Review
Praise for the Novel Idea Mysteries

“[A] smart whodunit filled with well-drawn and interesting characters.”—Richmond Times-Dispatch

“Cheer up—there’s no middle-aged malaise for Lila. This cozy debut, written by a pseudonymous duo, excels at describing bucolic North Carolina. Think Kate Carlisle for her intergenerational ensemble style or Mark de Castrique’s series for regional Tar Heel flavor.”—Library Journal

“This is a terrific Novel Idea Mystery with its contemporary literary crowd mingling with residents of a small North Carolina town…Lucy Arlington provides an entertaining thriller.”—Genre Go Round Reviews

“Will appeal to anyone who loves reading, especially anyone who loves discovering a new author.”—The Mystery Reader

What? You haven't already bought this?

How will your life go on? How will your reading have any meaning if you don't take the opportunity to read this book?

Lila Wilkins, is a gem of a character appearing in the third segment of this series (A Novel Idea Mystery), who continues to be in the thick of everything without even trying. A small town that has unique quirks and mildly quirky individuals is completely believable and is the integrated setting for the arrival of rival chefs ready to show off their capabilities. The Novel Idea Literary Agency has decided to hold a festival called the Taste of the Town to showcase chefs they have represented. The dynamics become explosive quickly and the face each chef presents on television is revealed as a mask for a variety of ego failings and vicious competitive history.

Immediately, it is easy to see that Chef Klara Patrick has an abrasive personality that acts like a neon arrow proclaiming her a perfect murder victim. Yep, don't rely on that. After very few pages, who wouldn't sympathize with wanting her dead but she is not the guest chef who dies in an unfortunate accident.

While Inspiration Valley is turned on its side after an accident is declared a murder (a great and unexpected weapon of destruction), Lila scrambles to help salvage the Taste of the Town and help her boyfriend Officer Griffiths find the killer. As she continues her relationship with each of the chefs, Lila can see the seeds of betrayal, anger and hatred that each person has for Klara but is at a loss why the victim was the target.

Plunging the celebration into more confusion another murder happens and all the suspicions leave Lila feeling more urgent to discover the murderer. A natural at investigation, Ms. Wilkins continues to ferret out critical facts by her friendly nature. The suspects easily talk to her giving her vital history and insight.

As each story is revealed, each hidden detail brought to light, we feel the frustration and continued feeling of danger the occupants of the town are living in knowing a murderer is still loose. Yet, as the masks continue to slip Lila sees the potential of motive and opportunity in those who are closest to the second murder victim all the while unknowingly trusting the most dangerous person of all.

The murderer is a slow reveal in this story but comes to head in an action packed scene.

Lucy Arlington continues to entrance the mystery reader but provides so much more with her rich and complete characters and a romantic turn that is thrilling and worth following in its own right.

I think you will be able to find a full view of Inspiration Valley and its inhabitants with her rich descriptions that create a integrated scenery and well portrayed contrast to the inner grayness the characters experience in the harrowing aftermath of the murders.

This series is blooming...like spices dry roasted in a pan.

I continue to enjoy this series...bring on Book Four!
By Cathy G. Cole
I continue to enjoy this Novel Idea cozy series created by the writing team known as Lucy Arlington. In Inspiration Valley, they have created a town in which all lovers of books, food, and the arts would love to live. It's such a perfect place, in fact, that the setting gives the series a bit of a fairy tale aspect, and it's one in which I love to escape whenever a new book appears.

The cast of characters is varied and well-drawn, and adding a group of television chefs with their quirks and egos increases the enjoyment factor. Lila Wilkins is at the book's heart, and her life is not a static one. We get to watch her son grow from boy to man, we see her relationship with her mother change, and her growing attachment to police officer Sean Griffiths touches on all aspects of her life. I particularly like the relationship between Lila and Sean; it isn't the usual one where the law enforcement man in the heroine's life frowns upon her doing her own investigating. Sean sees Lila for who she is, and he's willing to work with her instead of against her. It makes a refreshing change.

One of the best things about this series is that readers have the feeling that they are getting behind-the-scenes looks at what it's like to work at a literary agency. Not only do they get that here, but there's the added bonus of insider views of the television culinary scene. What are those celebrity chefs really like when the cameras aren't rolling? How do they interact with each other? Why do they do what they do?

There's only one thing that kept me from thoroughly enjoying Books, Cooks, and Crooks: very early on when Lila is giving the chefs and their entourages a guided tour of where they'll be working, clues to what is going to happen-- and who's going to do it-- are practically gift wrapped and presented to readers. However, with a series that has so much richness and depth in both characters and situations, this was only a minor annoyance. Bring on Book Four!

Literary quips add to the fun and mystery!
By Byron
Book three in the Novel Idea Series, finds literary agent, Lila, planning a cookbook festival in her town of Inspiration Valley, North Carolina. She and her other co-workers have their hands busy negotiating all the flamboyant famous chef's personalities. Friendly and sweet on the TV screen and restaurant floor, doesn't seem to be translating into even 'civil' at this festival. When one of the chef's gets blow up in a kitchen explosion, the trick becomes finding the murderer while keeping everything going as smoothly as possible. It helps that Lila's new love is a policeman for the town.

There are so many things that make this series fun and involved in literary clips. Shops and sandwiches are named after books and characters. Even the best ever romantic build up to a new dating couple is filled with poetry and music titles. Great timing, as I finished this book on. Valentine's Day. Then for a fun cozy, the themes of true and caring love are mixed in with evil obsessive love in great contrasting ways. Love of family traditions, parents, children and partners are cleverly woven around the motives that caused someone to bump off a couple of the Toast Of The Town's star chefs. Thoroughly enjoying this series!
