Totally hooked on this series!
By Brain Full
This is the 7th book in the Molly Pink crochet mystery series, and like all the others in the series, it's a delightful read. The story is filled with quirky and fun characters and situations, and as the story unravels (pun intended), pieces of the puzzle are revealed at just the right time to heighten interest and engage the reader.
Brief synopsis (no spoilers): Molly Pink is a forty-something-year-old widow who works as an Event Coordinator in a bookstore. Molly has two gentlemen friends, Barry (a detective) and Mason (a criminal attorney). Molly seems to attract trouble (as in murders of her acquaintances), and she feels compelled to solve the crimes. Having access to a detective and criminal attorney comes in handy, but, of course, she gets herself into trouble along the way. This story centers around a film shoot in a residential neighborhood and a murder that occurs there.
The characters in the series have become my good friends. I love spending time with them. Their consistent personalities throughout the series make them very real to me. I care about them, and I like to help them find resolutions to their problems (even if they don't listen to me). I cheer for them when they succeed.
The books in this series can be read in any order, but I recommend that you read the 6th book in the series (Behind the Seams) before the 7th book (If Hooks Could Kill). There's a gasp-worthy surprise at the end of the 6th book that you will miss if you read the 7th book first.
You don't need to crochet in order to enjoy this series, but it does add to the enjoyment if you happen to be a yarncrafter. There are three crochet patterns at the end of the book in addition to two recipes. I made the crochet patterns, and I particularly like CeeCee's Cowl. It's quick and easy to make, and is especially attractive in variegated yarn.
I learned about this crochet mystery book series some years ago from a blog of recommended books for Mother's Day. After reading the first book, I was inspired to crochet again, as the characters helped me recall how much I enjoyed crocheting. The books also inspired me to join a knitting/crocheting group, not unlike the Tarzana Hookers in the series--but, thankfully, sans murders. I follow author Betty Hechtman's weekly blog, and I have come to know her (she's a wonderful creative person, and nice as could be). Betty is currently working on a new series--the first book is called Yarn to Go and will be released in July 2013. I preordered the book on Amazon.
Here are all the books in the Molly Pink series (so far):
Book 1: Hooked on Murder
Book 2: Dead Men Don't Crochet
Book 3: By Hook or by Crook
Book 4: A Stitch in Crime
Book 5: You Better Knot Die
Book 6: Behind the Seams
Book 7: If Hooks Could Kill
I highly recommended this series for a light, fun read. Enjoy!

Flawed but Fun Yarn
By CJ-MO
Things couldn't be more awkward for Molly Pink. She impulsively invited her ex-boyfriend Barry, and his teenaged son, to stay with her while he recuperates from a gunshot wound and is now regretting it. Molly tries to stay out of his way as much as possible, going about her business as event manager for a local bookstore and getting together with the other members of her crochet club, The Tarzana Hookers. However, Barry knows how to tempt Molly into spending time with him. While on leave from his job as a homicide detective, Barry has been assigned a couple of cold cases. He lures Molly into agreeing to evening chats about murder over cups of hot tea. Then Molly and the other "hookers" get a shock when Kelly Donahue, the club's newest member, is murdered in her own home. Molly has always been known as the group's amateur detective, but now fellow group member Adele, who is dating a cop, tries to solve the case before Molly. Adele seems to make things worse and Molly tries to do some sleuthing on her own, but still manages to get on the bad side of "Officer Heather" who is the in charge of the official investigation of Kelly's murder.
"If Hooks Could Kill" is the seventh book in this series, but it's easy for a new reader to dive right into the story and catch up on the main players. Molly has a dream job as an event coordinator for a bookstore and seems like she would be a fun person to hang around with. She and her best friend Dinah get along well and support each other in times of need. Some of the other characters aren't as pleasant. Molly's co-worker and member of the crochet group, Adele, has always been bossy, but is completely overbearing and obnoxious in this installment. Adele walks all over Molly and the others and while they complain, they still put up with her rudeness and her condescending attitude. Adele throws out the occasional amusing one-liner, but for the most part I don't know how the other group member can stand to be around her.
Unfortunately, Adele isn't the only one who takes advantage of Molly's good nature. Barry milks his condition for all he can to try to get back in Molly's life. He is more mellow in this book than the prior book when his controlling ways were almost scary, but he still isn't my favorite character. In prior books, Molly's friend Mason seemed like he might be a good match for Molly, but he comes across self-centered and pushy this time. By the end of the book, I was tired of Adele, Barry, and Mason and was ready to have things wrapped up and over with.
The best part of the book is the humor. For example, Kelly's husband has recently opened the "Hollar for a Dollar" store. Throughout the book, Molly and her friends laugh about the off-brands sold in the store, such as "Uncle Len's Rice" and "Wiggly's Spearmint Gum", and I was laughing along with them. I also really like how the California setting sets up a lot of interesting sub-plots in the book related to the entertainment industry. One of the members of the crochet group, CeeCee Collins is an actress and Barry's son wants to be an actor. A main part of the story involves Kelly renting her yard to be used for filming a television show. This is a different world to me and it's fun to read about people signing their house up with a location service to be featured in TV shows and movies.
This starts out as a light, fun mystery, but unfortunately some of the characters become tedious. The main plot is interesting and the murder is solved with all loose ends of the investigation are tied up by the end. However, there is a major cliffhanger at the end of the book that really leaves the reader hanging. There are crochet projects and recipes at the end, and the book should appeal to fans of Maggie Sefton or Monica Ferris.

Get hooked on the crochet mysteries!
By Cozy Reader
Lights! Camera! Action! The television crime show LA 911 has come to Tarzana and is using some of the locations of Tarzana as cinematic backdrops, including the yard of Tarzana Hookers most recent member, Kelly Donahue. When Kelly turns up dead, Molly and her crochet group, the Tarzana Hookers, are devastated. With the police having no solid leads, Molly decides to investigate herself. It will take some great sleuthing from Molly and her pals to catch a killer before someone else ends up dead.
I've been "hooked" on this series since the first book, Hooked on Murder. The Crochet Mysteries center around Molly Pink, who is an Event Co-Ordinator for the bookstore, Shedd & Royal Books and More. Shedd & Royal Books is pretty unique in that it sells books and yarn. That's right. And the bookstore is the base for the Tarzana Hookers, the local crochet group, which Molly is a member of.
For me, it's been a great reading journey with the Tarzana Hookers watching Molly crochet her first "square" and grow and develop friendships and relationships in Tarzana. It's always a delight to pick up the next book in this series and If Hooks Could Kill was definitely no exception.
I really liked the mystery surrounding the newest member, Kelly. It seems that she's being a little "cagey" about showing her crochet work, and this mystery deepens when she turns up dead. The murder mystery definitely kept me on my toes, as I tried to solve the mystery.
If Hooks Could Kill was another great instalment in this series. This series keeps getting better and better, and if you haven't started it yet I strongly recommend starting from the first book, Hooked on Murder, as this is definitely one series you wanted to get "hooked" on from the first book!
