From Booklist
Hyzy’s White House executive chef Olivia Paras puts in another appearance. She has just become comfortable with one First Lady when the vicissitudes of the American electoral process install a new chief executive in the West Wing. During the general tumult surrounding Inauguration Day, a box of chicken wings from a popular restaurant chain suddenly appears in the White House kitchen. Shunted off to staffers, the wings promptly sicken them. When it becomes apparent that these chicken wings were meant to surreptitiously poison Abigail and Josh, the presidential children, the Secret Service moves into high gear to uncover the mystery, and matters quickly spread far beyond the White House mess. Paras fears for her professional future when the neophyte First Lady holds her responsible for this threat to her offspring. So it’s up to Paras to get to the root of the mystery. --Mark Knoblauch

Reading with Tequila
By Jennifer Sicurella
Buffalo West Wing is the fourth book in the White House Chef Mystery series, but it's the first I've read. Culinary cozies are a favorite of mine. I love the cooking, the menus, and the descriptions of the foods. Buffalo West Wing did not disappoint. It included three very different menus at the end of the book, each tying nicely different scenes in the book.

I particularly loved that Buffalo West Wing, and I'd assume the previous books in the series as well, mixes something most of us know at least the basics of (cooking) with a less familiar topic. Life in the White House, particularly behind the scenes, is something I never much considered and was delighted to find how truly interesting it is. The different procedures relating to security, especially how it relates to every aspect of the way a White House staffer does their job, is fascinating.

The mystery in Buffalo West Wing was puzzling and built to a unexpected and thrilling conclusion. Olivia Paras makes a wonderful amateur sleuth and has a valid reason to be involved in the mystery and its investigation, which is a big plus.

This was an exciting read. It kept me on the edge of my seat and often made me feel rather hungry. Buffalo West Wing has certainly peaked my interest and I'm anxious to go back and read the previous novels in the series.

Tasty with Terrorists
By Cindy Chow
A new incoming administration brings not only the stress of a new President, but a new staff, and even more terrifying for a chef (just watch Top Chef), a family with notoriously picky school-age children who aren't shy about voicing their opinions about their food.

On the first day that the White House welcomes the new President and his family Ollie notices an unauthorized delivery of the children's favorite meal, Buffalo Wings. Despite being called paranoid (how could anything dangerous get past all the security?) and disappointing both the children and the First Lady, Ollie refuses to serve the Wings and orders them to be thrown out. When it's discovered that the wings were indeed poisoned and led to an attempted hostage situation, Ollie is sworn to secrecy by the Secret Service which unfortunately leaves a poor impression on the First Family. The arrival of a new personal chef requested by the First Lady has Ollie fearing for her job and navigating the nasty political rumors surrounding her kitchen.

Who knew the politics of running the White House kitchen would be as complicated and precarious as the that in the Oval Office? With her ex-boyfriend running the investigation and a new interest arriving to help, Ollie's personal life is as tenuous as her professional one.

Hyzy's White House Chef mysteries continue to entertain as they not only provide complicated, politically-themed plots but also allow a fascinating glimpse into the complicated machinations that are involved in producing meals for both the president and the White House functions. Ollie herself has become much more confident in both her chef skills and her detection insights. I love these mysteries that are tasty, insightful, humorous, and entirely original. Here's to hoping for the next installment of this series that is both political and delectable.

A MUST READ FOR EVERY MYSTERY LOVER!!!
By Lori Caswell/Dollycas
In this edition a new family, including two children, are welcomed to the White House, but the transition did not go smoothly by any means, especially between the White House Kitchen Staff and the new First Lady. In fact, it only took a few days for her to bring in their own personal family chef to prepare the family meals. The new chef believed he was hired to be the new executive chef of the entire White House, and was very disappointed to learn that Ollie (Olivia Paras) would retain her position but her load would be lightened as she would no longer be preparing the family meals. To say the kitchen was tense is an understatement. Adding to the stress was a package of Buffalo Wings delivered for the children's first night in their new home, but because the package did not go through proper channels Ollie could not serve them to the children. This was not well received by the First Lady and Ollie believes her days as White House Chef are numbered.

Unfortunately some staff ate the wings and became terribly sick. It is then the Ollie and certain secret service agents start to put together that the family was in danger, but they must keep mum about their suspicions to keep the first family safe and determine if they have someone on the staff working with the group targeting the First Family.

I absolutely positively loved this book, just as I did the other books in this series. We get a look at what goes on behind the scenes at the White House. Julie Hyzy did an exhaustive amount of research and you can see it in her writing. She takes us to a place you can't even see on a tour and divulges the inner workings, it is quite fascinating.

I immediately fell in love with Ollie, Cyan, Bucky and Henry. The new First Family with children added to the mix, brings in a whole new element to the story and the White House, the same way the Obama girl's have done in real life. I was touched by the Wisconsin reference, even though it was the location of a prison. The story could definitely be a "ripped from the headlines" saga. I understand how closely guarded our President's family is, and why the protocols are in place. This story is an edge of your seat mystery but also an excellent example of why the protocols are in place and what a dangerous world we live in today.

Julie, I am so glad I started this blog and found your marvelous work. Those nice little cliffhangers always leaving me wanting more. All the White House Chef Mysteries are a pure delight and I give all 4 books 5 stars and consider them a must read for every mystery lover!!!!

If You Love Betty and Animals, You'll Love This Book!
By Sylviastel
Betty White has been a lifelong animal lover. She is also best known for comedic, genius, witt and humor along with her acting talents. Betty White is a national treasure in the entertainment field. At almost 90 years old, Betty White is better than ever.

This book is about the loves of her life at the Los Angeles Zoo. If you're planning to visit the Los Angeles area, you might want to add the Los Angeles Zoo on your list of attractions. You might see Betty there visiting her friends. She is a supporter of the zoos existence all over the country. If you have a zoo in trouble, call Betty and she'll come to the rescue.

This book argues for the zoos existence as conservation and preservation of endangered animals and species. Betty loves all the animals there and has an all-access pass to the zoo itself. The pictures in this book are colorful and show Betty's spirit. She spends a lot time at the Los Angeles Zoo. It's her home away from home.

This book is not so much reading as it is seeing pictures and some writing to express the history. It's not a difficult read but it's worth reading. It's great for Betty White fans and animal enthusiasts to see the positives of zoos like the Los Angeles and others around the world in keeping the animals there for our enlightenment.

With new material- the gripping war memoir by a young veteran.

With new material about Ryan Conklin's second tour in Iraq, An Angel from Hell is a gritty, blunt, sometimes laugh-out-loud Iraq war memoir from the grunt's perspective. This is an edgy, candid report from the front lines and a captivating coming-of-age story by a young veteran and former cast member of The Real World: Brooklyn. With stunning candor and wisdom beyond his years, Ryan Conklin gives voice to a complex and life-changing experience for his generation.

From Booklist
For someone best known for his appearance on MTV’s Real World: Brooklyn, Conklin comes off as refreshingly clearheaded in this straightforward military memoir. Prior to his reality-show stardom, Conklin enlisted in the army at 17, eventually finding a place in the decorated Rakkasans regiment, patrolling the streets of Tikrit, Iraq. Ploddingly sequential in stretches, the book proves Conklin is no wordsmith and not especially good at conveying texture. But he’s disarmingly earnest and equipped with a razor-sharp memory—his depictions of trying to get a glimpse of Saddam Hussein, interacting with Iraqi youth, staving off crushing boredom, and despairing at the ineptitude of the “Keystone Cops” (aka the Iraqi army) are all extensively cataloged. Isolated moments of rage—as when Conklin sees an image of the 9/11 attacks on an Iraqi citizen’s cell phone—bring him into focus as a flawed hero, but this book will be of greatest use to readers seriously considering enlisting. As Conklin makes quite clear, it is a job equal parts heroic quest and “suckfest.” --Daniel Kraus

Review

From the Inside Flap
Praise for "An Angel From Hell"

"This war memoir is different from any other. It is as real as it gets. Ryan A. Conklin has written a brutally honest, exciting, and heartfelt account of life as a turret gunner during the year of the most intense combat in Iraq. Conklin brings the reader as close as you can get to combat without walking into a recruiter's office. An Angel From Hell is a gripping story of patriotism, camaraderie and sacrifice . . . More than anyone else in America, Conklin has become the face of the Iraq War veteran. If you care about your country, get this book."

- Paul Rieckhoff, founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America and author of Chasing Ghosts

"Just as Generation Kill shows the unvarnished truth of the Iraq invasion, An Angel from Hell portrays the grim reality of Iraq's condition during the 2005-06 horror years in Tikrit. A candid, humorous, and tragic memoir from a genuine American soldier about 'the real world' of war."

- David J. Danelo, author of Blood Stripes: The Grunt's View of the War in Iraq

Great military perspective
By A. Gentry
I received this book on the 7th and finished it the same night. I thought the book was well written from our perspective. I am an army medic and was attached to Ryan's unit when I was deployed. I thought the way Ryan covered the terror that we go through and how we react to all of these situations was spot on. Everyone goes through their own personal hell while deployed and this just showed how some of us deal with the stress. I congratulate Ryan on taking his love for the army and his brothers to the next step. I thought this book was very well written from a personal perspective. Ryan's passion for writing shows in his pages about how he feels for his new found family on good days and bad days. A definite read for anyone who served with him and a very good starter from people who are considering this line of work. It can be an eye opener for the average person.

A great, captivating honest read
By Daniel J. Rich
I began reading An Angel From Hell Tuesday afternoon and finished it Tuesday evening. The book was a page turner that pulled no punches and made no apologies for honestly and explicitly covering gritty subjects like the aftermaths of IED and suicide bomber attacks. Easily on par with Stephen Ambrose's works, but with an added degree of authority thanks to the author's having been there and done that. A great book for those who want a look at the post-invasion occupation of Iraq through the eyes of one self-proclaimed grunt. Hopefully there will be a sequel covering Ryan's second deployment to Iraq.

Great Military Book.
By Eric Lowman
This is one of the most realistic, honest military books you will ever read. As I read this book I was struck with the idea that it seemed like Mr. Conklin was sitting next to me telling me his story. This is an honest, brutal memoir, that is extremely hard to put down. I loved every page of the book. For those of us who never served in the military, it gives us an authentic idea of what it is like to be on the front lines with America's finest.

Like the police, Nick is baffled: Why would anyone kill such an apparently gentle soul?

“[Felix Francis] has one priceless advantage. He couldn’t have had a better teacher.”—The Washington Times

“A suspenseful read. Francis aficionados will hope that Felix chooses to carry on the family tradition on his own.”—Publishers Weekly on Crossfire

About the Author
Felix Francis is the younger of Dick Francis’s two sons. Over the last forty years Felix assisted with the research of many of the Dick Francis novels, not least Twice Shy, Shattered, and Under Orders. Since 2006, Felix has taken a more significant role in the writing, first with Dead Heat and then increasingly with the bestsellers Silks, Even Money, and Crossfire, all father-son collaborations. He lives in England.

The Francis Family Fiction Factory lives on with a Gamble & gusto
By Sharon Isch
In an interview with second son Felix that I read online while waiting for this, his first solo thriller, to arrive from Amazon, I learned that the Dick Francis mysteries have always been a family affair, with Dick (the late Queen Mother's former jockey) creating the plots, his wife doing much if not most of the writing and second son Felix, the science teacher, contributing the tech aspects and other off-the-racetrack story elements. After Mrs. Francis died in 2000, Dick called it quits. When, after several years, the cry for more from readers and publishers had failed to die down, Felix gave up his teaching career to join "the family business" full time, the annual Dick Francis thriller was reborn and the second son's secondary byline began appearing on the book jackets. Now Dick is gone and the last surviving collaborator is going it alone for the first time. So how's he doing? Spectacularly well, I'd say.

That wasn't my take on it at first. The first couple dozen pages or so, involving an execution-style murder at the Grand National, seemed sort of same old/same old. But once the tale left the track and jumped into the world of international internet gambling, Bulgarian hit men and independent financial advisors (the current profession of our hero, a former jockey who'd broken his neck near the finish line a few years ago and could never ride again), we were off to the races with a fresh, complex and cleverly crafted nail-biter of a thriller. "Couldn't put it down" has become such a cliché on these pages and I'm a bit embarrassed to see myself using it, except that it really and truly does apply here for me and I suspect it will do the same for you.

The Francis family business seems to be in very good hands indeed.

This is a very good book - what a relief!
By Amazon Customer
Normally I wouldn't have purchased a book so recently published that had been written by someone, even a son, taking over a series but the reviews this book has received convinced me otherwise. The book is well written, fast paced, interesting, and a lot like Dick Francis' books. Identical? No, but really close with that same hint of terseness, the same kind of tough-minded protagonist, and the same sort of bad guys that I've enjoyed for long in this series. Several times in the book I was really reminded of Dick Francis' earlier books - which were also the ones I enjoyed the most. Felix Francis is an enjoyable author in his own right and I hope to continue reading this series for years.

Felix hits his stride
By Elizabeth Chamberlin
Entertaining, suspenseful, and satisfying. I have found all the novels produced by the son since the death of Dick Francis acceptable, but this one truly attains the previous high standard. Practically a lifelong fan, I eagerly await the next.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In this engrossing steampunk adventure, paranormal romance author Brook (Demon Blood) uses detailed descriptions and an impressive imagination to create a world where people can be part machine but all heart. It's been nine years since the Horde, an oppressive empire from Asia, were run out of England. However, detective inspector Lady Wilhelmina Wentworth will never be able to escape their cruelty: her mother was raped during the invasion, and Mina is half Horde. Mina crosses paths with the revered Iron Duke Rhys Trahaearn, a former pirate captain who was instrumental in fighting the Horde, when a dead body is tossed on his estate. What begins as lust sparks into full-blown romance as the two learn more about the nefarious Black Guard and catch a murderous madman. Airships, zombies, nanotechnology, outlandish secondary characters, and a complicated heroine-who goes from believing "Dead people of all sorts were more tolerable than most of those living" to being willing to love-make for a complex, gripping read.

From Booklist
Brook jumps ship from her Guardians urban fantasy novels (Demon Blood, 2010) to a steampunk series mixing the British Regency period with the Industrial Revolution gone mad. During the celebration of the Iron Duke’s defeat of the Horde in England, a body is dropped from an airship onto his London doorstep. Detective Inspector Lady Mina Wentworth is assigned the case to find out who the dead man was and who killed him. Intrigued upon meeting her, Rhys Trahaearn, now Duke of Anglesey known as the Iron Duke, invites himself along on her investigation. So begins an adventure reminiscent of an action-packed video game complete with mechanical oddities, from metal eyes and human limbs to a killer kraken plaguing the seas. Dirigibles, blacksmith shops, contraband bazaars, and clipper ships become the backgrounds for Rhys and Mina’s blossoming love affair. With adept writing and a flair for creating believable worlds, Brook’s first in the Iron Seas series showcases her masterful storytelling. --Pat Henshaw

Set sail upon the Iron Seas - Brook's new steampunk series is a winner
By melindeeloo
Adventure, mystery, pirates in the air and on the sea, zombies, wonderful characters and weird steampunk technology, there is so much going on in the Iron Duke that there is no way a simple plot summary could possibly do this book justice.

The Iron Seas world that Brook has created is fascinating - an alternate Victorian/Regency society which is still struggling to recover from years of enslavement by Mongol invaders. A familiar-yet-not world in which some of the conventional values of the time are still in force but with just enough of a twist added by what the people have survived under their oppressors - and still endure due to the technology that shaped their lives - to create a truly unique framework for a story which is 'smart' and so much more than a romance.

I really loved interactions between the leads: dangerous larger than life former pirate and national hero Rhys Trahaern and Detective Inspector Mina Wentworth, the brave and intelligent woman whom Rhys is determined to possess. However, the relationship between the pair in the Iron Duke isn't as romantic as some of Brook's other romances. And several of their sexual encounters aren't as much about romance as they are about character discovery or moving the relationship between the Mina and Rhys in a new direction - and one in particular goes to an uncomfortable place while doing it - so there wasn't quite as much steamy payoff for my inner romance reader.

In addition to the leads several of the supporting characters are standouts. I am hoping to see a great deal more of swashbuckling airship captain Lady Corsair, the savvy Lord Scarsdale, and adventurer Achimedes Fox in future books.

Steampunk is a bit of a widening of horizons for me from the more contemporary settings and paranormal elements of my normal urban fantasy and paranormal romance, but I actually ended up quite enamored with Brook's Iron Seas series starter - so that much that I read it twice back-to-back (gasp - I rarely reread). Iron Duke is definitely going on my very small keeper shelf and I'll be anxiously waiting for the next one, Steel Heart.

If you are looking for more of Brook's Iron Seas, or just want to take a dip into Brook's fascinating steampunk world before trying Iron Duke, you may want to check out the prequel "Here There Be Monsters" in the Burning Up (Berkley Sensation) anthology - it is also quite good and works well as a standalone.

The "good" rape
By hwm
Even more than this novel, the overwhelmingly positive reactions to it bothered me. After some time I realized, that if I wanted my concerns voiced, I would have to write a review myself. So here it is.

THE IRON DUKE is the start to a steampunk romance series by Meljean Brook, who is better known for her paranormal Guardian series. It's my first book by this author and probably my last. If I could split the steampunk from the romance, I'd give the former 4.5 stars and the latter zero. The novel is an odd mixture of originality and romance clichés, subtle socio political nuances and romantic sledgehammer tactics. The character of the hero and his "good" rape of the heroine were deeply problematic in my eyes.

The "good" rape is a cliché often found in old school romances, where the heroine is not raped by a villain, but by her hero. The consent of the heroine is substituted by the (unconscious) consent of the reader, who knows that there is going to be a Happy End between rapist and victim eventually. The rape is used as a turning point in the story. Starting with this event everything that stands between a romantic and/or sexual relationship between hero and heroine is moved aside. The heroine gets over the trauma quickly and is allowed to live out her sexuality. In a way this ultimate loss of power empowers her. Since the power to say "no" was taken away from her, she might as well say yes and enjoy it. The victim also gains power over her rapist, who has to repent his act of sexual violence in order to become an ideal lover and/or husband and thus fulfill the HEA recquirement. On top of it the hero always has some (not) good excuses. Intoxication (substance abuse or some magical quirk), misinformation (she wasn't an adulteress, she was a virgin!) and an horrible childhood are the most popular ones. After all the heroine and the reader have to forgive him his rape and grovelling alone doesn't do it.

Rhys Trahaearn is the Iron Duke, a pirate turned war hero. Socially untouchable and though a mutation physically superior he is he archetype of the dark, tormented alpha hero. Already on page 36 he confesses "his urgent need to possess" Mina. "Take", "possess", have" and "mine" are his favourite words.
On page 64 Mina analyses the danger she finds herself in: "So this is how it would be? When pirates took over a ship, they usually gave the crew a choice between keeping their positions under a new captain, abandonment, or death. What choice would he give to her? She accepted his offer, or he ruined her family? Or would he simply rape her here? What could Trahaearn do to her family that he Horde hadn't already done? Nothing. And her family had always fought back, always, survived. The only danger he posed was to Mina's person and her career - but no matter the damage he caused, she would survive that, too."

If Mina wants to save her brother and support her impoverished family with her earnings as an inspector, she has to deal with Rhys and his constant attempts to get her into his bed. Rhys knows Mina is in a tight spot and makes sure she can't get away from him. He also knows there is a strong sexual attraction between them and doesn't concern himself with Minas misgivings. What she wants isn't important to him until after the rape and even then he doesn't quite get the ramifications of what a sexual relationship would mean for Mina (public ostracism and humiliation, loss of livelihood, danger to her health and life).

Still, over time Rhys gets to Mina. She's not immune to the sexual attraction, his war hero status or his alpha charm. But she always says no.
On page 227 Rhys rapes Mina. The way the rape is narrated, the method and the fluid consent show me, that Meljean Brook must have thought long and hard to make the rape as inoffensive as possible for the reader: Mina and Rhys are drunk - always a popular excuse. Then Mina consents to a making out session, which leads over to other sexual acts that she doesn't consent to. Drunk as he is, Rhys doesn't recognize her refusal (pushing him away, janking his hair, crying, saying no ...). His method of rape is cunnilingus and he does it until she orgasms, but doesn't get off himself. Since we are in Rhys' head for this scene, we don't experience the terror Mina must have felt, because even as she climaxes Mina doesn't want to have sex.

This "good" rape (oh, how I hate this term) is a turning point in Minas and Rhys relationship. Rhys repents and grants Mina power over himself. She stops being something to be conquered (after all he already managed that in a way) and her goals and desires become more important to him. He also "grants" her distance - he won't pursue her anymore unless she comes to him first. He gives her back the power of refusal that he has taken away by force. Rhys' repentance makes him human - changes the way he views Mina and the world.

Mina cries into her handkerchief for a few hours, but then she consents to a sexual relationship with the Iron Duke. Since the power to say "no" was taken away from her, she might as well say yes and enjoy it.

I can't begin to tell you how horrified I am by the character of the hero, the "good" rape and its execution. I simply lack the words.

To all of you who think Rhys is sexy, I'd like to give you a little mental experiment.
Consider his character and everything he does and then think about whether you'd like your mother/daughter/sister/friend to be in Mina's shoes. If the answer is a horrified "no", as it was with me, then maybe Rhys isn't as sexy after all.

well written forced seduction
By Gen
Well, I really enjoyed the heroine and the world building. I just can't stomach the psycho uber alpha pirate hero who is given so many interesting and admirable traits, except when it comes to his treatment of the heroine. Watching such a likable heroine fall in love with him, especially after he forces her to receive oral sex from him (crying and saying no), was disgusting and depressing. He really would have been a cool hero otherwise.

What a strange way to create sexual tension in a romance book.

Good Continuation To The Series
By Some Average Guy
Bottom line is this book is probably slightly better than average compared to the series as a whole.

The good:
X New race encounters/tactics/relationships
X Same great space battles, but having to use some new tricks
X Dealing with the complications of aging fleet ships
X Some interesting events dealing with Syndics
X Nice growth of some 2nd-tier characters
X Less rehash/recap of what's in previous books (I guess the author realizes people buying this book will have almost certainly read one of the previous ones.)
X Less emphasis on the love/jealousy triangle between Geary, Diplomat Rione, and the Dauntless Captain
X Author picked a nice stopping point (not a terrible cliffhanger)

The bad:
X How many times does the main character have to say "I'm not Black Jack"? Seriously, we get it already. By now it's well into the hundreds.
X Same corny dialog. Probably a bit more than usual.
X A lot of characters remain very 2-dimensional / stereotype
X $13.00 for the kindle version. 'nuff said.
X At the end the author plugs another book "The Lost Stars: Tarnished Knight". It's basically part of the same timeline told from Syndic perspective. I think we need to focus on finishing the main story before we start milking it via side shows.

One last thought to my fellow readers hooked on stories like this: I recently stumbled across another series identical in flavor but actually a bit more intense: "Aurora: CV-01 (The Frontiers Saga)" is the first in the series. Short & cheap little books, but they are high-impact. Really surprised me. Might help with your craving for more until the next book in this series comes out.

Very entertaining addition
By Kindle Customer
Characterization has often been in short supply in this series as can be expected with so many ship captains being cycled through, but I found this latest effort by Mr. Hemry to finally be hitting his stride. I am beginning to prefer this series to that on David Weber's Honor Harrington saga because Mr. Hemry's improving story-telling skills and exciting story line. Also, Jack is not a superman, just a guy trying to keep his people safe and knowing that some will die no matter how good a job he does.

SPOILERS:
For example, Duellos, who as one of Black Jack's key advisors was little more than a stereotype, was revealed to be an actual person with real emotions and concerns. Jane Geary, who in the last few books has been a bit of a whiner ("Oh, woe is me, trying to live up to the family name"), finally had that breakthrough moment with Jack. Great. About time. Also, we get to see that Rionne is not a complete witch, and why she has been acting so testy in the last two books.
END SPOILERS

Oh, yes, and there are aliens. And fighting. And new friends made and old enemies confronted. I love this series and I hope we will continue to see more of the Lost Fleet in the months to come. I am also looking forward to reading the Tarnished Knight series as well. If you like epic space opera, then this is the series for you, but do not start here. The plot is way too convoluted unless you read the series in order, but it is worth the effort.

I do not understand why you want us to pay more for the electronic version $12.99 which cost practically nothing, then you do for the papperback version $7.99 or even the hardcover $15 and its a shame because i really enjoy this series but refuse to pay that price.

From Publishers Weekly
Maggie O'Neill, "empath, intuitive, and sometimes witchy nice girl," is oh-so-slowly recovering from a broken ankle in Alt's sprightly seventh paranormal cozy set in Stony Mill, Ind. (after 2010's A Witch in Time). Though Maggie loves her temporary digs with Marcus Quinn, her doting wizard boyfriend, she doesn't want him to delay his back-to-college plans to care for her. Maggie finds a great deal on a place at New Heritage, a local apartment complex, but before she can sign the lease, she and Marcus discover its manager, Rob Locke, floating in the complex's pool, dead from blunt force trauma. Maggie's ex-boyfriend, policeman Tom Fielding, isn't thrilled that Maggie is once again connected to a murder case. As Rob's involvement in some unsavory doings at New Heritage becomes clearer, Alt's light brew of mystery and romance turns deliciously chilling. (Jan.)

Reading with Tequila
By Jennifer Sicurella
With the relationships taken care of in A Witch in Time, the Bewitching Mystery series returns its focus to murder in Home for a Spell. The set up for the murder begins almost immediately, the body found soon after and readers will be delighted to find that almost the entire book is Maggie investigating.

Even while still incapacitated by her leg cast, Maggie still stumbling over corpses and ferreting out killers. Teaming up with both Marcus and Tom, making for some wonderful jealous tension, Maggie's embroiled in the best mystery in the series to date.

Maggie's prospective landlord is killed, and while the motive is obvious early on, the murderer is not. Twists and turns and a mighty unexpected ending will leave readers shocked and anxious for more.

The Bewitching Mystery series is notorious for dragging things out longer than need be. Home for a Spell is no exception. As with the multi-book "should Maggie be with Tom or Marcus?" conundrum, readers will still be wanting to know two big things - What's really going on in Stony Mill? and Is Grandma C a ghosts or what?

Even without all the answers we crave, the Bewitching Mystery series is better and better with each new book. Home for a Spell puts the much needed mystery back in the series.

Seemed a little slow.
By Reanna03
I can honestly say that even though I like this series I was hoping for a book with more excitement, it seemed a little underwhelming, especially after all the previous books. There really wasn't much danger, mystery, or paranormal but it was still making references to some brewing supernatural trouble in town. I finished this book and felt like I was missing something. I think the book just felt like filler, a way to tie up loose ends and maybe set some bigger things in motion but overall definitely not the best in series.

whimsical amateur sleuth small town fantasy
By A Customer
Stony Mill, Indiana is a charming small town known as the antiques capital of the Midwest. It used to be a quiet place where nothing major occurred, but in the last year a string of murders unconnected to each other has occurred. Maggie O'Neill, who works at the Enchantments antique shop, is an empath who channels her Spirit Guides and at times casts a magick spell. Her lover Marcus Quinn and her boss Felicity "Liss" Dow are experienced with the paranormal arts.

Maggie lives with Marcus since she broke her ankle and needs his help to get around. When she realizes he is going to delay attending college to take care of her, she decides to move into her own place. Maggie gets a good deal on a rental but when they go to sign the lease, they find the complex manager dead in the pool. Using Marcus' mundane skills and Maggie's arcane gifts, they work with the police to find out what was on a flash drive and a hard drive that was smashed to smithereens. What they learn explains why he was murdered, but who the perpetrator is remains blank.

This whimsical amateur sleuth small town urban fantasy mystery is pure magic as is the overall series (see A Witch In Time). Maggie has matured considerably in the past year as she has learned to love her skills rather than rue having them. The murder is believable and the characters ring true. However, Home for a Spell belongs to the lead couple as the author casts a spellbinder of a tale on enchanted readers.

Totally hooked on this series!
By Brain Full
This is the 7th book in the Molly Pink crochet mystery series, and like all the others in the series, it's a delightful read. The story is filled with quirky and fun characters and situations, and as the story unravels (pun intended), pieces of the puzzle are revealed at just the right time to heighten interest and engage the reader.

Brief synopsis (no spoilers): Molly Pink is a forty-something-year-old widow who works as an Event Coordinator in a bookstore. Molly has two gentlemen friends, Barry (a detective) and Mason (a criminal attorney). Molly seems to attract trouble (as in murders of her acquaintances), and she feels compelled to solve the crimes. Having access to a detective and criminal attorney comes in handy, but, of course, she gets herself into trouble along the way. This story centers around a film shoot in a residential neighborhood and a murder that occurs there.

The characters in the series have become my good friends. I love spending time with them. Their consistent personalities throughout the series make them very real to me. I care about them, and I like to help them find resolutions to their problems (even if they don't listen to me). I cheer for them when they succeed.

The books in this series can be read in any order, but I recommend that you read the 6th book in the series (Behind the Seams) before the 7th book (If Hooks Could Kill). There's a gasp-worthy surprise at the end of the 6th book that you will miss if you read the 7th book first.

You don't need to crochet in order to enjoy this series, but it does add to the enjoyment if you happen to be a yarncrafter. There are three crochet patterns at the end of the book in addition to two recipes. I made the crochet patterns, and I particularly like CeeCee's Cowl. It's quick and easy to make, and is especially attractive in variegated yarn.

I learned about this crochet mystery book series some years ago from a blog of recommended books for Mother's Day. After reading the first book, I was inspired to crochet again, as the characters helped me recall how much I enjoyed crocheting. The books also inspired me to join a knitting/crocheting group, not unlike the Tarzana Hookers in the series--but, thankfully, sans murders. I follow author Betty Hechtman's weekly blog, and I have come to know her (she's a wonderful creative person, and nice as could be). Betty is currently working on a new series--the first book is called Yarn to Go and will be released in July 2013. I preordered the book on Amazon.

Here are all the books in the Molly Pink series (so far):

Book 1: Hooked on Murder
Book 2: Dead Men Don't Crochet
Book 3: By Hook or by Crook
Book 4: A Stitch in Crime
Book 5: You Better Knot Die
Book 6: Behind the Seams
Book 7: If Hooks Could Kill

I highly recommended this series for a light, fun read. Enjoy!

Flawed but Fun Yarn
By CJ-MO
Things couldn't be more awkward for Molly Pink. She impulsively invited her ex-boyfriend Barry, and his teenaged son, to stay with her while he recuperates from a gunshot wound and is now regretting it. Molly tries to stay out of his way as much as possible, going about her business as event manager for a local bookstore and getting together with the other members of her crochet club, The Tarzana Hookers. However, Barry knows how to tempt Molly into spending time with him. While on leave from his job as a homicide detective, Barry has been assigned a couple of cold cases. He lures Molly into agreeing to evening chats about murder over cups of hot tea. Then Molly and the other "hookers" get a shock when Kelly Donahue, the club's newest member, is murdered in her own home. Molly has always been known as the group's amateur detective, but now fellow group member Adele, who is dating a cop, tries to solve the case before Molly. Adele seems to make things worse and Molly tries to do some sleuthing on her own, but still manages to get on the bad side of "Officer Heather" who is the in charge of the official investigation of Kelly's murder.

"If Hooks Could Kill" is the seventh book in this series, but it's easy for a new reader to dive right into the story and catch up on the main players. Molly has a dream job as an event coordinator for a bookstore and seems like she would be a fun person to hang around with. She and her best friend Dinah get along well and support each other in times of need. Some of the other characters aren't as pleasant. Molly's co-worker and member of the crochet group, Adele, has always been bossy, but is completely overbearing and obnoxious in this installment. Adele walks all over Molly and the others and while they complain, they still put up with her rudeness and her condescending attitude. Adele throws out the occasional amusing one-liner, but for the most part I don't know how the other group member can stand to be around her.

Unfortunately, Adele isn't the only one who takes advantage of Molly's good nature. Barry milks his condition for all he can to try to get back in Molly's life. He is more mellow in this book than the prior book when his controlling ways were almost scary, but he still isn't my favorite character. In prior books, Molly's friend Mason seemed like he might be a good match for Molly, but he comes across self-centered and pushy this time. By the end of the book, I was tired of Adele, Barry, and Mason and was ready to have things wrapped up and over with.

The best part of the book is the humor. For example, Kelly's husband has recently opened the "Hollar for a Dollar" store. Throughout the book, Molly and her friends laugh about the off-brands sold in the store, such as "Uncle Len's Rice" and "Wiggly's Spearmint Gum", and I was laughing along with them. I also really like how the California setting sets up a lot of interesting sub-plots in the book related to the entertainment industry. One of the members of the crochet group, CeeCee Collins is an actress and Barry's son wants to be an actor. A main part of the story involves Kelly renting her yard to be used for filming a television show. This is a different world to me and it's fun to read about people signing their house up with a location service to be featured in TV shows and movies.

This starts out as a light, fun mystery, but unfortunately some of the characters become tedious. The main plot is interesting and the murder is solved with all loose ends of the investigation are tied up by the end. However, there is a major cliffhanger at the end of the book that really leaves the reader hanging. There are crochet projects and recipes at the end, and the book should appeal to fans of Maggie Sefton or Monica Ferris.

This review was originally written for The Season EZine. The book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.

Get hooked on the crochet mysteries!
By Cozy Reader
Lights! Camera! Action! The television crime show LA 911 has come to Tarzana and is using some of the locations of Tarzana as cinematic backdrops, including the yard of Tarzana Hookers most recent member, Kelly Donahue. When Kelly turns up dead, Molly and her crochet group, the Tarzana Hookers, are devastated. With the police having no solid leads, Molly decides to investigate herself. It will take some great sleuthing from Molly and her pals to catch a killer before someone else ends up dead.

I've been "hooked" on this series since the first book, Hooked on Murder. The Crochet Mysteries center around Molly Pink, who is an Event Co-Ordinator for the bookstore, Shedd & Royal Books and More. Shedd & Royal Books is pretty unique in that it sells books and yarn. That's right. And the bookstore is the base for the Tarzana Hookers, the local crochet group, which Molly is a member of.

For me, it's been a great reading journey with the Tarzana Hookers watching Molly crochet her first "square" and grow and develop friendships and relationships in Tarzana. It's always a delight to pick up the next book in this series and If Hooks Could Kill was definitely no exception.

I really liked the mystery surrounding the newest member, Kelly. It seems that she's being a little "cagey" about showing her crochet work, and this mystery deepens when she turns up dead. The murder mystery definitely kept me on my toes, as I tried to solve the mystery.

If Hooks Could Kill was another great instalment in this series. This series keeps getting better and better, and if you haven't started it yet I strongly recommend starting from the first book, Hooked on Murder, as this is definitely one series you wanted to get "hooked" on from the first book!
