Holidays can be awesome, but not necessarily in the ways that many of us might consider. Pasricha portrays the value of silly victories, warm moments, and lots of things that can’t be bought, such as drinking with grandma, successfully taking a nap at the in-laws, regifting a present to someone who actually appreciates it, ripping presents open with the gusto of a wild animal, and stealing smoldering cookies straight out of the oven. Even the biggest grinches can’t deny these delightfully digestible anecdotes are truly special. It’s somewhat odd that this book, which also references New Year’s, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, summertime, Halloween, and Thanksgiving, starts with Christmas. No matter. It’s more about special moments such as getting served breakfast in bed on Mother’s Day or catching the ice cream truck. Pasricha does a wonderful job of reminding us that holidays and seasons can hold special delights if we lend enough attention to fully appreciate them. You may remember me from such reviews as The Book of Even More Awesome. Well, having been following Neil Pasricha's awesome movement for some time now, you can imagine how excited I was when I heard that he had a third book coming out - The Book of (Holiday) AWESOME!

Obviously, having got hooked on the feel-good nature of Neil's books in the past (and having set a dangerous precedent of using these books as my "go to gifts" for friends), I knew that I had to pre-order a bunch of copies as soon as it was released. Thanks to the wonders of Amazon's release date delivery, I had a chance to come home from work today to a box of Holiday Awesome - and I'm glad to report that, just like Santa Claus, this book totally delivers!

The book is filled with the wonderful little moments in life that these books are so good at reminding us to celebrate and not take for granted. And they're made just that much sweeter by being focused on some of the most special times of the year. From the wonder you experienced as a childhood of staring into a fire on a cold winter's night, to fake wrapping a present to fool that special someone, to the memories that rush back when you unpack all of your favorite ornaments from years past. Flipping through the entries in this book is like a concentrated rush of holiday cheer, reminding you of all the special moments that this time of year brings with it (that have nothing to do with whether or not you've got a Wii under the christmas tree or not).

Plus, the book isn't just relegated to the cold snowy months. While the first half of the book has the winter holidays as the focus, as the book progresses it has funny little nuggets about the other holidays of the year as well, extending the AWESOME across the calendar.

The gift that keeps on giving!

I am a huge fan of everything awesome (The Book of Awesome, The Book of even more Awesome, The Holiday Book of Awesome, 1000awesomethings.com, the iPhone App of Awesome, The Calendar of Awesome!!) so this review may be a little bias! The day I got my hands on a copy of the original book I was instantly hooked.

There can never be too much Awesome in your life. Each and every time I read an "Awesome thing" my day gets a lighter brighter and my smile gets a little wider - there is even an occasional giggle and other instances when I find myself laughing so hard I can barely catch my breath (Please refer to Awesome thing #137 Laughing when you're at home by yourself and #538 Laughing so hard you start to cry).

I highly recommend this book (and all the other "Awesome Things" created by Neil) to anyone who wants to brighten their life a little bit each and every day! I have no doubt in my mind that the person receiving my Secret Santa gift this year will greatly enjoy their Book of Holiday Awesome this Christmas ;)

Graysmith (Zodiac) mixes film history, true crime, and autobiography with disappointing results in this scattered exploration of the woman behind one of cinema's most memorable scenes. Though his goal is ostensibly to track down Marli Renfro—Janet Leigh's body double in Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film Psycho—who some believed was raped and murdered in the 1980s, Graysmith takes too long getting there. Detailing the intricate Psycho shoot, which was painstakingly designed by Hitchcock in order to both shock the audience and pass the rigorous censor test, Graysmith introduces readers to Renfro, a gorgeous redhead who came to the film via modeling, some of it nude. Interspersed with Renfro's experiences as an actress, Playboy model, and dancer is an account of the life and crimes of Henry Sonny Busch Jr., a Norman Bates–look-alike in L.A. who strangled three women and had a penchant for Psycho. Graysmith, comparing his own growing obsession with Renfro to the plot of the 1944 film Laura (where the detective also falls for a dead woman after seeing her photograph), is determined to discover what really happened to her. As sloppy as Hitchcock's shower scene was precise, Graysmith's jumbled account never finds its footing, despite the fascinating subject matter. (Feb.)

You don't need me to tell you

I agree 100% with the negative reviews. To call this book disjointed and unorganized would be misleading. It isn't even up to those standards. I honestly can say that I have no idea what the author was aiming for, because he jumps from one thing to another with no apparent logic. Calling this mess a waste of time is too kind, because it doesn't deserve any classification whatsoever, really. Judging this book by it's cover is a compliment, because the title is the only thing that is interesting.

generally jumbled, annoying read, although with some fascinating nuggets

The confusing setup for this book goes like this: a nude model was used as a body double for Janet Leigh in the famous PSYCHO shower scene. Another woman (Myra Davis) served as Leigh's stand-in (for lighting setups, etc; never on-camera) during the filmi...ng. The double (Marli Renfro) had a brief, curious career as a pinup model, casino showgirl, Playboy club bunny and general bon vivant in the early '60s before retiring into obscurity. The stand-in was tragically murdered in 1988, but news reports confusingly identified her as the body double. Meanwhile, a serial killer that may have had a PSYCHO-style "mother complex" murdered a bunch of older women in Los Angeles in 1960. This is not the same man that killed Myra Davis in 1988.

These are several interesting storylines. No doubt the author thought he could weave them in and out and make a great cohesive story which touched on each one. Sadly, it doesn't really work at all. Things are not aided by the choice to hop back and forth between stories throughout the book, a very disconcerting conceit. By far, the most interesting aspect of the book is the deconstruction of the historic shower scene: whenever Graysmith is discussing the issues and tidbits surrounding it and other aspects of the PSYCHO shoot, the book is riveting. We learn how Hitchcock cleverly acquired the story rights on the cheap, how he financed the film himself, how he utilized his TV show's technical crew, how he re-invented himself to compete with the likes of Roger Corman and William Castle. But mostly, the nuts and bolts of the week-long filming of the shower scene are dissected, analyzed, laid bare. I was really surprised at the level of creative planning and logistics (both artistic and techincal) that the scene required. This was not just another girl-being-murdered scene in a fright flick; it was designed to be a work of art, a show-stopper. And it certainly is: Graysmith argues it's the single most famous scene in movie history, and that may be true indeed.

We learn of the Hollywood tradition of not crediting the body double in a scene like this: doing so would diminish Leigh's performance to some, and would rob the scene of much of its illicit thrill (a Hollywood star in the nude right before our eyes!). As such, Marli Renfro remained under-the-radar despite persistent rumors about her part in the film. The book goes into great detail about Renfro's life, but more importantly, her lifestyle. The author seems genuinely fascinated by the beautiful red-haired pinup girl, and gushes breathlessly about her many jet-setting and glamorous adventures. We are told of interviews and parties with Hugh Hefner, horseback rides with Steve McQueen, dates with wiseguys and hitmen. Also, great care goes into describing her many nude modeling sessions and her supreme poise and professionalism during same. Frankly, it's a little embarassing, and these parts of the book seem more like a schoolboy's mash note than a dispassionate history.

Oh, and then we have the out-of-leftfield inclusion of the 1960 serial killer. It's written like a thriller novel--we are privvy to the killer's thoughts and conversations as if we are inside his head. The man apparently had a mother fixation like Norman Bates, and the murders coincided with the LA premiere of PSYCHO. A separate book about these murders might have been interesting, but it would have to be a fictionalized account I guess, in order to provide such first-person details ... but then what's the point? This part of the book's "narrative" was totally uninteresting to me, and seemed really out of place in the book.

Oh, and ALSO, the part about the stand-in being murdered and identified as the body double .... that happens about 5 pages before the book ends. So all along we are reading about Renfro's life story as if she is dead, to find out she is alive and well .... I think this is what happened to the author personally as he researched the book, so he makes us suffer the same "twist" ending he had in real life. I guess that's clever, but it really annoyed me, made me feel as if I had been tricked. Are you telling a history or a shock story? Furthermore, are you relying on interviews and archived facts or just "imagining" what a killer is thinking? The book wants to have it both ways.

I think a book about the shower scene itself -- that touched on Renfro's intriguing lifestyle, and touched on the mistaken identity between Davis/Renfro -- would have been a much more interesting read (for me, anyway). As it is, THE GIRL IN ALFRED HITCHCOCK'S SHOWER is a generally jumbled, annoying read, although with some fascinating nuggets strewn here and there to save it from being a total loss. 2 1/2 out of 5 stars.

I really would like to write a glowing review of this book, but I am just not able to do so. The concept of this book, even with the payoff at the end, is a fairly solid premise. The execution of the premise makes me wonder how the book found a willing publisher.

The story basically centers around Marli Renfro, the body double in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. It is implied that something tragic happened to her, particularly as the chronology evolves. Parallel to Renfro and the film, the story of convicted killer Sonny Busch is told. His killing frenzy is apparently exacerbated by the film. The connection between the two stories is somewhat thin, then disappears. Mixed in to these stories is the history of "Nudie Cutie" films, Francis Ford Copola, and the early history of Playboy. Straying so far into these areas tells me that the author did not collect enough information to write a quality book. Going a step further, the author inserts himself into the story with his obsession with Marli Renfro. Thus, the book is part true crime, part Hollywood history, and part memior. It seems the story has an identity crisis.

The book is categorized as true crime so it obviously involves murder as stated earlier in the review. Interesting 1950's Hollywood facts are also included in the book. Between the scattered plot and the twist at the end, it is easy to understand why there are so many negative reviews for this book.

Much More Than A Cozy Mystery Story

This is the second book in the Amish Mystery Series. The series started out strong, engaging the reader with well drawn characters and a lovely setting. Assaulted Pretzel continues with more character development and insight into Claire's past and her hoped for future.

Much more than a cozy murder mystery, multiple storylines give the reader investigation, family dynamics and just the right amount of romance. Claire and her friends appear as real people with real problems, heartaches and joy. Bradford flawlessly conveys what a widow endures when her husband is murdered - doubts, remorse and overwhelming grief. There are no one dimensional characters in this book or lack of emotions. The world of Heavenly is wonderfully described and you are activley invested in all the characters.

The actual murder investigation is woven seemlessly into Claire's everyday life. Her personal life does not take a backseat to the investigation. The ramifications of the murder effect the entire town, but the Amish toy makers Daniel & Issac suffer the worse. We get a glimpse into Amish culture, their rules and the problems facing them. The interactions between the English and the Amish is enlightening and creates another layer to several relationships. The actual murderer is in no way obvious, but the reasons when revealed ring true.

I was sad when I finished, the true sign of a great book. Waiting impatiently for book 3.

This author also write the Southern Sewing Circle Mystery Series as Elizabeth Lynn Casey. Another wonderful cozy series.

A wonderful edition to this terrific series

I so enjoyed "Hearse and Buggy" that I pre-ordered "Assaulted Pretzel" and I'm so glad that I did. There is no sophomore slump with this second book in the series. Once again Laura Bradford has captured the town of Heavenly in an almost lyrical way. The characterizations of the mainstay inhabitants grows richer and I, for one, am totally invested in the characters. Admittedly, the murder was not who I thought it would be but it all made sense. Thankfully, the romantic rivals for Claire's affection seems to be resolved once and for all. I'm glad. I've grown weary of the romantic rivalry scenario that seems to be pervasive among many of the cozy mysteries I read. In conclusion, I really, really enjoy this series and can't wait for the next book!

A "Heavenly" book!

In this second book in the Amish mystery series, another murder has occurred in the quiet peaceful Amish community of Heavenly, Pennsylvania. Clare, a relatively new resident and shop owner, wants to help find the killer so her adopted home can return to normal. Her sleuthing garners her a variety of suspects, but the twist at the end surprised me.

Clare also tries to straighten out her romantic feeling for a former Amish man, Jakob who returns to the community as a police detective and Benjamin, an Amish widower. Both of these men care for Clare, but their caring creates problems for not only Clare but for themselves. Her Aunt Diane is a wonderful character who originally invites Clare to live in Heavenly. Diane is a great listener and advisor who helps Clare understand the Amish ways and helps Clare understand her own feelings.

The Amish life is portrayed very realistically and adds to the flavor of the story. The setting is so well described, and the town of Heavely seems just that!

I throughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

I anxiously await book three!

About the Author
A 1967 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Dick Couch served with the Navy Underwater Demolition and SEAL Teams. He led one of the only successful POW rescue operations of the Vietnam War, while a platoon leader with SEAL Team One in 1970.
 
On release from active duty in 1972, he joined the Central Intelligence Agency, where he served as a Maritime Operations Officer. He retired from the Naval Reserve in 1997 with the rank of captain. The author of numerous books and articles on military special operations, he serves as a consultant and keynote speaker on issues of tactical ethics and moral battlefield conduct.

Excellent book, excellent author, terrible editor

I really enjoy Dick Couch's writing. He has a really easy-to-read style that isn't as dumbed down as C.B. Colby back in the day. This book is extremely informative and fun to read. It gives a really human insight into the Rangers that people don't often get. Even (especially?) Soldiers often elevate these guys to godlike status, and makes them seem completely aloof and inaccessible. Dick Couch makes them accessible, without dragging them down to a level of not being special anymore, because the Rangers are the best on the planet at what they do, make no mistake about that.

The only complaint I have about the book was the lack of editing. I want to mark up every error in the book and send it back to the publisher. The first 100 pages are rife with so many factual errors that they distract from the fine content of the book. It's not anything big that would make you think Couch made anything up, they are a large number of simple errors like saying that Darby did not live to see D-Day, when he was in fact in Washington with the War Department and didn't die until 1945 (perhaps the meaning was Darby wasn't in Europe to see D-Day?), and that the British were defeating Francis Marion in South Carolina in 1881.

I don't want to discredit the book, I really enjoyed it, I just hope the second printing shows more attention to detail befitting the Rangers. Mr. Couch, if you need a better editor, I would be happy to work for you!

Good Enough, I Suppose

Dick Couch is a retired United States Navy SEAL. He has written on various special operations forces, focusing mainly on his own SEAL community, coming from a position of a veteran who served in Vietnam and has watched the various entities that make up this world evolve. He teaches at the Naval Academy, and therefore has a certain view and viewpoint of those who aspire to be officers in one of our larger military branches.

First, allow me to address what Sua Sponte is not. It is not a discussion, or even description, of what the 75th Ranger Regiment is doing in the war on terrorism. It is not a biography of an Army unit that has been incredibly busy over the last 11 years. This operational tempo is touched on, but never fully explored. There is no discussion of the night raids that make up such a large part of the war in Afghanistan now, and in which the Regiment plays a huge part. There is no mention of the Ranger QRF that accompanied NAVSPECWARDEVGRU into Pakistan to accomplish the hit on UBL. Pat Tillman, the most famous Ranger of this current period of warfare is not mentioned at all. General Stanley McChrystal, a former commander of 3rd Ranger Battalion and the whole Regiment, does not make the pages. In the same way that his previous books such as "The Sheriff of Ramadi" avoid the mention of anything controversial or outside a very straight-line narrative, this one sticks to its guns.

Sua Sponte does a phenomenal job of explaining how Ranger Assessment and Selection Program works. There is some wave top covering of the Fort Benning, GA basic training program, along with jump school, and the army's infantry training program. Then it goes into RASP and its two components. Eventually there is some mention of Ranger School, and it is clear that he has interviewed senior leadership of both the 75th Ranger Regiment as well as the Ranger Training Brigade from the knowledge woven into the book. But do not go into this expecting to learn something existential about the Rangers, the training, or the way of life. This book toes the company line.

It is probably valuable to compare Sua Sponte to "Making The Corps" by Thomas Ricks. Both describe an entry level training program, but Ricks has no buy-in to the community. Sua Sponte is a book makes clear where the flaws in the program are (the Ranger swimming test is administered early, and eliminates most minorities from the training pipeline, as an example), but does not offer any discussion of these issues, or offer solutions to any policy makers or interested readers. Everybody interviewed is motivated, inspired, and a shining example of a great American warrior. At one point one of the RASP Cadre admonishes the others to "pressure on, profanity down, and keep it impersonal." That's this book, in a nutshell.

A reader who is not familiar at all with military training will come away impressed by what young Rangers do, and how much they work to earn the right to wear the tan berets, something that nobody should diminish. But the story is impersonal, clearly stilted, and not told at a personal, skin-to-skin level. The conversations are stilted, the responses clearly either canned, or not given freely to a retired O6 officer. The story moves on to a Ranger battalion and company preparing for deployment, which involves plenty of time in the field, plenty of shooting, plenty of the things that make young men want to join up. Even here the story fails to excite, as it is simply a telling of the occurrence without passion. It is clear that Mr. Couch is impressed by his young observants, but also that he understands that his is how special operations works. Hard work, continuously executed, creates hard core fighters. He is just not able to bridge the gap. There is discussion of a Ranger company after it returns, and you will find nuggets throughout on how hard the war is on Ranger families, those that make the ultimate sacrifice, and brief paragraphs about the families left behind when these men go to war.

In the end, this book tells the story of how a modern Ranger is forged, as it says on the cover. It does not tell the story of the 75th Ranger Regiment at war, a story in desperate need of telling. Couch has access, both through his previous writings, his title as a Navy Captain, and as a member of the Special Operations Tribe. He understands classified material and how to handle secrets. I think this frequently makes him to cautious, and his stories are too cheerleader like. If you are looking for a book that tells you how to make a Ranger, this is it. If you are looking for a warm look at america's elite light infantry in home port, this is it. If you want a discussion of an elite raiding force in modern warfare, this is not it.

"Sua Sponte: The Forging of a Modern American Ranger" by Dick Couch is an excellent and lively tribute to the modern Rangers of the elite 75th Ranger Regiment. I severed in the Regiment prior 9/11 and moved onto other Special Operations units. I can tell you what I learned in the Rangers set the foundation of my special operations background. This book clearly sets the record straight on what it takes to be in the Regiment and what life is like in the unit. If you ever wanted to really know about this unit this book is for you. The author briefly covers the ranger history and then delves into the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP), which was Ranger Indoctrination Program (RIP) back in the day. I can tell you from when I served in the 75th they have fine-tuned the selection process down to fine science with almost eleven years of straight combat under their belt.

RASP is designed to weed out those who do not truly have the physical or mental capabilities to serve in the 75th Ranger Regiment. The training curriculum was specifically designed to "smoke" the trainees through endless punishment via constant physical training. In the second week of RASP, the class is sent to "Cole Range" a remote training area of Fort Benning. It is designed to test the individual to their breaking point both physically and mentally; trainees sleep on average 4 hours total throughout Cole Range as they spend their nights doing tedious tasks such as the "hitting the wood line" for being incapable of meeting the given time hacks. Although training such as patrolling and land navigation is taught at Cole Range, the main focus is to mentally and physically break down the individual. For classes held in the winter; it is not uncommon for 20%-40% of the starting class to quit during the first night of Cole Range. The remainder of the training familiarizes the trainees with the regimental weapon systems and first aid procedures known as Ranger First Responder (RFR), explosive breaching, air assault operations, close quarters battle and a host of other skill-sets.

Also, as mentioned in other reviews the book has some historical errors and a couple of minor typos. However, I feel these errors do not distract from the book and will only be viewed as a glaring error to readers with extensive military historical knowledge. However one thing that bothers me is that the book has no contents page, not sure if it was a print error or it was purposely omitted. Overall, The book is an enjoyable read and nicely formatted. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to journey into the ranks of the Rangers and to the casual reader looking to shed some light on their understanding of this elite unit. RLTW!

Great Marine WWII Combat Memoir

This book was pretty great. I've been reading Pacific WWII memoirs for years, my Uncle served in the Pacific (he was a Seabee) and I'd put this one in the same league as "With the Old Breed" which I thought set the standard for Pacific Marines in WWII.

Chuck does a great job of pulling you into the story, it's like you're bought back to 1940s America, and the stories of boot camp and training (which I normally find redundant and often tedious) are instead very entertaining. Chuck shares pranks that will make you wonder how he wasn't killed by one of the old combat veterans in his unit (one actually tries) and you find yourself so engrossed in the characters that you want to flip to the end to see who survives the war because you can't imagine these wonderful men not making it.

The book starts to get serious when Chuck is designated to a machine gun squad and he meets his idol John Basilone. John becomes Chuck's sergeant and mentor and when they get separated (John's transferred to another unit) they reunite again, of all places, on the beaches of Iwo Jima where they lead the first breakout from the beach. Chuck's memories of John aren't from hearsay or observation; they're first hand experiences he shares of his time with one of America's greatest heroes.

The battle of Iwo isn't described by Chuck in casualty numbers or generalities; it's a second by second play back by a man who must have it permanently inscribed in his memory. I won't say more about Iwo but after reading it I went to bed that night wondering how any human can live through what they did that day. Watching their buddies get cut down, one, by one, by one. You keep expecting it to stop, but it just keeps going.

I give thanks to Chuck Tatum for reliving the war and writing this book. He says he's telling the story to honor his buddies and I think this book is an incredible tribute to them. I'm going to buy another copy (mine is kindle) and donate it to our local high school and I found some autographed copies through Valor Studios (a legit looking site I found that sells signed ones) and will get one to pass down to my kids. Men like Chuck Tatum are a dying breed and maybe if America's youth are exposed more to books like this one, rather then video games, I'll have better faith in my country's future.

Great realistic WWII book

This a great read. It gave an in depth background especially on boot camp and some intricacies on the Marine Corps tradition that I haven't read about in the many other similar books.

One minor quibble I have-and it is minor-is that references to John Basilone are pretty sparse considering that John is in the title; however, every mention made is reverent and rightly so. It was difficult to read about John's death but the circumstances just prior makes a person wonder in awe about John's incredible leadership.

It's hard for this book to measure up to Eugene Sledge's brutally realistic memoir which I just finished; indeed, that book set the benchmark. But this memoir gives a really in depth personal look at combat on Iwo at least as much as it is possible to describe it. The wonderful relationships between his platoon mates and him is described eloquently and it is so hard to read about some of their combat deaths.

I recommend this book highly. It reinforces the magnificent tradition of the Marine Corps and how these men did their duty to the utmost during horrible circumstances. I read a lot of military history because it shows men at their best and their love for the man fighting beside them.

Incredible True Story

I have read a lot of books that are WW II books, some of them fictitious, and some of them true stories, however this book came alive for me. It was well told, and somehow the horror of it was true. I have read recently that eight out of ten high school students, when asked about Iwo Jim's didn't know where it is, which I find to be extremely sad. Somewhere along the line, the story of WW II has been denigrated by the bleeding heart liberals of this country to "bully" status, which is truly a pity for the horrors these men faced and overcame so that these same people have the right to protest what these brave men did.

It's not often a crime novel offers such a smorgasbord of oddball elements, including autopsy advice, methods of combating tree blight, the use of spiders in sadomasochist torture and couples covering the sexual and psychological waterfronts. There's even a little nasty fun at the expense of television psychoanalysts. With geographic locations switching slightly faster than the speed of sound, it's to Reading's credit that she smoothes out the ultra rumpled excesses of Cornwell's mind-boggling plot and takes full advantage of the yarn's narrator-friendly present tense. Having given voice to several earlier books in the series, she's got the main characters down cold. Her Dr. Kay Scarpetta is all snarky professional reserve and personal insecurity. Self-loathing lesbian niece Lucy, sounds properly troublesome and troubled, with an added catch in the throat due to a secret she's keeping. Pete Marino, the bullet-headed, gym rat security chief of the Lucy-originated National Forensic Academy, sounds so gruff and aggressive, he should be kept on a chain leash. And Scarpetta's inamorato, Benton Wesley, whose study of mass murderers' brain patterns gives the novel its title, is, as his name suggests, the very model of a dry, annoyingly passive-aggressive personality. The joke here-intended or not-is that the novel's protagonists are almost as mentally or emotionally disturbed as its homicidal villains. Cornwell seems to have grown weary of the lot of them. But there's still a flicker of life left and Reading has the skill to make the most of it.

Stunned and Disappointed

It is hard to believe that Patricia Cornwell, who wrote the first ten books in the Scarpetta series, is the author of Predator The beautiful sentence structure and descriptions have morphed into something with a repetitive Dick and Jane feel.

"He kicks and kicks with his big boots until his legs are too tired to kick anymore. He slams and slams her with the stock of the shotgun until his arms are too tired to slam anymore." What???

One of the great things in the earlier books was how Cornwell introduced all the scientific knowledge. It was done in an artful way that made sense. This reads more like a technical manual where the info is just dumped on the reader. There is a multi-page description on how to make gelatin shooting blocks.

A number of the behaviors don't make sense. Lucy, the computer genius, apparently never updates her passwords for a year. Like the previous book, Lucy involves Benton in another secret that is kept from Kay. Once again this further damages Benton's relationship with Kay. At one point Benton and Kay have a long discussion about splitting up and Kay starts planning on taking her belongings. A few chapters later they are suddenly discussing what to have for lunch and everything is okay.

Marino is an incredible jerk to everyone, to the point where Kay considers firing him. He behaves in a degrading fashion to a local female cop who forgives him the minute he can spit out a coherent sentence. The characters are two dimensional, there are only the most remote forms of relationships, and there are a plethora of secondary villains with little resolution. The plot twists defy logic and there are enough loose threads to knit a sweater.

Scarpetta herself says it best:

"“I’m getting tired of coincidences. There seem to have been a lot of them lately." I totally agree!

Just keep on getting worse

Kay Scarpetta, Lucy, Marino, and Benton are back and as miserable as ever. Without any transition or explanation about what has passed since the last book, Lucy now owns a Forensic Academy where she employs Kay and Marino and where they teach others the tricks of their trade. Lucy is also upset about the death of a man we have never heard of before and it seems that somehow, because of him, she is sick. Kay and Benton's relationship is still on the rocks and they act as though it is a tedious chore to even try to make it work. Marino is miserable and depressed and not getting along at all with Kay. Haven't heard anything about a bad guy or a mystery yet? That's because the book centers almost completely around the foursome's pathetic lives with a mystery as a sidenote. The mystery isn't even very good and in the end is concluded in a very disappointing way.

Cornwell has completely lost her edge. It's not coming back. These books continue to get worse and worse. After being a huge fan of the series for so long it is sad for me to say goodbye, but buying these books is truly a waste of money. The characters continue to be miserable and not do anything to try to get better. The mysteries that the books used to be based around now play second fiddle to the characters pathetic interactions. The plot leaves many questions unanswered, but sadly, I don't really need them answered to leave this book behind.

not one sympathetic character in this book

There is not one character in this story with whom I have any sympathy. What happened to Pete Marino, who, in my mind, was always a good guy who worked together with Kay almost seamlessly. Now, he is a miserable, mean SOB. Perhaps it's time to retire Pete. Also, Lucy, the niece - what a piece of shabby work. Can she ever get her head out of herself and actually relate to the real world? Then there is Kay hereslf, becoming so angry with Benton about not telling her what Lucy's current problem was. Well, guess what Kay, since you are not only a doctor, but also a lawyer, where do you think the law gives ANYONE the right to tell another about a third person's possible medical condition, especially when the third person, in this case, Lucy, has specifically told Benton not to tell Kay. The story was very disjointed and hard to follow. Plus, Cornwell seemed to be clumsily tryint to misdirect the reader as to who "HOG" really is. Guess what, it didn't work.

I have become increasing reluctant to buy another in the Scarpetta series. I felt the end of this book was rushed and - really - nothing was resolved, except that the murderer was caught - if course.

If you buy this book, you have been warned. I am donating my copy to my local library, so if you live near Seattle, feel free to get a copy for free to read. Don't pay out good money.

Marcus is generally loathed: he's petty, inept, has a secret garbage-truck phobia and harbors an intense hatred for Scarpetta. Meanwhile, Scarpetta's niece Lucy, owner of a fabulously successful private-eye firm, has her own troubles trying to sort out who attempted to kill her friend Henri (short for Henrietta), who's now under psychiatric treatment by Scarpetta's lover in Aspen, Benton Wesley. Lurking in the background is Edgar Allan Pogue, a nutcase who has a thing for dead bodies and a grudge against Scarpetta. It's her job, as always, to connect all the puzzling forensic dots and identify the killer in time to save herself and her loved ones. She does this, mostly, but leaves the reader to puzzle out a few salient points on his or her own. Cumbersome backstory slows the action, but in general the old Scarpetta comes through, at least in the main, and this will be enough to reassure her many fans and carry them over until her next appearance. Against advice from her niece Lucy, Kay Scarpetta answers a request to return to the Richmond medical examiner's office, the same office from which she was fired, to help with the sensitive case of a dead teen. When she and Pete Marino arrive, they find the new medical examiner to be a vituperative, uncooperative martinet and the office that Kay ran so efficiently in chaos. Two murders, oddly linked, demand their attention. In the meantime, Lucy, still unsettled despite her success with the Last Precinct investigative agency, is having personal problems (there's been an attack on her housemate), which strangely enough find her treading the same path as her aunt Kay. Traces of the smart, dynamic, yet vulnerable Scarpetta of the early novels are in evidence here, and Cornwell has better control of her plot and characters than in her last few efforts, faltering only occasionally when psychobabble weighs things down. The mystery is intriguing, there's plenty of forensic detail, and the ending, though perhaps too abrupt, opens the way for Scarpetta and her associates to proceed in any direction that calls to them. Okay, Enough of the Dumb Back Stories!

Each time I pick up a new Scarpetta novel, I am filled with hope that Patricia Cornwell will return to the style of the early novels that made me fall in love with the series. Sadly, this novel, like so many of the recent ones, is another big disappointment.

I'm not even going to bother trying to give a plot summary because it's hardly worth the effort. Yes, there's a disturbing murder of a 14-year-old girl, but it hardly counts for anything in this book. Instead we have the usual Lucy angst because her lover, Henri (Henrietta), was attacked and won't talk to her. We also have Scarpetta angst because Benton Wesley faked his death for years and didn't tell her. Wesley has angst as well because he's still keeping secrets from Scarpetta and Lucy. And why are Wesley and Lucy keeping the fact that Henri was attacked such a big secret from Scarpetta? Why don't these people just TALK to each other? Since they keep getting interrupted on the phone, then maybe they could try emailing each other.

Oh yeah, there's also Marino angst, with his long time crush on Scarpetta and a really bizarre "rough sex" scene involving him and the mother of the victim.

As usual, even though Scarpetta is a respected expert in forensic analysis, the bureaucrats are out to get her. She is summoned to her old ME office in Virginia to work on the case involving the 14-year-old girl and faces overt hostility by Dr. Joel Marcus, her successor. He calls her in to help with the case but doesn't even have the grace to pretend he's happy to have her there. Of course, the office has become a shambles under his direction-- but nobody seems to care that the man hired to replace the brilliant Scarpetta is incompetent.

The book ends abruptly and the reader is left shaking his/her head and asking, "What the heck just happened?" I wish Cornwell would dump Lucy-- she grows more annoying with each book; quit making all her plots revolve around Scarpetta's bizzare little circle of friends/lovers/family members; have Scarpetta and Wesley either work things out or give it up; and give Marino a girlfriend so he can stop salivating over Scarpetta. And while we're at it, let's have the bureaucrats recognize Scarpetta's brilliance and quit fighting her while she does what they hire her to do.

I can't quite give up on this series yet, because the books were just so good in the past. But it's getting harder and harder to keep reading them, and I no longer move them to the top of my reading stack.

A Disappointed Fan

I was a HUGE Cornwell fan for years and recommended her books to EVERYONE. But I am so sad to see what is becoming of this series, and I'm tired of paying these prices only to be disappointed. First, what happened with Benton was downright cruel. In Cornwell's latest installment, Scarpetta and Marino seemed tired and washed out; the two made ME tired. And Lucy...what is with Lucy? I don't even like her character! The plots starts off on an interesting note, but it just went downhill from there. Marino wasn't so bad, I've always loved him, and the scene where the dead girl's crazy mother bites him and Scarpetta examines him was touching. and then FINALLY she and Benton get together, well, maybe, but not quite sure. Cornwell is far too talented for this, and I long for the days when I could not put the book down. I have not enjoyed her books since "The Last Precinct," and, should I ever buy another book, I will not spend the kind of money I spent on this one.

Of course Kay Scarpetta cannot go "home" again

My working hypothesis for the past several Kay Scarpetta Mysteries is that Patricia Cornwell does not really like the character she has created. If there are levels beyond adding insult to injury then Scarpetta gets to explore them. When it turned out that Benton Wesley was not dead that was a stunningly cruel low blow. Until Marino drops dead or one of the whackos Lucy keeps letting into her life kills her or gets her killed that represents the lowest moment of Scarpetta's life, which has been exploring the Marianas trench rather relentlessly. So when I picked up "Trace," the 13th (oh-oh) of the Scarpetta mysteries, my first thought is what wringers is our heroine going through this time?

We know that there are certain things we are going to get when Cornwell writes one of these novels and "Trace" provides them. First, there is going to be some political hack who is out to get Scarpetta who is not going to get his comeuppance. I gave up years ago on this every happening, although time and time again somebody goes gunning for Scarpetta unfairly without ever having to pay a price. This time it is Dr. Joel Marcus, the idiot who was eventually hired as the chief medical examiner of Virginia to replace our heroine. Apparently having created the best ME office in the continental United States they decided to find the least qualified person to run it. But by the time Marcus gets to gleefully accuse the great Kay Scarpetta of incompetence he is disappearing quickly in her review mirror. Add to this that going back to her old stomping grounds in Richmond is no where close to being a happy homecoming either.

Second, Lucy is once again involved with somebody with whom she should not be involved. For a smart girl it is amazing how many times Lucy enacts this pattern of self-destruction. Of course it must be rooted in the deep dark psychological turmoil created by her relationships with an inadequate mother, a perfectionist aunt, a volatile Dutch uncle, and all the horrible things that have happened to her in the previous dozen books. But since she has to be doing this on purpose, the big surprise is that this constant attempt to destroy her life is pretty much the only thing at which Lucy has ever failed.

Third, whatever cases Scarpetta, Lucy, Marino and Benton are working on they are related and the true target is not the poor dead person but one of them. They can call each other on the phone and repeatedly tell each other than they cannot say anything about the cases they are working on, but these people are just wasting precious time because somebody is always after one (or more) of them in the small, small world that Cornwell has created.

Of course, if they were not so consumed by their respective cases that are really just one big case then they would have to deal with the own interpersonal problems (Warning: rant coming). After all, if the love of your life pretends he is dead for several years and you were basically the only one of the good guys or bad guys that did not know it then there are a few things to talk over, in Aspen or elsewhere. But every since that big revelation Scarpetta has been studiously ignoring the elephant in the room.

The only refuge for both Scarpetta and the reader is when we get into the detailed forensics work that allowed Cornwell to make her reputation in this genre. Keep in mind that she had taken the "Quincy M.E." idea to the limit before television and popular culture caught up with the C.S.I. franchise. Given how all the characters are spinning their psychological wheels in these recent novels my suspicion is that Cornwell comes up with nice little trick of forensic medicine and then figures out how the aforementioned requisite elements are going to be sandwiches around the examinations of corpses and crime scenes.

For a while Cornwell's fans have come to the consensus that she is going through the motions with these recent Scarpetta novels. At least Scarpetta makes a meal again this time around, albeit in the book's first chapter. Given how good they were in the beginning their growing disappointment and outrage over these recent novels explains why so many of them are abandoning the series. However, I am still interested in the author's desire to heap as much grief on Scarpetta's life as possible. Even if these books are becoming one of literature's longest running sick jokes, there has to be a punch line at the end of all this strum und drang.
