Popular culture + romance = great entertainment!

I snapped up BLAST FROM THE PAST a day after publication--lucky me. Toni's series starring Tilda Harper, who knows everything about old pop culture, has been consistently good, but this one is the best. Tilda tries to find a mysterious comic book artist, the secretive "Leviathan," while trying to solve a series of accidents and deaths around the filming of Leviathan's masterful PHAROS. Toni Kelner knows her comics and filmmaking--there are a lot of in-jokes for fans--but if you don't know a thing about either, this deftly plotted romantic thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat. Agatha-winner Toni keeps busy co-editing NY Times bestselling anthologies with Charlaine Harris, but here's hoping she'll have time for many more Tilda Harper novels as well.

entertaining journalist investigative mystery

Freelance reporter Tilda Harper writes articles on the famous and not so famous Hollywood personalities for the entrainment magazines. Don, the owner of a security company, works for the Pharos movie team who are filming outdoors on the Cape. He and Tilda know each other from when she was dating his son Nick. He invites her to interview the star of the movie John Laryea.
She is invited to stay at the hotel and watch the shoot, which she agrees to do as she can sell a lot of stories about the experience. Three days after she arrives she is on the side of the road when a speeding car hits two people the star and his assistant. Everyone but Tildy believes Pete Ellis the chauffeur who works for Don is guilty as his limo killed her assistant. When the police find Pete, he is passed out drunk and taken into custody. Tildy promises to snoop around to exonerate him with the truth at the same time she seeks Leviathan the author who wrote the comic book the movie is based on.
Watching the protagonist conduct two different inquiries is fascinating as each involves a person with a secret to hide. This entertaining journalist investigative mystery is filled with vivid descriptions leading to armchair readers believing they are on location. The movie support cast adds quirky humor to a serious whodunit as like her other blasts from the past (Curse of the Kissing Cousins and Who Killed the Pin-Up Queen), the latest Where Are They Now? Harper tale is a great read.

Blasting Off!

I liked this installment in the Where Are They Now? mysteries, even if it was a little different than the other two. Tilda spends the majority of the book on-location with a film crew on Cape Cod instead of bouncing between her apartment and the Entertain Me! offices. She's working on a story about Pharos, an upcoming blockbuster film adaptation of a popular cult comic book. Oh yeah, she also has to track down the writer/artist of the comic, who hasn't been heard from since it was canceled. All in a day's work!
Pharos, both the comic and the movie based on it, is really neat. The other fictional creations from previous books, Kissing Cousins and Cowtown, were just as well realized, but had a certain cheeseball factor to them. This allowed for plenty of jokey material, and it was a lot of fun. Pharos, on the other hand, could be a truly awesome comic book. I can picture the lighthouse and the mermaid Melusine and everything. I loved all the scenarios in this comic-within-a-book. By the end it felt like it was a real comic I had read.
Tilda does some of her best investigative work in this book. I love watching her work. I've always enjoyed watching her process of elimination, especially when it comes to Internet nutcases. This time she interviews a variety of interesting folk in the movie and comic businesses. It was fun to get a behind-the-scenes look at these two industries, which I am not really familiar with. All of this would have been compelling enough, but then there's a hit-and-run murder mystery to solve to build tension even more.
I felt Tilda grew a bit in this book. She decides not to gossip about an actor's shortcomings and almost comes to love her current bad roommate's menagerie of animals. I was a little disappointed that I only got to see Cooper a couple times in this one. And simply via telephone, no less! He was in the last book a lot though, so I'll survive. And a part of me also missed Tilda and Nicole's bitchy repartee. But this fun detour was a great way to keep things fresh and me craving more. Can't wait for the next book in this fun series.
