Decent cozy mystery, but I had to consciously suspend my disbelief

I bought this book after reading and enjoying A Deadly Grind, without realizing that Freezer I'll Shoot was #3 in the series. So I bought and read Bowled Over first. If I'd done so, I might have skipped this one altogether. This cozy mystery is okay, but even in book #3 the series is showing signs of strain.
The premise is perfectly fine. Vintage cookware and cookbook collector Jaymie Leighton, whom we met in the first novel, has expanded her business efforts to creating retro picnic baskets for tourists in her small town on the Michigan-Canadian border (complete with vintage melamine and so forth as well as local foodstuffs). In this novel, Jaymie is supervising plumbing renovations on her family's home on Heartbreak Island (which is both U.S. and Canada). When a dead body is found in the middle of the project, her next-door-neighbors are implicated, and of course Jaymie is compelled to find out who the murderer REALLY is.
Standard cozy mystery stuff, especially when accompanied by a fun setting, engaging characters, and an educational fillip. I certainly read the whole book without ever considering dumping it. But I was disappointed, first in Bowled Over and then here in Freezer I'll Shoot.
The biggest weakness here is one that is a challenge for every cozy mystery: Why does this amateur feel the need to do all the investigating on her own? Good ones make that process a natural one. But in these two books, Jaymie ought to have picked up the phone and told the cops, "I just learned from so-and-so that the victim told him..." rather than running off half-cocked to follow up on a rumor. Plus, she comes across as a meddling busybody and gossip rather than as a True Friend or other acceptable role for amateur sleuth.
Sometimes that weakness is balanced by a great setting, or learning something cool and new (as with the vintage kitchen gizmo in the first book), or marvelous characters. None of those story elements are terrible, here, but they aren't especially compelling either. We don't get much more vintage kitchen knowledge, the friends-and-relations bits feel contrived (it's one thing to leave clues for the next book in the series, but I heard them landing on the table with a loud clunk), and I was annoyed by Jaymie constantly struggling to write an article. ("If it's that hard, kid," I thought, "Give it up. How can you want to write a cookbook if you can't get it together to write an article?") At least Hoppy the dog gets some good attention in this novel.
This sounds like I'm saying this is a rotten book that you should avoid. I don't mean it to do so. I _did_ keep reading all the way through, and even if I guessed some of the story details I didn't figure out all of them. I was engrossed enough to read #3 even after #2 made me a little grumpy. It't just that it took effort to suspend my disbelief, instead of me oozing effortlessly into someone else's world. As a result, if there's a #4 in this series I probably won't bother.

Heartbreak Island... was it or wasn't it?

Victoria Hamilton has done it again. This time she took us to Heartbreak Island where Jamie and her parents are planning the annual family dinner. This summer it will include Jamie's special friend, Daniel and his parents. It looks like the dinner may have to be on the mainland when the septic tank and other plumbing problems occur at the cottage. While Jamie's mom and Daniels argue over where the dinner is going to be held, Jamie stumbles over yet another body. This one on the cottage torn up back yard. Enter the ever so handsome detective Zack and you have a recipe for fun. It was nice to get to know some of the residents of Heartbreak Island. As I read, I could smell the water and feel the humid air. The characters of Heartbreak Island are as lovable as the ones on the mainland. Victoria had me guessing, then second guessing myself and even giving a third guess as to who the culprit was. It's almost one of those "I sure didn't see that one coming" books. I love it and can't wait for the next one to come out.

Freezer I'll Shoot by Victoria Hamilton

The third book in the Vintage Kitchen series by Victoria Hamilton is Freezer I'll Shoot. Fans of the series love the vintage cooking utensils and recipes that Hamilton includes in the series, as well as, the first rate mysteries. Hamilton has a way with words that is descriptive, yet simple. Her mysteries aren't easy to figure out and she doesn't give it all away too quickly. Freezer I'll Shoot lands Jaymie Leighton, the main character in the middle of another murder case and readers will be frantic to help her figure out who put an ice pick through the heart of one of the townspeople.
There is so much to like about this series. The theme behind the series, of vintage cooking and recipes is a favorite of mine. I like the old style cooking techniques and bakeware that Hamilton describes, just about as much as the mysteries she creates. She imparts a lot of knowledge to the reader in each book about how things were done in the old days and makes them wish they were there. I know that I wish I could cook like my grandmother did and this series reminds me of that and will probably make a lot of readers nostalgic.
The mystery in this one was of particular interest to me. The name of a local restaurant is The Ice House because it was once the location of the town ice house and still has all the ice picks and utensils. Finding a murder victim with an ice pick in his chest logically leads the police to the Redmonds, owners of the restaurant and neighbors of Jaymie's. I liked all of the information on why ice houses existed and what they were used for. It was easy to see that Hamilton did her research on this and it was informative, as well as, entertaining.
Urban Dorbrinski is the victim in this installment of the series and he has a lot of enemies, due to a very overactive temper. His wife and child have dealt with his rage for years and his recent altercation with Garnet Redmond leads several people to believe Garnet committed the murder. Especially since the body was found in between Jaymie's house and the Redmond home. But there's a whole lot more going on here than is first apparent. I liked the fact that I thought I had it all figured out and it turns out I was pretty far off base with this one. I love it when that happens. It's always such a surprise to figure out I was wrong.
Jaymie is a great character that really holds it all together in this book. She is inquisitive and full of surprises. She loves cooking about as much as she loves sleuthing. I think Hamilton does a great job with her. She has some issues in her personal life to be sure and that adds a human element to the story. Her mother and the mother of her boyfriend are at odds. Her relationship with Daniel isn't exactly perfect and the local law enforcement agency has quite a detective in Zach. But where does Jaymie's heart really life... not sure yet, but I'm interested enough to keep reading this series to find out!
