The world of the Nine Kingdoms expands...

First, since the order of these books can be confusing to those who aren't familiar with them, here is a listing of all the Nine Kingdoms stories (updated Jan '15):

Two Prelude short stories, found in anthologies with other authors:
- The Queen in Winter ("A Whisper of Spring" when Symon, the first king of Neroche, woos and wins Iolaire, princess of Ainneamh)
- To Weave a Web of Magic ("The Tale of Two Swords" where Mehar of Angesand and Gilraehen, --th king of Neroche, fall in love and the legendary sword of Angesand is forged.)

Miach and Morgan's story is told in:
1- Star of the Morning (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 1)
2- The Mage's Daughter (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 2)
3- Princess of the Sword (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 3)

Ruith and Sarah's story (which OVERLAPS Miach and Morgan's story in the timeline) is told in:
4- A Tapestry of Spells (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 4)
5- Spellweaver (this book)

So! Now that I've got all that hopefully stated clearly...

A Tapestry of Spells ended with Ruith and Sarah being separated, right after Sarah discovered who Ruith really was--namely, the youngest son of one of the most evil and powerful black mages history had ever known...and, what was almost worse to her mind, 3/4 elvin prince! Spellweaver begins only hours later, with Sarah, being just the daughter of a village witchwoman, realizing that she has absolutely no right to be feeling anything whatsoever for one of those high and mighty elves, even if he hadn't been a prince...which Ruith most certainly was. The fact that she has no magic whatsoever only cements the fact that her fond feelings for him really should be banished as quickly as she is able to manage the feat. He is clearly far, FAR out of her league, even if he won't admit it.

Sarah does, however, have the gift of seeing...a gift which puzzles Ruith and only adds to her fascination. To him, his heritage is more of a burden and curse than anything else...especially since he doesn't much like the thought that he'll have to keep living for centuries after Sarah's mortal life ends. And so he continues his attempts to avoid his magic and birthright. But reality presses in until he finally realizes that his magic is a tool, and he's got twenty years of lost experience to make up for. Events make it clear that if he doesn't learn fast, he'll most likely lose it to one of the many mages who would gladly claim his magic as their own.

The romance between Sarah and Ruith unfolds more in this book, though it is quieter and takes a back seat to the world-building and character growth. I missed the stronger romance that Miach and Morgan's story had. I still love this installment of Sarah and Ruith's story, though. Spellweaver focuses more on the unfolding of Sarah's gift and the discovery of who she really is. Her gift is one that made me grateful to see the world of the Nine Kingdoms through her eyes. So much beauty! ...running through words and souls and carvings of stone. ...dancing to the music played in the palace of the dwarves. And we get to marvel at it as Sarah learns to use what she sees.

Spellweaver also focuses on Ruith's struggle. Here he is, an elven prince with a library's worth of spells--including all of his father's--rattling around his poor brain. But it is precisely that knowledge that has caused him to bury his magic. It doesn't take Ruith too long, though, to realize that running from his past is childish. No one blames him for doing it when he was 10, but he can certainly do it no longer--especially since he'll need his magic to protect Sarah from those who seek her gift and to protect the world from those who seek his father's evil and powerful spells. But no sooner does he uncap his magic, then he realizes that twenty lost years of practice using it are not going to be made up easily, and his magic is about as unwieldy in his hands as a broadsword would be in the hands of a child. And all the signs are indicating that he's going to need not only all his magic and Sarah's sight, but also more skill than he currently has to best whomever is waiting for him in the far north.

That's what I love about this book. I love the challenge that Ruith is faced with. I love how the Nine Kingdoms world expands. I love the imagery and beauty and how visiting the Nine Kingdoms makes me look at our world a little differently. I love how Ruith is a curious (and humorous) mix of the hermit who lived on the mountain and a proud and glamorous elvin prince who can outfit a room in luxury with a few choice bits of Fadaire.

And I love the setup that this book gives for the finale (coming next year). I love the way this book plays out alongside Princess of the Sword (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 3) in the timeline of the Nine Kingdoms. I love that we have only a tantalizing bit of a hint about who is waiting for Ruith, and I love that the hint both ups the stakes and opens new questions of how? and why? I love that neither Sarah nor Ruith could possibly succeed in their task alone, and I love how Ruith just might be the ONLY one who can do what lies ahead.

I'm giving this one 4-stars as well, since 4 1/2 stars is not possible. This trilogy is not quite as good as Miach and Morgan's trilogy. It moves slowly and gets repetitious in places. But again, the beauty of the writing, the world-building, and the magic moments laced with romance make up for it and still make this an enjoyable book worth re-reading.

Now I just have to be patient all year long until Gift of Magic comes out!

When a book is part of a trilogy, do you rate each book on its own merits, or do you consider the entire trilogy in the rating? I honestly don't know.

I'm going to leave the above review intact as I originally wrote it. (At least for now.) However, I feel obligated to add this caveat: the final book doesn't fulfill what the first two (especially this one) led me to anticipate. I find myself reading this review and feeling disappointed because that the lead-up excitement I felt wasn't fulfilled.

Am I disappointed in this one now for getting my hopes up? Or am I disappointed in Gift of Magic for not fulfilling everything I hoped it would? Or should all the blame rest on Gift of Magic? I'm honestly not sure. I still love Lynn Kurland's writing, so I know I'll end up re-reading the entire trilogy again. I also admit that if I had picked up Gift of Magic from an unknown author, expecting to be disappointed (because I usually am--I'm very picky), I would have liked it quite a bit and been interested in reading more from the author.

But I wasn't. This is an author whose work I generally love, and this book led me to hope for a decent amount in the end of the story...and the end of the story didn't have it.

When I do re-read it (knowing how it'll end this time), I might very well come back and amend the reviews for all three. I don't know. But in the meantime, I feel compelled to at least add this note.

Next please!

I finished Spellweaver a couple days ago and it has taken me until now to process how I'd review it... Coming off the high of the first Nine Kingdoms trilogy with Miach and Morgan, I was disappointed in A Tapestry of Spells. The story, plot and characters felt too familiar - like it was merely a slight reworking of the previous trilogy with similar acting characters just different names. And in some ways I still felt that way with Spellweaver. There are a lot of similarities in the characters of Sarah and Ruith in comparison to Miach and Morgan. Both ladies have an aversion for magic (and mages) and initially don't understand/accept that they have their own power (granted for Morgan that was a great deal of magic and for Sarah we are still learning about her "vision" and weaving skills). Both Ruith and Miach shoulder great responsibility- with their birthrights that they have a hard time accepting (Miach) or a familial connection that they have a hard time reconciling with.

When A Tapestry of Spells ended we were left hanging with what was going to happen with both of heroes. (I will not give away that ending in case you have not read it yet.) The focus of Spellweaver is more on character development- we learn a lot of interesting tidbits about Sarah- some that I suspected were coming but others were an insightful twist. Spellweaver actually reminded me quite a bit of the beginning of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. There is a lot of time spent wandering and searching (here for Gair's spells and Daniel, in HP for horcruxes). The momentum and pace of the story is a nice gradual build- like the Mage's Daughter (the 2nd story in Miach and Morgan's series) there is not as much action- the major "battles" are being saved for the last installment. The romance between Sarah and Ruith continues to develop and flourish, in quite an achingly sweet and touching manner. Move over Miach, Ruith is a new favorite LK hero!! ;-)

I am quite impressed by LK's ability to interweave her stories. There is some overlap happening with the first trilogy- not so much so that anyone who has not read the first couldn't jump in on A Tapestry of Spells and Spellweaver and then move on to Star of Morning, Mage's Daughter and Princess of the Sword. (A very smart move to allow new readers to jump in at any time- since the same is true with her time travel/historical romances.)

Overall Spellweaver is an intriguing continuation of the story presented in a Tapestry of Spells. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed it much more than its predecessor. I was worried that this wouldn't be as enjoyable a series because it didn't start out that well... but I didn't need to worry. As I drew closer and closer to the end of the book, the thought of having to leave this world was depressing. I wanted to continue to live vicariously through the sweet interplay between Ruith and Sarah. I await most anxiously the finale... SIGH... next year. Once again Ms. Kurland has presented a lovely tale that is free from the smut that ruins/bogs down so many other romances. It is such a relief to be able to pick up a romance book and not have to worry about any unnecessarily graphic love scenes, profanity, or overly sensual language. I tend to veer to Christian romances for that very reason, just because I don't want to feel scandalized (or embarrassed- as I've gotten my mom hooked on these) by what I'm reading. I wish there were more authors like her...

Beautiful character building; Not much action

This novel is the sequel to A Tapestry of Spells (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 4), and the second part of Ruith and Sarah's trilogy. It's a slow-moving novel, but every page is beautiful. The characters do much thinking and self-discovery. I usually prefer more action, but found at the end that I was very satisfied that I took the day and a half to read it. It was tenderly written, and the ending might bring a tear to your eye.

The main objective in this trilogy is for Ruith and Sarah to locate and assemble the entirety of Gair's evil spells, then destroy them before any number of black mages can make use of them. The urgency of this task is all but lost in the much-described journey to self-discovery of both Ruith and Sarah. Hardly any details are spent on moving along the plot, and almost all spent on waiting to leave or taking that last good meal for a long, long time. There are some missed opportunities for action, even if the primary purpose for this novel is to prepare Ruith and Sarah for the action later to come. For instance, I wouldn't have minded reading more details about Ruith's rough practice sessions in the magic lists.

Nevertheless, what I loved about the book was the characters from previous novels that were developed deeper. My favorite is Soilleir, and I truly hope Lynn Kurland writes his own trilogy so that I can see him "wallow" in his longing, as Ruith predicted.

Ultimately, Spellweaver is worth the read as a beautiful story of self-discovery. I expect Ruith and Sarah's third book will move at a faster pace as the threads of their tapestry are tied together. For a supporting novel in a fabulous series, this is definitely worth the read, though not always exactly page-turning.

inspirational Amish romance

Amish Widow Sarah Mast loves her work helping people as a midwife. When her Aunt Emma Stolzus asks Sarah to join her practice in Pleasant Valley Pennsylvania as she can no longer handle the load; the niece accepts the offer and relocates excited to start a new life. Carpenter Aaron Miller agrees to build their facility though he personally detests the practice of midwifery. However, her joy of working with her aunt turns heartbreaking as Emma is ill.

Aaron's pregnant married sister Molly is coming home as her spouse is working temporarily in Wisconsin. He vows to keep Molly away from midwives. When Molly arrives she chooses Sarah to help her with her pregnancy. Finally the English Dr. Mitchell presses charges that Sarah is practicing medicine without a license. Her only hope to defend herself resides with Aaron, but he is blind to what she has done for her patients and how he feels about her.

The latest Pleasant Valley inspirational Amish romance (see Anna's Return) is a superb contemporary that focuses on the role of a midwife in modern America. Sarah is the glue holding the fine storyline together; as she learns to use what God has given her to help those in need even when skeptics like the man she loves rip her heart. Marvelous Marta Perry provides another powerful Pleasant Valley tale.

Book Four in Pleasant Valley Series

This was another good book by Marta Perry. I don't think it was quite as good as books 2 and 3 were (Rachel's Garden and Anna's Return)but it was still an enjoyable read. I have thoroughly enjoyed all the books I have read by Marta Perry. The protaganists are strong, confident women. Many of the plots involve a mystery, but this book does not. It is an Amish romance about a widowed midwife who is trying to start a new life in Pleasant Valley as a 2nd midwife in her aunt's practice. Many obstacles are sent her way and she often wonders if she has made a terrible mistake in thinking this is where God wants her. Many of the characters from the previous books are in this one as well. It is nice to catch up on their stories as well. This is a great series and I am looking forward to the next installment 'Katie's Way' due out in November.
If you like Amish romance and enjoy reading about their beliefs and lifestyle, I highly recommend this series as well as all of Marta Perry's books.

SCRUMPTIOUS!!!

The Food Channel comes to Scottsdale, Arizona, by way of the Scottsdale Food Festival. Mel Cooper and Angie DeLaura are determined to win top prize for the Fairy Tale Cupcakes Bakery or may die trying. They have to "beat" their arch rival Olivia Puckett first just to get entered into the competition and beating her with their delicious desserts will just be icing on their cupcakes.

Even with Mel's mentor, Vic Mazzotta, Food Channel celebrity chef, sitting in one of the judge's chairs, Mel knows she will need to use all her culinary skills to create the best dish using the daily mystery ingredients if they are going to take home the grand prize.

Shocked when Vic doesn't show up to judge the girls know something is amiss. They are just planning to search for him when a dead body is found in a freezer truck on the festival grounds. Someone had put Vic on ice, permanently. Now they not only have to ice their competition with their fabulous cupcakes they also need to find a cold blood killer.

My Thoughts
This is a scrumptious series and the latest installment is absolutely delicious!!

Two strong women, some hunky men and frosting how can you go wrong, lol!!!!

Truthfully the characters are lovable and becoming more defined in each story. I love Oz, the newest face at Fairy Tale Cupcakes. The plot is timely and clever. The mystery ingredients competition reminded me of the mystery box challenges of Master Chef on Fox. There were assorted "red herrings" to divert us and lead us astray. Plus cupcakes, lots and lots of cupcakes!!! (recipes included)

WARNING: You will be craving cupcakes while reading this so be sure to have some handy!!

Jenn even gives us a taste of the next temptation, Red Velvet Revenge, and I can't wait to get my sticky hands on it. For now just be sure to get your copy of Death by the Dozen today and enjoy!!!

Tasty Cozy Mystery

Melanie Cooper and Angie DeLaura would like to win the chef's challenge at the Scottsdale Food Festival for a number of reasons: the prize money is good; it would be great publicity for their Fairy Tale Cupcakes Bakery; and they have a chance to beat their archrival Olivia Puckett. Their enthusiasm is dampened however when the body of one of the judges, Vic Mazzota, is found. Mel is devastated by the death of her mentor and wants to find out who killed him. Will her investigation solve the murder or put her and Angie in danger?

"Death by the Dozen" is the wonderfully done third book in Jenn McKinlay's Cupcake Bakery cozy mystery series. There is a lot to like about this book (and series) starting with the main characters - Mel, Angie, and Tate. The book is written from Mel's point of view but the ongoing Angie/Tate storyline is well done, well paced, and romantic (even if the two can't quite get their act together), and I can't wait to see what happens to the two of them in the next book. McKinlay is adept at adding interesting new characters to the series - in Buttercream Bump Off (Cupcake Bakery Mystery) it was Marty, in this book it is Oz. The cooking competition is a nice creative idea - the competitors have to use a unique ingredient that is unknown to them until the last minute - and there are several recipes with those ingredients at the back of the book. The mystery aspects of the book are as well done as the characters and bakery setting. There is a real sense of danger throughout the book as Mel gets a little too close to figuring out who the killer is. The book is deftly plotted - after finishing it you may want to go back to a conversation Mel had with the killer early on and realize what danger she was in throughout the book. There are plenty of suspects to pick from and more than a few surprises. Besides the tension, there is some sadness in the book (Mel was close to the victim) and as always some nice humor (Olivia is as annoying as ever but thankfully not quite as over the top as she was in Buttercream Bump Off (Cupcake Bakery Mystery)).

"Death by the Dozen" is another great entry in a cozy mystery series that gets better and better with each book.

Cupcakes, Competition and a Corpse.

Jenn McKinlay nails it in her third book if the Cupcake Bakery Mystery series.

Melanie and Angie have lots of reasons to want to win the Challenge to the Chefs competition- money, publicity and beating their rival Olivia Puckett. It also gives Mel a chance to reconnect with her mentor Vic Mazzotta, who is now a celebrity chef and judge of the contest. Mel and Angie think their biggest problem is figuring out what mystery ingredients the judges will throw at them to add to their cupcakes, but when Vic ends up dead in a freezer they realize they have a much bigger mystery to solve. Now they must figure out who killed Vic and who is out to make sure they lose more than just the contest.

In addition to the mystery which will keep you guessing, there is a lot to love about this book. The characters are very likable and well developed. The three main characters Mel, Angie and Tate are business partners who share a long friendship, a dislike for Olivia, and love for movie quotes. Mel is dating Angie's brother, which could get messy. To further complicate things, Tate is in love with Angie and you wonder how this will affect their friendship. We are also introduced to a new character, Oz, in this book and I hope he is around for a long time to come.

This is a perfect cozy for the cupcake lover, as there are recipes in the back so that you can recreate the unusual cupcakes prepared for the competition. I do suggest that you read the first two in the series first if you have not already, so that you can see these characters grow from the beginning. Hopefully, you'll be hooked from the end of Sprinkle with Murder and eagerly awaiting the release of Red Velvet Revenge like I am.

Excellent collection of paranormal mysteries

The names Margaret Maron and Max Allan Collins on the cover of "Crimes by Moonlight" caught my eye. After discovering that this was a collection of 20 "Mysteries from the Dark Side", I was hooked. After reading each story, I can say the collection lived up to its promise. This is an excellent and varied collection of short stories by a mixture of well-known and lesser known authors.

I hadn't read anything by the editor of the collection, Charlaine Harris, prior to this. However, I loved her story about vampire Dahlia Lynley-Chivers. It was full of both adventure and humor, and I would love to read more stories about this character. Other great vampire stories in this collection are Parnell Hall's "Death of a Vampire" and Toni L.P. Kelner's "Taking the Long View". Not all of the stories were related to vampires. For example, Elaine Viets' story of second sight was suspenseful, but still included her wonderful sense of humor. I enjoyed the ghost stories by Barbara D'Amato, Mike Wiecek, and Carolyn Hart. I also liked Dana Cameron's story, which started out like a traditional mystery - until a werewolf came along! I enjoyed the collaboration of Max Allan Collins and Mickey Spillane in an unusual Mike Hammer story. There is quite a mixture of different types of stories and settings, so the collection really does have something for everyone.

I have read many collections that have only a couple of good stories, but "Crimes by Moonlight" contains one great story after the other. Fans of vampire and other paranormal stories will love this collection. In addition, those that like the work of contributing authors such as Harley Jane Kozak, Elaine Viets, and Margaret Maron, who aren't usually known for paranormal stories, will love seeing another side of these authors.

A little bit of info.

I bought this book for Charlaine Harris's story but decided to read them all and try to write something about each one. These stories are all so short it's hard to give a synopsis without giving away too much or ruining the ending. I tried to be as careful as I could not to ruin the "punch line", because of this in most of the stories I couldn't even tell you what kind of supernatural is even in them. All the stories have something paranormal in it. (vamp, shifter, ghost,...) Unfortunately I think the stories are just too short to truly give you a taste of a new author. I personally prefer anths that have 3 or 4 stories in them instead.

(Stories are listed in the books order)

1) Dahlia Underground - Charlaine Harris - vamp - Story should be read RIGHT after Harris's Southern Vampire Bk7 "All together Dead". Dahlia Lynley-Chivers wakes up buried in the pyramid rubble (see/read A.T.D.) This story contain the local vamp's reaction/retaliation to the explotion. It may be short but it's a nice little addition to the Sookie series plus I like Dahlia and want to read more of her. At this point this is the third short with her in it plus she make a cameo appearance in A.T.D. (also in Tacky, Bacon) This story should be an epilog at the end of A.T.D.

2) Hixton - William Kent Krueger - Reporter D'Angelo tracks down an old retired cop to hear the true story about 5 missing boys and gets more than he expected - this one is a type of remake of a common children's story, can't tell you which one or I ruin the ending. - not to my "taste" (you'll get my joke after you read it)

3) Small Change - Margaret Maron - shifter - Laurel (13yr old) set out in an unusual way to catch the thief of her dad's antique store - kind of cute little story I would be interested in giving one of her longer stories a try

4) The Trespassers - Brendan Dubois - Police Chief Hoyt Graham is called in the middle of the night to a local famous house to find 1 half of a 2 man TV ghost hunting team dead - not great but worth a little time if you get this book.

5) Madeeda - Harley Jane Kozak - Jane England, a pregnant mother and her twin son's get messages from a purple and green witch - this one is very weird and hard to describe.

6) House of Horrors - S.W. Hubbard - The Harrigan family spend the day at the Jersey Shore bonding with their new adopted 9yr. old daughter and a teen boy goes missing in the House of Horrors. - didn't care for this one at all

7) Sift, Almost Invisible, Through - Jeffrey Somers - a man gives a series of photos of himself taken over a year's time all featuring the same mystery man in the background to PI Philip K. Marks. Who or what is this man?

8) The Bedroom Door - Elaine Viets - Leila is warned by her "cursed" grandmother that her business partner will die in 3 days.

9) The Conqueror Worm - Barbara D'Amato - Neal Hofstra received e-mails from an old friend ... a dead friend

10) In Memory of the Sibylline - Lou Kemp - The events aboard a ship in the 1800's and its mysterious guest- an interesting story, might be worth a look at others by this author, maybe.

11) The Bloodflower - Martin Meyers - how having the right/wrong apartment can change 1 women's life forever- didn't care for this story.

12) The Awareness - Terrie Farley Moran - a banshee investigates the murder of one of her charges - has some interesting possibilities for a book or series here.

13) Tadesville - Jack Fredrickson - the life of a banjo player on the road, it never pays to be greedy - I'll take a pass on this one

14) Limbo - Steve Brewer - Mercer wakes up dead on an otopsy table and sets off to find his killer

15) The Insider - Mike Wiecek - Detective Clark is asked to investigate a ghost giving stock tips. Is it legal or insider trading?

16) Swing Shift - Dana Cameron - Jake Steuben is called in by his FBI friend to go undercover to find the source of a governmental leak to the Nazis. - a little interesting, shows some promise for a series/book.

17) Riding High - Carolyn Hart - Bailey Ruth Raeburn a ghost/emissary from Heaven kills time after completing her mission.

18) Grave Matter - Max Allan Collins and Mickey Spillane - Mike Hammer a WW2 vet gets news an old war buddy is dead, he goes to investigate since no one else will, not even the police.

19) Death of a Vampire - Parnell Hall - goth college student hires P.I. Stanley Hastings to first find out if her boyfriend really is a vampire, then find him after he goes missing - not to bad of a story

20) Taking the Long View - Toni L.P. Kelner - vampire couple Mark and Stella go to a vampire birthday party were another vamp ends up dead. Who is the killer? - cute, has possibilities for more.

As I have NOT read anything by most of these authors and they are sooo short I can't really comment much. (Think a chapter length per story.) Several of them I suspect are like Harris's story and part of a series that would make the short better/fill in the blanks. I had to struggle to get myself to finish this book because I didn't like the majority of it. I still wish they had cut out most of them and giving us longer shorts so we could get a better idea if it is worth checking out any of the other authors or not. Even the stories I think hold promise I don't know if I well ever bother to look for more or not with such a small taste. I've read enough books that had the idea for a great story but no ability to complete it.

All in all I would only recommend this book to someone that is getting it because one of the stories are part of a series they already have and only if you "really" want to read the short. I would not recommend it to a new reader. If you are looking at this book as an anthology to find a new author try a different one with fewer stories. If you want it for Harris's story like I did and have the patience wait and see if she comes out with another book like "A Touch of Dead" that groups her shorts into one book. I didn't have the patience myself. :( But my guess is she will.

strong paranormal mysteries anthology

These twenty short stories focus on paranormal mysteries that run the urban fantasy gamut with vampires, werewolves, witches, ghosts, seers, mages and Mike Hammer making featured appearances. All of the contributions by The Mystery Writers of America authors are enjoyable tales that sub-genre fans will want to read as the diversity of the supernatural adds to the overall fun. Vampires are right at home in Parnell Hall's amusing "Death of a Vampire" and Charlaine Harris's "Dahlia Underground". Ghosts star in Harley Jane Kozak's "Madeeda", Carolyn Hart's "Riding High" as a marriage counselor and even as a phantom ship in Lou Kemp's "In Memory of the Sibylline". Finally Hammer has a "Grave Matter" (by Max Allan Collins and Mickey Spillane) case with a supernatural taint. This is a strong anthology as everyone contributing showed up in top form providing enjoyable Crimes by Moonlight: Mysteries from the Dark Side collection.

Some things I’ve hated forever, some are new acquisitions, and some are just passing fancies. Today I hate happy TV weathermen, feminists who believe Gloria Steinem’s great looks hurt her, Gloria Steinem herself, people who mispronounce the word ask, studio apartments, guidance counselors, first ladies, old people. So if any of this offends you, or you happen to love puppies and kittens and the infirm . . . well . . . I’m impressed. I hate you, but I’m impressed . . .

I know what you’re thinking: “Joan, hate is a very strong word.” You’re right, it is, but I use it as an umbrella term, the way mental-health professionals use the word schizophrenia as a catchall for any particular brand of crazy they can’t identify. So when I say hate, I don’t necessarily mean hate. I could also mean loathe, detest, abhor, dislike, despise or resent. See, isn’t that kinder and gentler? If you think this makes you a better person than I am, good. You’re the idiot that actually paid for this book.

For those of you thinking, Geez, Joan seems a little angry, you’re half right. I am angry. I’m also fed up. I’m fed up with the morons and losers and cretins who are cluttering up the planet. Emma Lazarus wrote, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” I didn’t know she meant on my block. But being fed up and angry is better than being depressed. Psychologists tell us that depression is just anger turned inward, but I say, why waste your time? It is what it is and quite frankly I’d rather be angry than depressed. Why? Because antidepressants like Prozac, Wellbutrin and Zoloft can cause bloating—and I hate bloating!!! (I need to go back and add bloating to the list of things I hate. Is there anything worse than not being able to fit into a size two Valentino? I think not. Talk about depressing.)

An AWFUL little book, but I can't help myself

This is an AWFUL little book that is so offensive I ought to throw it right out the window...but I can't, because I can't stop laughing. Just the line about why chocolate doesn't count as decadent had me...well, I don't want this review to be censored, so I'll stop. Just read the book and you'll see what I mean!

Four stars instead of five because I'm afraid giving it five will get me sent straight to hell when I die. You understand, don't you, Joan?

Only thing missing is the rim shot!

This isn't so much a book as a series of one liners from one of the funniest stand-up comedians ever. I've loved Joan River's humor since her early appearances on Johnny Carson, and this book reads like vintage Joan! I laughed so hard, I scared the cat out of bed and usually the only thing that can do that is a needed trip to the litter box or (if I'm lucky) coughing up a hair ball.

Nothing is sacred, everything is a target for her quick wit. If you are easily offended, skip this book. If you like old-fashioned stand-up, click that "buy" button now - it's like a trip back to the Borscht Belt.

"A Book Only Joan Can Write"

You have to give Joan Rivers credit for coming up with a smart and intelligent title to her latest book" I Hate Everyone...Starting With Me". The content is pretty simple...Joan hates everything and everyone and is not shy when it comes to writing about it. Everyone from the sappy weather man to people having babies to movie stars and holy rollers, Joan says it like no one else can. The book is simply a hilarious take on today's pop culture and is written as a funny, yet, perverse appoach, on what is wrong with the world.

I cannot think of any other entertainer who would have the guts to write this, but Joan Rivers does and I applaud her for it. Believe me you will not sit down with this book and say, "boring", because nothing Joan does or writes about is boring. The subtext to this book is to let your feelings out and don't repress them. Once you express your opinions you will feel better and happy, even if those opinions may not please most people, but do you think Joan really cares what others think?

Ahhhhhh, if I could be more like my Joan.

True reality....

I recently decided to re-read Frances Kuffel's first book "Passing for Thin" when I discovered her new book, Angry Fat Girls. I ordered two copies right away and was anxious for their arrival. One copy is for me and another for a friend who shares the same "reality." Losing only to regain what seems like the same 100 pounds over and over again. In this book, Frances' journey is interwoven with those of Lindsay, Katie, Mimi and Wendy. Friends she met here on Amazon. Each woman's story is different and yet the same. I can relate to so much having been on my own weightloss rollercoaster my entire life. I laugh with Frances and at times I cry. My heart aches for these women and their pain. I cheer their victories.

Frances has a edgy humor that suits me. Her thoughts on giving your weight to God or a Higher power made me laugh out loud. Her words, "I can't bear people talking about HP. I inevitably wonder how Hewlett-Packard has provided a miracle." Seriously Frances, I think the computer world miracles are handled by Apple.

As a woman who has spent much of my life "mordidly obese" there are frank topics that I have never seen or heard mentioned before. I am not just like anyone of these five women, but I am the same...just the same.

Mimi's simple realization, "It's my decision whether to be happy or unhappy" struck me as I had that moment about 20 years ago. I chose to be happy whatever I weighed although I want to be healthy so I continue the effort to lose half of myself once again.

Frances deals in facts. "Just the facts Ma'am!" The way she relates those facts really does suit me. Call it inspiration. Maybe I feel a common soul with her and her friends. I know I share a common story. I hope that they are all able to leave the anger behind and find happiness in their lives regardless of their current weight.

This is a thoughful, thought filled book

I wanted to like this book

I am currently reading this book, and I find it very difficult to get through. I really wanted to like this book because I can identify so much with all of these women. However, I feel like she does a terrible job writing this book. Someone else mentions that she goes off on these little tangents that go on and on. I completely agree. As someone with a difficult time concentrating, I could not focus on her points. She has way too much babble going on. So to make this review shorter, I would not recommend this book to anyone who likes clear cut and straight to the point reading.

Thank God It Was a Library Book

I tried to like this book. I did. It usually only takes me 2-4 days to read a book. I haven't even made it halfway through and I've had it two weeks. The structure and layout is beyond frustrating.

This woman tries to be too many different things at once. She cannot seem to decide if she wants to be a memoir, a book about herself and four other woman, a book about obesity, or reviewing/bashing "Fat Chick Lit" (I'm quoting). She talks about herself in one paragraph, and then goes off on a review about a book, then picks up where a story about her friend left off three pages ago.
She expects you to keep track of five woman's horrible issues, childhood, relationships (past and present), relationships with food (past and present), and their weight losses/gains, without any clear path. I found myself flipping back to previous pages just to remind myself who the hell someone was.
It says it's a story about a year of woman gaining and loosing weight, but I cannot find a clear time line. She'll talk about this girl first, then in the next go on about the other girl's family issues, while sprinkling in her own, before going back to the original.

This book would have been bearable if she had organized it properly. Each woman gets their own chapter, or just something better than this.

She doesn't even seem to treat her friends or herself very well. She talks about them as if they're in high school gossiping in the locker room.

There seem to be MUCH better memoirs out there about extreme weight loss that are actually ABOUT weight loss, and not droning about eight different topics. If you want a real story that is followable, skip this one. If I had actually bought this book, I'd be really upset.

If Dez would just work to keep him at arm's length, the way everybody else did, maybe it would be easier not to be so obsessed with her. So desperate for a touch, a taste . . . a night.

A lifetime, even.

Stop it.

She glanced over her shoulder at him and said, "Julie won't be here until after her shift at the clinic is over. So if you're really determined that I'm not to be alone, either you call me another babysitter or you make yourself at home."

Then she sauntered off into the depths of the house.

Taylor found himself watching the way her ass swayed back and forth and wishing, really wishing, he had the strength to call her another "babysitter," as she called it. But he also knew there was no way in hell he was going to miss out on spending a little bit of time with her. Away from work. Out of that damned hospital.

Here. In her home. Where he could assure himself she was safe, alive.

Whole.

Staring into the refrigerator, Dez found herself contemplating the bottle of wine. It was too damn early, she knew. Plus, she was still a little off-kilter from the pain meds and she knew she'd be popping another shortly.

But still. Every once in a while, liquid courage did help things a bit and she needed something to help loosen her tongue because she couldn't seem to figure out the right way to go and talk to Taylor and tell him something very, very simple.

Thanks for saving my life.

"Are you hungry?"

She jumped, startled. Turning around, she stared at him and then she gaped, a little dismayed at the sight of him. He'd taken his jacket off. He'd loosened his tie.

Hell--it was almost like he was . . . naked. At least for Taylor Jones. Those suits of his were like armor, she'd always thought.

"Are you okay?"

Jerking her eyes away from his chest, she stared at him and stammered out . . . something. She didn't know what.

"Maybe you should sit down. You look flushed."

No, I look hot. As in turned on, she thought irritably. All because my fricking boss undid the top two buttons on his pristine white dress shirt and loosened that damn tie.

And the jacket. Mustn't forget the jacket he'd taken off.

Swallowing, she turned around and grabbed a can of Diet Coke from the fridge. Over her shoulder, she said, "I'm just thirsty. Tired. Nobody ever gets any rest in a hospital, you ever noticed that?"

"I've never had to stay in one," he said. "But plenty of my people have."

There was a weight in his voice.

Slowly, she turned and studied him.

That heavy, strange weight she'd heard in his voice was echoed in his eyes, she realized. It didn't show in his face--no, very little was ever revealed on that face of his, but those eyes . . . somewhere, just behind a rigid, steely curtain, she sensed a great deal of chaos. Pain. Guilt.

She remembered how many times she'd heard that he was at the hospital because one of them had gone down. This was the first time for her--she was rarely ever in a place where there was any action going on. But her best friend, Taige, had been hurt a few times and she knew, vividly, thatTaylorliked to haunt hospital halls.

No, he didn't show much emotion to the world. But he felt it, she realized. He felt a great deal.

And suddenly, those words were a lot easier to find.

"You saved my life," she said softly, setting her drink down and crossing her arms over her chest. "I haven't said thank you for that."

"You don't need to. I never should have let you put yourself in that position."

Dez arched a brow. Oh, yeah, there was emotion. She was nowhere near the emotional bloodhound some of her colleagues where, but psychics, most of them, had similar natures and she could pick up the vibes well enough.

What she didn't understand was why she hadn't ever picked these up from him before.

Unless he was just having a harder time keeping it all hidden . . .

Pushing off the counter, she circled the island to stand in front of him. "There was a girl inside that house,Taylor. He would have killed her."

"We don't know that."

"Don't we?" Reaching down, she caught his hand and said, "Come on."

For just a second, he resisted.

She had no idea why she'd grabbed his hand. She was surprised as hell that she'd done it.

She was equally stunned when his fingers, long, cool, and elegant, closed around hers. She led him to the bathroom and left him standing by the counter as she faced the mirror. "This damn tape itches like crazy," she said. "I kept telling that nurse to find some paper tape. I think she liked ignoring me."

"You shouldn't be exposing that yet," he said, his voice gruff.

Dez rolled her eyes and made a face at him in the mirror. "Yes, Daddy."

Something flashed in the depths of his steely blue eyes--something hot--something that made her knees do the weirdest damn thing. Swallowing, she tore her eyes away from him and focused on her reflection, watching as she peeled the bandage away and revealed the neat surgical scar on her throat.

Dumping the bandages in the trash, she turned to face him. Bracing her hips against the marble countertop, Dez angled her chin up, let him stare.

He did. For long, long seconds. Then he turned on his heel and stalked out.

I'm in Love with a Character!

Unless, I am DEEPLY moved and impressed with a novel, I don't typically write reviews; i know it's unfair, and even a little lazy, but it is what it is ;--) However; i was deeply affected by this storyline I just had to...I will not get into the deets about this one, since others have already done so. But I will say I have not read such a riveting, grab me by the seat of the pants, beautiful romantic/suspense novel like the "Departed" in sooo long, I had to leave a comment. Please, please, please read this book; it will leave quite an impression. I hope Shiloh will continue with this sequel and write more about the FBI, Pyschi team headed by Taylor Jones, i'd spend me lunch money to purchase it. I HIGHLY recommend this book!!!!

The Departed is a strong new contemporary paranormal which is the second in a series about paranormal investigators who work for the government. This first book in the series was called The Missing. It is not necessary to have read Missing to enjoy this well-written story.

Agent Taylor Jones works for the FBI and has the unique ability to gather those with very special talents to work with him. Although he knows it is wrong, he craves one of his subordinates, Desiree Lincoln. Dez can commune with the dead. She works tirelessly to help them 'depart' after their deaths when they cannot leave due to an often violent end. However, their latest assignment nearly kills her and as a result Taylor tries to protect her. They have a night of wild passion but Taylor locks her out and tells her it can never happens again. But Dez wants Taylor and her independence and quits the team. Taylor realizes how much he misses Dez and hunts her down but finds Dez investigating a suspicious death.

Dez is being haunted by the ghost of a high school jock who died violently. He tells Dez that he was murdered by his friends when he protested the killing of a young girl. But one of these young men has a powerful and influential father. Dez must stop them since they plan to kill the girl on Halloween and it is fast approaching that time. Can Dez save the girl and prevents more deaths before it is too late?

This was quick read that caught my instant attention. The sexual tension between Taylor and Dez is steaming HOT. I also loved the mystery and the murderous characters who were so twisted and evil that I wanted them brought to justice. Since Dez can talk with the ghost many times, she already knows what has happened. It is proving what she knows and how she fights against the deviousness characters who are trying to hide their murder which makes this story so interesting.

Strong characters and scorching hot romance make this story a guaranteed winner!

Excellent psychic detective story

I would have given this kindle book 5 stars except there were weird dashes surrounding certain words placed throughout the text. It really interfered with the flow of reading and was incredibly irritating. Other than that, the book was excellent.
