From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Bestseller Thomas strikes gold again with her seventh Whispering Mountain historical (after Wild Texas Rose), set in 1879 Texas. When 24-year-old Beth McMurray sneaks onto a train to surprise her fiancé, former Senator Lamont LaCroix, she's shocked to overhear him bragging about his plans for her and her money. Then robbers board the train and it goes off the rails. Just before the crash, one of the robbers grabs Beth and jumps off the train, taking the fall to protect her. He's hurt, but she stays with him, claiming that he's her husband. The sheriff and the doctor believe that Beth is now Mrs. Andrew McLaughlin, but LaCroix does not. Meanwhile, widower Andrew reveals his hidden depths: when he's not robbing trains, he longs to be an author. By the time Beth drives a wagon out of town, she has collected a pretend husband, two little boys, an ill teen cowboy, and a pregnant young woman, and the adventure has just begun. Complex plotting, superb character development, and touching romantic scenes make this a winner. Agent: Gail Fortune, Talbot Fortune Agency. (Nov.)

Sweet
By MarciaS
Promise Me Texas is nicely written and so very sweet. I'd recommend the novel because it is very well written, but I don't really consider it a keeper.
Jodi Thomas consistently writes nice, sweet novels. This one concerns Beth McMurray, who is on the run from a toad of a fiance. As she schemes to make her way back to her family while avoiding scandal, she quickly assembles a ready-made family of a husband (Andrew McLaughlin), two orphaned boys, a teenage girl, and an injured cowboy. Even more characters are added later.
The story began to lose my interest from its Pollyanaish, overly treacly-sweet outlook. Not that bad things don't happen in the novel, because bad things do. But there's a feeling of fairy dust being sprinkled over the main characters and it becomes increasingly annoying.
Beth and her new family all come together harmoniously, without any of the conflicts that normally would arise among strangers living together for the very first time.
The author takes frequent detours from the developing romance between Beth and Andrew to explore the stories of the side characters. These detours occasionally feel like filler, hinting that this story was probably more suitable for a novella. Unfortunately, the detours also help drain the passion out of the love story between Beth and Andrew.
Ultimately, the book feels less like a romance and more like... Actually, I'm not really sure what that other women's fiction genre is called. It feels like one of those books where the story's focus is women's fulfillment in mostly non-romantic relationships. Where women find life's meaning in being sisters and daughters, good neighbors, understanding friends, forgiving ex-wives, opening an bed-and-breakfast, beating cancer, like that. One of those novels that has a bazillion characters but not one is at all memorable.
I really wish I liked this one better because Jodi Thomas sometimes writes surprisingly touching narratives. There's a moment when Beth notices the worn and tattered clothing of gambler and realizes he must have lived a hard, miserable existence. Then there's that scene when the lonely Andrew falls asleep on the saddlebags containing his diaries. Or when Cody is afraid to go home because he's not sure if his father even wants him to return. Cody's fear and despair are so real. There are so many touching scenes in this book. By the second half, however, these scenes began to feel repetitive.

Promise Me Texas is a winner!
By Cheryl Koch
Beth is on her way to meet up with her soon to by husband. She decides to surprise him. She books a seat on the train. She learns things about her soon to by husband that she is glad she found out before she made it official. Like he is a jerk, who wants a trophy wife and is marrying because it is good for his image and not for love. Before Beth can confront her fiance, the train gets highjacked.
Andrew awakes to find himself in the arms in a beautiful woman. She claims that they are married. How long will Andrew go along with the "fake" marriage?
So the best part about reading a Jodi Thomas book is meeting all of her characters. They are not just characters in a book but they are like family. This was no exception with this book. Beth and Andrew made a cute couple. There were no real surprises how this story would end but it was fun reading and seeing when Beth and Andrew would figure it out themselves. It was long that long after Beth and Andrew said "I Do" that they were starting up a fire with their kisses. However Andrew was a gentleman. Beth was strong willed which is a quality that I enjoyed about her. All the secondary characters were just a great. They are people that I would want to hang out with. Promise Me Texas is a winner!

Not your typical cowboy story!
By TAG Publishing
This book is another great one from Jodi Thomas. I think I particularly liked this one because the characters are different. They are flawed and imperfect and watching them gain redemption while falling in love is a wonderful journey. The Characters of Beth and Andrew read as very real people just doing the best they can do in unexpected circumstances and are much more relatable than the stereotypical handsome hero cowboy sweeping the damsel in distress of her feet. In the end, they save themselves and each other in a heartwarming and affirming way. Great job Miss Thomas!
