The Last Camel Charge: The Untold Story of America's Desert Military Experiment by Forrest Bryant Johnson (Berkley, 2012#, is everything you wanted to know about American history from 1820 to the Civil War wrapped around the U.S. Army Camel Corps like a pig in a blanket. That's right--Camel Corps! Born from the need to explore and traverse the wild, dangerous and unforgiving deserts of the American Southwest and the Utah Territory in the mid-1800's, the U.S. military undertook a bold and radical experiment and purchased camels to bear the burden of transporting men and materiel across the Mojave, and other inhospitable areas, and to serve in battle when needed, which they did into the Civil War #tiny spoiler alert#. These exotic #and dirty) beasts were better suited to desert travel than horses or mules and were virtually sun resistant. The trick was getting a horse-loving military establishment to buy into the idea. Forrest Johnson, noted author of Hour of Redemption and Phantom Warrior, among others, sinks the hook into the reader from the first page with a masterful twist, and seasons each chapter with a lively blend of American heroes and infamous villains that create an eye-popping page turner that every American will learn from and enjoy. Fantastic Book

Every so often an author creates a solid book chock full of excitement, suspense and an almost romantic view of history. Books that come to mind are The Killer Angels and The Red Badge of Courage. What makes them classics is that they approach history from the personal touch, not from the historical. It would be wrong to classify The Last Camel Charge as mesmerizing, suspenseful, catastrophic or a page-turner, a can't-put-it-down book. Better to let the reader immerse himself in something special, the love of men for camels, their entrance into the Southwest, their superiority over horses and mules, and their moment of greatness.

Read The Last Camel Charge and all of these terms will present themselves. There will be but one sadness as you read it. That will come when the book is ended and there is finally no more to enjoy. Your adventure into history will have ended and there will be sorrow the Charge is done. And that is when you will again lift Forrest Johnson's monumental work and read it again, for it is that kind of book.

AMAZING BIT OF HISTORY

...This reads like an "alternate history" novel... with connections to all kinds of important people and events of the day. As one reviewer here said... I too was very sorry to reach the end of the book.

...Turns out that much of what I thought that I knew about the "failed" experiment was false. The camels *could* be managed. While horses and mules first exposed to camels often panicked... in short order the strangeness (especially the odor) and size (seemed like maybe giant predators) wore off. After a brief period the animals could all be kept together without the slightest problem and they could be pastured together as "friends" (except for male camels with other males during the "rut...")

...Camels could carry two to four times the load of a mule (males being larger). Camels not prone to "bad nerves or hysteria" unlike horses and mules. In the entire Southwest there was only one plant that the camels would not eat... otherwise the nastiest, thorniest bushes were not only consumed... but much preferred to tall green grass.

...Contrary to previous accounts, camels could handle stones on the terrain... A leather "shoe" handled the problem. Camels did very well on snow... (though on severe ice on a slope they might travel the worst of it on their knees) Where previous accounts did not get it wrong was the smell... (The camels in Lawrence of Arabia might look a touch strange to a Bedouin because they had been washed by the production crew...)

...American Naval officers came up with a way to safely transport camels on sailing ships, even in the worst storms. Other American officers came up with much better packs and saddles.

...The Arabs say that the camel was specifically designed by Allah... A study of their biology and abilities certainly reinforces the notion... Their bodies squeeze almost every last drop out of their food... little is wasted as urine... it is normal for camel urine to have the consistancy of syrup... Their red blood cells survive happily in conditions that would kill other mammals.

...Camels can travel at speeds up to 45 mph... and run at 30 for hours... Unlike horses they are not "fragile." In mixed commands the horses died, the mules sickened, and the camels prospered. Very little seemed to phase them (including, in one documented incident, a rattlesnake bite...) When the first team arrived at the Colorado river, nobody knew if the camels could swim... not even their imported chief handler. Turns out that they are powerful swimmers.

...Camels are not stupid. They often "pause for a second" to consider something. They are certainly not "unmanageable" if treated with respect by well trained handlers. But (like elephants) they never forget being badly treated by a specific handler.

...One virtue came to light in the very nastiest desert terrain... If the handlers allowed the camels their "head..." the camels could always locate quality water within 20 miles... this saved the lives of a couple of expeditions. Most handlers (military and civilian) came to be quite fond of their camels.

...Camels had little role to play in the American Civil War (though one was killed by a Union sniper at Vickburg...) By the time that the war was over the railroad took over the role of conquering distance...

...It was thought that the last of the feral decendents of the Camel Corps died out in the early 1900s but the last confirmed sighting was in some gawdawful remote desert area by a railroad repair crew in 2003 who took photos....

...More than half the experiment was done by civilians who had the camels on loan... or by a mostly civilian survey expedition headed up by a Navy officer... As to the truly amazing charge of the title... Well I won't give that away...

Lovely book,well written with real characters and real life issues

This book was something of a revelation for me; the everyday life and problems of people / dogs can be as engaging and entertaining as romanticised stories about impossibly beautiful, young and passionate characters. I was captivated by this book. Yes. I am a dog person. But, that would not necessarilly make me go all soppy over a story about dogs and broken hearts. This book, and the story, got to me because of it's realism and fearlessness in tackling big, ugly, messy human issues like; adultery, motherhood, selfishness and the not always romantic side of relationships. Kids vomit, dogs chew up favourite shoes and sometimes people are not who or what you expected them to be, and sadly even dogs get caught up in our human duplicity ending up broken hearted themselves.

This story doesn't promise happy endings, but it does show people facing their own demons and finding a way forward that is positive and even uplifting. Will Nat and John get pregnant? Maybe, maybe not, but you are left with the impression that they will be a family irregardless of being parents to a baby or their lovely Bertie on his bassetthound own. From the main character, Rachel and her storyline dealing with the thorny issue of a married lover, a tetchy relationship with her mother, gaining understanding about her deceased Aunt, Dot's multifaceted life, unplanned pregnancy issues for older women and allowing the possibility of a new love to blossom; the author unashamedly allows real life to take on a magical tone that gives readers hope.

I loved this book, and was gripped by the possibilities of life and relationships; be they between humans or their dog companions.

Get this book. You'll not regret it.

I really enjoyed this book. It is about a woman who inherits her aunts house and rescue kennels after her death. Dogs just have a way of bringing people together and this book proves it for sure. I highly recommend reading it especially if you like animals and books about friendship and starting over.

Finished this today and very much enjoyed it. Good story about dogs and the author captured their personalities very well, in addition to those of her characters. Would definitely recommend this one, especially if you like dogs.

This is not my 1st Pennyfoot mystery read. It's like a family reunion. Old acquaintances with the hotel owners and staff. Period elegance, southeast coastal English delightful setting, and of course multiple murders similar to Midsomer County. Only instead of mega-cop Barnaby, the local bobbies at Badgers End seem to need the sleuthing prowess of Cecily Sinclair Baxter, who usually intervenes, but in this story, is asked to help. And after promising her husband she was ending her investigative days. He relents, to again save the hotel, or Pennyfoot Country Club, as it's now called.

Murders from the "Christmas Angel" (victims left with markings) pile up faster than kisses under the mistletoe. While Cecily investigates, the inn's staff have their own activity going such as Gertie's beau, Pansy's desires, staff guessing the secret guests, disaster prone Phoebe's Peter Pan pantomime, a past lover/maid's return, Madeline's trances & powers, addle-head Col Frederick, and Mr. Baxter's reconsideration of an offer he once refused. The pace of sub-plots and murders take off immediately and never slow down for readers. It was beyond 250 pages till I thought I MIGHT have an idea of who-dun-it (probably the exact paragraph the author wanted a reader to begin to unravel the crimes.) Kate Kingsbury is noted for a style that does lead the reader up and down many false trails, this time snowy paths. That's a sign of a good mystery yarn-teller.

A fun murder sleuthing read in an era of trains, horse & carriage, with an occasional motorcar. A serene setting with Cecily, the intrepid and clever sleuth. If you've not experienced the Pennyfoot community within the Motel, this is as good a start as any of the series.

superb homicidal historical holiday cozy

As snow is on the ground in Badger's End, someone kills delivery boy Jimmy Taylor and shoemaker Thomas Willow. In each case, the culprit cut off a lock of hair and left behind a gold angel on their forehead. Constable Sam Northcutt surprises Cecily Sinclair Baxter of the Pennyfoot Hotel, when he asks for her help as normally he is annoyed with her sleuthing though he admits she has a successful solve rate (see Mistletoe And Mayhem). Her husband Baxter reminds Cecily of her promise to do no detecting this year.

She tries to nudge her spouse to free her from her promise, as the first telegram arrives, canceling reservations at the Pennyfoot. He reluctantly agrees to let her sleuth while lecturing stable hand Samuel to stay at her side at all times. As Cecily seeks links between the victims, more murders with gold angels as a signature and cancelations make this the deadly season of the Herald of Death.

The latest early twentieth century Special Pennyfoot Hotel Mystery (see Decked With Folly) is another superb homicidal historical holiday cozy. The "Upstairs, Downstairs" class difference just before WWI comes alive, as it always does in the Pennyfoot saga, in this exciting amateur sleuth. Although the story line starts a bit slower than normal as the feisty heroine must extract her self from her promise to her spouse, series fans will enjoy realizing she has come a long way with the inept Northcutt and her concerned spouse recognizing her sleuthing skills.

Another nice holiday gift for Kate Kingsbury fans

It is Christmas time again at the Pennyfoot Country Club and Cecily Sinclair Baxter is determined to enjoy it - she's even promised her husband that she would stop trying to solve murders. But she soon has to break that promise - someone is killing people in Badgers End, cutting a lock from their hair, and sticking a gold angel on their foreheads. As the victims pile up, people start canceling their reservations at the Pennyfoot. Cecily is determined to stop the killer before Christmas is ruined.

For several years now, Kate Kingsbury fans have been lucky enough to have a Pennyfoot Hotel mystery to read for the holidays and "Herald of Death" carries on that tradition. The first page sets the tone for the rest of the book - it gets off to a nice cozy start until the shock of the third paragraph - it is a wonderful way to start the book.

What I love about the Pennyfoot Hotel series is the characters, starting with Cecily who just can't help getting involved with mysteries (why she gets involved in this one is a nice touch by Kingsbury). Truthfully, Baxter is starting to annoy me a bit, I wish Kingsbury would tone him down a notch. Madeline is more mysterious than ever (or is she - she pulls off an amazing stunt towards the end), while Phoebe is even more obnoxious than usual (long-time fans of the series may be surprised at what happens with her pageant in this book and delighted at who stars in it). When the book isn't focused on the mystery it is mostly focused on the love lives of the household staff mainly Gertie/Clive and Pansy/Samuel (I like the Gertie/Clive storyline; I'm not quite sure how I feel about Samuel in this book). As for the mystery - it is certainly one of the bloodier cozy mysteries I've read. It is not graphic by any means but the bodies do pile up - quickly. The plot could have been tighter - I did figure out very early on who the killer was - but Kingsbury does plant some nice clues and throws in a red herring or two in an attempt to throw off the reader. There are some tense moments towards the end of the book as they work to trap the killer.

"Herald of Death" is another nice holiday gift for Kate Kingsbury fans.

 Timothy Masters served in the United States Navy for eight years before his wrongful conviction. He is currently semi retired and lives in Colorado near his extensive family. He is passionate about righting wrongful convictions and spends much of his time traveling. Steve Lehto is a writer and attorney. Licensed in Michigan, he was also an adjunct professor at the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Law for ten years. He has written several books, including Death’s Door: The Truth Behind Michigan’s Largest Mass Murder, and most recently, Chrysler’s Turbine Car: The Rise and Fall of Detroit’s Coolest Creation.

Conviction on the side of the law!

This was well written, I thought! Although I knew the outcome, I still did not want to put it down. And yet, this was the first time I heard the victim's side. Tim Masters was a victim in all of this just as Peggy Hettrick was a victim. Mr. Masters' accounting of his experience was genuine and heartfelt. The things they did on the side of justice were incomprehensible. He lost ten years of his life that he will never get back. The money, the apologies, none of it gives back the time that was stolen from him. His attitude and passive outlook are commendable and I admire his graciousness. The rest, Broderick, Blair, Gilmore, and others, should be locked up!

A great book about a horrible incident.

It's hard for me to review this one without judging what happened to Timothy Masters. He was accused of a murder he clearly didn't commit and was convicted because a detective didn't want to admit he'd made a mistake?!?!?! I know that kind of stuff happens more often than we know of, but it just killed me to read this story. Throughout the entire thing I just wanted to smack the detective and the prosecutors that were working on this case.

Having said that the story was really good. It was filled with suspense, I think it's because we obviously know how it ends, and all the major plot twists, but I wanted to know exactly how these things played out. With each new chapter I couldn't help but try to figure out what was going to happen in that chapter. It really made me not want to put this one down. I just wanted to keep reading because I wanted to know how this all happened. This one would have made a really good fiction book. Master's life had so many twists in it that I kept thinking to myself "I can't believe this really happened". But it did, which is so sad.

The writing was really good too. Everything just flowed. The writing was more like a conversation than a report or a listing of facts. That's a weird way to describe it, but it was just so easy to read, it felt so natural. I liked that Masters gives us a peek into what was going on in his head while all of this was going on. I can't really imagine going through what he went through, but having his "commentary" made it at least a little more understandable.

This is a well-written book about a horrible tragedy and how it ruined one man's life. It sickens me that this happened, but I'm glad that Masters had the courage to put his story out there. It was enjoyable to read and it brings light to a flaw to our justice system that likely still claims victim today.

Just a note: my copy was an ARC. There are supposed to be some pictures in the final release, these were not included in the ARC.

Triumph of the Human Spirit

"Drawn" is an easy-to-read account of modern bullying gone wild, an adult "Lord of the Flies." The legal and illegal machinations to cover up so many sins of commission and omission by so many is sadly true.

The books short, conversational sentences make it clear that this evil happened to an actual regular guy we can all know and truly respect for sticking it out through great dehumanization. It's a story of triumph of a human spirit.

Chapter 1

The great horned owl sat in the oak.

I could see the bird from my window as it huddled in the sparse branches, trying to protect itself from the snow. I longed to join it, to strip off my clothes and turn into my owl self, to fly free under the haunting winter moon, but the weather was harsh and cold. And Myst was out there, hiding in the forest with her people, waiting.

And somewhere, hidden in her mists and shadows, Grieve is there, captive, caught in Myst’s web. Can he still possibly love me? Can he still be saved from the blood that flows through his veins? How can I let him go, now that we’ve found each other again?

I opened the window and leaned out, glancing down at the yard below. The snow gleamed under the nearly full moon, a crystal blanket of white flooding the lawn. The Golden Wood—or Spider’s Wood, as I called it—was aglow as usual, with a sickly green light that I’d seen every night since returning home to New Forest. A thousand miles and years seemed to separate me from my former existence, although it had been only a couple of weeks since I arrived back in town. But in that short time, my life had turned upside down, in every possible way.

The wind called to me to come and play and I closed my eyes, reveling in the feel of the breezes lashing against my skin. My owls shifted, urging me to fly. The tattoos—a pair of blackwork owls flying over a silver moon impaled on a dagger—banded both arms.

Slipping on my leather jacket and gloves, I cautiously climbed out on the shingles, making sure that the snow that had built up didn’t slip, sending me sliding to the ground, but it had turned to ice. I scooted until my back rested against the window, then brought my knees up, circling them with my arms, and nestled as best as I could against the cold.

As I stared up into the oak, the great horned owl let out a soft hoot, stirring my blood. Over the past month, he’d taught me to shake off the fear of falling, to soar through the unending night turning on a wing, catching mice in the yard, while always, always, keeping an eye on the forest.

You are Uwilahsidhe. You are magic-born. You must keep watch for Myst, he constantly reminded me. The Queen of the Indigo Court seeks to destroy you.

I raised one hand in salute, the snowflakes softly kissing my skin, and he hooted again, a warning in his tone.

“What is it?” I whispered. “What are you trying to tell me?”

Ulean, my Wind Elemental, swept around me like a cloak, answering for him.He fears for you. There are ghosts riding the wind tonight, and the Shadow Hunters are out and about. There will be death before the morning.

More death. More blood. My stomach churned as I thought about the four killings reported over the past two days. One had been a child. All had been torn to bits, eaten to the bone.

I gazed at the forest. What were Myst and her people up to tonight? Who were they hunting? The bitch-queen was ravenous and without mercy.

There has been so much death over the past few days. They are terrorizing the town and now everyone fears them, even though they don’t know from whom they run. I leaned against the gentle current that signaled Ulean was embracing me. She had been my guardian since I was six years old, bonded to me through ritual, a gift from Lainule, the Fae Queen of Rivers and Rushes.

And they should fear. Myst won’t just go away. She is here to make her mark and conquer. She is here to destroy. Ulean caught up a skiff of snow and sent it into the air, spiraling around me.

I glanced back inside at the clock. Seven P.M. Another two hours before we were to meet with Geoffrey. Finally, after five days of silence, the Northwest Regent of the Vampire Nation had summoned us. Five days after we had rescued our friend Peyton from Myst. Five days after I’d lost Grieve. Five days during which the Indigo Court had rained hell on the town, killing eight people.

The owl hooted again and as I glanced in his direction, a shadow of movement caught my eye from below, over near the herb gardens.

Crap—something was rooting around down there. Not an animal, so what was it? Another glance over at the Spider’s Wood showed nothing amiss, but we couldn’t take any chances.

Ulean, do you know what that thing is?

A moment passed and then she drifted gently around me again. Not one of the Shadow Hunters, but I have no doubt it belongs to the Indigo Court. Myst is attracting the sinister Fae.

I leaned forward, trying to keep it within my sight.

I need to know what it is. We can’t take a chance on letting it prowl around our land.

Scrambling back through the window, I paused just long enough to slip on my wrist sheath and make sure my switchblade was firmly affixed. Grabbing my fan from the dresser, I slipped back out on the roof and edged my way to the overhang.

The two-story drop was problematic, but a couple of days ago I’d installed a roll-up ladder. I’d been out flying and landed back on the roof, only to discover that somebody in the house had thought I was off shopping and had shut my window and locked it. I’d been stuck out in the snow, naked, too tired to change back into owl form to fly down to the ground and come through the front door. Now, I had the option of climbing down, which was a whole lot easier than shapeshifting when I was exhausted.

I rolled the ladder over the edge and was about to swing onto the rungs when Kaylin stuck his head through the window.

“What are you doing?”

“Goblin dog or something of the sort in the backyard. I was going to check it out.”

“Give me ten secs and I’ll come with you.” He ducked back through the window as I headed down to the ground. A moment later, Kaylin was shimmying down the ladder to land next to me. The dreamwalker was far older than his looks belied, and he was far more skilled in fighting than I was. Having him at my back made me feel much more secure.

“Where are the others?” I hadn’t seen my cousin Rhiannon all day.

“Rhiannon is out shopping, and Leo is on a last-minute run for Geoffrey.”

Leo was a day-runner for the vampires. More specifically, he worked for the Regent, running errands that Geoffrey and his wife couldn’t do during the daylight hours.

“What about Chatter?”

“He’s in the basement, working on charms against the Indigo Court.”

“I thought the house seemed quiet.” I moved forward, cautiously.

The backyard of the Veil House was more like the back-forty. Filled with herb gardens, stone circles, and fruit trees, it lay blanketed in a thick layer of snow, and the rising moon set off a bluish tinge to everything around. We stopped, listening to the owl as he hooted again, his warnings echoing through the yard.

We were as quiet as possible, but at one point I stepped on a fallen branch, buried by the snow. It snapped in two. The creature, which had apparently been working its way toward the house, heard us and froze.

This way, Kaylin mouthed, circling around it.

I followed his lead, edging closer to whatever it was. We managed to slip behind a nearby bush before it could back away. There didn’t appear to be more than one, and we were able to get a good look at it.

The creature was about four feet tall, with a bloated stomach and long bony arms that dragged along the ground. Its head was distorted, elongated and elliptical, with longish ears. The eyes were wide-set and cunning. As it drew back its lips into a grimace, drool dripped from between its needle-sharp teeth.

“Have any idea what it is?” I whispered to Kaylin, wishing he could talk on the slipstream. It was much easier to avoid being overheard when sending messages along with the currents of air.

Kaylin cocked his head, his ponytail shifting slightly. “Goblin. One of Myst’s toadies, no doubt. If we let it live, I guarantee it will bring others. The dark Fae can get through our wards where Myst’s Shadow Hunters can’t, so she’s probably testing how far she can push into our land using her allies.”

“Kill or wound as a message?”

“Go in for the kill. If we just wound it, we’ll have yet another nasty enemy on our hands.”

I gave him a short nod, saving my breath as we burst out of the bushes and poured on the speed. As we caught up to the thing—the goblin was terribly quick—I pulled out my fan, whispered “Strong Gust,” and snapped the fan open, waving it twice.

A quick blast of air slammed against us—and the goblin. Startled, the creature skidded to a halt at the edge of the forest, looking confused. Kaylin dove forward, rolling to come up in fighting stance. He kicked it in the chin. As the goblin lurched back, I slipped through on the left side and brought my switchblade down on its arm, stabbing it deeply.

Kaylin fumbled for his shurikens as an icy gust of wind came whistling from the direction of the forest, and a shadow figure loomed at the border dividing the woods from the magical barrier we’d constructed. A glimpse of pale skin with a cerulean cast to it told us all we needed to know. One of the Vampiric Fae. A Shadow Hunter.

“Shit,” I muttered, steeling myself as the goblin launched itself at me.

The Shadow Hunter raised a bow, his sight intent on Kaylin. He might not be able to set foot on our land, but his weaponry could. I shouted a warning to Kaylin and waved my fan in the direction of the Vampiric Fae, whispering, “Strong Gust.” The arrow came zinging our way, but missed by inches.

The goblin landed on me and we both went down, rolling into the snow. I couldn’t use my fan in such close quarters, so I struggled to catch the creature by the throat. I was bigger than the goblin, but not as tough. After thrashing against his leathery skin, I finally managed to get one hand on his neck.

Gnashing his teeth, the goblin lashed at my hand and I pulled away just in time. Even if I didn’t lose any fingers, chances were good he had some nasty bacteria in that mouth and I wanted no part of any infection he might be carrying. We wrestled, me trying to force back his hands as he scrabbled to reach my face. One swipe of those clawlike nails could take out an eye. The stench of the creature was putrid, like a combination of gas and vomit, and his eyes were round and lidless.

I sucked in a deep breath and heaved, pushing with both hands and feet, and managed to roll on top, trapping him between my knees. I squeezed my thighs together, trying to keep the goblin from slipping away from me. At that moment, Kaylin let out a shout and I jerked around. A muscle pulled in my neck.

“Fuck!” The Shadow Hunter’s second arrow had grazed his arm.

The bolt had penetrated the heavy leather he was wearing but looked like it hadn’t gone too deep. Kaylin yanked the arrow out, tossing it to the ground, and dashed over the boundary line. The Shadow Hunter hadn’t been prepared for him to go on the offensive and went down, Kaylin atop him in the snow, a flurry of fists flying.

I turned my attention back to the goblin. If I let this thing get away, he’d be back, with reinforcements. I flipped the blade on my switchblade and paused. Killing creatures—even our enemies—was still new and did not come easy to me. I sucked in a deep breath.

You can do it. Steady. Aim for the forehead. Goblins are vulnerable in the third eye area. Ulean flurried around me, trying to keep the snow from blinding my vision.

With a surge in the pit of my stomach, I brought the blade down, wincing as it slid through the goblin’s head. New Forest had become a town of kill or be killed. We no longer had the luxury of allowing our enemies to live in peace.

I drove the blade in to the hilt. The goblin screeched, loud and jagged through the twilight, and then fell limp as a fountain of blood stained the snow red, diluting into petal pink. The scent of the creature lingered, joined by that of blood. I withdrew my blade, yanking when it resisted.

Another shout. I looked up to realize that—in my fight—I’d also passed the boundary line and the Shadow Hunter was on the run, aiming directly for me. I froze, but he merely shoved me aside and fell to the side of the goblin’s body, his face pressed against the creature’s wound.

As I backed away, horrified, he lapped at the blood, and then began to transform, his mouth unhinging like that of a snake as he shifted into a doglike monster, his jaws lined with spiny teeth. With ravenous fury, he bit off the head, chewing it, spattering bits of brain matter every which way.

Kaylin brushed his fingers to his lips and slowly edged up on the Shadow Hunter. He brought out a short dagger, serrated and coated in a magical oil. As he plunged the knife into the side of the Vampiric Fae, aiming for the heart, the oil encouraged the blood to flow and the crimson liquid stained the snow still further.

The Shadow Hunter turned, but I was quicker, stabbing his haunch with my blade and dragging it through his tough hide. Then Kaylin and I lightly danced backward, out of reach of those deadly teeth.

A voice echoed from behind us and I turned to see my cousin Rhiannon, panting as she stretched out her hands, a small red charm in the palm of her right. She whispered, just loud enough for us to hear, “Flame to flame, bolt to bolt, fire to fire, jolt to jolt. Lightning, let me be thy rod.”

All hell broke loose as a bolt of snow lightning came forking out of the gathering clouds, ripping to the ground to shatter the Shadow Hunter into a thousand pieces, as if he were a glass dish smashed on concrete.

As soon as the spell sang out of her body, Rhiannon collapsed and Kaylin raced over to catch her. I stared at the remains of the Shadow Hunter and the goblin. Not much left. Nothing to take home with us, except two more notches on our belt, and the hope that we’d be able to sleep soundly, knowing there was one less member of Myst’s court in the world. One less toady of hers to slip onto our land.

Kaylin shivered. He was bleeding through the rent in his jacket from the arrow. At that moment, I noticed a trickle running down my own shoulder. I glanced down. A puncture wound had penetrated my jacket. I slipped it off to see blood saturating my top. The goblin must have stabbed me with its claw. I hadn’t even noticed.

“We’re growing numb to our pain,” I said as we turned away from the carnage we’d just inflicted.

“We have to,” Kaylin said. “We have to learn to weather the battles because there will be far more to come before things get back to normal. If there even is such a thing as ‘normal‘ anymore.”

I nodded and looked at Rhiannon. “You saved the day.” The thank you was implied.

She slipped her arm around my waist and leaned down to kiss my forehead. “I just got home and saw the commotion from the car. Leo’s still in town and I don’t know where Chatter is.”

“In the basement, working with the charms.”

“Ah. Good. We’ll need them.”

“I guess we’d better get back on our land, before anything else comes out of the woods. We need to tend to our wounds and make sure they don’t get infected.” I wearily turned back to the house.

As we crossed the demarcation line that magically divided the Golden Wood from the Veil House, I couldn’t help but shudder. Like it or not, we were pawns in a war between two powerful enemies—Geoffrey and Myst—and we were doing our best just to stay alive.

NIGHT VEIL starts just after NIGHT MYST ends

The reason I picked up book one in the Indigo Court series was because the cover completely jumped out at me and as I was reading thorough the book I could picture Cicely being exactly like the cover portrayed her.

NIGHT VEIL starts just after NIGHT MYST ends. Grieve is pretty much a prisoner and under the control of Myst. Cicely is adjusting to all the things she learned about herself in book one and preparing for battle against Myst. Cicely in NIGHT VEIL finds out who her allies and enemies really are and you will be shocked at the revelations. I have not come across one book of Yasmine's yet that I did not enjoy. The Indigo Court series is mystical, filled with action, and has a great array of characters and creatures. The story flows perfectly through the twists that Yasmine throws at us. So much happened at the end of NIGHT VEIL that I wish I would have waited to read it until it was closer to book 3 coming out because Im dying to know what happens next. If you have been a fan of Yasmine Galenorn's or have read the first book in the Indigo Court Series NIGHT MYST you will not be disappointed in reading NIGHT VEIL and if you have never read anything of Yasmine's go grab book one and jump in.

Eh...

I didn't care for the relationship between Cecily and Grieve, which starts when she is a teen, although he has known her since she is a child. He is too old for her when he begins to court her at 15 and he being an immortal elf and much older it just came off as creepy grooming. I guess I like my romance heroes to be not interested in young girls and interested in adult women. I also was not fond of the fact that Cecily was regularlyabused by the creepy vampire dude, Lannon and everyone seems to stand around and let it happen. I was particularly disgusted with Leo. How could he work for people who would do that to her?

Eh, I like Yasmine's work but this one made my skin crawl. I'm not going to read anymore.. PASS.

Poorly written with bad charaterization

This is the 2nd book in the Indigo Court series. I got a copy of this to review through the Goodreads First Reads program. I really did not like the first book, Night Myst, but by the time I had read that book I already obtained this review copy. So, I thought "maybe the series will get better" and went ahead and tried to read it. I just couldn't finish it, I got maybe 100 pages in and it was just so awful.

In the first book Cecily discovered that she is one of the Fey who can shift shape. In this book her quest to save her lover, Grieve, from the hands of the Indigo Court continues. She has allies to help her, unfortunately one of their allies the vampire Lannan is requiring payment from Cecily in a way that is taking her down dark and depraved paths.

I read the first 100 or so pages of this book and just couldn't take anymore. This book is just as bad as the first book was, the only reason I even started this book was because I got it for review.

The language is incredibly awkward, the characters sound like 2D paper cut outs. The writing style is incredibly hard to read. The writer uses very short sentences that make this sound like an awkward kid's novel at times. Added to that the book just takes itself so incredibly serious. I am sooooo done with this series.

Seriously in the middle of discussing a battle with the Queen of River and Rushes, the two characters start discussing hummingbirds and how their life is sacred and how hummingbirds need to make sure not to fly into stuff as part of their survival..so everyone has trouble surviving you know? I am all like...uh...okayyyyy....not even sure why we had to digress. It was so weird I was laughing at the awkwardness of it all.

Seriously I was so frustrated with the horribleness of this book, I threw across the bed in frustration. I love my books and try to treat them with respect, but I do not like books that waste my time....was this book even edited? Okay enough ranting, back to the review....

Let's not even talk about the characters or plot. Cecily is abused by all of the men in her life. Her romance with Greive consists of her and him having rough sex whenever he can sneak away from Myst (the queen of the Indigo Court). Then the vampire she is working with Lannan, frequently abuses her physically, mentally, and sexually; her friends feel bad but what can they do? The whole thing is yucky feeling and the heroine is in tears as often as she is kicking butt or taking action.

I just don't know what else to say. I disliked the characters, they didn't come alive for me. The plot is pretty darn lame and the writing is horrible. The idea behind this world with vampiric fey is interesting, but it is executed poorly.

Overall I hated this book. I guess if you liked the first book this one is more of the same, so you will probably enjoy this one too. If you hated the first book (like I did) this book is more of the same and worse so you will probably hate it even more. Not recommended.

If you want to read an excellent book about the Fey check out Seanan McGuire's October Daye series, Kaylana Prices's Alex Craft series, Karen Chance's Dorina Basarab series, Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series, or Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid Chronicles. All of these books are much much better books about Fey than this one.

Good....but could have been better.

I did enjoy THE MASK alot, this was a good eerie novel dealing with reincarnation, it seemed obvious in the beginning, but like any Koontz novel the obvious lies within the unobvious, and when we are finally allowed to look outside the box, we are shown a bigger picture than originally thought. I did enjoy the supernatural element, but The Mask did have a few flaws that kept it from greatness: One being, that Koontz, never really explains the supernatural element that was tipping off the main charactors; were the spirits good or bad? Also, the book ended too abruptly,It was wrapped up in 10 pages. We never know the fate of the charactors, did they live happily ever after? But over all I'll try to stay positive and The Mask is a good early novel for Koontz.

The mask of mediocrity

I'm a Koontz fan...I can't claim to have read EVERY book of his, but I have read quite a few, and this was far from his best.

The concept was brilliant - a girl with no memory essentially falling into the lap of a couple trying to adopt a child, yet beneath the surface of the girl lurks something malignant and totally out of character with what everyone normally sees.

The execution of the book was somewhat poor, and the tension was, for the most part lacking. Perhaps more noticeable for those more familiar with his more recent novels was the lack of depth of his characters. In, say, By The Light Of The Moon or The Face, you really understand and come to care about the characters. In this book, however, they seem more like cardboard cutouts that are moved around to facilitate the author's needs. The ending was pretty abrupt also, and given how he had dragged everything else out, the incomplete and sudden end was sadly disappointing.

I don't want to give you the impression that it was the worst book ever written, but if you're wanting to read Koontz for the first time, I'd suggest a better one (such as the two I mentioned earlier).

From all the books i have read so far, I think none of them can come close to this magnificent piece of story telling. The mask is about reincarnation, and without giving too much of the story away, an ancient rivalry that goes back through the years. Very chilling and well written and as always, Koontz uses his knowledge of the real world to make the story stand out.

The light of Christmas Eve

`On Christmas Eve' is the 11th in the Thomas Kinkade series of Cape Light books . One nice thing, is that you do not have to have read the entire sequence of books to enjoy or understand this one. However, Cape Light is such a welcoming, comforting place that you should read the series. They are a sweet soothing read, especially for the holidays.
The people in the town have problems and faults, but they are, for the most part good and they act in a realistic manner. As the story progresses, bits of background and information are slipped into the story line to let a new reader, or remind a former reader who the characters are and what has happened before. The surroundings and even the smells are well described, so that you are drawn into the story, not just by the people but by the setting around them.

This new novel deals with two main stories, a runaway and a wife of the town curmudgeon who wants to take her in; and a divorced woman who might find romance. I wish there was a broader sweep of the town's citizens included in the story. This latest Christmas book seemed a bit lacking in including the story of the town and the different people who live there, which after all is a huge part of everyone's lives and is a focus of the series.
It is still an enjoyable book to read for the holiday season.

On Christmas Eve

I loved this book, along with all books, written by Thomas Kinkade! I read and enjoyed them faster than they can write the books! My husband bought me 11 books in the series and in 6 months, I have all 12 of them read and waiting for the next one to come out in the Cape Light series. It is a wonderful Christian fiction series of books, and when I finished each one, I could hardly wait to start the next book in the series.

Cape Light

The Cape Light series is wonderful and makes for great holiday reading. It is nice to read something to put you in the holiday spirit and you can relate to the story from your own life experiences.
