Beautiful Disaster - absolutely loved it!!!
By Catherine Jensen
From the first chapter of Beautiful Disaster I was hooked. Ms. Spinella's debut novel will keep you reading, start to finish. She does a masterful job of weaving the past and present while bringing you characters and a story that are equally mesmerizing. I have not enjoyed a novel this much in some time. Although the book features a Southern backdrop, readers from anywhere will be drawn to Mia and Flynn's story. Reading a book where you find yourself truly rooting for the characters is a rarity. Beautiful Disaster accomplishes this and a great deal more. The author's descriptive talents and dialogue are vivid and genuine, adding to this turn paging novel. In a character driven book, the story is also complete with plenty of twists and turns. My only regret is that there isn't another Spinella novel on the shelf!

A fascinating book from someone who doesn't usually read romances
By Lyn Meadows
Let me start by saying, I am not a huge fan of Romance books. In the case of Beautiful Disaster I am more than willing to make an exception. This book captured my interest from page one and held it throughout the entire book. More than just a romance book, Laura Spinella's debut novel contains an intriguing back story that grabbed the mystery/thriller loving portion of my brain and left me chewing on several theories as the story progressed. While this part of the story was by no means the main event, nor really even entirely fleshed out, it kept me reading through the more formulaic romance aspects of the book. And even that portion of the book was above average. Rather than being one dimensional, Spinella's characters were flawed, which only added to their allure. At some point in the book each character was poised to make choices that left me shaking my head and saying, "What were you thinking????" Did the story contain all the formulaic pieces of a typical romance? Yes, it did. BUT -- this was much more than just a boy and girl meet, fall in love, become estranged, get back together, and live happily ever after story. It was a richly told story about people, they choices they make, and the impact throughout their lives of those choices.

Beautiful Disaster - Review
By Jacquelyn Lane
This was a great debut novel from Spinella.

Mia Montgomery (Wells), who is going to college to be an eco-friend designer, meets Flynn, an older, motorcycle riding bad boy. Flynn is running from something but Mia doesn't care. She loves being with him through good and bad and he promises never to just leave. He does just that and it shatters Mia.

Mia goes on to marry and is on the verge of realizing her eco-friendly dream when her best friend, Roxanne, calls her to tell her that her lost love has been in a motorcycle accident that he might not survive and is at the hospital where she works in the trauma unit. Mia rushes to the hospital and keeps vigil over Flynn in the hopes that he will recover.

Mia's husband is away on various business trips while Mia continues to work at Flynn's bedside. Roxanne continues to warn Mia off, but Mia will not listen.

When Flynn awakens and confronts Roxanne about a letter he wrote that Mia obviously knows nothing about, everything begins to unravel.

Can love survive years later after all the pain Flynn has inflicted on Mia by just leaving? Can the friendship between Mia and Roxanne survive?

In the end second chances are possible and love can survive.

I was very satisfied with this read. It has a little bit of romance, a little bit of mystery and just enough intrigue to keep me guessing.

Light, but fascinating
By Holly
The cover is gorgeous and the premise sounded interesting and it was. However, it took me awhile to get into it and it took me awhile to really like Jasmine. At first she's a completely negative, angry, man-hating woman. She's bitter after a messy divorce from her philandering husband. I get that. But, she was seriously unlikeable for the first half of the book.

Jasmine's also resentful of being forced to return to her hometown and run her aunt's eccentric bookstore where ghosts whisper and dead authors walk the halls. Her sister is deliriously happy and planning a marriage that Jasmine can't be positive about and a mysterious stranger begins keeping her company.

The magical realism element actually worked here and added an interesting twist. I love bookstores. I think bookstores, especially quirky used bookstores, have their own personalities. This really comes across in Haunting Jasmine and was the best part about the story. I also found the East Indian/Hindu insights to be fascinating. Some will want to know that there is non-graphic sex. A light, but not fluffy read, I'm glad I got it from the library rather than purchasing it.

A Delightful Read!
By SB
Haunting Jasmine grabbed my attention at the start and kept it till the surprising end. It is emotional women's fiction with a great mix of whimsical, multicultural characters and a love story with paranormal elements. A hint of humor subtly woven through the tale makes it a delightful read. I would recommend this to anyone who loves an entertaining story.

Between Bookshelves Lie Ghosts
By Literary Marie
Divorcee Jasmine "Bippy" needs a break from investment managing and from L.A. She returns home to Shelter Island to run her fragile aunt Ruma's bookstore for a month. But nobody warned her she has to sleep in the attic, care for the house, and babysit the dusty books. Nor did anyone tell her the bookstore is haunted.

It's hard for Jasmine to adjust in Shelter Island. Her BlackBerry doesn't receive a signal. Espresso, wifi, and other comfortable luxuries are not available in the old bookstore. Instead of bestsellers on display, there are used classics by Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. There is only Tony, a devoted co-worker, and Connor Hunt, an internal medicine doctor visiting the island often browsing the bookshelves. Pushing a major work presentation to the side, Jasmine concentrates on restoring her broken heart. Guided by the voices of deceased classic authors, she becomes someone new.

This was a great choice for the Colorful Chick Lit challenge and for ICLM. There are classic literary quotes and references to classic authors. I especially liked that the main character was Bengali. Did you know white is the color of mourning to Bengalis? Have you ever tasted mango chutney, fish curry, or curried potato and cauliflower? I drooled while reading about the tasty greatness of roshagollas (breadlike balls of pastry dipped in syrup). If the book cover alone doesn't entice you to pick this up, then the food references will! Or maybe it's just my greedy nature. :)

Review
"A lovely story starring a heroine who could be any one of us. An unexpected delight!" --Carly Phillips, New York Times bestselling author

"Maria Geraci writes with a vibrant, rich, contemporary voice that manages to be tender and hilarious at the same time." --Roxanne St. Claire, New York Times Bestselling Author

"If you’re looking for an intense drama, I hate to disappoint you, but you won’t find it in “A Girl Like You.” It’s a sweet, happy-go-lucky piece that was a pleasure to read and had me grinning from beginning to end. I definitely recommend it, especially if you want a feel-good chick lit novel to chill with during these hot summer days (or any other time of the year)." --Chick Lit Central

"Terrific....A Girl Like You is an intelligent, warm, funny novel." --Vibrant Nation

"Maria Geraci's back with another smart and funny novel.... Geraci's books are so addictive that once you've begun reading, you'll find yourself lost for hours in her heartwarming stories about flawed yet lovable characters….A sweet story about accepting yourself for who you are, A Girl Like You should be on your must-read list before summer ends." --She Knows

"Geraci is an excellent chick lit author, and I was charmed by this novel.....This is one for your to-read list! My favorite part about this book was the way that there was no clear-cut guy (at least in my opinion) for Emma. I kept changing my mind on who she was going to end up with, and without giving his identity away, I’ll say it surprised me! That went for a lot of the book – just when I thought the plot would go one way, it twisted another. Love these types of books! Emma was a great lead, full of questions and concerns and had a very relatable attitude about life, career, and love, and this was a delightful chick lit read all around." --Chick Lit Plus

A Twist, Turn and Enjoyable Ride!
By Sharon M. Dewit
I received this book on Thurs. Started it Friday and finished it Sat. morning. One of those "finds" that is difficult to continue with normal life. ie SO GOOD YOU CANNOT STOP READING! I totally enjoyed this story. I thought I could predict what was going to happen, but it was definitely not predictable. If you enjoy a story about friendship and love this is the one for you!

Easy and fun read
By Charlotte Lynn
Emma Frazier works for Florida!, a lifestyle magazine. She has a crush on her boss, Ben Gallagher. When she is out at a local bar someone refers to her as the "ugly friend." At that point she decides she can impress her boss and co-workers by getting the interview of a life time with Nascar driver, Trip Monroe.
The only problem is Trip does not do interviews. Emma hopes she can lay the we went to school together card and get the coveted interview. Starting by going back to their hometown, Catfish Cove, where she learns of secrets and meets another classmate and a romance starts. Will Emma get her interview? Can she overcome the "ugly friend" comment?

A Girl Like You is witty and fun. From the very beginning I was sucked right in and read the whole book in almost one sitting. I really liked that Emma referred to her moms throughout the book and it was dealt with, but not made a HUGE deal. Usually I don't enjoy the first person point of view, liking to know all the characters in the story, but this time it was great. Emma told her story and kept it all real.

Emma is so lovable. She is real. She is a normal size, with normal friends, and normal insecurities. Her crush on her boss, who leads her on without starting a relationship, makes me chuckle. I feel like Emma truly knows herself. She knows deep down that she is not that "ugly friend", but sometimes hearing it you just have to work through it. As she works through it she discovers more and more about herself and makes herself stronger and more self esteemed.

I kept thinking I knew how this would end, but was very pleasantly surprised with how the story actually ended. If you are looking for an easy fun read check this out.

3 Kisses, TwoLips Reviews

3 Kisses, 0 Peppers (sweet romance)

Emma Frazier has a crush on her new boss but her hopes are dashed when he goes home from the bar with the chick who called her "the ugly friend". Emma is a writer for a magazine and the majority of the story revolves around her promise to get a big scoop on NASCAR giant Trip Monroe. He's been named "sexiest man alive" and is rather elusive.

Trip and Emma went to school together and she assumes he'll be happy to talk to her. Naturally she exaggerates how well she knows him. She drives to her hometown for the weekend, hoping to get some information on him and bumps into old high school heartthrob, Nick Alfonso. He flirts with her and they end up making out. Is Nick the one for her? What will happen with Trip? What about her boss, Ben?

It's Emma's sheer dumb luck that makes things work out for her in the end. She's apparently a good writer, but in general she's totally clueless.

What I liked about A Girl Like You: Maria Geraci's writing style is witty and fun. It tends to suck you in so you want to read the whole book in one sitting. I really liked that Emma has two lesbian mothers, and how that issue is dealt with throughout the book.

What I didn't like so much: The book is written from the first person point of view, so we have no idea what the other characters are thinking or feeling. For me, this is usually a big handicap. Also, per the publisher, this book is classified as "Women's Fiction", more specifically "Chick Lit". It has romantic elements, but that doesn't seem to be the main focus of the book. Also, I didn't like Emma or her friends very much. If I had to hang out with Emma for very long, I'd get pretty cranky. I found it nearly impossible to identify with her, and I find that's often the case for me with Chick Lit. Finally, there was zero heat, which really isn't the type of book I usually prefer to read.

There was a very unexpected twist at the end, regarding the "romance" aspect of the book. I won't spoil it for you, but I'm still deciding if this made the book more interesting or just completely frustrating. If you're a fan of Chick Lit, you'll probably enjoy this more than I did.

From Bookforum
Grandly called a collection of essays, the book actually gathers Gibson's occasional journalism, much from the late-twentieth century, almost none of it worth rereading today. Certainly, Gibson's voice is engaging, conversational, winning, But Distrust That Particular Flavor needs less journalism, better writing, and more thinking. —Michael Dirda

Review
“Gibson pulls off a dazzling trick. Instead of predicting the future, he finds the future all around him, mashed up with the past, and reveals our own domain to us.”—The New York Times Book Review

“I forget that in addition to being a major novelist (Zero History, Neuromancer, etc.), he’s one of the best essayists and critical observers currently operating within our sociocultural sphere. This is his first essay collection, and it’s messed up how good it is: raw, weird, honest, smart.”—Lev Grossman, Time Entertainment

“Exquisitely written, done to a turn with both insight and that unmistakable prose that is just shy of spectacular.…This is a fine and even essential complement to the Gibson canon, and a delight to read.”—BoingBoing.net

“Though he’s often lauded as a big-picture man, these pieces make one thing clear: He’s even better with the little details.”—A.V. Club

“The most startling pieces here crackle with his excitement at discovering some unexpected aspect of the new.”—The Globe and Mail (Canada)

“A breezy, engaging read.”—The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

“Potent…elegant prose.”—The Seattle Times

The artist behind the art
By flaviolius
I've been a fan of William Gibson's fiction for a long time, and have marveled at his ability to portray modern life as it almost is. He always seems a step ahead of what is current, in one way or another, and is able to communicate his ideas in a starkly written style that always manages to seem slightly ambiguous. However, with the release of this collection of non-fiction, I realized I never gave much thought to Gibson himself....until now. Through reading these pieces, I've gained a new and deeper appreciation for Gibson's fiction.

For the most part, these articles, essays, and lectures are written in the first person, which was a revelatory experience for me. I'd never read any of the pieces in this collection, so it was like seeing something familiar with brand-new eyes. The insight contained within is invaluable; not only did I learn much about Gibson's mind and what makes him tick, I also unearthed a lot of background data for the events in his fiction. In that way, reading this book was much like listening to a director's commentary of a dearly loved film - I gained new perspective that emphasizes and deepens.

It's abundantly clear that Gibson is deeply intrigued by modern culture, whether it's technology, psychology, fashion, behavior, eBay, or YouTube, and reading his meticulous picking apart of trends is just as fascinating as experiencing his fiction. Gibson's sense of excitement and wonder are infectious, his attention to detail is razor keen, and his open-mindedness is inspiring. I was a fan of Gibson's work before Distrust That Particular Flavor, but I am now a fan of Gibson the man.

This is essential reading, not just for Gibson fans, but for anyone fascinated by the bizarrely intricate roller-coaster world we are living in.

Good if You are a Gibson Fan
By Amazon Customer
I really like William Gibson's books; I only know of one I haven't read. I have often wondered how he came to see things the way he does since I am about the same age, work in electronics, and I did not see so much of today's changes coming. I can't say I have an answer to that question after reading "Distrust That Particular Flavor". I did find this collection of essays interesting reading. This is not the book of the year, as one reviewer wrote. It is a collection of book introductions, talks, and magazine articles with afterwords comments added by Mr. Gibson where he gives his thoughts looking back at his works. It shows that Mr. Gibson, like the rest of us, is no clairvoyant. For the Gibson fan, buy it. For those who are trying to write the next big Sci-Fi novel and hoping to find Gibson's muse, move on. William Gibson appears to write things the old fashion way; hard work and a lot of typing.
Note on Amazon Kindle version: One chapter refers to pictures that do not appear. The Kindle version gets a "D". Amazon needs to get it's act together.

Witty, insightful and refreshingly self-deprecating
By Bookreporter
He is credited with coining the term "cyberspace" and has written novels like NEUROMANCER and MONA LISA OVERDRIVE that have given us a glimpse of a frequently unsettling future. Now, in DISTRUST THAT PARTICULAR FLAVOR, William Gibson offers his first nonfiction collection, an assortment of 25 often quirky pieces, ranging from articles for magazines like Wired, Fortune and Time, to essays, book introductions and speeches. Witty, insightful and refreshingly self-deprecating, they reveal that Gibson is as talented in reflecting on our own time as he is in envisioning our collective future.

Perhaps that ability flows from his grasp of one of the recurring tropes that appear in these pieces. "All cultural change is essentially technologically driven," Gibson believes, a point he illustrates in "Googling the Cyborg," a speech delivered to the Vancouver Institute in 2006. In it, he describes what he calls the "Steam Engine Moment," a recognition that certain ideas have been around for a long time, but only blossom when they're destined to do so. He's less interested in the construction of physical robots as he is in the way our interactions with electronic media are creating what he calls an "Augmented Reality," offering us something approaching the universal library imagined by one of his literary heroes, Jose Luis Borges, for whose LABYRINTHS he contributed a preface that appears here ("A ridiculously unearned honor, to be asked to do this. I'm still embarrassed.").

Of writing about the future, Gibson told an audience at BookExpo America in 2010 that "imaginary futures are always, regardless of what the authors might think, about the day in which they're written." That's as true of George Orwell's NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR, he argues, as it is of Gibson's own novel, NEUROMANCER, set in the 2030s, and published in the same year as Orwell's nightmare vision. He makes a similar point in an essay on H.G. Wells and his story, THE TIME MACHINE.

"Time moves in one direction, memory in another," Gibson observes of another one of his fascinations --- the notion, reflected as long ago as the time of the ancient cave painters, that ours is "that strange species that constructs artifacts to counter the natural flow of forgetting." In more than one piece, he notes, with an almost childlike awe, that we can turn on the radio or television and summon dead people back to life.

Gibson's travel pieces, revealing him as something of an idiosyncratic travel writer, are among the most entertaining ones here. "Disneyland with the Death Penalty" is his portrait of 1993-vintage Singapore, a "relentlessly G-rated experience, micromanaged by a state that has the look and feel of a very large corporation," and a place where economists can be tried for revealing the country's growth rate or a man sentenced to death for importing one kilogram of marijuana. He has a special affinity for Japan, the setting for some of his fiction, and a country he describes as "the global imagination's default setting for the future," even after the bursting of its economic bubble.

Although Gibson's writing doesn't typically veer too far into the personal, there's an amusing, if overlong, article for Wired, "My Obsession," recounting his fascination with bidding on mechanical watches on eBay. He also confesses his love of the music of Steely Dan ("Any `Mount of World"), describes an abiding affection for the city of London ("Metrophagy") and confesses, most shockingly, in "The Net is a Waste of Time," that at least as of 1996 he didn't use email ("In all truth, I have avoided it because am lazy and enjoy staring blankly into space...and because unanswered mail, e- or otherwise, is a source of discomfort.").

Gibson is nothing if not humble, as he reveals in an Introduction that explains how he came to the writing vocation. Admitting he's not entirely comfortable making the transition from fiction to nonfiction, he concedes he has "often felt as though I'm applying latex paint to the living room walls with a toothbrush." One especially enjoyable feature of the collection are the comments, ranging from a sentence or two to a few paragraphs, that Gibson appends to each of the pieces, reflecting on their provenance or the circumstances of their creation.

William Gibson doesn't reveal any preternatural gift here for gazing into the distant future with startling clarity. Instead, he has been blessed with an even more valuable talent: the ability to keenly observe the present and show us how the changes it's already spawning someday will insinuate themselves into our lives.

From Publishers Weekly
This character- and plot-heavy sequel to June 2010's Crush on You delivers a very sexy hero, a frustratingly stubborn heroine who doth protest way too much, and a messy tangle of voices and story threads. Tomboy Stephania "Stevie" Baci avoids responsibility for the family vineyard–cum–wedding destination until she is forced by circumstance to coordinate the nuptials of her ex-fiancé and his new flame, a bona fide princess. Luckily, the bride's princely, very alpha male brother, Jacques "Jack" Parini, helps Stevie save face by posing as her new fiancé. Abundant plot elements add depth but muddle the story arc, and the multicharacter head-hopping detracts from the hero and heroine. While the protagonists' challenging, determined venture into love and lust is touching, stiff prose and pronoun confusion keep this romance flatly earthbound. (Jan.)

From Booklist
Stevie, the middle one of the three Baci girls, is tough, independent, and not interested in the Napa Valley winery that has been in her family for a century. She runs her own business, Napa Princess Limousines, and is much more comfortable in her chauffeur’s uniform than in a skirt, especially since her long-term boyfriend, Emerson, dumped her for a real-live princess. But Stevie is conscripted to help out with the failing winery when her sister, who started a wedding business to boost income, breaks her foot. Even worse, the next big wedding is that of Emerson and Princess Roxy. Roxy’s brother Jack, a bad-boy tabloid favorite, is on the scene to make sure nothing goes wrong, and he doesn’t like the idea of her wedding coordinator being the groom’s ex. Then, when he and Stevie are caught “canoodling,” he claims they are engaged. Ridgway’s (The Care and Feeding of Unmarried Men, 2006) breezy romance features enjoyable characters and hotly detailed lovemaking in a contemporary Napa Valley setting. --Diana Tixier Herald

About the Author
Christie Ridgway has never lived east of the Pacific Ocean, north of San Francisco, or south of San Diego. To put it simply, she's a California native who loves to travel but is happy to make the Golden State her home. She began her writing career in fifth grade when she penned a volume of love stories featuring herself and a teen idol who will probably be thrilled to remain nameless. Later, though, after marrying her college sweetheart, Christie again took up writing romances, this time with imaginary heroes and heroines. In a house full of males one terrific husband, two school-age sons, a yellow dog, and tankfuls of fish, reptiles, and amphibians Christie makes her own place (and peace) writing the kinds of stories she loves best.

Every woman should get to kiss a prince ;)
By Blodeuedd
I truly must read more contemporary romance, it is so refreshing, and real, and still fairytale love, a[...]

This is the second book, but I jumped right in and missed nothing. In the last book the first Baci sister found true love, and in this one it is time for Stevie, the tomboy to find her love. She always played with boys, and she is not seen as the most feminine person around, she also hides her feeling. But I liked her, she was perfect as she was, and behind that mask she hid a lot. Then there is the playboy prince from Europe, oh every woman should get to kiss a prince, so of course I liked him. Especially when they both start to realise how strong the attraction truly is between them.

There is also the sidestory with princess Roxanne and her groom, Emmerson, or shall we say Stevie's ex. What I did not like is how fast that happened, and truth be told, I never did see the attraction there between them. On the other hand I did not care, if it is there it is, if not then it is not. Dunno of I liked her either. Anyway I was more focused on the main couple and not these two getting ready for their wedding. There was also some drama with Stevie's older sister, and that looks to be a good third book.

They are hiding a lot of feelings in this book. Stevie from way back, and Jack is still dealing with a kidnapping that happened when he was younger. It is not a whirlwind romance, there is lust, doubt about the lust, and exploring the lust.

Final thoughts and recommendation.
Oh, yes I wanna give this one a 4, I am so contemporary romance starved. It was so wonderful to read about real people in my own era. And I am such a sucker for a woman who falls for a prince, I always loved that scenario. The book was fun, romantic, and with a nice feeling all the way through. It also made me wonder about the next book, and made me wanting to read it. Because I liked her style.

Reason for reading:
He is a prince ;)

Contemporary Romance- Jan. 4th, 2011
3 1/2 stars

Out of the Baci sisters, Stevie is the middle girl. Unlike her eldest or the youngest sister, Stevie does not help out at the Baci Winery. Instead she focuses on her own business called, the Napa Princess Limousine. When the Baci sisters transform the winery into a wedding destination, Stevie ends up as the limo chaffeur and wedding planner for her ex-boyfriend - a man who abruptly dumped her for a real Princess. Unfortunately, the bride's brother, Jacques Parini, takes it upon himself to oversee the event and make sure that Stevie will not sabotage his sister's wedding. But is doesn't take Jack long form him to realize that Stevie is very dangerous to his mind and his heart. Can he win his this Napa Princess's heart?

Fun and breezy, this is a charming story about a tomboy who secretly seeks acceptance and a prince who is really a simple farmer at heart looking for meaning in his life. Stevie is an out and out tomboy, treated by the guys as one of them, and capable of fixing cars and doing rough-and-tough jobs. But, her inner self-doubts, her constant struggle to be liked, and her unwillingness to display her feminine side makes her a likeable and relatable character. Similarly, Jack Parini might be as glossy as model on the outside, but in the inside, he still deals with the repercussions from a traumatic incident in the past. Reading about them getting together was funny and heartwarming at the same time.

An engaging story with two interesting main characters, this book is for those who dream about a princess fairy tale romance.

delightful contemporary romance
By Harriet Klausner
Stephania "Stevie" Baci wants nothing to do with her family vineyard turned into a wedding events place. However, though she tries to avoid serving as a hostess at Tanti Baci Winery Wedding Chapel, Stevie has no choice but to run the marriage of her former fiancé Emerson Platt and his intended bride Princess Roxanne of Ardenia.

Roxanne's brother Prince Jacques "Jack" Parini agrees to assist Stevie with the event and to help her avoid humiliation of watching her former fiancé walk down the aisle by pretending to be her fiancé. She accepts his kind offer although she considers rejecting it as she will now have to spend time with an alpha hunk she secretly covets. As they fall in love, Stevie doubts she is ready to walk down the aisle.

The latest Three Kisses Napa Valley romance (see Crush on You) is a delightful contemporary starring a protective champion (with strong reasons to watch over his sister and Stevie) and an "I'm Not In Love heroine. Although the support cast can prove overwhelming at times (then again it is a wedding), fans will enjoy the adventures in love between the Mystery Man who insists he is as much a Georgia farmer as as he is a European royal and the winery's Tomboy.

Made it to page 81 and asked myself why . . .
By Jerry Saperstein
I am a Clive Cussler fan - but Clive Cusssler apparently little involved with the writing of the books bearing his name.

There have been eight prior Kurt Austin adventures written with Paul Kemprecos. Now no one really knows how these collaborations work, but the Kurt Austin books have been pretty good. If you've read the Dirk Pitt series (22 in all) you have a feeling for Clive Cussler solo - and with his son, Dirk Cussler, as a co-author (very different).

Cussler's trademark is high-flying plots that strain the reader's willingness to believe. But when Cussler is telling the story, he builds strong heroic characters and his story telling skills are powerful enough to pull the reader through.

In "Devil's Gate", Cussler seems to be entirely absent. The plot is outlandish - and Graham Brown's story telling is simply inadequate. The characters, including hero Kurt Austin, parody their roles in earlier books. The dialog of the bad guys seems to have come together from an accident involving refrigerator magnets. The plot and action quickly move from outlandish to bizarre to completely unbelievable - and I only made it to page 81.

The last Isaac Bell adventure, the fourth in the series after three excellent books, fell on its face as well.

A prolific author with 48 books to his credit, there's going to be a cropper or two. It seems that Cussler is trying to build a factory or farm system to up the number of titles he has in print, which in turn will increase his revenue. Apparently he is farming more and more of the actual writing out to others and, I think, the plotting as well.

The result has been more titles with the Clive Cussler name on them and, in my opinion, weaker stories.

"Devil's Gate" just doesn't make it for me. By page 81, nothing was believable and the characters - familiar from earlier books - felt like parodies.

Not up to what I expect of Cussler.

Jerry

Open the gates
By Marcus A. Lewis
Kurt Austin returns in a brand new adventure from the NUMA Files. We last saw Austin and Zavala in "Medusa" (6/09). This time around Clive Cussler has a new co-author Graham Brown. Together the two storytellers attempt to pump new blood into a waning franchise. I will miss Paul Kemprecos' contribution to the series, but the move will hopefully prove to be a beneficial one. Having said that, it does not bode well for a novel when there is a proofreading error on the very first page (though instead of through)

"Devil's Gate" begins with the requisite prologue, set on the tarmac in Santa Maria, the Azores in 1951..a mysterious Russian passenger and his luggage are being spirited to the U.S. by an American pilot named Hudson. The passenger is shot before he can reboard the plane and is left for dead. Hudson is also hit and the "Connie" he's flying goes down in the Atlantic. If you are familiar with the Cussler template, you know this incident will eventually intrude on present-day events.

If you're a high-adventure enthusiast, give Cussler and Brown a nod. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with this new-look addition to the NUMA Files.

Cussler brings back Kurt Austin - dropped into a plot from an African dictator threatening the planet.

As most Cussler books do this one opens with a flashback, this time to 1951 when a plane with a suspicious cargo goes down near the Azores. Fast forward and a scientist for the Large Hadron Collider stages his own kidnapping. The scientist is drawn into the dictator's plan for a super weapon that will hold the world's superpowers hostage to his whim.

The dictator tests his weapon on a ship near where Austin's NUMA vessel is sailing. There is the "James Bondesque" quality of some of the characters, plot lines and dialogue - and credibility is strained. Cussler and collaborator Graham Brown add a little international romance as well. But if you enjoy Cussler's regular fare you will find this an enjoyable if "reality-stretching" good vs. evil story.

Great book, great series. "Thank you" Cleo Coyle for hours of entertainment
By Holly
If it's late summer/early fall, then I know it's time for a new installment in the Coffeehouse Mystery series by Cleo Coyle. I am a huge fan of the cozy mystery genre but sometimes they cross the line into "too silly" for me and just too fluffy. This series has been wonderful from the start, the quality has remained exceptional throughout, and none of the books have crossed my personal "silliness" line.

My first exposure to the series came in 2006 when I read the first three books in a two week period and LOVED them! Now, I eagerly look forward to the next installment, waiting to get my coffeehouse fix. I have to say that I open each new novel with a moment of hesitation, afraid that my love affair with the series may be about to end since it won't meet my hopes and expectations; it has yet to happen. As with all books, some I like better than others largely based upon the subject matter but they are all well-written and I rate them from very good to great. The quality is consistently high which is pretty amazing for a series ten books long. To cut to the chase, I was pleased again and impressed that this writing team has been able to keep it fresh and interesting over the years.

As with all the Coffeehouse mysteries, our main character is Clare Cosi, the manager and operator of The Village Blend, an independent coffee shop in the heart of Greenwich Village. Clare is a character with a bit more maturity (she has an adult daughter named Joy who is one of the characters) and it really helps keep these out of the silly arena. The time out, The Village Blend is providing coffee beans to be used in creating Mocha Magic Coffee which is being launched as an effective aphrodisiac. Blended with chocolate and herbs, not only does it taste very good, the impact on the love life have the developers convinced it will bring in huge amounts of money. It's going to be sold on-line as part of Aphrodite's Village, a web community catering to women. As in all murder mysteries, not everything is as it seems on the surface and people are being attacked and killed. Exactly who is committing the murders and why are important to Clare as the reputation and future of The Village Blend could suffer.

Each installment seems to be written with a slightly different twist (which is part of the success I am sure) and this one is a bit edgier and moves a bit more toward the Janet Evanovich style. The product that starts all this mess is an aphrodisiac so I will leave it at that for you to figure out my meaning. It also is interesting how periodically we are in the mind of the murderer to see how he/she is feeling and reacting to what is taking place. The identity remains a secret until the very end, but it is a helpful tool in adding some dimension to a genre that is often very linear. Also, the murders are a bit more graphic and happen "on screen" so to speak which is different from traditional cozies but it works well and adds action and variety. For folks who have complained before about the novels containing too much information on coffee, it is handled more lightly this time and there isn't as much in this book.

Bottom line: A great mystery with a plausible motive for the murder. A cast of characters that are evolving and growing. A strong sense of place and setting. In my opinion, another winner and remains the best series out there.

Another great installment in the series
By Annie B
Often when an author has written a series for a quite a while, the stories get a little, well, tired. This isn't true for Cleo Coyle. Murder by Mocha continues to keep the series' spark with another great story. It's a fun cozy mystery with all the trimmings. There's mystery, of course, friendship, family, twists and turns, everything needed for a completely satisfying cozy read.

The book is well written and, as usual, filled with a great, colorful cast and a solid mystery. To get the most out of this series, though, you want to start at the beginning, so you can see how the coffee house mystery characters grow and change. For sure, Murder by Mocha will hit just the right spot with fans of the series. Overall, good, fun cozy mystery!

Clare's Village Blend coffee beans are being used to create a new java love potion: a "Mocha Magic Coffee," billed as an aphrodisiac. The product, expected to rake in millions, will be sold exclusively on Aphrodite's Village, one of the most popular online communities for women.

But at its launch, one of the website's editors is murdered. Clare is convinced a bitter killer wants the secret formula. Can she catch who's gone loco for mocha?

Clare is not happy about the contract with Aphrodite's Village, not one bit. Unfortunately there's nothing she can do about it since it was Madame who signed it. She has a feeling that this could destroy the Blend if anything goes wrong.
With the death of one of the Aphrodite "Sisters" Clare has to bring out all the big guns and find out who the actual killer is, the real motive and make sure that none of her "extended family" are hurt in the process. With the help of Matt, Mike, Franco, Madame and her staff of baristas Clare will winnow out the answers to each level of the mystery and come out smelling like a rose.
This is the tenth book in the Coffeehouse Mystery series, and to my mind, the most complex storyline to date. In this book Cleo Coyle has fully shown the depth of her ability as a mystery author, not just a cozy one. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series with baited breath.
Writing as Alice Kimberly she is also the author of the "Haunted Bookshop Mysteries". Cleo Coyle can be found hanging out at [...]... and also at [...]

Soaring Romance, Epic Battles, Unforgettable Characters, What More Could You Want ..(Reading Order Included)
By Douglas C. Meeks
Where do I start with this book? How about it falls into the category where I want more than 5 Stars to rate it? It grabbed me almost from the first pages and never let go until the breathless ending.

Angels have died, some vampires have contracted an incurable illness, the world is at the brink of war and that is just the start of things. Needless to say, I am officially notifying you that boredom is not within these pages.

The romance between Raphael and Elena which we might have forgotten a bit is brought back to us in this novel as a force that is unending and is the type that is "life is not worth living without you" becoming a statement of fact and not just a proclamation of love.

Most of this novel is spent on a trilogy of plotlines:

- The depth of the love of Raphael and Elena
- The mystery of who and why concerning the illness/damage to the angels/vampires of Raphael's New York
- Elena's family history and current situation (we get a bit more info on her family's past)

I say "most" because the final few chapters are more action oriented in the typical epic mold, I found the ending of this book on the level of the ending of "Return of the King", high praise indeed folks.
I am not going to disassemble the plots in this review since that is why we read books but this is a great book and somewhere in the final 100 pages you will have to remember to breathe it gets so intense.

Hang on for a wild ride but the ending would not be as intensive if not for the skillful way Ms. Singh manipulates her readers into the proper mood to make the ending the high mark that it is, well done once more by one of the genre's best authors.

5 Stars because that is all I can give, it is worth more, trust me.

Bottom Line: This paragraph is almost a repeat of an earlier one but it belongs here. This is what 5 Star reading should be, having you glued to the pages and leaving you with a thirst for more without making you mad that the book ended. A romance for the ages and a overarching story that you can't stop thinking about until the next book. Make no mistake; on the 29th of October when this is released, THIS is what you need to be reading. Just a clue, you won't understand the title until the last couple of chapters. There are books that are just as good (a very few) but there are none I can say are better, this is one of those that falls into the "THIS is why I read these books" category that has a extremely small number of books as its companion.

Reviewer's Note: I would strongly suggest that any reader start with book 1 of this series to enjoy the excellence of this novel.

Series Reading Order:
1. Angels' Blood: The Guild Hunter Series
2. Archangel's Kiss (Guild Hunter)
3. Archangel's Consort (Guild Hunter)
4. Archangel's Blade (Guild Hunter)
5. Archangel's Storm (Guild Hunter)
6. Archangel's Legion (Guild Hunter)
7. Guild Hunter #7 - 2014
8. Guild Hunter #8 - 2015

A GraveTells Review: One of the best Guild Hunter novels yet!
By DaVinciKittie
Guild Hunter novels are always so intense they cause me to lose sleep and stress out about a happy ending. This series, folks, is urban fantasy at its finest. Throughout the story, I couldn't get enough of Elena and Raphael and Illium, but I was also thrilled to get to know a few of the other members of The Seven better. Naasir and Aodhan both have significantly larger parts in this book than in any of the previous ones and their character development is superb. I'm already speculating about the relationship between illium and Aodhan, and what the heck is Naasir anyway? It was fab getting to see Honor and Dmitri again (and especially to hear her commentary on his, ah, skills), as well as newly-in-love spymaster Jason.

The action in this book is beyond intense and the last 30 pages just about killed me, my heart was racing so fast the entire time. Ms. Singh really amped up the danger level for ALL the characters in this one and held off on revealing the big development until right at the end. It made me crazy and jittery and glued to the pages! The story also wrapped up nicely after the nearly-traumatic ending, so there's enough time to come down from the ledge and take a safe breath again, get our proverbial feet under us before we have to wait another many months for the next installment. I want to avoid spoilers as much as possible but I will say this...

No matter what it feels like while reading the final chapter of this book, take comfort in knowing that it does NOT have a cliffhanger ending and it is totally worth the ride! I'm both glad it's over and impatiently awaiting the next chapter in this scintillating and addicting universe! Long live the Guild Hunter series!! This series, and Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling world, might as well be the raison d'etre for the urban fantasy genre!

Heart-stopping, beautiful, romantic, game-changing
By Angela
Just when I think Nalini Singh can't possibly outdo herself, she proves me wrong. From the earliest pages in this book, until I turned the very last one, I was on the edge of my seat - unable to think of anything but needing to know what happened next.

I'm not even sure how to review this book without fan-girling, I loved it so much. I've read the whole thing twice now and done scenes even more.

This is the fourth full-length novel focusing on Raphael and Elena - and despite my thoughts that their story was pretty much told in Archangel's Consort, there's still plenty to explore as evidenced here. I've always loved the relationship dynamic between Elena and Raphael. There's such a huge power differential and, unlike a lot of books that will just gloss that over and make it seem like it's dealt with, Nalini Singh continues to actually deal with it. Raphael is a centuries old Archangel - one of the most powerful beings in the world - and Elena is a new-immortal, with only twenty-some years of life behind her. That alone will create a gulf that a lot of people might not be able to overcome. Yet, Raphael and Elena are continuously negotiating their boundaries...in a smart, intelligent, caring way - they talk about it. When something comes up that is going to press up against Elena, potentially leaving her in a very large power deficit, she finds the words to discuss it with Raphael and he listens. They may not always resolve it satisfactorily for them both right away, but they're always working towards that. That, right there, shows their love for each other so clearly to me.

The overarcing plot of the book, I'll admit, had me in tears more than once. The first scene with angels falling from the sky was heart-wrenching, the aftermath as much so. It's clear for most of the book that things are coming to a head; there are overt signs of war, and insidious signs of something else - something that's nearly stalking Raphael, and we're not quite sure what it is. It's a challenge for him, though, that's for sure - and again, it's Elena that helps keep him grounded, a little bit mortal, if you will. I was on the edge of my seat the entire book; I had to know what was going on. The last 100 or so pages are so intense that I stayed up until 2am just to finish; I immediately turned to the beginning and started again so I could take the journey a little more leisurely.

Also, we finally get to learn more about Naasir - and can I just say what he manages to do with just two other people in the climactic scene was amazing, and made me grin completely unexpectedly. Raphael's Seven, and Elena's friends play important roles in this novel, and as always I'm left wanting more. They're, each and every one, fantastic.

Archangel's Legion is a thrill ride of a novel, heart-wrenching, exciting, beautiful, romantic and absolutely game-changing. I was blown away, and I can not wait to see what's next!
