Not for everyone; but a damn fine read for the rest

This series has always been largely satisfying only to a particular group of people. The first one read like a moderately competent fan fiction, the second made leaps and bounds but still had our protagonist bulling over armies on her way to the market, and this entry built on the successes of its immediate predecessor to become a pretty darn good read in its own right.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Ia is a MASSIVE precog the likes of which I've never seen in fiction. The only thing keeping her from being omniscient is a finite amount of time. Yes, she's that powerful. Almost any information she could possibly need is at her fingertips. She's so powerful, she can read the past, present, and future of ALTERNATE REALITIES, in addition to her own.

In addition to her frankly overpowered precognition, Ia is a highly accomplished electrokinetic, which basically means she can manipulate electricity at will. Opening locked doors? Cake. Typing precognitive missives as fast as a thought? More cake. Piloting an alien vessel without touching the controls? Cake, cake everywhere!

She has telekinesis, pyrokinesis, and even telepathy thrown in for good measure. Her final super power is being from a very heavy world; the heaviest heavy world, on the backside of Terran space (as she's often wont to remind us). This means that despite the fact that she's a woman, she's at least twice as strong as Arnold Schwarzenegger. All packed in a svelte, attractive figure.

In terms of combat, there is virtually nothing she cannot do. In a classical sense, this drains away a lot of the potential for dramatic tension from the series. A lot of what writers use to create tension is the uncertainty of success. Ia isn't bound by such trivialities.

So what could possibly be entertaining about a character that can do anything? I'm glad you asked such a pertinent question!

First, Ia's task is equal to her abilities. She's out to save the galaxy from certain destruction, and it requires manipulating things on a micro- and macro-scale. Even with her prodigious skill, the odds are actually stacked against her.

Second, Ia the character is fairly tragic. Until this book that fact has been largely unexplored (another point in its favor if you ask me) but the concept of her is rather compelling. A fifteen year old forced to witness the death of a galaxy, driven to become something she despises in order to accomplish something she wants, and all the while sacrificing her own happiness for the greater good at every turn. True, the other two books did a piss poor job of elucidating this fact, but it was always there.

Third, for all Jean Johnson's technical faults in the writing of this book series, she has succeeded in one very important way; she not only told us Ia had a complicated, far reaching plan to save the galaxy, she showed us. Little hints from the first novel become relevant in the third, tiny throwaway sentences that one might write off as mistakes turn out to be pretty monumental revelations later on.

This fact alone elevates this series above what it appears at face value. Because, while dramatic tension was taking a vacation in the first book only to phone it in in the second book, these books have read almost like mysteries. It became a guessing game to pick up on those tiny hints and try to piece together Ia's plan.

We're being drip fed information and it's actually pretty compelling to try and figure it all out. At least for me.

Finally, there is something viscerally satisfying about an overpowered character. As an audience, it's almost like an in-joke. We get to revel in the other characters' reactions to Ia, cheer her on as she butchers all that stand in her path, and basically just indulge our baser instincts. It's almost cathartic.

So, having written such a longwinded preamble, what of Hellfire? If Soldier's Duty was a moderately competent fan fiction and Officer's Duty a below average novel, then Hellfire is a stone's throw away from a good one. Where the preceding two titles were a collection of viscerally satisfying but ultimately shallow events, Hellfire finally capitalizes on some of the character of Ia's potential.

With her abilities no longer secret, I like to think Ia doesn't have to be as guarded about her true feelings. And, considering she has the deaths of every living being in the galaxy to lull her to sleep at night, those feelings are probably pretty darn dark. This shift in tone is effectively done, if not expertly so, and by the end of the novel you actually end up feeling some of that pain yourself. Quite strongly in fact.

One of the things Jean Johnson has struggled with in the past is foreshadowing. Several times she'd foreshadow something moments before that information was relevant instead of dozens if not hundreds of pages before. This led to very clunky and ultimately unsatisfying reveals and circumstances.

It wasn't always the case. As I've said, she dropped a ton of hints that didn't play out till the next novel, but it was a sign of her growth as a writer. She still wasn't quite there.

But in Hellfire, one of the characters involved in the most intense climactic moment of the series is foreshadowed almost before the book really got going.

As a novel, the fact that the odds are stacked against her is clearly explained without feeling contrived, her emotional state has received a great deal more attention, and her near omnipotence is blasted into so many tiny pieces.

Before, she operated on such a small scale that all the things she needed to accomplish could be accomplished by her and her alone. But that is no longer the case, and it allows for a great deal more dramatic tension. She may be perfect, but her subordinates aren't.

I'll say this and leave you to decide whether any of this sounds like something you're interested in: Hellfire is probably the first real novel Jean Johnson has ever written. It has most of the elements of a good novel; dramatic tension, character development, character drama, action and reaction. It is the most complete novel I've read from her to date and was satisfying on more than just a visceral level.

Plot is still largely absent, but then you don't necessarily need a plot to tell a story (see Patrick Rothfuss' 'The Name of the Wind' and 'The Wise Man's Fear').

Despite that, it's very important for you, the reader, to decide what sort of story you want to invest your time and money into. Hellfire may have reinstated Dramatic Tension, but Ia is still an overpowered character. And in order to fully understand this series, you'll have to slog through books 1 and 2.

If you prefer stories about characters that succeed despite being underpowered, you'll probably hate this series. If flaws stick out to you like a sliver under your nail, you'll probably hate this series.

But on the flip side if you've been perfectly satisfied with the preceding two books you may actually be disappointed in this book. It's darker, it's more personal, but above all Ia is no longer wholly responsible for the success of her missions. Things DO go wrong. She's no longer completely overpowered.

Go into it with an open mind either way.

Great Book, Great Series, Great Author

I love this book. As much as I love the whole series. Each release in the series (to me) is a top highlight of my scifi book reading year.That is extremely high (to me) especially since I read about 2~4 books a week.

Anyone that loves the Honorverse Series, Vorkosigan adventures, etc would find little to complain about this series.

Ms Johnson drives this series and books like a pro. Never once was it dull. Never once was it too rushed. Never once did it break immersion for me (well as least until it ended in which I was going NOOOOOOOOOO!)

It was a beautiful story from start to end. A true scifi work of art by a talented and experienced writer.

Ms Johnson if you ever read this. Please give up your romance works (sorry I am a guy). You write scifi too well and I eagerly await for more books in the Ia series as well as any more of other scifi works you release.

Waiting eagerly for DAMNATION.

Excellent book in great series

Third in the series Theirs Not To Reason Why.

Ia, AKA Bloody Mary, is a powerful precog who has foreseen the destruction of all life in the Galaxy in just 300 years. After an exhaustive search of the timelines, she found one slim chance, a set of choices that lead to one person able to save us under certain circumstances. Now, it is up to her to make sure this path is followed by everyone else during the next 300 years, even after her death. To do this, she must become recognized as "The Prophet of a Thousand Years".

Now as Captain of TUPSF Hellfire, the most powerful warship in the Terran United Planets Space Force, she must guide her crew in shaping the future path to salvation. The Second Salik War is just a step in this path. Some must live and some must die, worlds will survive or perish, but she is the one who must decide and bear the regrets that not everyone can be saved. And even seeing the choices does not mean the necessary actions will take place.

Ms Johnson seems to write in four book blocks, so there is at least one more book involving Ia, possibly more. Hopefully, she will return to this universe that she has created after that. She has left a multitude of strings to pick up in other series, including the Sanctuary civil war, the Fire Girl, and the final confrontation with the Zida"ya in 300 years.

A clear change in direction, but still Jesse...

Your reaction to the simple existence of a Jesse Stone novel written by someone who's not Robert B. Parker will likely define your approach to reading it.

If, like me, you are a long-time reader of the late, lamented Grand Master Parker, you will be rightly skeptical. The stylistic differences, coupled with clearly different skill-sets, will be off-putting. The choices Michael Brandman makes early in the book will drive you crazy. You might want to fling the book out a window, even.

If, however, you come to Killing The Blues as an admirer of the Jesse Stone TV-Movies, on which Brandman and Parker were frequent collaborators, you'll likely be spared such self-righteous angst.

Brandman seems to be blurring the lines between book and movie continuity now, to the point that Killing The Blues is much like those "tv tie-in" books that support CSI and other long-running series. The settings and characters now resemble the movies more than previous books.

By itself, Killing The Blues is a very effective story of obssession, redemption and all the themes Parker made resonate so well. It weaves a few compelling plot-lines together pretty seamlessly. It's very entertaining crime-fiction commerce.

As summer approaches Paradise, Jesse is greeted with a new wave of car thefts, all Hondas. Clearly an organized-crime expansion into His Town to feed their chop-shop appetites. Jesse wants to stop the crimes, but the Paradise Board of Selectmen want to stop the threat to The Season, which creates some cross-purposes, and opportunities for Jesse to display his ironic aversion to authority.

Jesse hears from his old boss in L.A. A former victim of Jesse's dark past, Ruthless Thug Rollo Nurse, has been released, and word has drifted that Jesse will be his target. The cat-and-mouse between Jesse and Rollo form the core of the book's narration. The other threads of Brandman's story weave around it, and provide nice balance.

When Parker died, Jesse seemed headed towards a really fun relationship with Sunny Randall. That's "resolved" rather quickly, so we can watch Jesse do the dance with Alexis Richardson, neice of a town Selectman, and PR person. She wants to launch a Rock Festival in town. Sparks fly, take-out is consumed, frolic ensues.

As Jesse gets close on the car-thefts, Rollo arrives and begins to work his twisted revenge scheme on Jesse. Brandman stages these quite well, creating some real loin-girding moments for us. He also does good work in forcing us to observe Rollo's psychosis as a result of Jesse's Great Flaw. It'll keep ya thinking.

Brandman also takes a trendy whack at school bullying, starting and finishing an episode at the local Junior High providing some character beats for Jesse, but nothing significant beyond them.

So, for Parker fans, what's missing? The obvious is that Parker wrote human dialogue better than almost anyone, so anyone else using the characters is going to suffer by comparison. There's also a marginalization of Molly Crane that is saddening. She's there for comic relief, but the banter between her and Jesse is just functional, totally lacking Parker's insightfulness. She is, here, a reflection of the TV version.

And there's the whole commercial orientation. Parker loved to make money, of course, but he always had something on his mind, and used his characters to flesh out those thoughts. Brandman has a whole other direction here, and it occasionally disrupts the reading experience.

However, anyone getting too high on their horse should remember, in literature, characters always live on. Parker wrote a Philip Marlowe by himself (Perchance To Dream), after finishing Chandler's Poodle Springs, and it was huge fun. Jeffrey Deaver just published a James Bond novel. Ace Atkins (YAY!) will pick up the Spenser series. The key is how involved the Parker estate remains in the execution of these series. That influence will determine the quality of future installments primarily by ensuring selected authors stay true to what made the characters worth continuing in the first place.

So, get Killing The Blues, have fun with it, be wistful, and enjoy the ride. It's what Parker would've wanted us to do.

I Wish This Was Not Written, But......

I will admit I was, and am an avid fan of the PARKER written Jesse Stone books. In fact as his series' got into their later incarnations I enjoyed the Stone stories (except for one) better than the later Spenser tales. Having said that there was a part of me that was excited that the books would go on, but a larger part of me dreaded the idea.

When I heard that this new author (of "Killing the Blues") worked on the Jesse Stone tv movies I was REALLY dreading this novel, and what at first looked like my prediction coming true, ended up being a nice surprise.

At first glimpse over the opening pages (or the Kindle sample) I began to fear the worst....as in quick order the "book" Jesse/Paradise, was slightly skewed so that it resembled more the "tv" Jesse/Paradise. The slight changes (no big spoilers here as this is in the first few pages) include Jesse moving from his apartment to a rental house on an inlet across from a bridge, his romance with Parker's other character, Sunny Randall, is on ice as she is now working long term on a case in England. A slight change that is difficult to miss, is that the writing style is vastly different, and this is both bad and good. The negative is that it does not have the same "feel" of the shorter chapters that end with some sort of one liner. The positive is that the author pays more attention to the story...let me rephrase that, stories - as there are multiple plot lines that kept me engaged.

Once I got past the differences and recognized that there were not to be any more and any vast changes I began to enjoy the book, and again there was much in the plot to enjoy. A released criminal from L.A. is out for revenge and causing havok in Paradise. There is a school hostage sitation and the fall out from that, and a mob element that is muscling in, using Paradise as its home. In a Parker novel, one of these might be the only plot, so I found the book rich and engaging with much to keep the story moving forward.

Having said that, there were some significant alterations that might bother some more than it did for me, though it was nice to finally get away from some of these..(Minor Spoilers this paragraph)....Jesse no longer has a dog, but a cat adopts him, which seems very un Jesse-like. In addition his wife, Jenn, is hardly mentioned, and makes zero appearance in this book...not even a phone call, so that hang up seems to be over, which while out of character for these books does serve as a relief to those of us readers who were tiring of that never ending loop. Finally, Jesse's drinking is no longer a problem. He has a scotch or beer occassionally in the book, but there is no wrestling over how many, etc. - they just seemed to take the "issue" away so he no longer has a problem (though the problem did exhist because his past treatment of a criminal is part of this book's plot).

I was surprised by the end at how much I enjoyed this book. If you are fan of the series and can get through some of the alterations you may end up liking it too. Unlike other reviews on this page, though, you might want to read it first, before putting forth your final judgement!

Please stop Michael Brandman before he kils again

Jesse Stone was a Robert Parker character because he spoke sparingly, didn't tell everyone everything he knew, and SHOWED us his character through his actions. A complex character, to be sure, but you always wanted to know how things were going to turn out--in the plot and for Jesse. This book is the opposite of that style. The author doesn't show you what's happening. Instead, he tells you with a million little contrived backstories, inartfully inserted so as to break the narrative drive. Also, it's a swamp of pop-psychology adjectives and behavior and pretty much every character in it is made out of low-grade cardboard. And the sexual attraction between characters was apparently ordered from the Acme Company.

Parker: Tell me about you and Kinsey Millhone and the connection between you.

Grafton: Kinsey Millhone is my alter ego, the woman I might have been had I not married young and had children. She's younger, thinner, and braver than I, but a good companion nonetheless. Since she can know only what I know, I've taken classes in criminal law and self-defense. I've studied police procedure, private eye procedure, toxicology, ballistics, and crime scene investigation. Beyond that, the prime agreement between us is that I don't tell her, she tells me. When readers ask what she’ll be doing after Z is for Zero, I assure them I haven't the faintest idea.

Parker: Describe your writing process (e.g., I get up in the morning, have a martini to get my heart going…).

Grafton: I take a 5.4-mile walk five days a week, so my writing schedule is often dictated by the weather. If it's too hot or too cold, I walk first thing in the morning, come home, shower, dress, and reach my desk at 9:45 or so. I work until lunch, when I take a short break, returning to my desk until mid-to-late afternoon. If I haven't done a morning walk, I walk when my work is done. Then I drink.

Parker: You've spent time in Hollywood. Tell me about that.

Grafton: I refer to that period of my life as "doing one to fifteen in Hollywood." I loved it at first, as dazzled as anyone who hasn't figured out yet how treacherous life there can be. As I've said on previous occasions, I learned two things about myself in Hollywood: one, I'm not a team player; and two, I'm not a good sport. The producers I met were well-educated and articulate, and usually offered me a cup of coffee before they set in to savaging my work. I got too old and cranky to put up with that, so I invented Kinsey Millhone as my way out. I liken it to digging my way out of prison with a teaspoon.

Parker: Do you read reviews? Pay attention to them? Find them helpful? Have an opinion on them?

Grafton: Where possible, I avoid reviews. The good ones only encourage swell-headedness and the bad ones hurt my feelings or infuriate me. In either case, by the time reviews appear, the book is written and out on the stands. What's a poor girl to do? There's no point in subjecting myself to the reactions of readers and reviewers, since their response is nothing I can control.

Parker: People sometimes ask me why I write what I write, and I answer, "Because that's what I know how to do." (Then they say, "Would you please stop?" but I'm sure they're just kidding.) Talk about why you write what you write.

Grafton: I write what I write because when I put in my application for a position at Sears, they never got back to me. I'm still hopeful, especially with the Christmas season coming up. Aside from that, I write what I write because when the work is going well, it makes me happier than just about anything except my kids and grandkids. When the work is not going well . . . which is maybe thirty-five percent of the time . . . I know it's my job to sit patiently and keep at it until I figure out what's wrong. In large part, writing is the only thing I know how to do.

Sue Grafton's "U is for Undertow" takes place in 1988, with flashbacks to 1967, the "Summer of Love." Kinsey Millhone, thirty-seven, is the veteran of two failed marriages. Most of her time is devoted to her work as a private investigator, and she occasionally socializes with a small group of friends, including her eighty-eight year old landlord, Henry Pitts. Kinsey's latest case involves Michael Sutton, who claims that he recently recalled an event that occurred when he was just six years old. In July of 1967, four-year-old Mary Claire Fitzhugh was abducted from her home in Horton Ravine, California. Although her parents agreed to pay the ransom demanded by Mary Claire's kidnappers, the money was not picked up and the child was never seen again. Sutton remembers playing in the woods when he saw two men digging a hole and burying a bundle in the ground, and he cannot help but wonder if the pair was burying the corpse of little Mary Claire. Michael hires Kinsey to reconstruct the past and find out if his memories are accurate.

Although Millhone is far from physically imposing, she has resources that may be more effective than brute force: Kinsey is smart, intensely curious, and reluctant to give up once she starts an investigation. When Kinsey is stymied, she shuffles the index cards on which she records her notes and tries to see matters from a different perspective. Sooner or later, she usually connects the dots. This mystery has many familiar elements, including long buried secrets, dysfunctional families, greed, stupidity, and selfishness. In addition, Grafton provides the reader with a poignant glimpse into Kinsey's early life that helps explain why she is a loner who is reluctant to trust anyone. In Grafton's world, the conflicts between relatives can sometimes resemble a mini-Civil War, with mutilated bodies littering the battlefield.

Grafton is a gifted storyteller whose solid descriptive writing, crisp dialogue, and well-constructed plot keep "U is for Undertow" moving along swiftly and satisfyingly. The author's flashbacks are not merely gimmicks to pad the story. They are essential elements that bring clarity to a tragic series of events whose roots lie in the past. Since Kinsey's inquiries pre-date the technological revolution, she does her research in the library, consulting yearbooks, telephone directories, and microfilms of old newspaper articles. Being a PI was much tougher in those days. "U is for Undertow" is another winner from an extremely talented author. It has memorable characters and thought-provoking psychological and historical themes that will resonate with Grafton's many devoted fans.

If You've Never Read a Sue Grafton Mystery, This is It

This is my first experience reading a Sue Grafton mystery. What a treat! From the time I first started the book, she had me entranced. The story revolves around Kinsey Millhone, a 37 year old private investigator, who is hired to investigate an unsolved kidnapping of a little girl, Mary Claire Fitzhugh who disappeared twenty years before. Her probing, which at first seems to lead to a dead end, actually unleashes a tangle of complicated stories that provides insight to the twenty year mystery.

The setting splits between 1988, the "current" time of Kinsey's investigation, and 1967, the year of the child's kidnapping. The narration forks between Kinsey Millhone as she unfolds some inconsistencies in what appears to be nothing on the surface, Deborah Unruh, the grandmother turned mother to a little girl who experienced a similar episode as the missing girl, and other characters who unfold and show the sometimes undignified side of human nature. Each of the character's stories are enthralling, told in a voice that mirrors reality and captures the intricate details that shows how events can mold the character and direction of a life. At first, the stories may seem independent of each other, but as events from the past collide with the present, it becomes evident that their stories are intertwined and come together to portray the truth of the past, bit by bit.

Additionally, another subplot unfolds regarding Kinsey's personal life--her reconciling resentment regarding her family. An orphan, Kinsey was raised by her aunt who alienated her from the rest of her family. This subplot of Kinsey discovering the truth about her past was touching, and added an intimate flair to an already moving narrative.

I'm glad that I stumbled upon Grafton's novel. She has a gift with storytelling, and her mystery was not only engaging but written masterfully. I may not have the background with the Kinsey Millhone mystery series, but with her narrating abilities, my lack of history with the Kinsey Millhone mysteries did not hinder my understanding of the book. This is great reading, the kind of story that rallies all of your emotions--from sympathy, to anger, to triumph. For those who enjoy mysteries and a well-written book, I give this novel my highest recommendation.

To Brie for sure!!!

Avery Aames did it again. What a wonderful mystery!!! It had me guessing until the very end. This time Matthew is getting married, but there is a murder involved. Will the wedding go off as planned or will the killer mess up everything? Charlotte is responsible for planning the food for the wedding all the while trying to figure out who the killer of not one but two people are. To add to her job, she has to worry about Jordon and his sister Jacky...are they involved?? What is Jordon's secret?? There were tears as well as breath holding moments. All in all a great read and I can't wait for the next one to come out.

Police Chief Umberto Urso entered Fromagerie Bessette, better known to the locals as "The Cheese Shop," to order his usual sandwich and, like everyone else in Providence, to ask questions. "Hey, I heard you set a wedding date." Wrong. Charlotte Bessette, owner of the shop, was looking forward to getting married to Jordan Pace, the love of her life, but the bells weren't ringing just yet. On the other hand Pastor Hildegard was marrying her cousin, Matthew, and her best friend, Meredith Vance in about ten days. U-ey had a nose bigger than the roll his Jarlsberg was in, but so did everyone else. Matthew's ex, Sylvie, was calling foul, but she had left him and the twins to fare for themselves.

Jordan's sister Jacky's parting with her husband hadn't been as amicable. Giacomo Capriotti had been abusive and she'd secretly come to town to escape his wrath. Grandmère Bernadette was a regular old spitfire and between her Hamlet production and her "Stomping the Grapes" benefit race for the rescue shelter, the town was sure to see some action. Unfortunately, some of the action, aside from the usual quibbling and gossip, would really liven up the town. Instead of serving up hash at the diner, Delilah excitedly served up the bad news. "He's dead in the cooler at the Igloo." Someone had clunked Giacomo over the head with a bucket of brie and blueberry at Hugo Hunter's ice cream shop.

Charlotte and her two shop assistants, Tyranne and Rebecca, were soon on the lookout for clues. "Miss Zook," Urso snapped at Rebecca, "do you know how psychiatrists define paranoia? Y-O-U." She was a big fan of television shows and had a slew of nutty ideas. Charlotte weighed her clues carefully, but eliminating suspects was not going to be easy. "C'est impossible. I saw her pacing at all hours with the baby." No, pépère wouldn't lie about le meutre, but someone was. Was everyone lying? Things would get even more complicated when the shop door slammed open and Rebecca gasped, "He's dead." At this rate, Charlotte wouldn't have any suspects if someone kept bumping them off!

Charlotte has her work cut out for her when murder and matrimony are on the menu. This mystery definitely is a lively one when everyone turns "into an amateur sleuth." Most of the characters have relationships that go way back and can be very candid with one another, something that makes the mystery even more fun. There are a lot of characters, but they are easy to sort out in this stand-alone mystery. There is a single clue that was thrown out that points the finger at someone, but only the real cozy mystery aficionado will catch it. In the meantime, the reader will have everything from Mafia-like characters, extortion, to the Witness Security Program to sort through in order to find out whodunit in this oooh la la delectable Cheese Shop Mystery!

Flat, annoying characters

I had much difficulty finishing this book. If it were not for the fact that I love cheese, I would have quit about halfway through. The first book in this series began well enough but the quality of the subsequent books has deteriorated. I found the plot of To Brie or Not to Brie uninteresting and the schemes to discover the identity of the killer were outrageously ridiculous. The characters in this story (as well as in the prior books) are one-dimensional, stereotypical caricatures - the overly perky, ageless grandmother, the annoying ever-present ex-wife, the prim and prudish town harpy, the brother of the murder victim whose violent acts and threats are TRO worthy, the list goes on. And don't get me started on Rebecca. While I understand that characters like these are found in nearly all cozies, there should be some kind of depth to them. These people were just downright flat and annoying; there was neither rhyme nor reason to their actions and the dialogue was lame. Charlotte herself has become a pushover, not worthy of a protagonist in a cozy mystery. At least not in my eyes.

I do love cheese and will read the next novel because I don't want to give up on it. I can forgive a not-so-good-plot but characters are what drive a cozy series. I hope that Ms. Aames takes a good look at her characters and attempts to make them more human and less cartoonish in her future books.

An adrenaline rush from start to finish.

Anyone familiar with the first two novels in The Gray Man series (The Gray Man (A Gray Man Novel) and On Target (A Gray Man Novel)) will know they are filled with action and adventure throughout the book. This third entry is certainly no exception. Author Mark Greaney takes the reader on a thrill ride that would make any amusement park proud. Moving from one challenge to the next Courtland Gentry's exploits kept my attention riveted to the pages of this book. Court has been hiding out from all the many factions who want to see him dead, most recently his ex-boss, Russian mobster Gregor Sidorenko. Hiding in the back-of-beyond jungles of South America worked for seven months but now a manhunter has found Gentry and it's time to move on. With only escape in mind Gentry is waiting in a bus station when he happens to hear a television news story concerning a man he once shared a prison cell with in Laos. Could this Eduardo Gamboa be the same Eddie Gamble he had known back in that prison? Because if so, then Court does not believe the man he had known could be guilty of what these news reports said. Before long Gentry finds himself a very unwilling actor in the bloody business of drugs and other crimes between two feuding Mexican drug lords. Between his former bosses in the CIA, his former boss in the Russian mob, and now these armed and decidedly dangerous Mexican criminals it will take an expert in survival to come out of this mess alive.

I enjoyed this book very much, in fact I have come to expect that from Greaney. It seemed as if there was action taking place almost every minute and the excitement factor was ramped up to heart pounding level for most of the novel. I don't read thrillers or adventure novels to spend my time hearing about how somebody's day went at the office. If I'm looking for adventure, then that's what I want. I'm asking an author to entertain me and take me out of the humdrum. As a reader I gained a little more insight into the background of Court Gentry, but there is still much more left to be revealed - I hope - in future novels.

There was one specific element in the novel where I would have liked to get some additional narrative. The story eventually revolves around a kidnapping with Gentry fighting to rescue that victim. Not just the reader, but Gentry himself lost all contact with that victim for a very long period of time. I began to wonder what it was that made The Gray Man so sure this hostage was even still alive. A few quick peeks into how the person was being treated would have helped the sympathetic and curious sides of my nature.

Court Gentry has more lives than a multitude of cats, but without his specialized ability to find his target, make plans which succeed, and remove the bad guys, there would not be much reason for him to exist as a fictional character. I'll take him just as the talented author writes him and be glad to do so. So, Mr Greaney, when can we expect book number four?

Great read!

I really enjoyed Ballistic, it moved extremely quickly and as with the author's other books, includes alot of info on the locale and economic/political conditions where the story takes place (in this novel, mainly Mexico).

I particularly like the fact that the author has a working knowledge of guns and fighting, nothing ruins a book more for me then to read that the hero pulls out a .48 magnum or some such gun that does not even exist.

The author is always raising the stakes in his novels, unlike most action/suspense novels, their is no down time or pages to skip due to shear boredom while the author describes in excruciating detail how his character feels. Instead, he shows you how the character feels through action, either in the present or via backstory.

My two wishes are that it (and the other two books) were longer. They really draw you in and I hated when they were over. I'd like to see some more backstory on Court's days in the SAD or even prior to that. What made him who he is? Can't wait for the next one.

I was critical of the first two Gray Man novels. While I liked the concept and the character of Courty Gentry, the first two books had simple, threadbare plots, shallow, flat characters, and repetitive overly-long, action scenes. But they were still well-written and fast-paced books.

In this third novel, Mark Greaney has improved considerably as a writer. For the first time, Courty Gentry actually comes across as a real person. The other characters are believable and not just cardboard cutouts. The story is more complex, mature, and well-developed. Rather than non-stop action, there is build-up to the action scenes, and Greaney does a much better job of creating suspense and maintaining tension.

While Flynn, Thor, and Silva are re-writting the same Muslim terrorist stories over and over again, Greaney sets Ballistic south of the border. Courty Gentry, still on the run in South America from CIA and Russian mafia assassins, arrives in Mexico to pay respects to a dead friend. There, he becomes embroiled in the drug wars as he protects his friend's family from a Mexican drug cartel and corrupt police. Greaney does a good job of depicting the bleak, violent conflict taking place in Mexico, without overloading his story with background and historical information. He portrays his fictional cartel leaders as these people are in real life; sadistic and completely apathetic to human life.

But, Ballistic did not quite make it to a five-star rating from me. The fast pace of the novel comes to an dead halt in the middle of the novel, where Court Gentry and the family under his protection are beiseiged in a house. This lengthy section just dragged on for too long, but the pace quickly picked up again after this. Also, without spoiling the ending, the climax seemed a little unlikely and strayed a bit from the gritty realism of the rest of the novel.

So, only two minor faults with the novel, and I enjoyed Ballistic far more than the new Daniel Silva, Brad Thor, or Tom Clancy books released this year. Mark Greaney is really starting to look like a promising author, and I'm really looking forward to more novels in this series, as well as the upcoming Tom Clancy book he "co"-wrote.

Christophe, soaring silently and quickly, traveled across the ceiling and into the room with seconds to spare before the door closed behind him with a muffled clanging sound. Several clicking noises sounded directly beneath and in front of where he hung, suspended, and he turned his attention downward.

Toward the . . . ninja.

Which startled him enough that he released his mist form, plummeted down from the ceiling, and landed on his ass. “What in the nine hells—”

The figure in scarlet whirled around and Christophe was treated to two more surprises: the shiny, deadly looking gun and the lovely curve of scarlet-covered breasts and hips.

The Scarlet Ninja was a woman—and she was armed.

“Who in the bloody hell are you and where did you come from?” Fiona glared at the intruder, her gaze traveling up and up as he slowly stood, holding his hands out in front of him. He was a few inches over six feet of tall, dark, and sinfully gorgeous, and he had no right to be here in the middle of her scouting trip, never mind those astonishingly muscled shoulders and the dark waves of hair framing the most beautiful green eyes, sculpted cheekbones, and deliciously masculine face she had ever seen on a living, breathing man. Her breathing sped up, and her heart, which had already been racing faster than the lead car in the Birmingham Super Prix, thundered so hard it surely would pound its way out of her chest any moment.

She was a thief, standing in the middle of one of the most priceless collections of gems in the entire world, and yet she wasn’t tempted to look anywhere but at him.

Oh, yes. He was trouble.

Trouble blinked; long, dark lashes closing over emerald-green eyes so gorgeous they had to be illegal in most of Europe. Then he threw back his head and laughed, and shivers traced a delicate pattern down her spine. His deep, rich laugh was dark chocolate and champagne and silk sheets all presented in one wickedly mouthwatering package.

Oh, damn, it had been far too long since she’d had sex.

Her watch beeped. Glancing down, she saw that she had twelve minutes. Declan had hacked into the security cameras and put them on a circular repeating pattern or something equally complex and brilliant, but he’d warned her a dozen times that she had exactly fifteen minutes and not a second more.

She raised the tranq gun and used her best frosty, lady-of-the-manor voice. “I repeat, who in the bloody hell are you?”

“You’re Scottish,” he said, quite unnecessarily.

“Give the man a gold ring. You have ten seconds to tell me who you are and why you’re here before I shoot you.” She raised the gun, hoping the first time she had to shoot a man while looking him in the eyes wouldn’t haunt her dreams for months to come. But needs must and, well, the Siren was waiting, no matter how mouthwateringly delicious this man might be.

“The Scarlet Ninja is a woman. A Scottish woman,” he said, his gaze sweeping over her from head to toe, blistering every inch of skin under her garments, as if the heat in his eyes were a palpable touch.

Of course, the negative here was that he appeared to be a blithering idiot.

I loved Atlantis Betrayed! It is definitely my new favorite in Alyssa Day's Warriors of Poseidon series. The hero is super hot and heroine is more than a match for him!

Lady Fiona is the notorious Scarlet Ninja, a famous thief. And her new target the Siren. The large jewel set in the sword of William the Conquer. Unfortunately, it is locked down under the tight security of the Tower of London . While she is casing the Tower she comes across an unlikely and mysterious man and shoots him leaving the sword for another time. But what she doesn't realize is her foe is a powerful Warrior of Poseidon with powers of his own. He recovers and tracks Fiona confronting her and `persuading' her to joining forces to steal the sword.

Christophe is bored. His latest assignment, to steal the Siren from the Tower of London . He doesn't find it a challenge but his is surprised and aroused by the lovely Scarlet Ninja and when she injures him all he can think of taking his revenge on her delightful body. When he meets her he finds himself spellbound and acting very uncharacteristic! He likes her and actually wants to please her. But soon they find themselves under attack. And both will need each other because another and more dangerous foe wants the sword and intends to use its power...

At first when I read the blurb about a heroine that is a fairy tale writer by day and by night the Scarlet Ninja a renowned thief. I really wondered if this plot would work. And boy did it! This was an outrageously fun book that had some really likeable characters. Fiona is partially Fae and has cool abilities to bend light. She is also smart and sassy! I loved her butler who is a cross between Batman's Alfred and James Bond. And instead of being annoying her younger brother is perky and adds a human dimension to Fiona. Plus there are some interesting and evil Fae and vampires lurking in the story. So this book has everything, including a somewhat grumpy and bored hero who was very charming. The main characters definitely had a chemistry that was a joy to read. They played against each other beautifully.

I have to say this book has really got me looking forward to Alyssa Day's upcoming books. I really, really want to know more about the young warrior Denal who finds himself as a guard to the beautiful Fae Princess Maeve. I hope the author includes more Fae in her future books. They are deliciously evil! The author also sneaks in quite a few scenes with prior characters that faithful readers will enjoy.

This story was fun and even lighthearted. At times I found myself laughing out loud and really getting into the spirit of this exiting and thrilling romp. This is book you will not want to miss!

Warrior and Thief team up

Atlantian warrior Christophe, up for a challenge to relieve the boredom of killing vamps, plans on milking his assignment to retrieve The Siren, another of the gems needed before Atlantis can rise. On a scouting expedition in preparation for stealing the jewel from the Tower of London, Christophe crosses paths and wits and is bested by the notorious Scarlet Ninja - aka Fiona Campbell - who also has plans to acquire the treasure. But when someone else accomplishes the theft ahead of them, the pair must team up to recover the stone before its powers are used to start a war. And while they are at it, Christophe's lovely new partner may be just the one to end Christophe's boredom once and for all.

I really enjoyed the snarky not-a-team-player Christophe, and the chemistry between him and his future mate Fiona is very good. Even better, Fiona was great combination of gentile lady and smart kick butt thief. She was a good match to Christophe and more than able to hold her own against the pushy Atlantian and other supernaturals as well - I especially loved the way Fiona was able to take a no-win confrontation with the shape shifter alphas and rewrite the rules to gain a more acceptable outcome.

I also liked the addition of unseelie Fae as both friend to Fiona and foe to just about everyone to the story. And I thought that Christophe's fellow warrior Denal's new connection to the Fae queen holds promise for when he gets his own book. Also good were Fiona's `family'. I loved Fiona's father surrogate Hopkins and his antagonist relationship with Christophe - I found their verbal sparring quite amusing.

There was a great deal I liked about Atlantis betrayed, and my only nit being that I thought that bad boy Christophe ended up just a bit too redeemed at the end, I think that he needed to be `good' with Fiona but keep his 'attitude' with his comrades.

Still I enjoyed Atlantis Betrayed and look forward to the next book - I think that there are two more jewels left to retrieve and at least two more warriors, Denal and Alaric, to get their stories as well - but from the teaser at the end of the book neither of them will be up next. Instead Day's next story stars vampire Daniel who has played a supporting role in the previous books.

My Favorite so Far

I enjoy the Atlantis series by Alyssa Day and have read all the books to this point, however it was not among my favorite series. More of a secondary series I followed when my favorites where in between installments. After this particular story, I may need to re-evaluate that. I really enjoyed Atlantis Betrayed, more than any of the other books so far in the series.

Christophe had a tortured past which has made him somewhat anti-social, in a snarky, sarcastic, antagonistic sort of way. Fiona also had a tortured past. The difference is that while Christophe held grudges against the world and only reluctantly helped make things better due to his position as a warrior of Poseidon, Fiona took it upon herself to make a difference no matter how she had to go about it. She believes that she can, should, and will make a difference. When the two of them get together, sparks fly almost from the start. One thing I particularly appreciated about Christophe was that although he was scared to death of falling in love and trusting Fiona, he did not fight it. Scared as he was, he accepted what was happening gradually but surely. The fact that Christophe was sexy, funny, and adorably alpha male yet still able curve his caveman instincts in order to respect Fiona's wishes was icing on the cake.

The plot moves very quickly and I highly suggest reading the previous installments of this series in order to understand this story. This is definitely not a stand alone novel. While there are some parts to the story and characters that could have been developed further, those are really minor issues. The book is definitely an entertaining read and if Ms. Day continues the series with more books like this one things are definitely looking up. Don't get me wrong. The other books in the series are good. It's just that there was something about this one that made it stand out. I will keep an eye out for the next installment in the series about the vampire hero Daniel and hope we get Denal's story soon.

About the Author
Ellery Adams has had a lifelong love affair with both stories and food. As a child, she used to make mud pies and eat them. Over the years, she became more adept in the kitchen, and when she's not writing, she loves to don an apron and fill her home with the sweet, buttery scent of baking pies. Ms. Adams has held many jobs, including caterer, retail clerk, car salesperson, teacher, tutor, and tech writer, all while penning poems, children's books, and novels. She writes and creates culinary delights from her home in central Virginia.

Magical and tasty mystery!

Ella Mae LaFaye left her small hometown of Havenwood, Georgia to move to the big city of New York with her husband. But when she found him cheating on her with two women, her small hometown dreams sounded good again.

Ella Mae has always loved baking her sweet and savory pies and now she's decided to drown her sorrows in doing just that. Her Mom and aunts are choosing to support Ella Mae by investing in her Charmed Pie Shoppe. Problems arise when her old time rival, Loralyn, wants to buy the same spot to build a tanning salon. Loralyn, finance has agreed to buy this for her as a wedding present, but he's found murdered with Ella Mae's rolling pin.

Ella Mae needs to prove her innocence, but she also needs to get her pie shop up and running. With amazing help from her Mom and aunts the shop opens. 'Amazing' seems to be magical when it comes to Ella Mae's pies. Does she have special powers? Will she prove her innocence? Can she find a new love? Are the woman in the LaFaye family all a bit special?

This magical cozy is a yummy read for the brain cells!! The descriptions of the pies alone are worth the read---and the bonus recipes are mouth watering too! I really enjoyed the magical aspects of the story. Loved all the 'sister support' too!! Sometimes I do feel food made with love has magical aspects to it.

I'm usually not into magical books that are hard core magic, but i loved the lightness of the magic in this book. Loralyn was fun to hate too! Seems she'll live to flirt her way through more messes in other books. All the characters have become part of my world now, so I'm glad that more magical Charming Pie Shoppe mysteries are part of my future!

A Little Disappointing

I so wanted to love this book. I've had it on my wishlist since the moment Amazon first listed it as an upcoming release and fully expected to love it. I'm a huge fan of the author's other series so I was basing my expectations on that. Unfortunately this book just fell flat for me. I never really got swept away in the book and for me that's a rarity. Instead of staying up way too late because I just couldn't put the book down, it took me twice as long to read as normal. Too much of the same things over and over had me skimming here and there. The plot had potential, just seemed to get crowded out by the scenery and descriptions. The aunts were by far my favorite characters...they were a total hoot. I guess even our favorite authors can write a book, that for whatever reason just don't suit us and that seems to be the case for me with this book.

Fantastic new southern cozy series

Recipe for the perfect Southern cozy: Start with a cast of strong, sassy women; mix in delectable dollops of mystery, magic, mayhem, and mouthwatering descriptions of scrumptious sweet and savory pies; add in a dash of romance. Grab a tall glass of iced cold sweet tea, head out to the sunniest spot in your yard and let Ellery Adam's charming town of Havenwood, Georgia whisk you away to the genteel south.

Women's relationships are a hallmark of great Southern lit (think Fried Green Tomatoes and Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood), and Ella Mae has surrounded herself with a special group of women: her mother, aunts, and special friends. (Her aunt Dee is my favorite with her menagerie of pets, and how I'd love one of her specially crafted with love metal sculptures of dearly departed pets.) I loved the process of Ella Mae discovering her magical powers as she strived to learn more about herself (especially the scene where the uninhibited townsfolk started taking their clothes off!) I also enjoyed the horse racing element to the mystery, and was saddened, but not shocked at the extreme measures greedy owners and breeders will take to win the big bucks, putting their animal's safety and well-being on the back burner.

Any new release by Ellery Adams is cause for celebration in my book, and this first Charmed Pie Shoppe mystery is a winner right out of the starting gate!
