Okay read

The first two books in this series were really good. I like the setting of New Orleans as Brady does a good job with sense of place. This third one I didn't get that place feeling,the story could have been set anywhere.
As for the mystery part, that was well done; I never guessed who did it but, and occasionally there is a But . . . . . the whole premise of how Rita got sucked into this in the first place felt off to me.
Improbable?
Unlikely?
Highly. I hope the next one goes back to a mystery at the bakery or more of the bakery characters in the story line.

Arsenic And Old Cake is the third book in A Piece Of Cake Mystery series by Jacklyn Brady.
With the economy being in turmoil, Zydeco Cakes is experiencing a downturn in sales for its high end cakes. Rita Lucero and her office manager, Edie, are going over the financials trying to decide on a course of action to keep the bakery afloat when a couple of friends stop by. Gabriel is bartender at the Dizzy Duke and Old Dog Leg is a member of the band that plays there. Old Dog Leg is blind and has just received a letter from someone claiming to be his brother, a brother he hasn't seen in 40 years. Old Dog would like for Rita and Gabriel to be "his eyes" and check him out. The only problem is that the brother is staying at the Love Nest B & B. and Old Dog feels the best way to find out if it is his brother is for them to pretend to be newlyweds. Against her better judgement Rita agrees to take on this undertaking. Then that evening, after the toasting to the "newlyweds", Rita hears a blood curdling scream and sees one of the proprietors standing over what appears to be a dead body. he is dead and the person who is supposedly Old Dog's brother has gone missing.
The "regulars" who live at the Love Nest are a truly hilarious bunch of folks. They all have a connection to the time 40 years ago when the brother disappeared. So Rita and Gabriel set out to find out what that connection is and help the brother prove his innocence.
A very good addition to an appetizing series.

A delectable addition to the series

In the third book in this series, the gang of Zydeco Cakes are back for another mystery.
The economy is turning south, and the folks at Zydeco Cakes are finding that sales are at an all-time low. Rita and Edie, her office manager, are trying to decide what to do when a new problem lands in their lap. Their friends, Gabriel and Old Dog Leg, ask them to investigate a letter that Old Dog Leg has received. Someone is claiming to be his long lost brother, a brother he hasn't seen in 40 years. Old Dog Leg would like them to be his eyes at the B&B, where his supposed brother is staying, and see if this guy is genuine.
Agreeing to go undercover at the B&B, all they expect to unravel is whether Monroe is Old Dog Leg's long-lost brother. Soon they have a murder on their hands, and it looks like Monroe could be the murderer!
The Piece of Cake Mystery series is such a fun series, with it's delicious cakes, zany characters and unputdownable mysteries. Arsenic and Old Cake wrapped me up in a delectable mystery right from the first page. With a cast of unsavoury characters at the B&B I was having a hard time trying to figure out who the murderer was. Jacklyn Brady kept me on my toes, and I didn't manage to solve the mystery before Rita.
I really like this series, and Arsenic and Old Cake was a great addition to an already fabulous series. I highly recommend the latest instalment to fans of the series and if you enjoy a good culinary cozy mystery, I recommend trying the series from the first book, A Sheetcake Named Desire.
