Can't wait till the next one!

Story Rating: 4.50
Character Rating: 5.00

First Thought when Finished: Pecan Pies and Homicides was my favorite in the series so far! The ending is what sealed the deal :)

Story Thoughts: Hands down, this was the best mystery in the series so far. Ella Mae had her hands full with trying to figure out not only a murder but who might also try to torch the secret grove. There were twists, turns, and one thing (with the case) that I didn't see coming. The series story arch moved forward at a really nice pace and gave us a lot of answers about some of the history of the town. It was nice to see Ella accepting who she is more and really getting more confident in herself. I was also thrilled to get more back story (and character development) about the feud between the two families. As you can tell, I really enjoyed this one!

Character Thoughts: I want to visit the Charmed Pie Shoppe and have pie! I think Ellery made the characters shine and not just Ella Mae. I felt we got to know all of the secondary characters more in this story because they all played a big role in protecting the grove. We got little nuggets of information that really made each one of them more individualistic and stars in their own right. Especially as we learned more about the feud between the two families. I am going to admit that I don't dislike a certain someone near as much as I did before Pecan Pies. I loved the introduction of new characters and how they were brought to the community. In fact, is it bad that I hope we get a coffee shop (or maybe a spin off)? I was delighted to learn more about Hugh and can't wait to see how Ella and he progress from here. Ella though was the star and she grew so much in this book. I wanted to hug her, cheer for her, and yes at times kick her hiney (though her BFF did a great job of playing the reader in this book and getting her in line).

Final Thoughts: Can't wait till the next one!

Pecan Pies and Homicides by Ellery Adams

Pecan Pies and Homicides is the third book in Ellery Adams' Charmed Pie Shoppe Mystery series. Fans of the series will be thrilled with Ella Mae's search for a way to free her mother from the Ash tree and in her amateur sleuthing. But it's not only murder afoot this time in Havenwood, but an arsonist as well. Adams has a way with description that is unparalleled in the genre and she does her homework on the magical aspects of this series. If you are looking for a little magic in your confections, this is the series for you!

What I liked:

One of the things I like about this series is Ellery Adams' attention to detail. The magic she writes about in this series is what I would call earth magic. It has a lot to do with the essence of life and that sort of thing. I appreciate the fact that Adams didn't go with a normal type of magic that readers may be over saturated with. The kinds of things she talks about in this series are different and really interesting, my Scottish grandfather would have said this is very old magic. Whatever it is, it makes for a great secondary theme in this mystery series.

Ella Mae and her family have been feuding with the Gaynor family for years and in Pecan Pies and Homicides readers learn a little more about what caused all the trouble. Apart from each other members of both families seem nice and caring but when put in proximity to the other family, all bets are off. I liked the background touches that Adams provides that only move the plot of this book along, but the story arc for the entire series.

Ella Mae and Hugh are slowly becoming more into each other, but it looks like there may be a few stumbling blocks ahead. Ella Mae can't tell him about her magic or she'll lose it and now there is a possibility that Hugh isn't quite normal either. I liked the daily life aspects of this book a lot. The romance between these two has had some ups and downs and I think I like where it's going.

The mystery part of the book was two-fold. First you have an arsonist who tried to burn down a sacred grove. Ella Mae is trying to figure out who it is and if it might happen again, all while looking for a way to free her mother from the ash tree (long story, but if you are a fan of the series you know what I'm talking about). Then you have a murder as well to try to solve. I liked the two-fold approach because it not only allowed the reader to see different aspects of each crime, it also brought in new characters and allowed readers to see old characters in new ways. I certainly didn't have arsonist or killer figured out until near the end of the book.

What I didn't like:

As with any book that employs a paranormal element, the author has to be cautious about letting that element take over. I noticed it a little bit in this one, but then the mystery cranked up and it got better. It was just a little overwhelming in the beginning. Not a major problem with the plot to be sure. This was still an excellent addition to this intriguing series.

Bottom Line:

Pies, magic, murder and arson, that's what this book is about. It's a well written and interesting book that will appeal to those who love mysteries and the paranormal. Ella Mae ain't your average witch. Can't wait to see where Adams takes the gang from Havenwood next.

My Mother, The Tree
By bluesdiva
If you are one who does not wish spells cast upon you, or if you have an aversion to demons residing in the local lake, Havenwood, Ga is not the place for you. It seems about 80 % of the population there, has some kind of magical power.and quite frankly, it's little overwhelming.
In this outing, a whole new slew of displaced "magical people" has descended upon Havenwood since their own enchanted forest in Tennessee has been destroyed. So now there is even more magic to be found around this tiny town. When one of the new folks is brutally murdered, our protagonist, Ella Mae must find out what's going on. More urgent is the matter of her mother who, by choice, has turned herself into a tree. It's long story but fully explained in the previous book, "Peach Pies and Alibies". Ella Mae is running out of time to be able to free her mother from the tree. O brother-does this sound a little out there? It's gotten too much for me. I like paranormal stuff and I don't mind a ghost or two or even a talking skeleton but I'm just a little tired of all the enchantment here. The one character who, I thought from the beginning, was a normal human being turns out to be not quite.
It is a well written book as all of Ellery Adams' books are, but I think I'll stick with some of the other series she writes. This one has become a little over the top for me.
