose skull -- like those of the other murdered girls -- needs a face and a name.

On another level the book is about Frank Bender himself; and in moving back and forth between the present-day Juarez story and his biography, the fascination does not let up. This subject is in itself a valuable account on its own: his first exposure to forensics (a word he did not even know), his first (and incredibly successful) attempt to bring face to a skull and each elaborately different case thereafter, always working (like Sherlock Holmes) as a uncannily gifted "amateur" or bohemian "outsider"; the development of his approaches and all the interesting professional connections he makes as well as the macabre, touching scenarios that develop -- all these elements form an engaging catalog of one person's personal quest. To Botha's credit, the writer never depicts gore gratuitously but only as need to understand a case or the emotional reaction to a discovery.

In addition, students of forensic science will relish this book not only for the subject matter itself, of course, but for the insights into Bender's actual technique and his thought process -- his early uncertainties, his triumphs, his nightmares and his relationship with the nameless victim whose identity he must help uncover.

All in all, this is a fascinating and important work, not only because it deals with the tragic Juarez murders and with forensics but because it gives insight into the singular personality of Frank Bender. Not an easy person to profile, he is genuinely worth this kind of detailed treament.

Interesting look at a remarkable artist

Very intriguing look into the world of a forensic artist, the amazing Frank Bender. After I read "The Murder Room" by Michael Capuzzo (which I also recommend) about the Vidocq Society of which Frank was one of the founders, I was happy to see this book would focus on Frank's incredible ability to put a face on a skull or do an age-progression on a fugitive. The stories of the victims that Frank worked on are truly horrific and heartbreaking. The skulls of the murdered girls from Mexico are especially poignant because most have never been identified due in large part to the ineffective bureaucracy of their government. This book is a fascinating look into the mind of a remarkable man who gave faces to the forgotten.
