Code Name Caesar: The Secret Hunt for U-Boat 864 During World War II, by Jerome Preisler, Kenneth Sewell

In the waning days of World War II, a little-known battle took place under the frozen seas off the coast of Norway . . . and changed the course of the war.

In February of 1944, Germany and Japan devised a desperate plan to escape defeat. The Germans would send Japan a submarine—boat U-864—packed with their most advanced rocket and jet aircraft technology. Japan could then reestablish air superiority in the Pacific, drawing the attention of Allied forces long enough for Germany to regroup.

Meanwhile, British code breakers, working with the Norwegian underground, had discovered the plan. But even though they were unable to stop the submarine from embarking, the British submarine HMS Venturer was waiting for it at sea. In a cat-and-mouse battle beneath the waves, they hunted one another, each waiting to strike. The Venturer won the game, becoming the only submarine in history to sink another sub in underwater combat.

This is the dramatic, action-packed account of one of the greatest unsung victories in military history, and of a historical moment in the annals of naval warfare.

This was a real find. American publishers tend to focus on general histories of World War II, or unit histories and memoirs of U.S. Marines in the Pacific, the 101st Airborne in Europe, or B-17s over Germany. Don't get me wrong. I am not belittling any of these brave people or what they accomplished. I have the greatest respect and admiration for what they did in serivce to their country and for us. My father survived the Battle Of The Bulge and being a P.O.W. in Germany when the Third Reich was crumbling and he and many others nearly starved or froze to death. There were far to many who did succumb to those and other sufferings. What I am saying is that there were other aspects of that conflict that deserve attention, andf this book does that. We need to remember that our staunch allies of the British commonwealth and other countries were in the war over two years longer than we were, and they had more than their share of experiences that need to be documented and remembered. This book covers the cooperative efforts between Germany and Japen to share German technology and resources, the Norwegian resistance against the Nazis, and British air and submarine efforts against the German U-boats that were based out of Occupies Norway. God only knows how hard it is to find very much on British submarine operations during that war or any other. Though their submarine force was smaller than ours, it served longer in more theaters of war far longer and deserves more recognition for what it acheived. The Norwegian resistance had a long hard five year struggle against Hitler's empire. These all need to be illuminated and remembered. The final chapter focuses on the Action between U864 and the H.M.S. Venturer in the first and only known example of two submarined dueling it out totally submerged. What makes it more intriguing is tha fact that the British submarine commander refused to use active sonar to spot the Germans for fear of giving himself away. He did it the hard way using his brain and tried and true tactics. This book is well researched with exteensive notes citing sources. It could have used a separate bibliography and index, but because or the obscure but significant subject matter, I refuse to take off points for that. Kudos to the authors and the publisher for this one. It was refreshing and highly informative. I hope we see more like it.

Not as good as the other reviewers think.

I borrowed "Code Name Caesar" from the library based on what two reviewers here wrote. Having read their reviews and noted the subtitle, "The Secret Hunt for U-Boat 864..." I expected an exciting chase story. What I found instead was still an interesting story, but the actual hunt for that particular U-boat doesn't begin until very near the end of the book, so the subtitle is misleading. And "Code Name Caesar" isn't mentioned anywhere except in the title. So don't expect anything remotely resembling the high-stakes pursuit promised in the title.

More important, this book is not really that well written. As a semi-retired editor and writer, I am dismayed at how often I encounter misspellings and bad grammar. This book has neither of these faults, but its glaring problems are the dull writing and the lackluster (and somewhat confusing) organization.

Good writers have the ability to make a story come alive. That's a gift, even when they have to sweat bullets to make it happen. The authors of this book don't have that gift, and this book suffers as a result.

My impression? B-, tending toward a C+. Three stars is slightly generous.

The story is very interesting if somewhat marred by the disjointed presentation of the story. The characters are portrayed very realistically with sound reference to research material. The sole complaint I had was the back and forth nature of the storytelling that moved to and fro in time and was frequently jarring.
