Let The Mardi Gras Parties Begin

Cake On A Hot Tin Roof is the second in the A Piece Of Cake Mystery series.
It is only a couple weeks away from Mardi Gras and quite naturally all the bakeries are struggling to stay ahead of the game. Zydeco is just starting to recover from a loss of business after the murder of the owner, Phillipe, a few months ago. His almost ex-wife, Rita, is now owner as is barely able to keep her hear above water. Rita's mother-in-law is calling to remind her of the very important pre-Mardi Gras party the she has to be prompt at arriving at, when her Aunt and Uncle arrive unannounced.
They all arrive at the party and Rita assumes her position as hostess and set out to try and learn as much about the guests, while at the same time, spending time with her aunt and uncle. She soon notices that her uncle and one of the guests, Big Daddy Boudreaux are having words and her uncle gives him a couple shot to the jaw. As the party is winding down, Rita is walking around outdoors getting some fresh air, when she notices a body in the swimming pool. Not knowing if the person is dead or alive she enters the pool, only to find out that it is Big Daddy. Then the widow points out Rita's uncle to the police and says that he killed Big Daddy.
So now in addition to managing an almost over extended bakery staff, she must try and find out just killed Big Daddy. And there are a number of possibilities. Possibly a jealous wife, an unknown questionable business deal or maybe a close family squabble that got out of hand.
I'm enjoying this series. It's fun to see the behind the scenes aspect of a speciality bakery and watching the character development. Waiting the next delivery of baked goods.

fast-paced delightful amateur sleuth

When her parents died, Aunt Yolanda and Uncle Nester took their niece Rita Lucero into their New Mexico home treating her as their loving daughter. After the pastry chef married Chef Phillipe Renier she moved to New Orleans where they started Zydeco Cakes. They separated for two years; their marriage ended when a killer murders Phillipe (see A Sheetcake Named Desire). Since her husband had no will, Rita is a wealthy widow; while her grieving mother-in-law Miss Frankie is elated that Rita will run Zydeco.
Preparing for Mardi Gras, the staff of Zydeco is working long hours with little sleep as they bake for the Krewe of Musterion party. Adding to her stress is the visits of her loving Uncle Nestor, accompanied by his wife; he pressures Rita to return to New Mexico; as he cannot accept a woman living without male protection. Rita takes her relatives to a gala, but Nestor and Big Daddy Boudreaux get into a public fight. Shortly afterward, Big Daddy is found dead. The victim's widow accuses Nestor. Rita knows her uncle is not a killer and risks her life to prove her belief.
The second A Piece of Cake Mystery is a fast-paced delightful amateur sleuth tale starring a feisty independent pastry chef who cherishes the couple who took her into their home, but will not bow to her uncle's wishes. Nestor believes women need the protection of a caring strong man. Ironically he needs the detecting skills of his caring strong niece. Even with the investigative action in the middle of the well written plot, Cake On A Hot Tin Roof is an interesting whodunit with the only lingering question being which classic Tennessee Williams' play will follow.

Party til you drop

Rita Lucero has inherited a partial interest in her deceased husband's bakery in New Orleans. She's delighted to have the opportunity to show off her baking skills, having studied to be a pastry chef, but is also intimidated by the closed social scene of New Orlean's upper crust. She is pushed to fulfill a hosting obligation that her husband (from whom she was estranged) had made prior to his death. During the party, she is introduced to Big Daddy Boudreau, a wealthy but obnoxious and unpleasant car salesman who makes such a filthy suggestion about her aunt and Rita to her visiting uncle that he attacks Big Daddy. It comes as little surprise that her uncle is a suspect when Big Daddy's skull is koshed later that evening.
This is a strong mystery with a gripping plot. Each character is well developed and the setting is beautifully portrayed. I found the book to be an exciting page turner and can't wait to read more in the series.
