Sixty Miles of Border: An American Lawman Battles Drugs on the Mexican Border, by Terry Kirkpatrick

The border between the United States and Mexico is a no-man’s land. Drugs, guns, and human beings are the cargo of choice in a multi-billion dollar illegal empire dominated by powerful cartels, murderous street gangs, and corrupt government officials.
Against them stand the Special Agents of the United States Customs Service—men and women who fight to uphold the law and protect the U.S. on both sides of the border.

Terry Kirkpatrick worked one of the toughest jobs in America: a U.S. Customs agent on the border between Arizona and Mexico. He’s seen it all and done more for over twenty years in a job that many officers quit before they make it six months.

These are the gritty and graphic true stories of Terry and his fellow “Border Rats” as they patrol America’s modern badlands, where bullets are currency and blood is taken as payment. From the inhuman conditions people suffer under to get onto American soil, to working with blatantly crooked military leaders, to some of the most insane and unbelievable situations ever survived, readers will experience the chaos that has engulfed the U.S. border in the words of a man who has been there.

60 Miles of Border sheds an unsparing light into the life of customs agents, their dealings on the border, the effect on their daily lives—and an unsparing look at one of the most hotly debated and controversial topics in modern America.

New Perspective on Mexico
By Lynda J
Love Mexico but had no idea what all when on there. I love to visit Mexico but always thought that all the drug business did not involve me. Now I realize that it does involve everyone that lives in the US. When will we wise up and grow up. Sure made me think about everything I thought I knew.

Tells it like it is...(or maybe was)...
By James Denny
Terry Kirkpatrick's "Sixty Miles of Border" is about what it takes (took) to try to stop smuggling on the Arizona-Mexico border over a twenty-year time-span, the last years of which were about ten years ago. The "Sixty Miles" he is refers to is the border segment between Nogales, AZ and Douglas, AZ. Much of the action occurs between Nogales, AZ and Nogales, MX or between Douglas, AZ and Agua Pieta, MX.

Kirkpatrick's focus is primarily on drug smuggling: marijuana and cocaine, although there is some mention of illegal immigration and non-drug smuggling. For a variety of reasons (which will become clear to the reader), this segment has become one of the busiest smuggling sectors on the entire Mexican-U.S. border.

Kirpatrick's style of writing is choppy and episodic. At times, his thread is difficult to follow. Nevertheless, at the heart of his narrative, his stories ring true. He does not sugar-coat anything. Language is often coarse. Many of the events recounted are brutal and inhumane. There is an institutionalized type of corruption among local officials and law enforcement personnel, often extending to the highest levels. Such corruption is not limited to the Mexican side of the border. Sheer incompetence and bureaucratic snafus are major hindrances to effective enforcement of the law.

Kirkpatrick is a "Cowboy Cop" who manages to get things done during his years not because of but in spite of the legal establishment under which he must operate. His personal life is deeply impacted. He is no saint. His life is at risk in many situations. He learns from his mistakes and from the mistakes of others. Learning to speak Spanish fluently and gaining an understanding of Mexican culture help him enormously.

Congressmen who are charged with passing laws on border security and illegal immigration would do well to read this book.
