It's good to be back in Xy!

I stumbled across Elizabeth Vaughan's book "Warprize" when in first came out and instantly fell in love with both the characters and their very different cultures. I have to say, I was very disappointed when her next set of books, starting with "Dagger-star," took us to a different part of the world she created. I didn't care for the new culture or the new characters very much and only skimmed them until "Destiny's Star" took us back to the Plains. "Warcry" is even better--it takes us back to Keir and Lara, though as seen through characters Atira and Heath, and their efforts to create a new world that fuses Xyian and Plains peoples and cultures.

That being said, what about the romance? This book focuses on previous support characters Heath and Atira, and while the evolution of their relationship was enjoyable, it wasn't why I read the book. Truth be told, I think this series would be better off if packaged as fantasy with a strong romance, rather than a romance with a strong fantasy aspect, though I can understand why, for marketing reasons, they've classified it as romance (though the cover makes me shake my head and go, "Really?"). That being said, the sex scenes felt a bit out of place, as though the author wrote the book without them and then she or the editor or somebody looked over the finished book and went, "Well, darn it, this is a romance! It needs lovemaking!" I skipped over them and don't feel that I missed anything from the story.

All in all, a very satisfying story, though a bit confusing if you haven't read Keir and Lara's trilogy. I can't wait for the next book!

terrific romantic fantasy

Recently a Warprize, Queen Lara may be carrying the Warlord Keir's child, but knows she must return home to the Kingdom of Xy to claim the throne for herself and her heir. Heath has protected Xy throughout her perilous adventures on the dangerous Plains. He looks forward to seeing family when they get home, but fears for the safety of his childhood friend when they reach the city; as politics is literally a backstabbing betrayal activity.

Heath also tries to persuade Atria of the Bear warrior that they belong together. However, though she is attracted to him, she loathes the idea of living in the city as she prefers the plains. As they accompany the Queen and Keir home, they protect Lara from assassins and a treacherous schemer.

The latest Chronicles of the Warlands is a terrific romantic fantasy as Elizabeth Vaughn enables readers to observe the cultural and social differences between the people of the Kingdom of Xy and those living on the Plains. The story line is loaded with action, but it is the dramatic differences in outlook between Heath and Atria that makes the brisk tale so powerful, refreshing and entertaining. Sub-genre fans will ponder whether he can move his irresistible beloved female warrior to accept their love; while also protecting his friend, the pregnant Queen.

Mostly On Target

Warcry is the seventh book in the world created by Elizabeth Vaughan but actually is more like the fourth of the original series,"Warprize".set between the lands of Xy...the city dwellers...and the Plains...the roaming warriors. It would be best if you were to read the first three books in order to feel at home in the story in my opinion. Although there are explanations throughout Warcry, you would miss the character developments and world building from the first three.
I have to admit that I really ended up more interested in Keir and Lara's dilemmas than with the main characters, Heath and Ateira, I think that Atiera's resistance to "bonding" seems so very out of place in the world that Elizabeth had built from before. There weren't any examples of what she feared would happen if she and Heath bonded or married and I didn't feel it fit into what I thought a warrier would have worried about. Bonding was presented as a very rare and special relationship in the previous books and then all of a sudden Ateira made it into a completely different type of relationship.
Nevertheless, hope that Elizabeth continues into the joining of two completely different cultures with Keir and Laura's romance driving the story forward and then a few secondary romance to spice things up.
I am anxious to see what happens with Keir's desire to become a WarKing and with what will happen with the Warrior Priest's changing roll in the future. Maybe a way to reconcile Keir and the Warrior Priests?
Lastly the ending was really out of place in this book. It seemed like the last chapter was just added from a completely different story! Don't bother to read it and you will miss nothing LOL
If you liked the other books then you will most likely enjoy Warcry.

No Bones About It

The brand new A Family Skeleton Mystery series is a delightfully original entry into the paranormal "cozy" genre! Sid the skeleton has been part of the Thackery family for 30 years and Georgia Thackery's best friend since she was 6 years old. He walks, he talks, he reads, his favorite movie is The Nightmare Before Christmas, and he has a big heart...not literally, but so to speak. And he has no memory of his life before he became a skeleton.

Shortly after Georgia and her 14-year-old daughter Madison move back into Georgia's parents home, Sid persuades Georgia to let him attend the Mangachusetts manga and anime convention in costume as Lord Death. He seems to have a wonderful time, however, he sees a woman there who brings up uncomfortable feelings (not quite memories) of guilt and fear for him. Days later, Sid and Georgia discover this same woman dead in her home. While the police see the murder as a home invasion gone wrong, Sid & Georgia set out to discover Sid's human identity and what the connection was between him and the deceased Dr. Kirkland.

This is not another "shop" (coffee, tea, chocolate, bakery, book, quilt, knitting, vintage clothing, etc.) setting series. No recipes or patterns at the back of the book here. Georgia has taken a job as an English adjunct at the small Massachusetts college where her parents are tenured professors, so the primary settings are the McQuaid college campus and the Thackery family home.

The writing is breezy and witty, and the dialog between Georgia and Sid includes many puns and expressions relating to osteology. Even though Sid's abilities stretch the imagination a bit more than the usual paranormal characters, I love the originality in this book. I enjoyed the way the mystery storyline was pertinent to the characters, and not just Georgia and Sid being busybodies with nothing better to do with their time than interfere with a police investigation. Another element that appealed to me was the character development from the beginning to the end of the book. Make no mistake, this is not literature with a capital L, but I enjoyed the time spent with this book and look forward to the next in the series.

The Knee Bone Is Connected To The Leg Bone

A Skeleton In The Family is the first book in the Family Skeleton series.

Even the author says this is a little off the wall and I have to agree, but I loved it and look forward to more books in this series.

Georgia and her teenaged daughter, Madison, have moved back to the family hometown, where she has gotten a teaching position at the local college. Georgia is looking forward to catching up with Sid, who is a skeleton.

The Thackery family have "owned" Sid the skeleton for around thirty years and Georgia had named him Sid when they "rescued" him from a traveling carnival.

This book centers around Sid wanting to know who he is and how he came to be dead. Georgia and him get a lead on a lady professor that looks familiar to Sid and sneak into her house, only to find that she has been murdered. A couple strange events had happened at college and they are wondering if she was killed or if she was a victim of burglary gone wrong.

I admit, I had my doubts when I started the book, but quickly changed to loving it. And Sid has some of the best lines. They be corney, but still, they made me laugh.

Looking forward to book #2.

A Superb New Series in the Mystery Genre!

A five star debut...oh yeah! I truly want a Sid in my life! Not to mention a gal friend like Georgia...what am I chattering on about?

Well, Dr. Georgia Thackery, professional adjunct professor, and mother of one clever girl, Madison, returns to her family home (parents are on a sabbatical,)in Western Mass. Georgia has one sister, Dorothy, who owns a locksmithing company. Georgia is not the only adult in the house however, she has a long time friend (from age six,) named Sid who she relies upon. Sid has chosen to remain hidden from Madison due to the fact that he is a sentient skeleton. Yup, a skeleton that often lives in a closet...actually a favorite armoire in the living room, when he isn't resting in the attic, reading.

This story is a mystery about finding out 'Sid's' true identity. It quickly morphs into a murder mystery but is definitely compelling reading. Who is Sid? Where did he come from? What was the cause of his death? Why, oh why, does a local nearby college professor seem 'familiar' to him? Why is the familiar professor killed? And, will Sid become a tasty treat for an Akita dog?

These queries and more and excellently researched and resolved in this action packed and laugh filled novel. I found myself unable to put this novel down and it followed me about the house while cooking and cleaning.

We learn how Sid comes home to live with Georgia's family. I'm not going to spoil the plot as this character is completely credible and you even forget that he is not among the living due to well timed quips that had me laughing out loud. Puns, one-liners, worthy of past famous comedians such as Jack Benny make you think up ones for yourself! I adore humor in books, such as in author Jeff Cohens, and this novel won me over.

If you're a Thea Harrison fan looking for something in the same vein of her Elder Races series, stop right here. This is nothing like that. Instead, the Game of Shadows series is something much darker, complicated and non-traditional.

Honestly, I was terribly lost in the beginning. I was almost a third of the way through the book before I finally caught the rhythm and felt like I had an idea of what was going on. There was just so much information. But more than that, I think it was the various points of view, exacerbated by past life memories that made it hard for me to figure out who was the focus of some passages and what the relevance was. My confusion pulled me out of the story and as a result, it took me longer than usual to connect to the characters. Once I was about 90 pages in, however, the problem had passed.

The story follows Mary, a doctor, who has never really felt like she fit... like she was never really a part of the world. She tried dating, even marriage, but never found a romantic connection, or even a desire. She has had strange dreams all of her life about a group of beings who sacrificed their alien lives to track a fugitive to Earth. Each had a soul mate they were forced to separate from. And through the course of the story, she learns that she was one of those beings. They have lived multiple lives on earth, searching for their quarry, the Deceiver, and hoping to reunite with the other half of their soul.

As the story begins, a dark force is hunting Mary, and killing whatever gets in its way. She runs, almost straight into the path of Michael, the other half of her soul who has been searching for her for centuries. She doesn't know him right away, but it's only a matter of time before they reconnect and recover the memories of their past lives together. They must learn to know and trust each other again if they have any chance of defeating the malevolent being bent on destroying them both.

Once Mary and Michael find their way to each other, that's when the book found legs for me. After all, it's romance I connect to in Harrison's work. And I loved the dynamic between these two. Once I got to see Michael with Mary, I really appreciated having seen who he was before he found her. The contrast was what was so effective. I loved watching him come alive with her. The sexual element between them was great and I believed in the connection between them. It really was the best part of the book.

Be aware that this book does not have a finite ending. Think of it more as the opening salvo in war between the good guys and the bad. The story is clearly just beginning. And we still have a lot to learn, especially about our villain and the mysterious grandmother. Now that I think I have a firm grip on the worldbuilding, I think book two will be a lot easier to jump into. It's a shame I have to wait until 2014 to see what happens next.

This is not the thea i've grown to love- more urban fantasy than romance

It might be an excellent book but just not to my taste. I expected a new series but the same passion and romance as the elder series. It was dark and gloomy. Lots of death and suicide. The h/h dont even meet till around half way through the book. they dont even kiss till the book is almost over. I didnt feel the story was about them as a couple which is why i read romance books. The ending is not uplifting . the thing i thought mary was going to do for nicolas which would have been great , she didnt do unless it was foreshowdowing something that will happen in future books. I have no desire to read the next book which is great since i would have to wait a year. Please stick to the elder races.

too much whining

"Darkness Rising" has a paranormal modern day plot that focuses on 4 people: the bad guy, a sidekick, a man, and a woman. Basically, the man and woman have been reincarnated many times and in the process have been intrinsically damaged. Throughout the book, the focus is their problems accompanied with a lot of "poor me" whining. The man tends toward violence. The woman feels disconnected with reality.

This book is sold as a Romance, but it really isn't. The man and woman don't meet until more than half way through the book, and there are scant tender emotions. The mood is pretty depressing, and the plot doesn't go anywhere.

Thea has written some awesome books. This isn't one of them.

Wonderful Encore!

High School Show Choir Coach Paige Marshall has her hands full. She has just learned that two other high schools are performing the same number as her choir in the upcoming competition season. She needs to quickly replace that song, complete with choreography, with another before they debut at the holiday concert in just a few days.

Paige has also been selected as one of the soloists in a production of the Messiah and is rehearsing daily to prepare. She is so excited, but the man singing the tenor part is world-renowned tenor David Richard and his overblown ego is hitting all the wrong notes. When the tempestuous tenor drops dead during rehearsal Paige finds herself investigating another murder and finds out the tenor was certainly no choirboy.

What a wonderful encore to Murder for Choir. Charbonneau hits all the right notes!

The author combines mystery with a romantic triangle that reads like a marvelous melody. Should Paige be with Devlyn or Mike? The hunky detective or the talented teacher? Paige is extraordinary as she deals with keeping her current job while trying to further her singing career plus she is dealing with her love life, her students, and her boss Larry, and trying to catch a killer.

The story has layers and is full of humor. The characters just draw you right into their lives. It is easy to see the author is a performer but she is also a terrific storyteller. Her insight into the musical arena shines through this entire literary score.

Like cozy mysteries, you won't be able to put this one down!

I can't wait for the next performance. It must almost be time for the Show Choir Competitions to begin.

Murder, mayham, and..........song?

This is a great entry to a fun cozy mystery series about the choir director of the high school glee club. The heroine of this series is a talented singer who lives with her aunt and directs the glee club while trying to advance her own career as a singer. In this book, she gets more and more involved with her students while helping them get ready for a concert as she rehearses for her own performance. The performing insights in the novel are quite interesting. The author has a very smooth flow to her writing so this is an easy read. The mystery aspect of the story, while not overly complex keeps the reader interested through the book. The main character has two potential love interests and we get to know them a little better this time around. This story can be read as a stand alone, but is more enjoyable when read as part of the series. This series and this book in particular are recommended for all cozy mystery lovers.

Mayhem and Music at Prospect Glen High School

This a novel that fits very firmly within the accepted limits of the "cozy mystery." That is to say, we are presented with the standard tropes of the genre: a female protagonist, in this book, Paige Marshall who is employed as a high school teacher (sort of) while involved in the di rigueur (tepid) romantic triangle. In the course of routine activities, she stumbles over a dead body (of course!) Like all cozy heroines, Paige is convinced to her very bones that she, and only she, can succor the innocent and expose the guilty. The genre typically requires the cozy heroine do this with the cooperation of an astonishingly compliant local police force or in spite of their obvious wrong-headedness. In this book, however, the slightly novel course of making the police effectively irrelevant is followed. There is nothing wrong with formulas, and particularly with the cozy formula. The cozy genre quite regularly produces books that are genuinely entertaining in lightweight and familiar ways. That is very much the case here with "End Me a Tenor.".

Generally inflexible as the cozy formula is, it does demand innovation in some areas. Paige's occupation is one such area. She's a teacher. The cozy landscape is positively littered with teachers at all academic levels. Paige must therefore be an unusual teacher, and so she is: she is an aspiring opera diva, a soprano reaching out for the lowest steps on the ladder to Renée Fleming- or Joan Sutherland-like superstardom. In order to hold mind and body together while she inches up that ladder, she has taken a job as the coach of a high school show choir. Anyone who has ever seen an episode of Glee on television will instantly recognize the competitive, self-centered kids, the backbiting faculty members, the endless competitions, the general agita.

It was the operatic connection that made me snatch this book off the shelf, for I have an operatic connection myself. Paige Marshall (someday to be Italianized as Paggia Maresciallo?) is just beginning a professional operatic career. Long ago, while in my early twenties, never having suffered from the delusion that I was Enrico Caruso reborn, I wimped out of that difficult, uncertain and monstrously unforgiving career path and took a more-or-less honest job. Now retired and more than a decade after my kind of voice should have burned out, I have returned to my old avocation am content to sing supporting roles in about forty opera performances and a handful of concerts each year, while surrounded by young, ferociously talented men and women at about the same stage of their careers as Paige. And, yes, by the way, teaching music in schools is very definitely a default position for many of them.

This is the second volume of the Paige Marshall series. In the Amazon reviews of the first book and in earlier reviews of this one, a few reviewers have commented on author Joelle Charbonneau's use of language. I shall do so, too, but from a different stance. In the thumbnail bio at the back of the book it says that "Joelle Charbonneau is an entertainer. She has performed in a variety of operas, musical theatre, and children's theatre productions across the Chicagoland area." In "End Me a Tenor," Paige Marshall is regularly described specifically as an opera singer who, although she has done some musical theater and dancing, wants very much to become an opera star. To me, Paige does not sound at all like an opera singer but like an entertainer who has done a couple of operas, rather, in fact, as I imagine that Ms. Charbonneau must speak.

Here are a few of what strike me as Paige Marshall's verbal oddities:

~ On the first page of the novel, Paige tells us, "I'd gotten an opera gig, and my performance next weekend was going to be my big break." Well and good, yay Paige!, but it soon turns out that the "opera gig" consists of singing the lead soprano part in Handel's Messiah. I simply cannot imagine any opera singer I have ever known describing a Messiah concert as "an opera gig." While it would be a very welcome paying job and a nice ego-boost, opera it is not. Nor is it likely to be a big or any other kind of break, for it is to be a sing-along Messiah, a species of entertainment not notorious for artistic excellence. (That isn't of much import, though, since the sing-along aspect seems to have been forgotten around the halfway point in the novel.)

~ By the very act of getting a job in Messiah, Paige can be assumed to be a lyric or, less likely a coloratura soprano, but she never talks like one. Just once, I believe, does she mention working on a piece from the Mozart Requiem, and she never mentions the operas or roles she wants to sing, or name arias she is certainly carrying around in her head for audition purposes.

~ Paige talks about her first solo number coming after the beginning of Messiah by a specific number of minutes. Paige might indeed use such language to a musical illiterate, but in her own mind she would name the piece. In this case it might equally well be her first set of recitatives, beginning "There Were Shepherds Abiding in the Field" or, somewhat later, her first "air" as Handel calls it, "Rejoice Greatly, O Daughters of Zion."

~ Paige has an unusual attitude toward her art, choosing on more than one occasion to call Messiah a "show," something I've never heard from any serious singer in my life.. She also has a musical theater-ish reluctance to use the word "chorus" for--well--the chorus, preferring the not very operatic "ensemble" in its place.

~ Paige has an odd idea about the pecking order in opera. She clearly regards tenor David Richards, whose "End" is the subject of this book, as a very big deal indeed. Richards sings the tenor lead in Messiah and the one operatic role that he is identified as having sung is Don Ottavio in Mozart's Don Giovanni. Richards is therefore unquestionably in what the Germans call the fach of lyric tenor. Consider, however, all the big-name, big-money, big-shot operatic tenors singing today. Not one of them is widely associated with either Messiah or that wimp, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni. The last really big-name tenors whom I can associate with Richards' sort of music are the monocle-wearing Austrian Richard Tauber and the Irish-as-Cuchullain John McCormack, who both flourished about eighty years ago.

All nit-picking aside, this is a good if not great cozy mystery with no more holes in its plot than might be expected from anything in the genre. It is perfectly capable of speeding along a few pleasant idle hours.

I think it is worth a solid four stars.

Tasty southern treats are hiding in this book.

Scrap of Life Book Club Review: Some how I missed the first book by the author, Shellie Rushing Tomlinson which was Suck Your Stomach In & Put Some Color On! That book is now in my Kindle queue. If it is even 10% as hilarious as this book it will be well worth the Chick Lit read! When I picked up this book to read I didn't realize that it was also a cookbook! Such tasty southern treats are hiding in this book.

This book was truly and laugh & cry out loud book. It was truly made for women. I loved that she covered topics such as Raging Inferno Syndrome "hot flashes", big boned, SRC "straight running crazy" and "bubba whispering." Each chapter ended with "Tips" and "Recipes." The tips cracked me up more than the actually stories in the chapters. The tips were the "Thus Saith The belle Doctrine" and just were incredibly hilarious. A few of my favorite tips were "Thou shalt not give plastic surgery as a gift unless it has been requested,"Humor is a great Band-Aid, but thou shalt use respect lest it stick to someone's bobo" and "Carying matches in thy purse is considered a welcome sign of public consideration."

My favorite chapter was the last chapter "If All Else Fails, Laugh!" She pointed out that you can find humor everywhere if you just look for it. So no matter what the situation is, you can find something good in it. I thought that was a great way to end the book. This is a must for your summer reading list. Pick up several copies and pass along to a girl friend that needs a pick-me-up!

I lived in New Orleans, LA for 5 years so I really appreciated the Southern humor and way of speaking. It brought back a flood of memories (we left when Hurricane Katrina took over our neighborhood), good and bad. Some of which I wish I would have let myself see the humor in at the time. The recipes all look DELISH and I plan on trying as many as I can. I've already tried two of them.

& 3/4 Stars - It advances the storyline - I am crossing fingers for the next book

I did read this book cover to cover without pauses, but I kept waiting for that moment in an Eve & Roarke book that I just did not get. This book is a basic murder plot, with lots of subtext (I hope) for the next book. I am going to try not to give spoilers, I might allude to something but will not give details. If you are new to series, start at the beginning, for diehards you will want to read this, but there is nothing other than your own impatience that makes it MUST read today :).

Eve and Roarke are my fav's as some of you know. I read them the second they come out and I almost always 4 or 5 stars. This book feel like the set up for the next one. You know how a lot of the books recently have referenced that Eve would have had a promotion already but some people think she is a glory hound and others think she is too brash blah blah? This feels like it is setting her up for major career advancement.

They start by talking about how good she is @ spotting talent and brining that in, you know how she brought up Peabody and Truehart and then she kind of mellows, the things that would drive her insane, she still gets snarky over, but she she lets things go and delegates some of it. They also have a part that will make her a hero in the eyes of all New Yorkers, and lots of positive media bits with out looking like she is seeking it out. We are no longer getting the accusations that she puts her life before her career, in fact the judges sister in law that gets murdered wants Eve on the case. So instead of roadblocks this book has things streamlined.

I see big things happening in the future, and it did need to be laid out, it just was not this book. The character interaction was so so, nothing I found to be great. Very mellow book. It will not be one I re read, I enjoyed it and it was worth reading, maybe not @ 14.99. This seems more like a wait for paperback version. I rarely if ever say that about the J.D. Robb books. I personally could not wait because I think the next book will knock my socks off. Not disappointed I spent the money for the book, because I could not wait even if I read this review, I need to know NOW. If you are like that, settle in for a well written police book. Like I said this feels more like character development, I can totally see Baxter making LT if Eve gets a promotion.

The Ghost of Ghostwriters past

This was probably the first book in the series I didn't enjoy. Not because it is a bad book. Because its the wrong book. It takes place in the same place, the characters have the same names and... well, that is it. The whole thing feels completely wrong, like a painting the hangs just a few degrees off center and you can't really fix it. If you don't notice it it doesn't really bother you, but once you see it you can't stop seeing it. The dialog between the characters feels wrong (the banter between Eve and Peabody is especially noticeable), the investigating methods used are different (when was the last time the Dallas went looking for fingerprints to solve the case? or when was the last time Roarke had to do actual financial analysis rather than coming up with the magical answer 5 minutes after being asked the question?), the characterization is way off (like someone had a list of typical things this or that character does but no real insight into why. Simple example - Dallas eats more soup in this book than in all previous books combined. Yeah, the writer mentions how much she loves pizza (ticking it off the list) but the rest of the time she is slurping soup and can't stop singing its praises. And the support cast, that all important set of characters that makes these books interesting - where was it? Compare the time given to Whitney, Mira, Nadine, Morris, Feeney, McNab etc. here and in previous books. Bet you in previous books each of those got more "screen time" on their own than all of them had here combined). Hell, even the crime is wrong. In the previous versions we had terrorists blowing up NYC, cloning humans, inventing drugs... here the big evil is...GASP.... real estate fraud. Shocking how that doesn't really make you shiver in anticipation to read all about it. Is it more realistic? Yeah, sure. Are we reading these books for the realism? Not really.

Roberts is one of those truly amazing writers who can churn out books by the truckload and somehow that doesn't come at the expense of quality or consistency. Whether its pure talent and professionalism or the ability to delegate to the right people, you really couldn't argue with the results. Nearly 40 books in the Eve Dallas series and they have all been consistent in style, themes, characterization, world-building... and it has been my guilty pleasure to read, reread and always enjoy almost all of them.

That is because the plot of these books becomes obsolete at some point. You don't read them because you particularly need or want to know who the killer is, but because you DO know who the investigator is. Dallas, Roarke, Peabody and the whole crew of support characters are the driving force behind such long series and the readers' familiarity and affection for them is what sells the books and draws the glowing reviews.

The whole thing feels like the author, intentionally or not, went into a completely different direction than before. There is very little consistency in the writing and none in the feeling the book has. And I don't think it was intentional. They had their check list and included it all (Dallas loves pizza - mentioned on page 123, move on. Dallas fears Trina - mentioned on page 234, move on. Dallas sets herself up as bait - page 345, move on. Its all there, but it feels like patches sewn over something completely different).

This is not a bad book by any means, but it IS an annoyingly different book. Some people wouldn't even notice that and many of those who do notice wouldn't really mind. But I personally found it annoying as it stopped me from immersing in the book and enjoying it. Bugged me enough to actually sit down and write about it even though its going on 2 am here (apologies btw for typos and general grammatical inadequacy :) )

The ghosts of past ghostwriters (or Roberts herself) haunt this book and whoever wrote it. I hope the next one goes back to the good old for the sake of giving the fans what we want - more of the same, mostly.

It's okay, but could have been better

Someone is getting too laid-back in writing, and I'm not sure it's J.D. Robb. This book, like several recent entries in the series, seems to be either on autopilot or ghost-written. If Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb turns out one romantic suspense, two In Death futuristic mysteries, and a short story each year all by herself, that doesn't allow much time for rewrites and editing, so maybe the problem is a natural result of churning out pages. Roberts/Robb is a major player in publishing, and I automatically buy each new release. But this one falls a bit flat. The good news is, the Mad Scientist/Psychopathic Serial Killer is missing, replaced by an ordinary mastermind and murderer. The bad news is, the characters are falling back rather than moving forward. Peabody is speaking too much like Eve, Eve is speaking too coarsely, the futuristic touches (part of the charm of the series) are disappearing, and current fads are out of place in the year 2060 (someone wearing an "I Heart NY" shirt 50 years from now? Roarke working on a tablet?). Nice to meet new characters (Turney) and see progress with old ones (Trueheart), but Eve and Roarke's relationship seems to have reached a plateau, so the fireworks are missing. For several books, there have been many references to the Icove case and I suspect that the whole Icove mess will reappear in an upcoming volume. That's fine, but bringing it up over and over in several books is rather annoying. Enough show...time for the tell. I will continue to buy the In Death books, in hardcover, but I sometimes think the series should be wound down to a reasonable end. "Calculated in Death" is one reason why.

The world of the Nine Kingdoms expands...

First, since the order of these books can be confusing to those who aren't familiar with them, here is a listing of all the Nine Kingdoms stories (updated Jan '15):

Two Prelude short stories, found in anthologies with other authors:
- The Queen in Winter ("A Whisper of Spring" when Symon, the first king of Neroche, woos and wins Iolaire, princess of Ainneamh)
- To Weave a Web of Magic ("The Tale of Two Swords" where Mehar of Angesand and Gilraehen, --th king of Neroche, fall in love and the legendary sword of Angesand is forged.)

Miach and Morgan's story is told in:
1- Star of the Morning (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 1)
2- The Mage's Daughter (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 2)
3- Princess of the Sword (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 3)

Ruith and Sarah's story (which OVERLAPS Miach and Morgan's story in the timeline) is told in:
4- A Tapestry of Spells (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 4)
5- Spellweaver (this book)
6- Gift of Magic (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 6)

Runach and Aisling's story is being told in:
7- Dreamspinner (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 7)
8- River of Dreams (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 8)
9- Dreamer's Daughter (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 9)

So! Now that I've got all that hopefully stated clearly...

A Tapestry of Spells ended with Ruith and Sarah being separated, right after Sarah discovered who Ruith really was--namely, the youngest son of one of the most evil and powerful black mages history had ever known...and, what was almost worse to her mind, 3/4 elvin prince! Spellweaver begins only hours later, with Sarah, being just the daughter of a village witchwoman, realizing that she has absolutely no right to be feeling anything whatsoever for one of those high and mighty elves, even if he hadn't been a prince...which Ruith most certainly was. The fact that she has no magic whatsoever only cements the fact that her fond feelings for him really should be banished as quickly as she is able to manage the feat. He is clearly far, FAR out of her league, even if he won't admit it.

Sarah does, however, have the gift of seeing...a gift which puzzles Ruith and only adds to her fascination. To him, his heritage is more of a burden and curse than anything else...especially since he doesn't much like the thought that he'll have to keep living for centuries after Sarah's mortal life ends. And so he continues his attempts to avoid his magic and birthright. But reality presses in until he finally realizes that his magic is a tool, and he's got twenty years of lost experience to make up for. Events make it clear that if he doesn't learn fast, he'll most likely lose it to one of the many mages who would gladly claim his magic as their own.

The romance between Sarah and Ruith unfolds more in this book, though it is quieter and takes a back seat to the world-building and character growth. I missed the stronger romance that Miach and Morgan's story had. I still love this installment of Sarah and Ruith's story, though. Spellweaver focuses more on the unfolding of Sarah's gift and the discovery of who she really is. Her gift is one that made me grateful to see the world of the Nine Kingdoms through her eyes. So much beauty! ...running through words and souls and carvings of stone. ...dancing to the music played in the palace of the dwarves. And we get to marvel at it as Sarah learns to use what she sees.

Spellweaver also focuses on Ruith's struggle. Here he is, an elven prince with a library's worth of spells--including all of his father's--rattling around his poor brain. But it is precisely that knowledge that has caused him to bury his magic. It doesn't take Ruith too long, though, to realize that running from his past is childish. No one blames him for doing it when he was 10, but he can certainly do it no longer--especially since he'll need his magic to protect Sarah from those who seek her gift and to protect the world from those who seek his father's evil and powerful spells. But no sooner does he uncap his magic, then he realizes that twenty lost years of practice using it are not going to be made up easily, and his magic is about as unwieldy in his hands as a broadsword would be in the hands of a child. And all the signs are indicating that he's going to need not only all his magic and Sarah's sight, but also more skill than he currently has to best whomever is waiting for him in the far north.

That's what I love about this book. I love the challenge that Ruith is faced with. I love how the Nine Kingdoms world expands. I love the imagery and beauty and how visiting the Nine Kingdoms makes me look at our world a little differently. I love how Ruith is a curious (and humorous) mix of the hermit who lived on the mountain and a proud and glamorous elvin prince who can outfit a room in luxury with a few choice bits of Fadaire.

And I love the setup that this book gives for the finale (coming next year). I love the way this book plays out alongside Princess of the Sword (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 3) in the timeline of the Nine Kingdoms. I love that we have only a tantalizing bit of a hint about who is waiting for Ruith, and I love that the hint both ups the stakes and opens new questions of how? and why? I love that neither Sarah nor Ruith could possibly succeed in their task alone, and I love how Ruith just might be the ONLY one who can do what lies ahead.

I'm giving this one 4-stars as well, since 4 1/2 stars is not possible. This trilogy is not quite as good as Miach and Morgan's trilogy. It moves slowly and gets repetitious in places. But again, the beauty of the writing, the world-building, and the magic moments laced with romance make up for it and still make this an enjoyable book worth re-reading.

Now I just have to be patient all year long until Gift of Magic comes out!

When a book is part of a trilogy, do you rate each book on its own merits, or do you consider the entire trilogy in the rating? I honestly don't know.

I'm going to leave the above review intact as I originally wrote it. (At least for now.) However, I feel obligated to add this caveat: the final book doesn't fulfill what the first two (especially this one) led me to anticipate. I find myself reading this review and feeling disappointed because that the lead-up excitement I felt wasn't fulfilled.

Am I disappointed in this one now for getting my hopes up? Or am I disappointed in Gift of Magic for not fulfilling everything I hoped it would? Or should all the blame rest on Gift of Magic? I'm honestly not sure. I still love Lynn Kurland's writing, so I know I'll end up re-reading the entire trilogy again. I also admit that if I had picked up Gift of Magic from an unknown author, expecting to be disappointed (because I usually am--I'm very picky), I would have liked it quite a bit and been interested in reading more from the author.

But I wasn't. This is an author whose work I generally love, and this book led me to hope for a decent amount in the end of the story...and the end of the story didn't have it.

When I do re-read it (knowing how it'll end this time), I might very well come back and amend the reviews for all three. I don't know. But in the meantime, I feel compelled to at least add this note.

Next please!

I finished Spellweaver a couple days ago and it has taken me until now to process how I'd review it... Coming off the high of the first Nine Kingdoms trilogy with Miach and Morgan, I was disappointed in A Tapestry of Spells. The story, plot and characters felt too familiar - like it was merely a slight reworking of the previous trilogy with similar acting characters just different names. And in some ways I still felt that way with Spellweaver. There are a lot of similarities in the characters of Sarah and Ruith in comparison to Miach and Morgan. Both ladies have an aversion for magic (and mages) and initially don't understand/accept that they have their own power (granted for Morgan that was a great deal of magic and for Sarah we are still learning about her "vision" and weaving skills). Both Ruith and Miach shoulder great responsibility- with their birthrights that they have a hard time accepting (Miach) or a familial connection that they have a hard time reconciling with.

When A Tapestry of Spells ended we were left hanging with what was going to happen with both of heroes. (I will not give away that ending in case you have not read it yet.) The focus of Spellweaver is more on character development- we learn a lot of interesting tidbits about Sarah- some that I suspected were coming but others were an insightful twist. Spellweaver actually reminded me quite a bit of the beginning of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. There is a lot of time spent wandering and searching (here for Gair's spells and Daniel, in HP for horcruxes). The momentum and pace of the story is a nice gradual build- like the Mage's Daughter (the 2nd story in Miach and Morgan's series) there is not as much action- the major "battles" are being saved for the last installment. The romance between Sarah and Ruith continues to develop and flourish, in quite an achingly sweet and touching manner. Move over Miach, Ruith is a new favorite LK hero!! ;-)

I am quite impressed by LK's ability to interweave her stories. There is some overlap happening with the first trilogy- not so much so that anyone who has not read the first couldn't jump in on A Tapestry of Spells and Spellweaver and then move on to Star of Morning, Mage's Daughter and Princess of the Sword. (A very smart move to allow new readers to jump in at any time- since the same is true with her time travel/historical romances.)

Overall Spellweaver is an intriguing continuation of the story presented in a Tapestry of Spells. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed it much more than its predecessor. I was worried that this wouldn't be as enjoyable a series because it didn't start out that well... but I didn't need to worry. As I drew closer and closer to the end of the book, the thought of having to leave this world was depressing. I wanted to continue to live vicariously through the sweet interplay between Ruith and Sarah. I await most anxiously the finale... SIGH... next year. Once again Ms. Kurland has presented a lovely tale that is free from the smut that ruins/bogs down so many other romances. It is such a relief to be able to pick up a romance book and not have to worry about any unnecessarily graphic love scenes, profanity, or overly sensual language. I tend to veer to Christian romances for that very reason, just because I don't want to feel scandalized (or embarrassed- as I've gotten my mom hooked on these) by what I'm reading. I wish there were more authors like her...

Beautiful character building; Not much action

This novel is the sequel to A Tapestry of Spells (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 4), and the second part of Ruith and Sarah's trilogy. It's a slow-moving novel, but every page is beautiful. The characters do much thinking and self-discovery. I usually prefer more action, but found at the end that I was very satisfied that I took the day and a half to read it. It was tenderly written, and the ending might bring a tear to your eye.

The main objective in this trilogy is for Ruith and Sarah to locate and assemble the entirety of Gair's evil spells, then destroy them before any number of black mages can make use of them. The urgency of this task is all but lost in the much-described journey to self-discovery of both Ruith and Sarah. Hardly any details are spent on moving along the plot, and almost all spent on waiting to leave or taking that last good meal for a long, long time. There are some missed opportunities for action, even if the primary purpose for this novel is to prepare Ruith and Sarah for the action later to come. For instance, I wouldn't have minded reading more details about Ruith's rough practice sessions in the magic lists.

Nevertheless, what I loved about the book was the characters from previous novels that were developed deeper. My favorite is Soilleir, and I truly hope Lynn Kurland writes his own trilogy so that I can see him "wallow" in his longing, as Ruith predicted.

Ultimately, Spellweaver is worth the read as a beautiful story of self-discovery. I expect Ruith and Sarah's third book will move at a faster pace as the threads of their tapestry are tied together. For a supporting novel in a fabulous series, this is definitely worth the read, though not always exactly page-turning.
