Compiling Anthology Stories in One Volumn is a Treat
By Baroness of Topaz
Inasmuch as it's very hard to find the older Carpathian novellas that were published in various anthologies with several other authors, it's a nice treat to find these two stories, Dark Hunger and Dark Secret, in one volume with Darkest at Dawn.

It's not the author's decision to re-release the novellas. That decision solely lies with the publisher who owns the publishing rights to the story. Best selling authors like Ms. Feehan change publishers over time and have little input in how or when a previous publisher decides market their earlier works.

I usually dislike anthologies because I generally buy the paperback for the one story or author and usually bypass the other stories featured in the book.

In Darkest at Dawn, it's much more convenient to read short stories within a series back to back without having to switch from book to book. Being able to read the novellas together helps see a broader picture wherein the story flows better and shows the connection with the overall plotline and characters.

Reviewers deliberately giving this book low ratings, based not upon the context of the stories but because the buyer failed to use due diligence before buying, does a great disservice to the quality of these wonderful, previously-published, stories.

It would have been awesome to have all three Carpathian short stories...Dark Dream, Dark Hunger, and Dark Descent, compiled and re-released together in one book but in this matter, publishers rule.

Did no one read the synopsis?
By S. Dees
Both titles included in this collection were very good when they were originally released. I had this on my list to purchase because it is Christine Feehan, but as I read the synopsis of the book, it was pretty easy to determine that these are reprints, so I did not purchase. When reviewing books, don't base your review on your own mistake rather than the author's.

Imperative to read review/description of book first!
By loverofbooks
This is a repeat of two stories already available! Most reviewers have made the mistake of not looking the description over, and thus unfairly rated the book. Dark Hunger and Dark Secrets are put together. I do think the cover shouldn't have a new title, which would throw anyone off into thinking this is the newest in Christine Feehan's carpathian series, but unfortunately the publishing company did this. In any case, in Dark Hunger we meet Riordan De La Cruz and Juliette. For a full review of their story, visit Dark Hunger. The full length story is Dark Secrets. We meet Rafael De La Cruz and Colby Jenson. Visit Dark Secrets for a complete review.

If by chance you've already purchased these stories, call Kindle Support and request your refund.

Another Good Benni Harper Story
By Books and Chocolate
Benni Harper, curator of San Celina's folk art museum, is busy coordinating the first ever Memory Festival, a celebration of memories of loved ones through quilts, crafts, scrapbooks, photographs, oral history and other tributes. The fair promises to be a wonderful event but is soon overshadowed when a local policeman is wounded, the target of a sniper who has a vendetta against cops.

Benni is concerned for her police-chief husband, Gabe, who may also be a target and is showing signs of post-traumatic stress disorder through violent nightmares about his time in Vietnam. As if this isn't enough, a mysterious woman moves to San Celina who shows more than a passing interest in Gabe, leading Benni to wonder if this is yet another woman from his past.

The Benni Harper series is my favorite in the amateur female sleuth genre. Fowler has a way of telling the story that makes the characters seem real and I like how she brings out Benni's faith in God without this being Christian fiction. By that I mean it is simply a natural part of who the character is without being a primary focus of the story.

With the theme of celebrating the memories of loved ones, Fowler did a good job of letting the reader share Benni's feelings as the character remembered when her mother died and writes, "Losing your mother when you are young changes you; the ground beneath your feet is never quite firm enough. You never completely trust happiness again." And in this description as Benni recalls the death of her first husband, Jack: "His death was no longer a painful throb but more of a soft pinch to my heart. Though you never believe it in those first horrific moments of loss, life does keep moving forward."

Spider Web was a good story and kept my interest throughout. I usually have an idea who the culprit is before the end but this time I was kept guessing. I also didn't anticipate the part the mysterious woman would play in this and future stories. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.

Excellent story telling as usual
By Sara Berger
Spider Web by Earlene Fowler
This latest Benni and Gabe Ortiz story is a fascinating one. In the course of collecting stories for memory books, Benni hears some wonderful and touching recollections of life during World War II. The story of Winnie the nurse in the Philippines was difficult to put down.
There is a sniper in town, targeting police officers, and this has sent Gabe into the nightmares of Post Traumatic Stress from his service in Viet Nam. Benni tries to help him herself, but he denies needing or wanting help.
Meanwhile, in a lighter frame, Grandma Dove and her sister Garnet are trying to `help' Benni's father, Ben, with his love life. He doesn't want their help and is trying to escape from their ministrations, all the while complaining to Benni.
A new woman has come to town and is asking Benni a lot of personal questions. Who is she and what does she want? Is she a former lover of Gabe's? Benni doesn't trust her and has friends look into her background.
All of this is happening during the run-up-to and excitement of The Memory Festival. There were booths with quilts, others with pottery, books, scrapbooks, photography, and other ways to remember occasions and loved ones. As Chair of the Festival, Benni is constantly on the go and meeting with folks. She is determined to not chair this festival again (an I know what she means).
I heartily recommend this book published in hardcover by Berkley Prime Crime, ISBN: 978-0-425-24098-4.

fun amusing cozy
By A Customer
In San Celina, California, a sniper fires at the driver's side window of a parked police car near the town courthouse. Nobody was hurt as the vehicle was empty at the time of the shooting. Town police chief Gabe Ortiz leads the inquiry wondering what the motive could be.

Gabe's wife Benni Harper is busy with her myriad of jobs as a museum curator, rancher and caring for her beloved older relatives while also preparing for the first annual Memory Festival where she and the Coffin Star Quilt Guild will show their Graveyard Quilt for the first time in public. At the same time Benni scrambles with not enough hours in the day, a woman comes to town seeking a retirement home. However, instead she meets with Benni to discuss Gabe.

The latest Harper whodunit (see State Fair) is a fun amusing cozy due to the antics of the lead couple's eccentric family and friends. The sniper mystery is cleverly set up with readers, Benni and Gabe wondering about the motive; while the female stranger in town adds quite a wallop to the mix. This is a strong entry as even the most powerful people sometimes need help.

From Booklist
Evil is still slowly spilling out of Gair’s well, creating havoc in Neroche. But Miach, Archmage of Neroche, is determined to close the well once and for all. Finding—stealing—the right spell isn’t easy, but what proves even more difficult for Miach is the discovery that the only one who can successfully work the spell of closure is Shieldmaiden Morgan of Melksham: Gair’s daughter and Miach’s true love. If Miach allows Morgan to complete the spell, it could save his kingdom, but it could also mean losing the woman he loves. Kurland brings her exquisitely crafted Nine Kingdoms trilogy, which began with Star of the Morning (2006) and continued with The Mage’s Daughter (2008), to a triumphant conclusion. Deftly sifting together love, honor, magic, and danger, Kurland has created a spellbinding, witty, and sweet paranormal romance. --John Charles

Outstanding ending to a powerful story!
By Katie Mc P
First, since some confusion exists regarding the progression of the Nine Kingdom's books, here's a current list (updated Jan '15):

Two Prelude short stories, found in anthologies with other authors:
- The Queen in Winter ("A Whisper of Spring" when Symon, the first king of Neroche, woos and wins Iolaire, princess of Ainneamh)
- To Weave a Web of Magic ("The Tale of Two Swords" where Mehar of Angesand and Gilraehen, --th king of Neroche, fall in love and the legendary sword of Angesand is forged.)

Miach and Morgan's story is told in:
1- Star of the Morning (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 1)
2- The Mage's Daughter (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 2)
3- Princess of the Sword (this book)

Ruith and Sarah's story (which OVERLAPS Miach and Morgan's story in the timeline) is told in:
4- A Tapestry of Spells (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 4)
5- Spellweaver (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 5)
6- Gift of Magic (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 6)

Runach and Aisling's story is being told in:
7- Dreamspinner (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 7)
8- River of Dreams (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 8)
9- Dreamer's Daughter (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 9)

Princess of the Sword is the finale in the first trilogy's amazing story. These three books tell a story that is so exquisitely told -- so powerful and beautiful -- that you just get carried away to the Nine Kingdoms the minute you open the book. The world-building is subtle but masterfully done. The character development is the key to the whole story, for everything hinges on who Miach and Morgan truly are, something which they must both come to understand and accept before they can possibly face what is before them.

Why do I love this book and this series? Well, in addition to the amazing writing, I love the imagery. I love how much beauty is in the tale, in so many ways, and on so many levels. I love how the character of who Miach has always been unfolds along with the character of Morgan and who she is becoming. The bond that they forge is something truly special.

Star of the Morning laid the groundwork for the whole story. It showed you the characters for who they used to be and threw them up against things that shook them to the core of who they thought they were. In this first book, Miach and Morgan started to fall in love... and then we were left hanging.

The Mage's Daughter came out a year ago and instantly became my all-time favorite romance book. The relationship between Miach and Morgan really unfolds in this book, becoming something truly beautiful. We start to see that their relationship is integral to the plot because only together can they defeat the evil that threatens them. We also begin to see that the understanding, support, and refuge they give to each other could not possibly be found anywhere else. By the end of this book, they are a team. Two people who finally understand what they must do together and what they must face to save the Nine Kingdoms. Two people who aren't sure they're equal to the task, but who know that there is no one else who can walk the path that has been laid out for them.

And so Princess of the Sword begins. It's the culmination of the first two and the final confrontation between good and evil. The relationship that Morgan and Miach have forged is now the bond that holds them together. They must find strength in who they really are to stand against the evil that threatens them in new places. And all the while, the kings and queen of old are watching them, for the fate of the Nine Kingdoms rests on their shoulders.

They must find the spells needed to undo what Morgan's father began years before. Morgan must find the strength to succeed where her mother failed. And Miach must prepare himself for his ultimate showdown with Lothar, who is now more powerful than ever.

And only then does Miach realize that he too must face more than he ever dreamed he would be called upon to carry.

A fitting conclusion to an incredibly magical and action packed fantasy series
By Leslie Tramposch
No longer a simple shield maiden, Morgan of Melksham is now aware that she is not only the daughter of Gair - the evil black mage of Ceangail, but also the elven princess, Morghain. She must learn to accept as part of herself the powerful magic she has always abhorred for she now realizes that only she can cap the well of dark magic unleashed by her father's spell. It's a race against time for Lothar, the black mage of Wychweald, will do anything he can to stop her and gain the dark power for himself.

With his brother, the king of Neroche and his queen ensconced in Lothar's dungeon, the fate of the Nine Kingdoms is at stake, and with his heart forever bound to the beautiful warrior, Prince Mochriadhemiach, archmage of Neroche, will do anything within his own considerable powers to protect Morgan.

To uncover the spell of closing, Morgan and Miach would brave peril in unlikely places and obtain aid from unlikely beings. The battle would be won with the help of friends, family, and an incredible array of ancestors but most of all with a pair of enchanted swords and the power of love.

What will become of this pair of unlikely lovers? Join them on the conclusion of their journey which began with STAR OF THE MORNING and continued with THE MAGE'S DAUGHTER. Follow them as they soar the skies, steal into dangerous places to uncover spells, and fight for their lives, their kingdoms and their love. Fate has a plethora of surprises in store for the tragically orphaned duo - Morgan, a woman whose only desire was to wield a sword who instead finds herself a princess with a heritage of frightening magic and Miach, a prince whose heritage is magic but whose fondest wish was to be a simple farmer. Victory will force new responsibilities on the pair that they'd neither expected nor welcomed. Is their love strong enough to face the challenge?

I do hope Ms. Kurland will continue to offer us fantasy fare along with her incredibly popular romance novels. She has a knack for this genre that will have the reader longing to know the fate of numerous secondary characters as well as the rest of the Nine Kingdoms long after PRINCESS OF THE SWORD has been put to bed. Cathar is intriguing, Rigaud needs a good thumping and I imagine a child born to Morgan and Miach would be a right handful, no? Ah well, until then I highly recommend this incredibly magical and action packed fantasy series! ~ reviewed for PNR Reviews

I WANT TO MARRY MIACH

Miach is the true draw to this story... Ladies, the reason we read romance is to find a guy like him and have him brought to life from the page. He is truly a rare find. My only advice to readers of this fantasy series is to NOT start with this book - buy, borrow, steal "Star of the Morning" and "The Mage's Daughter", read them and then get started on this book; otherwise you will be lost as to what is going on (this is not one of those series that rehashes entire sequences for you in order to "catch up"). Although I feel this book, the finale, could have been better, the series itself really astounded me in how well-wrought it was; Lynn Kurland is truly one talented lady. This series is going to be a wonderful addition to my 'favorites' bookshelf. Please keep them coming, Lynn!

Royalty has its privileges, even when you’re thirty-fourth in line to the throne, as Lady Georgiana Rannoch discovers on the glamorous—and dangerous—French Riviera…

Thankfully, Her Majesty the Queen has once again come to my rescue. She is sending me off to Nice with a secret assignment—recover her priceless, stolen snuff box from the disreputable Sir Toby Groper.

Her Majesty’s trust is an honor, but an even greater honor is bestowed upon me in Nice—none other than Coco Chanel herself asks me to model her latest fashion. Unfortunately, things go disastrously wrong on the catwalk and before I can snatch the snuff box, someone’s life is snuffed out in a very dastardly way. With a murderer on the loose—and my dearest Darcy seen in the company of another woman—how’s a girl to find any time to go to the casino?

Rhys Bowen and Jacqueline Winspear in Conversation

Rhys Bowen: Jackie, you and I bonded instantly when we met, and every time we compare notes, it’s like talking with my clone. We’re both British, both expats who live five miles apart in California. We write about female sleuths in the 1930s. We seem to share a similar approach to our writing. We both feel passionately about the things we write about. So let’s start with being British expats. We’ve both lived much of our adult life in America and yet we choose to write about England. Do you think this is a nostalgia for home, or we are more comfortable writing about the place where we grew up? For me, I think it’s a little of both, especially because I choose to write about England in the past. It’s the nostalgia for cream teas, country fetes, a kinder simpler time. And I feel more comfortable being able to get under the skin of my characters, to know how they would think and react, based on my own upbringing. And yet in many ways that time we both write about mirrors what we are going through today--the desperation of a depression, the threat of extremism, the disparity between haves and have nots. It’s interesting to me that so many readers write that they identify strongly with Lady Georgie--when she’s a twenty something royal!

Jacqueline Winspear: I don’t think there’s a nostalgia for home, or for the past as such; however, the fact remains that, although I have lived here in California for over 20 years, I don’t think I would attempt to write a novel with American characters because there is something I could never touch because I was not raised here–-and when that ring of authenticity is broken in a novel, it spoils the story for the reader, so I don’t want to risk it. If anything, my work is inspired by my love of history, and more particularly, the question of what happens to ordinary people in extraordinary times. Fiction is the best way to explore that question; I like to weave the stories of ordinary people into some of the bigger events of the day, like zooming the camera in on a scene. Mystery is a great vehicle for telling such stories, given that arc through chaos to resolution.

Bowen: Do you think its harder or easier to write about a place where you don’t live? I find that when I’m in England I’m a keen observer and I notice things I’d probably take for granted if I lived there. This is especially true about the class system, which is the focus of my Lady Georgie novels. I’m fascinated to find that upper class relatives and friends still see themselves as the ones who matter, still a them and us mentality.

Winspear: I think it’s easier for me to write about Britain from a geographical as well as generational distance. In California, I am not distracted by the Britain of today--there’s a clear delineation--so I am able to write about the past and immerse myself in the essence of that time. The class system is alive and well in Britain; it has changed in some respects, though you can’t change a system entrenched over centuries overnight, and I’m not sure if people would like it if it was changed. Which is great, because it gives you a lot of material for the Lady Georgie novels.

Bowen: We have both chosen to write books set in the 1930s. You approach yours from the grim reality of the lingering aftermath of war, while I focus on the bright young things, the Bertie Woosters, who still act as if nothing has changed in England. I choose to see the funny side of a worrying time, while reminding the reader that Fascism, communism and a second war loom ahead. And I am fascinated by the 1930s, not only because they mirror our time but because they were one of the great turning points of history. Even in England society was poised on a knife edge. Extremists were battling for control. Nazi power was swallowing up Europe and yet the bright young things still lived as if there was no tomorrow.

Winspear: The 1930s offer so much for the writer, with those of one station in society barely affected by the economic woes of Britain at the time, and another living in the most dreadful conditions--yet it was also a great age of house-building in Britain, and you started to see a middle class (as we know it today) emerging. You’ve done well to use humor in your novels, Rhys, because that British sense of humor has brought the country through some terrible times. Though she has many very heart-wrenching memories of the war, some of my mother’s funniest stories are of things people said to buoy each other along during the Blitz.

Bowen: Do you ever get letters saying that it was unbelievable to have a female sleuth at that time, when women were largely confined to the home? I get them even more about my Molly Murphy books, that take place in the early 1900s. But even then women were doing extraordinary things--traveling around the world in 74 days, going to the North Pole, and becoming detectives in the NYPD. By the thirties I’m well aware when I’m writing that women were doing amazing things--Amy Johnson was the first person to fly solo from England to Australia, in an open cockpit plane that was literally held together with paper and string.

Winspear: I am more likely to get those sorts of letters from American readers. The experiences of women between the wars were quite different in America, for an assortment of reasons. In fact, the women of Britain who came through the Great War had more in common with the women in America’s south after the Civil War, when women--many of whom were widowed, or would never marry--were left to fend for themselves, running family farms etc. In Britain, women gained an independence during the war that they were not about to give up--though there are definitely gray areas--and they could please themselves, to a certain extent. If they wanted to wear trousers, they could, because who was going to stop them? Women were moving into public life as never before, with a very visible independence--though they had to be responsible for their financial security, which your Lady Georgie knows only too well!!

Bowen: When we compared notes about our writing experience the other day, were you as amazed as I was to find that we work in exactly the same way? We both start a book knowing very little and we work in flat out panic mode for the first fifty pages, convinced that this book will be our first abysmal failure and nobody will read us again. Then by page 50 the story seems to develop a life of its own, doesn’t it? I’m always amazed when characters say things I never expected or the story goes in a direction I never foresaw.

Winspear: I felt quite relieved to know that you have those same fears when you first start out. Yes, the initial 50 pages are terrifying, and I am usually convinced that I will never be able to write another book ever again and that the truth will finally be out! But at some point you “lock” into the story, and it starts going along at a good clip, and if you are interested in your story and excited by it, it soon gathers momentum. But I remember you telling me that when you wrote your first Lady Georgie novel, the opportunity to write something funny really inspired you. There’s a terrific energy in humor, and in creating memorable funny scenes, and I admire you for having created such a delightful character while remaining true to the time.

Rhys Bowen writes the humorous Royal Spyness Mysteries (Naughty in Nice, September, 2011), as well as the Molly Murphy series, (Bless the Bride, March, 2011).

Jacqueline Winspear is the creator of the acclaimed Maisie Dobbs series.

Amazon.com Review
T. Jefferson Parker and Robert Crais: Author One-on-One

In this Amazon exclusive, we brought together blockbuster authors T. Jefferson Parker and Robert Crais and asked them to interview each other.

T. Jefferson Parker is one of only three writers to be awarded the Edgar Award for Best Novel more than once and the bestselling author of numerous novels, including Iron River. Parker lives with his family in Southern California.

Read on to see T. Jefferson Parker's questions for Robert Crais, or turn the tables to see what Crais asked Parker.

Parker: You’ve got a new novel coming out in January of 2011. I haven’t read it yet, so can you tell me a bit about it?

Crais: It's a Joe Pike novel. Wasn't supposed to be, so I was taken by surprise, but that's the way Pike is. I planned to follow my last book, The First Rule, with an Elvis Cole novel, but I saw Pike meet a woman in Venice, California, a few moments after Pike saved her uncle from a robbery. Ideas for books come to me that way--I'll see an image. The way Pike looked at her, I knew right away I had to follow their story. So it's a love story, but not your usual love story--it's a Joe Pike love story. As the Kirkus review said, "Prepare the body bags."

Parker: Did you have any surprises as you wrote the book?

Crais: A character named Daniel. Daniel is a hit man who is after the woman Pike is falling for. He is not your typical hit man. Daniel is very strange dude, and the creepiest character I've ever created. When I wrote his first scene, I sat back, and said, whoa, where did this guy come from?

Parker: You write terrific heroes and terrific villains. How do you get inside their heads, learn their methods and tricks?

Crais: The answer would scare you. Really.

Parker: Can you describe a typical work day?

Crais: It's pretty boring. I get up, go for a hike or work out because I like to get the exercise out of the way, then I sit down to work. The work requires discipline because there are so many distractions. Though, honestly, I can't think of a better way to spend my time than hanging out with Joe Pike and Elvis Cole and even strange and dangerous characters like Daniel.

Parker: Okay, when all the work is done (is it ever?) what do you do for plain-old, flat-out fun?

Crais: Anything outside. Hiking, scuba diving, flying. As a writer, I spend most of my time inside, staring at my computer. When the work is finished, I want OUT. It's like being paroled.

From Bookmarks Magazine
There’s no doubt that Elvis Cole is a winning character. But critics agreed that Joe Pike, who first abandoned his role as second fiddle to Cole in The Watchman, is a worthy main protagonist in his own right. Stoic, cool, self-possessed, and relentless, Pike not only complements his partner but gives the series greater depth and flavor. Most reviewers felt that The Sentry, like previous novels in the series, has a confident plot, fast-paced action, an insider’s view of a multifaceted Los Angeles, and enough suspense to keep turning the pages. Only a couple faulted the plot and some contrived villains. Though it’s best to start at the beginning of the series, The Sentry is a good place to get to know Pike better, as well as an excellent entry in the series.

From Booklist
It’s a routine Southern California day when former cop and sometime mercenary Joe Pike intervenes to break up the gang shakedown of a sandwich shop. The shop is run by Dru Rayne and her uncle, Wilson, two refugees from Katrina starting a new life. The chemistry between Pike and Dru is immediate, prompting him to keep an eye on the store; the gang leader, Venice Trece, will surely return to deliver revenge. But as Pike and his sidekick, private detective Elvis Cole, soon learn, nothing about Dru and Wilson adds up. Even as he’s negotiating a truce with the duplicitous leader of the gang, Pike learns that Dru is likely not the innocent she seems. The latest Pike novel is a testosterone-fueled caper with tough guys doing hard things to bad people, but it doesn’t pack the emotional wallop of Crais’ best work. High-Demand Backstory: Crais’ last Joe Pike novel reached number two on the New York Times best-seller list; longtime fans may find this one not quite up to the author’s high standards, but the demand will still be there. --Wes Lukowsky

More Pike Bad-A**ery, Crais brings the tension!
By Don In Fremont
If you're interested in tracking the evolution of an author, try reading an early Elvis Cole novel, (Lullaby Town is amazing) and then move directly to The Sentry. It's pretty staggering.

The confidence, complexity and power of Crais' narrative has increased by leaps and bounds over the years. If this seems obvious, try doing the same for, say, James Patterson or Stuart Woods. You'll need to check the publication dates to to determine chronology.

The literary heft Crais and his peers (Connelly, Lehane, Pelecanos, Vachss, etc.) have brought to the Crime Thriller Genre is powerful.

Specifically to our purposes here, Crais has moved from jokey, Chandleresque, L.A.valentines to searing tales of honor and betrayal, with rich characters and genuine consequences. Both formats are highly entertaining, and while we may miss the former (and even hope, one day, for a return visit) we must appreciate the power of the latter.

The Sentry once again explores the psyche of Crais' "other" genius creation, Joe Pike. We find Pike in the midst of a mundane task--auto maintenence. Events before his eyes force his action, because Pike is above all other things, a man of honor, and can't let such things as the threat of crime pass. He inserts himself into the situation (the honor thing again), pulling himself into a years-old trail of crime and violence.

But let's move back a bit.

Crais immediately builds a sense of dread, via a flashback to New Orleans, and a nightmare from Elvis. As longtime readers are well aware, Elvis has become something of a tortured soul lately, with some very dark events in his recent times. So the stage is well-set for what's about to happen to Joe, as he enters the world of Wilson Fisk and Dru Rayne, proprieters of a take-out deli and apparent victims of a street-gang shakedown.

Elvis is recruited, police are confronted, FBI agents are suspected.

And then, things get hairy. Crais brings Daniel into the mix, a hit man who is, quite simply, the creepiest dude he's yet created, and that's saying something. Daniel provides the random menace ratcheting things up to yet another level. Characters.

Very few authors are as skilled at setting the scene and then letting loose with action as Crais. He's still not afraid, to use his own vernacular, to "stack bodies like cordwood", and does so with a seamlessness never gratuitous. Largely because we know his characters so well, and the world they inhabit. Consequences.

As Pike gets sucked into the swirl of Wilson and Dru's troubles, he of course becomes emotionally and romantically vested. Dru Rayne is a damsel in distress, and Joe is nothing if not a knight. And, as you can imagine, little is what it seems on the surface.

Crais keeps the cast of characters limited, but it's really nice to see Lucy Chenier play a significant part of the doings, because we love how she and Elvis relate. They are Crais' Big Romance, and we know he's not done with them.

His followers need no influence from here to know this is a must-read. Those new to Crais' world, take comfort--in The Sentry, he has created a great jumping-on point to begin your addiction. By the time he puts out his next, you'll be caught up!

Just know this....The Sentry is intense, and emotional. Events here will have lasting impact, we're certain, throughout future books. And the end? Well, bring a hankie, that's all we're saying.

Sigh - now I have to wait a year for the next one...
By Luanne Ollivier
Robert Crais is firmly planted on my list of favourite authors. He has written some great stand alone novels, but it is the recurring characters of Elvis Cole (self proclaimed World's Greatest Detective) and his partner Joe Pike that I can't get enough of.

"Cole was a licensed private investigator Pike met back in the day when Pike still worked the badge. Not the likeliest of pairings, Pike being so quiet and remote, Cole being one of those people who thought he was funny, but they were more alike then most people knew."

The Sentry opens with a prologue featuring a truly creepy killer in New Orleans in 2005. Fast forward to present day in L.A. Joe Pike is just filling up his jeep with gas and the tires with air when he notices two gang bangers heading into a small sandwich shop. Instinct sends him across the street in time to stop the beating the two are giving the shopkeeper. But that simple good Samaritan acts leads to a whole lot more...gang wars, drug cartels, a deranged assasin and....a woman. Who has her own secrets...

"If Pike had not stopped for air, he would not have seen the men or crossed the street. He would not have met the woman he was about to meet. Nothing that was about to happen would have happened. But Pike had stopped. And now the worst was coming."

Oh, how's that for great foreshadowing! And the plot Crais has crafted absolutely delivers. Page turning, riveting, non stop action. But those of us who have come to love these characters have been waiting for Crais to reveal a little more of the enigma that is Joe Pike. In The Sentry, we get a glimpse behind Pike's ever present sunglasses into what makes him tick. The relationship with Elvis is explored in more depth as well.

What is the appeal of Joe Pike? Well, he's fearless with a strong moral compass that he can't help but follow. It doesn't hurt that he's strong, attractive and sexy. But he's everything you wouldn't expect as well - he's a vegetarian who practices yoga. Just a great character that I can't get enough of.

The Sentry kept me turning pages non stop. Robert Crais is one of the best thriller/crime writers out there. Fans of the Jack Reacher books would enjoy this series.

Don't be concerned, Joe Pike is standing sentry.
By michael a. draper
There is something about the noble character Joe Pike. His courageousness endears him to the reader. Pike is an ex-mercenary, ex-Los Angeles Police Officer and a man who cares for the less fortunate or abused.

As this excellent story unfolds, Joe is at a gas station when he sees two men swagger into a sandwich shop. Their body language tells Joe that the men are out to do something malicious.

What I like about this character is that Joe doesn't hesitate or worry aobut what will happen to him. He enters the shop to see what's transpiring. The two men are beating the shop owner and show no sign of letting up. Joe takes out one of the attackers and the other runs away.

The police arrest the attacker who Joe took care of but later that night, someone threw a can of paint throught the shop window.

The owner's niece, Dru Rayne, asks Joe to help. Joe learns that the gang is trying to shake down the store owner for protection money. Joe approaches that gang leader and obtains the man's assurance that the hostilities toward the store owner will desist.

Joe believes that he has removed the threat and he and Dru enjoy a coffee break and visit. Dru tells him about her past and shows him a photo of her daughter. It seems as if this could be the start of a romantic attachment.

The next night, violence escallates. Some enters the store and creates havoc and a sign is painted on the wall, "I am here."

The story continues at a fast pace. Violence and suspense mount as Joe, the authorities and others search for Dru and her uncle. There are plot twists and surprises as the the reader continues. We don't know how Joe will be able to save Dru and complications change the direction of the story in a realistic manner.

I found myself totally drawn to this story and now know what the meaning of a white knuckle story is. I believe that this will be one of the best books of the year.

At the Book and Author Festival, which is sponsored by the Novel Idea Literary Agency, Lila expects to discover some talented new authors, but what she finds instead is the body of an editor to whom she bears an eerie resemblance.

Trouble is, the editor’s death isn’t the only literary murder taking place. Soon a blossoming author is also killed, and Lila has a gut feeling that the two murders are linked. Now she must hunt down the dark figure who killed these women—and to her surprise, she just might find the clues hidden in a manuscript…

From Booklist
Lila is settling into her new job as a literary agent and preparing to take her first live pitches at a book-and-author festival in Inspiration Valley, North Carolina. At the festival, she meets an editor who looks just like her. When her new friend is killed at the event, Lila feels compelled to find answers. Shortly thereafter, an author is killed in her home, and while the crimes seem unrelated, two literary murders in one small town strike Lila as too much of coincidence. In between reading queries and trying to sell manuscripts, Lila looks for a connection between the murders. Meanwhile, she is also trying to get closer to lawman boyfriend Sean and to support her son, Trey, as he struggles with the life he chose on a co-op. The humorous commentary on the publishing business, along with a strong subplot about Trey, makes this second in the Novel Ideas series (following Buried in a Book, 2012) a layered and enjoyable read. --Amy Alessio

Review
Praise for Buried in a Book:

“An entertaining thriller.” —Genre Go Round Reviews

“Will appeal to anyone who loves reading, especially anyone who loves discovering a new author.”—The Mystery Reader

"A charming new protagonist." —Mystery Scene
“Cheer up, there's no middle-age malaise for Lila. This cozy debut excels at describing bucolic North Carolina. Think Kate Carlisle for her intergenerational ensemble style or Mark de Castrique's series for regional Tar Heel flavor.” —Library Journal

About the Author
Lucy Arlington is an avid reader, cook, and gardener. If she had her way, she'd divide her time between preparing delectables in her kitchen, traveling the globe on her scooter, and sitting in a comfortable chair with a cup of coffee and a paperback until her legs cramped. Lucy is devoted to her husband and children - especially when they ply her with chocolate and gift cards to bookstores.

These characters are superb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By Lori Caswell/Dollycas
You have heard it said that all of us has a twin somewhere out there. What would you do if you came face to face with yours? and then they end up murdered! at an event you have helped organize!!

That's what happens to Lila Wilkens in this second installment of the Novel Idea Mysteries. She has helped organize the Book and Author Festival and she was hoping to discover some talented new authors but she never imagined there would be one dead body and then another. Lila finds herself hunting down another killer and the clues that bring everything together are found in a very familiar place for this new literary agent. Can she catch the culprit before she is written out of the story?

There is so much to love about this story!

A behind the scenes glimpse at book publishing from the agents point of view set in an enchanting place. Inspiration Valley, North Carolina - sounds like a perfect escape for me. I would never want to come back. Lila's job would delight me as well.

The author has her hands full because she is not only writing the plot and sub-plots, she also has to come up with snippets of manuscripts and proposals for stories so that Lila can do her job. She does this with a precision that makes them all blend together and flow seamlessly for the reader. A lot happens in this story but it happens so naturally that before you know it you are on the last page and sad to have the story end.

The characters are superb and Lila's new hire could prove to very interesting in the next editions. The rest of the agents at Novel Idea Literary are starting to gel. Lila's son Trey's path is changing. Lila is getting settled in her cottage after a little moving day drama and her relationship with Sean, the policeman, is moving forward even as he wishes she would just stay out of his cases.

I am excited for the next story, Books, Cooks and Crooks to be released in December. I am sure Lila will find "in the soup" again and I will devour every word.

One of my favorite cozy series!
By Cozy Reader
Lila Wilkins and the literary agents at Novel Idea Literary Agents are sponsoring the Book and Author Festival and are excited to bring authors and agents to their sweet town of Inspiration Valley. However along with discovering some new talents Lila discovers the dead body of Melissa Plume, a editor, and shortly after the body of up-and-coming author is discovered.

With these two murders bringing a dark cloud over the Festival, Lila is determined to put her sleuthing skills to work and uncover the killer. Meanwhile Lila's son, Trey, is trying to uncover a mystery surrounding the co-op, where he lives.

90% of the books I read are cozy mysteries, so I have a habit of falling in love with all these idyllic villages all the time. Inspiration Valley is one of my all-time cozy villages and the first book in this series (Buried in a Book) was "one of the best debut cozy mysteries I've read in a long time".

In picking up the second book in the series, I was interested to see if the author could bring the same kind of reading delight in me, and I'm proud to say she did. Every Trick in the Book is, if it's possible, better than Buried in a Book.

I loved being back in the town of bookish charm, especially Catcher in the Rye - the only cafe I know that they call your order by giving you the name of a fictional character! The murder mystery kept me guessing, and I liked how there was the added mystery about what was happening with Trey at the co-op.

Every Trick in the Book left me with a feeling of having read another fantastic cozy mystery and absolutely wanting more of this series. I can't wait for the next book in the series, which is due for release in December, 2013.

Getting better!
By HokieChick
I think this is a much better book than the first one in the series. The wackadoo characters at the literary agency are toned down a lot. The author handles the double plot line well. What's going on at the commune isn't hard to figure out, but that's okay. The spooky bad guy plot line is complex enough to be interesting. The relationship between Lila and Sean is developing in a grown-up way.

This series has possibilities and it's growing on me. When a third book appears, I'll read it.

It's a high profile case for Spenser, but the Hollywood secrets he uncovers are sordidly unsavory- and not just those of the accused...

Thank You, Mr. Parker
By Tom S.
The 39th Spenser mystery, SIXKILL, is a good one. Our hero investigates a rape/murder case on a Boston film location, and the suspect is the star of the movie, a monstrously spoiled matinee idol named Jumbo Nelson. Jumbo's outrageous antics always create headlines, not to mention headaches for his employers (sound familiar?). Spenser also gets to know Jumbo's bodyguard, Zeb Sixkill, an interesting young man who soon bonds with our hero. By the time they get to the bottom of the mystery, we've learned a lot about the Hollywood studio system, modern-day celebrity, and our own fascination with all things famous and/or notorious. And we get a lot of wisecracks from Spenser, whose observations are always hilarious.

As much as SIXKILL entertained me, it also made me a little sad. We lost Robert B. Parker last year, and this is his last completed Spenser novel. Last week his publishers announced that his detectives, including Spenser, will continue in stories written by other authors. I hope those books are half as good as Parker's. I've been reading this series all my life, and Spenser, Hawk, and Susan are almost like family. It takes a great artist to create fictional people who can seem so real, and I'm grateful for all the wonderful books he gave us. He will be missed.

Is this the end?
By Don In Fremont
A lot of stuff happens in Sixkill. It's a fairly action-packed and standard chapter of clearly the greatest series in the history of the genre. And it's also impossible, at this point, to talk about without the context of the author's passing early last year.

Sixkill is described on the flap as "the last Spenser novel completed by Robert B. Parker". A reasonable mind could take that to mean there will be more, perhaps, and that it will completed by someone else. Amazon is already taking pre-orders on a Jesse Stone novel written by the guy that does the Selleck TV-movies. So clearly there are plans. But, well, you know. Not the same.(UPDATED 10/4/11--Ace Atkins has been hired to continue the Spenser Series)

Point being, we should take no finality poignance from the events in Sixkill, as it was clearly not meant to provide any. But poignant is exactly what Sixkill becomes. Its' point is redemption/renewal and it's made in classic Parker style, going back to Early Autumn in more than one way in telling the story of one Zebulon Sixkill.

Z, as he comes to be called, is a Cree Indian bodyguard that Spenser puts a beat-down on while commencing the novel's case: the death of a young girl in Z's client's hotel room. Spenser is brought into the case by Capt. Martin Quirk, whom you've met.

Quirk is pretty sure that one Jumbo Nelson, Hollywood Miscreant/Icon, is being railroaded for murder, so he asks Spens to sniff around and see what stinks. Enter Rita Fiore, who happens to be defending Jumbo, and the stage is set for what Parker did better than just about anyone.

After Z gets canned by Jumbo for getting whupped, he consults Spenser, who agrees to help train him as a mechanism to among other things, get his help solving the case. Parker inserts episodes from Z's early years as Z and Spenser start training at Henry Cimoli's gym, among other locations. Of course, it's all about Z finding himself. And in Zebulon Sixkill, Parker creates a fascinating character, walled-off like a supermax prison. The fun in watching Spenser, with help from Susan Silverman, of course, re-introduce Z with his real self carries its own thrills.

There's plenty of regular thrills here as well. Parker stages a couple of great fist-fights and brings in some other new creepy dudes as well. Lots of cameos by the dangerous types who have helped Spens out in the past....except for, well, Hawk. Yeah, he's still in East Somewhere, so folks looking for those two hamming it up will have to look elsewhere. (Try A Catskill Eagle.) The last act moves really fast, with a gut-wrenching final showdown that's among Parker's best.

With Sixkill, Parker provides another solid chapter in the saga. Better than some, worse than others. No earth-shattering changes, and lots of Spenser/Susan navel-gazing. But it still feels great to read.

We miss him already.

A melancholy experience
By Whitehairedguy
Happily got this book downloaded as soon as it was available. While I did enjoy the story, I could not rid myself of the sadness of knowing that Mr. Parker's last Spenser novel left us wanting one more adventure with Hawk. It seemed apparent to me that Sixkill was written to become a continuing character for future novels. As other have mentioned, there were visits from many of the familiar friends (Tony Marcus and T Bop and Junior, Victor Del Rio, Chollo, Bobby Horse, along with Lt Samuelson and Cpt Quirk) but I doubt that this is the book that Mr. Parker would have wanted as his final chapter. As so many have said in the past, it is a sad good bye to all of the characters we loved like family, particularly knowing that Spenser's last two cases were accomplished without benefit of Hawk by his side.

When an anonymous food critic blasts several local restaurants- including Aunt Pat's-Lulu Taylor and her customers are biting mad, especially when they learn that Eppie Currian is the pen name of their friend Evelyn's cheating boyfriend. When "Eppie" gets his own fatal review, the list of suspects is longer than the list of specials at the best BBQ place in Memphis.

A frolicking, fun murder!
By Hart Johnson
Lulu, sixty-something owner of Aunt Pat's Restaurant on Beale Street in Memphis is surrounded by family and a quirky, fun set of regulars.

Evelyn, one of the Graces (code for docents of Graceland), has a new beau, or rather an old beau... she is seeing an ex-husband who seems to rub a lot of people the wrong way. When it is learned that Adam is not only smarmy, greedy, and philandering, but the anonymous pen behind some scathing restaurant critiques, there are some people out for blood... literally...

But who literally literally got blood and who just figuratively got blood? There is a long list of suspects... people who lost jobs, people who lost business, people who were being blackmailed, people cheated upon... oh, no... there is no shortage of who might have wanted Adam dead... But who killed him? Lulu takes on the case to help her friend Evelyn, who looks a little guilty at first... but it seems nearly everyone on the list is someone she knows...

This was a really fun read--twisty and funny and I felt like I was there. I strongly recommend it to Cozy lovers.

A PERFECTLY SAUCED MYSTERY
By Lori Caswell/Dollycas
An anonymous food critic is blasting the local Memphis restaurants with horrible reviews, some restaurants have even gone out of business because of the scathing remarks. Aunt Pat's BBQ has not even avoided the wrath of this critic who hides behind the name Eppie Curian (one with fine taste).

When the true identity of the critic is revealed to be Evelyn's cheating boyfriend, and daily visitor to Aunt Pat's, the restaurant owners and patrons are hotter than any BBQ grill. They want revenge and someone delivers him his own fatal review. The list of suspects is vast, including an fuming restaurant owner, two ex-wives and even someone from Aunt Pat's BBQ Restaurant.

Lulu finds herself on a mission to make sure the fire is put under the right culprit and contain her loved ones grilling to the kitchen.

I LOVED IT!!!!!

Aunt Pat's is a family run restaurant located in heart of Memphis on Beale Street. It is known for it's fine Southern cooking and each visit there is a delight. I love not only the food, (Recipes are in the back of the book.) But the characters and the mystery too.

I really enjoyed Derrick coming out of his shell a bit and the way the whole group cared so much to snoop in on his date.

There are parts of this book when I found myself laughing out loud. The characters are true friends to help each other, spunky enough to keep everyone on their toes and their compassion resonates clearly to all.

This book has the perfect amount of seasoning and sauce to tempt everyone's taste buds. A mystery to be savored with a glass of sweet tea and a little peach cobbler.

A Spicy & Hot Murder Mystery
By Mason Canyon
Aunt Pat's Barbecue Restaurant in the heart of Memphis (Tenn.) feels a bit of a hit when an anonymous food critic gives it a bad review. Famous for its ribs and spicy cornbread, Aunt Pat's takes the bad press much better than another restaurant that closes its doors after a bad review.

Lulu Taylor, owner of Aunt Pat's, is more worried about one of her close friends and loyal customers, Evelyn. It seems Evelyn is blinded by the love of her former husband who has cheating ways and always looking for money.

When it's learned that Evelyn's ex (Adam) is the anonymous food critic, things heat up hotter than the Fourth of July. Before long Adam is found dead and the list of suspects begins to grow. Was it his ex-soon-to-be again wife, was it his soon-to-be ex-wife, one of the restaurant owners he blasted in a review, or just a loyal restaurant customer upset over his take on the delicious food?

When a second person turns up dead, the situation gets as sticky as the sauce on Aunt Pat's lip-smackin BBQ ribs. As Lulu tries to sort through the list of suspects, she gets a little too close to the killer. Meanwhile, the gang pulls together to help out one of their own with a most unusual wedding at Graceland.

Author Riley Adams has created a group of characters that will have you laughing, crying and shaking your head. If you live in the South, her take on Southern charm will remind you why you love it so. This is a story about family, friendship, loyalty, and Southern charm, not to mention murder, mystery, mayhem and intrigue.

FINGER LICKIN' DEAD is the second installment in the Memphis BBQ Mystery series, but is a stand alone book. An added bonus is several of the delicious recipes are included in the back of the book.

Once you pick up FINGER LICKIN' DEAD, you won't be able to put it down until you find out whodunit and how the wedding turned out.
