This Is Robert E Howard's Conan
By Stephen H. Jay
Know O'Prince that between the times of the scribes of Baen Press and the rise of The Arnold there was an age undreamed of. When false scribblings and idiotic movie scripts did claim the name Conan, when the land was filled with the lamentations of Howard fans and the gnashing of their teeth as illiterate friends said unto them, "Hey, did you catch that new Conan movie? The one with the Austrian body-builder? Pretty cool, huh?"

That age has now come to an end, for hither comes Michael A. Stackpole.

Yes, this new novel is just that good. If the movie even comes close to it, then the era of Arnold Schwarzenegger as the false face of Robert E Howards iconic character is over.

But let's talk about the book.

Written in a voice and style much like Howard's own, Stackpole stakes out a story in previously uncharted territory - Conan as a young boy. Drawing heavily and competently on Howard's own works (as well as the "official" contributions of L. Sprague De Camp and Robert Jordan), the story opens on Conan as an eleven year old boy. Born on the battlefield, cut from the womb of his dying mother by his father, Conan has great expectations thrown upon him from the very beginning. His tribesmen see his birth as an omen that not only will Conan be a great warrior, but that he is destined to be an example to the world of what it means to be Cimmerian.

Yet the expectations of Conan's father, his dead mother, and of Conan himself are even greater. I'm not going to give it away here, for the pronouncement of Conan's mother has an impact in the story you should experience for yourself. Suffice to say that when you're done reading of his childhood, you will understand how and why Conan becomes more than just the greatest warrior of his world, but also how and why he has become the immortal icon of ferocious courage, strength, and grim determination.

Besides making Conan seem like a real person rooted in a real life in the fabulously distant land of Hyboria, Stackpole weaves this books story cleverly and astutely into the overall chronology of Conan literature. After we leave Conan as a boy we rejoin him 14 years later as a young man. It is at a time where Conan is even more melancholy than usual, and for good reason; he has lost the first true love of his life, Belit, the pirate queen. And while his grief is not "worn on his shoulder" like it would be with so many of us mere mortals, it does cause him to be in the right place at the right time to exact a revenge that has been nearly two decades in coming.

This book has everything Conan fans should want: Clear, flowing script that immediately stirs the imagination; an informed writers dedicated respect and fondness for both the character and the creator; exciting, vivid battle sequences; and an enemy that is both despicable and pitiable. But it also has something that many of the full-length Conan novels, even the good ones, do not - a Conan that is heroic, instantly recognizable, and authentically real. Many of my favorite Conan novels of the past took a two-dimensional Conan and pitted him against interesting and humanly realistic villains in an epic storyline. Stackpole has done all that, and made Conan humanly realistic as well. No doubt Mr Stackpole will be criticized for taking some logical liberties with Howard's mostly two-dimensional character, as some of the earliest authors took some heat for turning Conan into a character that could carry a novel instead of just a short story. So be it. This Conan is just too good, too satisfying, to miss.

Its not Robert E. Howard's Vision of Conan, but still Great!
By OneWhoWalkedAlone
Its not Robert E. Howard's Vision of Conan, but still Great! I am a diehard Robert E Howard fan, as well as a fan of the character Conan. This book is a nice change of pace from some of the other incarnations of the Conan character. While it would have been nice to see a true to form version of a Robert E Howard story being used for the upcoming movie, im not exactly turned off by this version! I especially like how they flesh out Conans childhood in this novel, so Kudo's to Mr Stackpole for taking an original story and making it believable! If you like this book and havent read Robert E Howard, i strongly suggest picking up the forthcoming companion book (Late July 2011) titles Stories that inspired Conan The Barbarian, its gonna have like 5 stories in it (not sure which ones yet) but a nice introductory package to get aquainted with Mr Howards works!

An enjoyable visit to the Conan I miss.
By Amazon Customer
I was not given my copy of the book. I was not asked to or paid to write this review.

I consider myself a Conan fan. I've read many of Robert E Howard's books. I read the Marvel comics. I even read a couple of Robert Jordan's Conan novels. And of course I've seen all the movies.

I'm a fan, not a fanatic. I know much about Conan lore, but I couldn't recite the Hyborian Knowledge as many could. I just enjoy a good read and Conan can provide that.

I'm also a fan of Mike Stackpole. I enjoy his works and his writing style. I have read several of his books and have more on my to read pile.

I saw that the Conan movie was about to come out and I knew that Stackpole was going to write the novelization. I grabbed it for my kindle as soon as it was available. I love technology. I didn't, however, start reading until after I had seen the movie. Too many times I've been disappointed by a movie after reading the book.

Sadly the new Conan movie was lacking. It was a shallow representation of Conan lore. It seemed like a minor transition from big fight scene to big fight scene. There was little development of the character. At least with the Arnold movies we had a running dialog to fill in many holes.

I worried that the book would also be lacking, but knowing Michael, I dove into the book. At first I was confused. It didn't start where the movie started. I didn't mind though. I didn't need a long explanation of Conan being born on the battlefield. In great Stackpolean fashion, he brought Conan's birth into the novel through conversation. Something the movie lacked a lot of was conversation and Michael brought that into the novel.

He also brought us the Conan history that Howard always had in his stories. That background needed to fill in so many gaps left in the movie. Where the movie failed, the novel succeeded. I finished the book quickly, finding it difficult to put down. It was such an enjoyable read. I can only hope that Michale Stackpole is allowed to revisit this universe and continue on the Conan tradition. After reading this book, he's earned the right.
