About the Author
Natascha Kampusch was born on February 17th, 1988, in Vienna. At the age of ten, she became victim to what proved to be one of the longest abductions in recent history. In 2006 she gained her freedom, and since then has been trying to live a normal life. Natascha graduated from college in 2010.
Jennifer Scapetis-Tycer grew up in Australia and trained and worked in London before coming to live in the U.S. Jennifer has worked in theater, TV, and radio drama. A professional voice and dialect coach, she is currently an assistant professor in the University of Connecticut's Department of Dramatic Arts.

In 1996 at age ten, the author was kidnapped on her way to school and held in a cellar in a town near Vienna, Austria. This is a biographical narrative of the author's eight years in captivity, from age 10 to age 18, told with incredibly astute insight into the psyche of victim and perpetrator alike. As most of us will never encounter a similar situation, accounts such as this are invaluable in helping us understand the minds of those who prey on children and the mindset necessary for survival. In addition to giving details of her captivity and the strategies she used to survive and finally escape, the author discusses quite eloquently her opinion on the label of "Stockholm Syndrome" and why she believes such a label harms victims of kidnapping even further. Her narrative gives the reader a unique and honest perspective that may challenge conventional assumptions. I truly hope the writing of this narrative helped the author in healing and I thank her for sharing not only her experience but her keen understanding of the psychological issues involved for both victim and criminal.

I had wanted to read this book after reading articles of it in the daily mail. I downloaded it to my kindle and it was there in seconds.
The book is compelling and well written, it is detailed in a way that you can picture the streets and the feelings and emotions. It was hard to believe that a woman who had been snatched off the streets at 10 and held captive for over 8 years could write such a piece of work in both an objective and subjective way.
One would imagine a woman who has found freedom from a dungeon after 8 years of captivity would be uneducated and lost in a fragmented world but the book would seem like it had been written by a psychologist.
It is difficult for us to grasp how this young woman has so much empathy and forgiveness for her captor who treated her like a slave beating her and stealing her youth but somehow she finds a way to understand him and yearn for his next visit to her dungeon so that she did not have to be alone.
The book tells of how she lost her freedom and became a prisoner from the young age of 10 and how her mind coped with the change of environment and how her will and determination fought on a daily basis to make some sense of what was happening to her. You are taken on a journey of sadness, fear, depravity, hope, isolation, torment, and abuse but still this girls soul did not give up.
We are shown how the soul of Natascha aged 18 came to visit 12 year old Natascha and promised her she would be there for her and help her and that when she was 18 she would lead her to freedom, this inner connection of future and present souls carried her through each grueling day and night until her freedom at aged 18.
It is hard to understand from our outside perspective how she can not hate her captor but one gets the feeling that she is connected to him in a way no one could imagine or understand as he was both her captor and the man that fed her and kept her alive.
Natascha does not speak of any sexual abuse from the captor at all and states it is the one thing she wants to keep private, one can not help but wonder if she has a sense of loyalty to her captor (who is now dead) or if talking about that would strip her of the inner strength she depends upon. I have read speculation in other places that sexual abuse was a main factor in the kidnapping but as this book is written by the victim she would have you believe that was not the case but at the same time refuses to discuss the matter.
From an outsiders perspective we can only imagine hating a man who took us from our family starved and beat us and hid us away for almost a decade. The book shows the real struggle for freedom, survival and the power of the human mind to cope with adversity even in someone so young as 10.
To read this book might make you appreciate the sun on your skin and the food on the table or the simplistic fact that your loved ones are asleep in the room next door and you can just go and hug them if you chose to.
This book is a must read to anyone who is interested in true crime and wants to be projected in some small way into her world of darkness and captivity to try and gain a scrap of insight as to what this remarkable girl has lived through.

The most incredible stories are written by life

I cannot review this book as if it was a novel. I wasn't written for my entertainment - it shows us a slice of a harsh reality in an unvarnished mirror.
Most people will be familiar with at least the basics of Natascha Kampusch's story: a 10-year old girl is abducted, dragged from the street into a waiting white van by a stranger. The rest of her childhood and youth is spent as his prisoner, almost his slave. For most of it, she is forced to live in a tiny room, cleverly hidden behind many doors. She has to endure a lot of pain and suffering; the violence spirals out of control. Isolation, humiliation, brutal beatings, starvation, sexual abuse. This would've broken most people; it didn't break this resourceful, brave girl.
It's an incredible experience to read this story from Natascha Kampusch's perspective. You cannot help but feel that an amazingly strong, intelligent and even wise women is sharing her life with us. Some people apparently react with irritation or even hostility to Natascha's refusal to meekly submit to what society expects from a victim. They cannot understand, let alone condone, that she has forgiven her tormentor. They condemn that she dared to find little moments of normality or even happiness.
Who are we - we, who watch from the outside, we, who are no more than voyeurs of her life - to presume to judge the survival strategies of a brave child?
