While helping her friend Delaine get ready for her wedding, Theodosia, owner of the Indigo Tea Shop, finds the dead body of the would-be groom, Douglas. In between running the shop, she asks questions and chases clues at Delaine’s request. The illegal Cuban cigars sold under the table at Douglas’ cigar shop catch the attention of local police, but Theo is focused on Douglas’ ex-wife, Simone, who is angry and impetuous. Matters are complicated by a team of television ghost hunters who bring Theo and Delaine to the site of Douglas’ death, hoping to connect with his spirit. Childs flavors an intelligent and layered mystery with colorful characters and tea history, along with recipes and resources. Fans of Childs’ other cozy series will enjoy this one as well, as will readers of Julie Hyzy’s Manor House Mysteries. --Amy Alessio

a series that's losing its luster
By Violetta
It happens. No matter how good a cozy mystery series is, keeping up the uniqueness and interest as the series continues is challenging. Laura Childs has had great success with her tea shop series. This is the 14th one, and this series has been my favorite of the three she writes. The Charleston, SC setting in the tea shop series is its main strong point, but a series needs more than a picturesque setting in order to flourish. In this one, the plot, its resolution, and the character development simply don't measure up.
Devoted readers of the tea shop series will be pleased to find the familiar characters: Tidwell, the grouchy detective; Theodosia, the tea shop owner and sleuth; Haley, the young chef; Drayton, the tea connoisseur; and Delaine Dish, owner of a clothing store but who, in this book, is portrayed as a "dear friend" of Theodosia who is distraught over the death of the man she was about to marry. For the most part, the familiar characters are much the same, but in some cases they've lost their edginess. Theodosia's boyfriend, Max, could be an interesting new character, and Theodosia seems to be devoted to him, but he rarely finds time to be with her, so there's not much new interest arising from their friendship. After 14 books, Haley and Drayton have each lost some of their individuality, and there aren't as many threads to the story as there once were. Instead, Theodosia seems to question endlessly what could have happened, how the murderer might be identified, and who it could possibly be. Repetition has set in, and the prose doesn't have the sparkle and inventiveness it once did.
If you're new to this series, I'd say try an earlier book--the first several are fine; I liked Chamomile Mourning especially. The early books are each different from one another, full of interesting tea history and customs, well-plotted, and fun to solve along with Theodosia. Those features are no longer present to the same extent, and as a result, the series simply doesn't hold my interest. I enjoyed it while it lasted, and that was a long time.

Revisiting the series after a long sabbatical
By Cathy G. Cole
First Line: Rain slashed against stained-glass windows and thunder shook the rafters as Theodosia Browning hurried up the back staircase of Ravencrest Inn.
Charleston, South Carolina, tea shop owner Theodosia Browning is late to her friend Delaine Dish's wedding, but that turns out not to be a problem. You see, the groom is stone cold dead in his room at the wedding venue, the Ravencrest Inn. A killer has crashed Delaine's nuptials before the "Wedding March" ever had a chance to start. Now Theodosia has to sort the suspects (Bride or Groom?) in an attempt to find the killer before the killer plans a reception for her.
I began reading Laura Childs' Tea Shop mysteries when she first began writing them. I loved the Charleston setting and the quirky, edgy characters were fun. Unfortunately that was several books ago in this--so far-- fourteen-book series. When I dove headfirst into this latest book, Charleston was as I remembered it, but the delightful characters seem to have lost a bit of their edge, and the mystery was rather perfunctory.
I think one of the things that surprised me most was the fact that one of the shallowest characters in this series-- Delaine Dish-- has graduated to being one of Theodosia's "dear friends." For me, Delaine is much too unlikable to focus a mystery upon. Frankly, my dear, I don't much care how upset she gets or which poor soul she's led into marriage. (Bless my heart, aren't I the cold-hearted reader!)
Theodosia has a new beau, Max, and she's evidently devoted to him, but he's scarcely seen or heard throughout the entire book. In fact, I'm wondering if-- with the inclusion of a new man showing lots of interest in the main character-- if Theodosia might have a few man troubles in a future book? That might certainly spice things up!
Besides the fact that the book is focused on a very shallow character, the mystery seems a bit thin on the ground, with fewer than normal twists, turns, and red herrings. Sweet Tea Revenge is a light, quick, enjoyable read, but it doesn't quite stand up with the earlier books in the series. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

This might be the end for me.
By TribalCat
I've faithfully followed and enjoyed Theodosia's story from the beginning and had really looked forward to this 14th book of the series, but I must say that it's rather disappointing. Theodosia has turned into a rude, disrespectful busybody who assumes that Tidwell, the police detective, works for her and must report all his findings to her as if this is HER investigation. She tramps through crime scenes without permission and even removes evidence (the beige thread) that she does turn in to the police, but since they didn't find it, how can they use it as evidence? Drayton is prissy, but he seems to have a good heart, and he plays true to character. Haley is a great cook, but her constant "teasing" of Drayton gets annoying after awhile. Theo's boyfriend, Max, and Delaine's sister, Nadine, should never have been in the book. They add nothing to the plot and are not at all interesting. Why is Nadine so much more upset about the death of Delaine's fiance than Delaine is, herself? Every one of Theo's boyfriends other than the first one have been written as one-dimensional afterthoughts with nothing to contribute to the story. Yes, we know Tidwell is overweight. Do we need to keep hearing how badly his clothes fit? The premise of the series is wonderful: A woman opens a quaint tea shop in the Historic District of beautiful Charleston, NC, and she just happens to solve murders. It just seems like the author is tired of telling this story. I do still enjoy her other two series, but I don't know if I'll keep reading this one.
