From Publishers Weekly
Previously issued as a paperback original under the pseudonym Leigh Nichols, this is one of Koontz's better thrillers. Single parent Christine Scavello and her young son Joey find themselves confronted by a madwoman, Grace Spivey, who fancies she discerns the Antichrist in Joey's cherubic visage. Spivey is the charismatic leader of a religious cult whose fanatic members do her every bidding, including murdering the little boy, and everyone who stands in their way. After the police fail to provide adequate protection, Christine turns to private detective Charlie Harrison, whose business and home are soon firebombed by the cultists, and two of his men murdered, even as he finds that he is falling in love with Christine. The narrative moves along briskly until the last third, at which point a frantic chase sequence goes on too long. Nevertheless, this is a better than average adventure with supernatural overtones. The possibility of Joey's actually being the Antichrist is a deftly handled (and unresolved) tease.

The best Koontz book among the old ones
By Marco Aurelio
Impossible to put down. That's how you could define that book if asked to define it in one sentece. But more than this, the book is beyond any other kind of entertainment. I tried reading this book 'cause I was trying to get used to reading books in English. And that was the best book by Dean Koontz I've ever read. You'll never be able to forget the mother and the child, that soon start to get into a sea of deadly problems. The plot comes up as one of the best ever written, and the author just doesn't allows you to do any other thing but read the book, because that's all you want to do when you start page one of THE SERVANTS OF TWILIGHT. Since then, I never read other book by Dean to like as much as I liked that. But that may change from reader to reader. Only one thing is certain: the plot will make you be on the edge of you seat the whole time.

A Captivating Read
By pomuzak
I am a huge Dean Koontz fan, and I have thoroughly enjoyed most of the books I have read of his, but I thought this one stood out among them. In all of Koontz's books that I have read, I have found myself saying "Yeah right, this is ridiculous and could never happen". Even in my personal favorite Koontz novel, Lightning, i found many things unbelievable. But in The Servants of Twilight, Dean Koontz crafts a believable AND enjoyable storyline.
Christine Scavello has a young son, Joey, who is an exceptional little boy who is very well behaved, and never gets into trouble. That is until one day, after a routine trip to the supermarket, a crazed old woman begins following Joey, believing that he is the Antichrist. At first this sounds insane, but then you realize that religious cults can indeed be as crazy as this particular villain, Grace Spivey. Christine hires a PI, Charlie, to help her escape the looney woman, and as in all other Koontz novels, they fall in love. It's very interesting to see the story unfold from all angles. You see the book from the point of view of the villain and the victims, so it is much more interesting. The book has many twists and turns to bring you to the end, and believe me, it's worth it. I highly recommend this book to any Koontz fan!

Cheated
By Steve Kowalski
Dean Koontz has remarked that he'd rather be known as a suspense writer than as a horror writer. I think he manages that very well.

The reason I like Koontz books is because they begin so mysteriously; odd events unexpectedly cropping up in the lives of ordinary people. The author engages the reader, immersing him/her in the world of the characters, unfolding the story with skill.

Koontz books are page-turners, certainly, and this one is no exception. But, for my money, a suspense book should end leaving me satisfied that the mystery I was plunged into from page one has now been explained.

Disappointingly, this was not the case with The Servants of Twilight. Oh, yes, it has a protagonist, an antagonist, and a climax, as novels do. (I won't spoil the story for you here as some other reviews have done, either.) I read most of it in two days; it was that interesting and gripping. In fact, all through The Servants of Twilight there is an absolutely terrific tension, one that I have rarely encountered in fiction, a tension driving you to keep reading to discover the truth. I was waiting for its resolution up until the final page--and it never came.

This novel falls squarely into that genre of story that leave "what really happened" entirely up to the reader. There is ample evidence throughout so that a number of opposing conclusions could be argued for and supported by the story. This was clearly intended by Koontz, but it left me with a hollow, cheated feeling. Is the glass half full, or half empty? You decide. The author didn't.

I have given the book only 2 stars in the rating because I don't like this kind of "choose your own interpretation" in a suspense book. Your mileage may vary. If you don't mind it, you'll probably rate it higher. But at least you've been forewarned. In every other way, it was a great book.

Thanks for reading my review.

Review
The romantic novelist Nora Roberts is quite inhumanly prolific ... Well plotted and well written ... Robb avoids excessive detail about their actions, describing instead the effect on the victims. Dallas is tireless and undaunted in her pursuit of the abductor. This book deserves its inevitable place on the bestseller list. Literary Review

5 Blue Ribbons from Romance Junkies!
By Lily
In the mid-twenty-first century, NYPSD Lieutenant Eve Dallas is facing possibly her worst nemesis yet: paperwork. Just as Eve finds herself wishing for a murder that would spring her from paperwork hell, something worse comes along.

Isaac McQueen - a violent pedophile Eve took down not long after she became a police officer - has escaped prison. McQueen seems more than eager to get back to raping and torturing young girls, but he's added an additional target to his list: Eve. McQueen's sick cat-and-mouse game will take Eve and her husband Roarke from New York to Dallas, where the demons of Eve's past will collide with the terrifying danger that taking down McQueen presents.

Enter the explosively exciting world of Eve and Roarke in NEW YORK TO DALLAS. Author J.D. Robb brings the full gamut of emotions to the table in NEW YORK TO DALLAS and readers are sure to experience every one. I laughed, I cried, I sighed, I smiled, I relaxed and curled up with the book, then I tensed and sat up straight as I eagerly turned the pages.

As one might expect from the lack of "In Death" in the title, J.D. Robb shakes things up in NEW YORK TO DALLAS. Taking Eve out of New York doesn't just equal a location change. She's in unfamiliar territory, doesn't have her partner, her squad, her commander or the familiar resources she's used to. It was interesting, for me, to see Eve in such a situation. What's more, Dallas isn't just any location. As fans of the series know, Dallas is where Eve's life was irrevocably changed. I won't provide any spoilers, but it should come as no surprise that the ghosts of Eve's past - a past she's thought she'd mostly come to terms with - are added to the strain of trying to capture McQueen. I loved the character growth this aspect of the story brought to Eve, even as it broke my heart. And it wasn't only my heart breaking. Roarke, Eve's husband, is with her every step of the way. Not only do we see more of his character development come about - and I won't say why or how - but the progression their marriage makes in NEW YORK TO DALLAS is simply beautiful to watch. In many ways, Eve and Roarke make a unique couple. But one of the things I love most about them as husband and wife is the fact that they have the "everyday" little problems couples have, not just big ones; they have to cope with both in this book.

A host of new characters are seamlessly introduced in NEW YORK TO DALLAS. I grew to love them almost as much as I do Eve and Roarke's friends. Two of McQueen's victims, in particular, grabbed my attention - and Eve's - and it's not just their courage which captivated me, but what they show about Eve that makes me hope I'll see them again.

There's a reason Ms. Robb's dynamic IN DEATH series is still wildly popular more than forty books and novellas in. The books may be set in the future, but the themes of love, friendship, loss, pain, survival, courage, hope, despair, good and evil are universal. Too, the strengths, flaws and quirks of Eve, Roarke and their friends makes the characters not only loveable, but relatable.

NEW YORK TO DALLAS is the thirty-third full-length novel in the IN DEATH series, but Ms. Robb weaves in enough background for readers new to the world of Eve and Roarke to follow along. Fans of the series will, however, be in for a special treat, as there are so many moments in NEW YORK TO DALLAS that show just how far Eve and Roarke have come.

Ms. Robb brings her A-game to NEW YORK TO DALLAS. Love, intelligence, hard work and twisted-as-hell evil are a brilliant combination in the hands of someone like Ms. Robb. She has the ability to make even a predictable surprise plot twist feel like a sucker punch to the gut. That ability to bring forth such strong emotions is why I've been a fan of J.D. Robb/Nora Roberts for more than half my lifetime and why I continue to look forward to each new book of hers. NEW YORK TO DALLAS is captivating from beginning to end, and I finished it eager to see where Ms. Robb takes Eve and Roarke next!

Wow - Takes you to the edge and flings you over
By D.C.
I will start by saying I feel this is the best In Death book.

If you are new to the series, I would not start with this one. There is such history to get to this point, that I feel you would not enjoy it as much.

Not sure where to start, I don't want to put any spoilers in this because that is one of the things I loved about it was seeing how it unfolded. I was not particularly surprised by what happened, but it flowed so wonderfully that I would not want to ruin any of it for you.

For fans, we got a lot of Eve/Roarke. Because it takes place in another city, the normal cast is there, but not the way it normally is. They introduce us to people Eve met before the series started and we get to know Eve better. What is most striking about this book, is the relationship between Eve and Roarke. We all love him, who wouldn't. But you see the bonds very strongly and you also see the striking difference between the Eve we met 33 books ago to the woman she is today.

There were times I literally had to set the book down and walk away, one because I did not want it to end, and 2 because I felt so much for Eve. This one will make you really feel the emotions, and that is an Excellent book.

So many series devolve at this point, and the last two books have really been some of the best work to date.

This book is worth the Hardback price.

Enjoy, and if you are new to the series do yourself a favor and start with the beginning. It is overall an excellent series. There were a couple books in it I did not love, maybe 4 out of all of them, and they were still really good.

NY2D is a a terrific "in Death" novel
By Sherri Rowlands
NY2D was waiting for me on my Kindle when I woke up. I eagerly started reading but work got in the way. Every possible break, I read a little more. I got home from work and read non-stop until I finished it, way too late but worth it.
I thought the one-time name change was a big mistake, but having read the book I couldn't come up with a good "in Death" name unless it was "Monsters in Death" because Eve deals with a couple of monster bad guys. I loved the story, the character development, and wrenching self-discovery that Eve goes through. I felt I was standing by just as helplessly as Roarke as Eve battled personal monsters with the live ones. The bad guys got a couple of lucky breaks which normally would have me rolling my eyes in disbelief but these were very plausible and truly well-written.
This book takes place in a totally new environment for Eve and it made me laugh as she deals with the Dallas police and Feds. A great new cast of characters for the series and I hope she keeps in touch with a few of them.
NY2D is now my favorite book of the series, at least until the next one comes along. :)

The Worst Thing (Berkley Prime Crime), by Aaron Elkins

For Bryan Bennett, designing hostage negotiation programs is the perfect job—as long as he doesn’t deal directly with kidnappers or their victims. Intense nightmares of his own abduction and imprisonment as a small boy still plague him thirty-some years later, and claustrophobia prevents him from attempting to travel.

So when Bryan’s boss asks him to fly to Reykjavik to teach his corporate-level kidnapping and extortion seminar, he initially refuses. But a CEO has specifically requested Bryan—or no one else. Finally Bryan relents…

For decades he’s treaded gingerly around his deepest terrors. Now, on this trip, Bryan’s taken hostage again and must face his fears full-on. Will he realize that in this battle of will and nerve, he is his own greatest enemy? Or has this fight already been lost years ago?

Low-key yet gripping
By Jonathan A. Turner
Most "psychological thrillers" are overwrought to the point of melodrama. _The Worst Thing_ is different. For one thing, it's about real (not pop) psychology. For another, its suspense comes not from the menace of a Hannibal Lecter-esque villain, but from the protagonist's own inner demons. It'd make a good movie ... but you'd need some top-notch actors.

Elkins makes the interesting and mildly unusual choice to have most of the book narrated in the first person. This works out well on a couple of levels. The protagonist, Brian Bennett, is shown to be a likeable and grounded sort of guy. We see those inner demons from *his* point of view, which makes them understandable. It's a way of showing that Brian's troubles differ from yours or mine--if they do--only in degree, not in kind. So when Brian gets put through the wringer, you'll find yourself with that uneasy feeling: what if this happened to me?

I have but one kvetch to make, and it's minor. There's a surprise in the last chapter, which is interesting and perfectly foreshadowed, but which doesn't dovetail strongly with the action in the book's body. The book would be even stronger if the final revelation brightly re-illuminated what's happened and why. There is a connection--it's just a little muted.

That aside, this is a superb display of Aaron Elkins's usual top-notch craftsmanship. The pacing is superb, the characters are well-drawn, and the resolution is satisfying. I was initially reminded of two classic Dick Francis novels (_Risk_ and _The Danger_), but _The Worst Thing_ ultimately goes in its own direction. It's less about what the hero *can* do, and more about what he *will* do.

Living a Life Ruled by Fear of Abduction
By Fairbanks Reader - Bonnie Brody
When Bryan Bennett was five years old he was kidnapped and held for ransom for 58 days. Taken from the Turkish compound where his father worked, Bryan was held in very primitive conditions and treated poorly. When he was released, he writes that "doctors found two dozen ulcerating sores on my body as a result of malnutrition and poor hygiene. I had lost nine pounds - more than 20 percent of my body weight - I had gum abscesses, infections in both eyes and a raging case of dysentery. I was too weak to walk".

As an adult, Bryan began his career as a hostage negotiator but found that direct involvement with kidnappers and their victims was too close to home. He ends up writing curriculum and making presentations on corporate safety, extortion, and kidnapping prevention for the Odysseus Institute for Corporate Protection in Seattle.

When his boss asks him to go to Iceland to make a presentation there, he at first refuses. Bryan suffers from horrific panic attacks exacerbated by some situations such as flying on airplanes. His wife really wants to go and Bryan reluctantly agrees. He finds out later, however, that the CEO of the company in Iceland has recently been the victim of a botched kidnapping attempt.

Bryan uses xanax, a tranquilizer, to deal with his panic attacks which usually come at night. These night attacks wax and wane in frequency and severity. Once he agrees to go to Iceland, the attacks come on full force despite his seeing a therapist and receiving some cognitive behavioral therapy to address this problem.

Aaron Elkins' book, The Worst Thing, is about Bryan's worst fear - being kidnapped again. Though the odds of a second kidnapping are statistically miniscule, Bryan lives daily with this horrible fear of being kidnapped. The post-traumatic stress from his first kidnapping has never been resolved. As his wife says, "my abduction had left me with some extremely heavy baggage to lug around but also with a compulsive interest in, or perhaps even an obsession (her term) with kidnapping, extortion and captivity. That is, I was scared to death of anything to do with them, but fascinated at the same time".

In Iceland, Bryan begins conducting his seminar and in short order ends up in the hands of kidnappers, along with the CEO of the company for whom he is doing the presentation. The group of four kidnappers form an amateurish group of eco-terrorists who call themselves the VBJ. Bryan's xanax is confiscated and Bryan must face his deep-seated fears and terrors once again. Though rationally more prepared than the average person, fear is irrational and Bryan must again relive The Worst Thing he can imagine.

Elkins gives the best description of a panic attack that I've ever read outside of a textbook. He also gets the psychopathic personality down pat. The book is a fine thriller and filled with suspense from the beginning. One can feel Bryan's fear and terror along with him and the author's use of the first person works very well. I enjoy a good thriller and this one held me in its grips throughout.

Excellent - 4 1/2 stars - Very suspenseful but rushed ending
By CJ-MO
Bryan Bennett of Redmond, Washington designs hostage negotiation programs. Bryan believes every life has a defining moment and that his occurred when he was five years old. Bryan remembers being kidnapped in Istanbul and held for two months in an underground cell. Now as an adult, Bryan suffers from severe panic attacks, claustrophobia, and the fear of being kidnapped in the future. Bryan is able to conduct research and prepare lectures and training materials related to hostage situations, but is not able to work with kidnappers or their victims, or even take part in a direct discussion of the subject.

In spite of his overwhelming fears, Bryan accepts an assignment to meet with a client in Iceland. He wants to treat his wife Lori to this trip to make up for prior travel opportunities they've declined because of Bryan's phobias. Bryan plans to take medications to get through the flights and tempts fate by telling himself the trip will be great, because after all "what was the worst that could happen?"

"The Worst Thing" is an exciting, suspenseful novel. The main character, Bryan Bennett, is sympathetic and likeable. Brian really wants to get better, but doesn't think it's possible. I was rooting for him throughout the book to be able to conquer his fears and lead a happy life with his wife Lori. Lori plays a major role in the story, but the book's focus is on Bryan. The author gives us many insights into what Bryan is thinking, but not Lori. I liked Lori, but wasn't able to connect with her character the same way I was with Bryan.

Bryan's friend, the psychologist Zeta Parkington, is a wonderful supporting character. Zeta is not the usual therapist found in fiction. She is in her seventies and smokes cigars. She's intelligent, independent, and outspoken. Although she's straight-talking and doesn't mince words, she is caring and is truly concerned about Bryan's well-being. I think the author could create entire series centered on this distinctive character!

The book is very well-researched. In addition to information about psychology and hostage negotiation, there are also many details about the unique Icelandic setting. The author describes places of interest, traditions, and customs of Iceland which help the reader to experience the country right along with Bryan and Lori.

From the title alone, as well as the first few chapters, there is a sense of foreboding that something terrible is going to happen. However, the twists and turns the story takes are unpredictable and thrilling and keep you guessing until the very end. The conclusion is great, but the final few paragraphs seem to wrap up reactions to a shocking revelation a little too quickly. I still thoroughly enjoyed the book in spite of the slightly rushed ending.

This stand-alone novel by Aaron Elkins is much different in style from the author's scholarly Gideon Oliver mystery series. The Worst Thing is more comparable to a suspense novel by Linwood Barclay or a psychological thriller by Jonathan Kellerman. If you're looking for a book to keep you on the edge of your seat, this fast-paced thriller is just the thing.

The best yet!
By Windy198
I have followed this series from book one, have loved each book and anxiously awaited publication of the next; however, this is the best yet. Loved Ollie from the very first book and as the series has developed I have become more and more enthralled with each of the main characters. Although the plot in this one differs from prior books it certainly does keep Ollie closely involved with her White House duties. Julie`s mystery plot made it extremely hard to put the book down. I love how the relationship with Gav is developing. Sitting here twiddling my thumbs waiting for the next book!! And for anyone who has not yet read any of the series, start with book one and work your way to this one - it will mean so much more to you.

A Wonderful Treat
By K. M. Halbig
Each entry in Julie Hyzy's White House Chef series is better than the one before. We receive new insights into characters we already know and also learn intimate details about life inside the bubble of the White House, both for the First Family and for the enormous staff it takes to make everything run smoothly.

This time Olivia Paras' mystery was personal. Why was her father allowed to be buried at Arlington when he had received a dishonorable discharge from the army? White House social events take a back seat in this mystery, but Ollie builds upon her relationship with First Son, Josh, and the First Lady. It was so nice to see that Ollie continued to be a strong, independent woman while having a man who loved and supported her, instead of telling her she was a nuisance. It was inevitable that I would finish this book quickly as the story was so interesting, but now I have to wait for Ms. Hyzy to concoct another tasteful adventure to enjoy.

Although the mystery in this book stands alone, I think the reader would get more enjoyment from it if she read each of the White House Chef books in order and was able to fully embrace the character development from "State of the Onion" on.

A Must Read for White House Chef fans!
By NC State Karen
I really enjoyed this newest book in the White House Chef series. This one is a little different, as Ollie is looking into the death of her father 25 years earlier. I am a fan of what I recently found out are called 'cozy mysteries' and this fits the mold. Farily PG, murder mystery style mostly with female heroines. It is an easy read and not the kind of book that you will lose sleep over. So, for this mom, it is perfect bedtime reading.

India Black, full-time madam and occasional secret agent, is feeling restless, when one of Disraeli's men calls on her to meet the prime minister--alone. Even though all her previous meetings have been organized by the rakishly handsome spy French, it's been decided this is a mission India must attempt on her own.

Revolt has spread across Europe and reached the shores of England--anarchists have begun assassinating lords and earls, one by one. Now India must infiltrate the ranks of the underground group responsible for those attacks, the sinister Dark Legion. To stop their dread plot, India will go from the murkiest slums of London to the highest levels of society, uncovering secrets that threaten her very existence...

(4.5 stars) The best one yet. When's the next one out?
By OLT
India Black, brothel madam-cum-British spy is on to her third adventure, after India Black (A Madam of Espionage Mystery) and India Black and the Widow of Windsor (A Madam of Espionage Mystery). (A nice little extra novella, India Black and the Rajah's Ruby (A MADAM OF ESPIONAGE MYSTERY), is also available and gives readers the background on how India came to be the owner of her very own brothel.)

In this one India's mission for Prime Minister Disraeli is to infiltrate an anarchist cell, the Dark Legion. Anarchy in the late 1800s was strong in England, emboldened by the dissatisfaction of the oppressed worker class and their resentment of the priviledged upper class. Government officials and lords alike were afraid for their lives, with all-too-frequent bombings and other attacks even hurting innocent people. India begins her assignment solo this time. French, the British spy who recruited her in the first book, is off, mysteriously, somewhere else.

That's all I'll say about the plot but I enjoyed this book even more than the previous ones. India is in full humorous, snarky, cynical mode and the story is from her unique POV and written in the first person. Some people are not fond of first person POV narrative but it really works here, given India's really funny, saucy, take-charge, no-nonsense attitude. She's smart and resourceful and has her head on straight, seeing the bad and good in everyone, but mostly expecting the bad. You need to read this without skipping or skimming because you won't want to miss any of her humorous (often LOL) observations about things, people and life in general.

This is historical mystery, not romance, and has lots of insight into the politics, culture and social conditions of the late Victorian era. If you're fond of romance you have to be a very patient romance reader. There's a budding relationship between India and French, but it's going really, really slowly. However, if you consider that the first book takes place in the winter of 1876 and this third one takes place in the spring of 1877, it's a very realistic time frame for romance to develop between two people from two very different walks of life.

What I really love about this third book is that we get lots more info about the mysterious, handsome British agent French. And India's past and parentage is slowly being uncovered. All good stuff.

Oh boy. What fun!
By Esther Schindler
You initially might not think a madam in a Victorian brothel is a workable heroine for a spy novel. But, as Carol K. Carr has demonstrated in her two earlier India Black novels, it's impossible to resist the intelligent, smartass character of India -- or the deft way that the author imparts a tale full of history-based intrigue.

In this novel, the government comes directly to India to ask her to infiltrate those nasty anarchists. The anarchists, on the run from their own lands (like Russia or France), recently have had the gall to knock off several highly-placed Englishmen, and that simply won't DO. As the prime minister and his henchmen have discovered, one of the connections to the anarchists is a prostitute at a rival brothel, and the gummint wants India to acquire the young woman, her knowledge, and her contacts. And that's just the beginning.

That easily could be done as a serious, even a depressing story. But it's a _funny_ book, because India is clever and snarky and the story is told in rather a light manner. The "mystery" is excellent; I never guessed what would happen next. Mostly, the writing is fabulous, imparting both character and attitude (OH BOY does she have attitude!): "[Character] charged through my study door like a Jersey cow whose calf I had taken for weaning. She was a stowt old bawd, with a Falstaffian girth and a course grey mustache fit for a sergeant major." Or "...I had spent my youth dodging predators through the streets of London and French [her spying partner whom we met in other books] had spent his sitting in some drab schoolroom with other little poncy bastards, conjugating Latin verbs."

(For those who are bothered by the setting in a brothel, I note that there's no actual sex shown, just intimated -- that the whores are paired off with the gents for the night, for example, or India admiring a fetching young man whom she thinks might be fun to get together with for an evening.)

I started reading the book and... well, I didn't do a whole lot else with my free time until I finished. This book is wonderful fun reading. It _could_ stand alone, but do yourself a favor and start with the first one, India Black. You won't be sorry.

India Black Takes Charge
By F. Yoder
This is the third book in the wonderful A Madam Of Espionage Mystery series.

India Black is the madam of a high-class brothel in Victorian England, but is also a secret agent, along with French, for Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli.

In this book India get to showcase her prowess at being a secret agent. P.M. Disraeli summons India to his office, to meet with him and Superintendent Stoke of Scotland Yard. Anarchists are running rampant in London killing off lords and earls at will. They want India to infiltrate the Dark Legion, to determine who the leader is, and put a stop to the killings.

French is off on another mission for the PM so it all up to India to handle this matter. Stoke tells India a prostitute that works in Seven Dials might be able provide some information about who the members are. Being a little devious, India is able to convince the girl to come work for her, hoping the girl will be able to provide information needed to infiltrate the Dark Legion. India get a foothold in the legion and it helping plan further subversive events. Just when India is due to meet some the higher people in the Legion, French appears and with his help, India and French are able to break the Legion.

I am very happy to see that India was able to take the lead in this book. Hopefully in future books, she will also be able to take the lead, just to keep in the back of French's mind that she is capable of taking the lead.

I'm looking forward to the next book in this series and to see if there is a chance of India and French teaming up in more than their spying.

Best of the Accidental series
By Madison W Fairbanks
This newest book by Dakota Cassidy is in my opinion the best of the series.
Nina has a new sister and guess what? Phoebe is now an accidental vampire as well. With Nina at her sarcastic best, along with Marty and Wanda and newbie Sam, hilarity and mystery solving ensue.
It was fun, snarky, entertaining and typical Cassidy at the top of her game.

Fabulous and Funny
By Katrina
I love this series. There is just something compelling about the hilarious world of Dakota Cassidy. She's taken serious supernatural characters and actually given them difficult problems to overcome. But they do it all with an endearing silliness that is simply unparalleled. This book is a real page turner too, with enough suprises that it becomes impossible to put down. I would recomend these to anyone who loves humor, bc at the end of the day, the humor is the best part :)

Another beautiful installment
By Mandy
The girls are back this time with a strange vampire dropped on the doorsteps of the OOPs office. Other than having one crazy work party Sam wakes up in a dress after a one night stand to find out he's a vampire. As if that's not enough one of the councilors sisters just so happens to show up and he bites her butt. Now a stranger Phoebe is a vampire thanks to an accident but that's not all they aren't like any of the vampires in the area.

As the group deals with the surprise new vampires Nina has her own issues with her sister who she didn't know existed and is now a vampire showing up. While Phoebe didn't expect her sister to welcome her she hoped that they would have a chance to talk. As they learn that the vampire who made Sam mysteriously dies they start to investigate the company he's investigating learning that they may just be the ones who are making the vampire and time is running out.

I love that the prior girls keep showing up in each new book but we do have a couple that takes center stage. The chemistry between Sam and Phoebe is hot but at first she thinks he's in drag lol. It's a good thing that changes and they pair don't have to deny the attraction between them. Only Sam has a secret that may change everything that is if they make it out alive.

I've been a huge fan of the Accidental Friends series each book just keeps getting better and has new supernatural beings plus we get the prior characters intertwined. The urban fantasy concept is one of my favorite add in a happy ever after and a little humor it all just works out perfectly. I really enjoyed the twist on the vampires in Accidentally Dead, Again it jut works great. The characters are well developed and easy to connect with I just adore all the girls and the guys have all redeemed themselves. One of my favorite series each novel is captivating hard to put down and a beautifully written happy ever after. Highly recommend.

The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott, by Kelly O'Connor McNees

A richly imagined, remarkably written story of the woman who created Little Women- and how love changed her in ways she never expected.

Deftly mixing fact and fiction, Kelly O'Connor McNees returns to the summer of 1855, when vivacious Louisa May Alcott is twenty-two and bursting to free herself from family and societal constraints and do what she loves most. Stuck in small-town New Hampshire, she meets Joseph Singer, and as she opens her heart, Louisa finds herself torn between a love that takes her by surprise and her dream of independence as a writer in Boston. The choice she must make comes with a steep price that she will pay for the rest of her life.

From Publishers Weekly
McNees lightly imagines the life of Louisa May Alcott, whose Little Women has enjoyed generations-long success. The story begins with a 20-year-old Louisa unhappily moving with her family from Boston to Walpole, N.H., where her Transcendentalist philosopher father pursues a life sans material pleasure. Louisa, meanwhile, plans on saving enough money to return to Boston and pursue a career as a writer. Then she meets the handsome and charming Joseph Singer, who stirs up strong emotions in Louisa. Not wanting to admit that she is attracted to him, Louisa responds to Joseph with defensiveness and anger until, of course, she can no longer deny her feelings and becomes torn between her desires and her dreams. While certainly charming, the simply told, straightforward narrative reads like YA fiction. It'll do the trick as a pleasant diversion for readers with fond memories of Alcott's work, but the lack of gravity prevents it from becoming anything greater. (Apr.)

From Booklist
First-novelist McNees creates a previously unknown romantic affair for the author of Little Women. It took place, she imagines, in 1855 during the scantily documented summer the Alcotts spent in Walpole, New Hampshire. A handsome young merchant named Joseph Singer falls wildly in love with our Louisa, who is torn between reciprocal feelings for him and her passionate desire for personal independence and a career as a writer. The drama of the situation is compromised by a too-simplistic treatment of the characters and, of course, by the historical record, which shows that Alcott remained a self-styled spinster. Too, the infusion of issue-driven material involving women’s rights lends a somewhat didactic air to a work that is, after all, romantic fiction. To her credit, McNees does a good job of re-creating the nineteenth-century milieu, and her readers will doubtless be inspired to read more—about and by—Alcott. Little Women, anyone? --Michael Cart

Review
"McNees gets the period details just right: the crinolines and carriages; the spare, aesthetic plainness of 19th-century New England. And although the love affair with Joseph is invented, she remains faithful to the broad outlines of Alcott's biography. In fact, The Lost Summer is the kind of romantic tale to which Alcott herself was partial, one in which love is important but not a solution to life's difficulties. Devotees of Little Women will flock to this story with pleasure." -The Washington Post

"I have read Little Women at least a dozen times, but Kelly O'Connor McNees has given me a gift I will not soon forget. Louisa May Alcott is no longer simply an icon to me but a real woman in all her complexity, one who lived life in spite of exploitation and the expectations of her day, never giving up on her dream. Her story is as relevant today as when Alcott bravely made her way. I can't wait to give copies of this novel to all of my friends."
-Cassandra King, author of The Sunday Wife and The Same Sweet Girls

"Mixing fact drawn from Little Women author Louisa May Alcott's letters and journals with a longing to understand how Alcott-who is thought never to have been in love-could have written so movingly about it, Kelly O'Connor McNees delivers a wonderfully imagined, lively novel of first love herself. Louisa emerges as a spunky, honest heroine torn between her own personal love affair and the need to create more enduring stories that might console readers and lovers for generations to come."
-Meg Waite Clayton, author of The Wednesday Sisters

"A superb, thoughtful, and deliciously paced book that will hook lovers of history and Alcott alike. I enjoyed it tremendously."
-Terry Gamble, author of The Water Dancers and Good Family

"Richly imagined and gracefully told, McNees' captivating story will delight anyone who loved Alcott's feisty heroine Jo March."
-Judith Ryan Hendricks, best-selling author of Bread Alone

Excellent book. A valuable addition for any Alcott Fan.
By pebbles
This novel was an easy read yet set an intriguing plot that allowed the reader to imagine what might have happened one summer in the life of Louisa May Alcott. The author set the stage for the 1800's time frame and gave the reader a feel for what life was like in the small town of Walpole, New Hampshire. It also gave true insight into the dynamics of the Alcott family, the access the girls had to education and the hardships they endured from their father's philosophy. The heart of the story was the on again, off again romance between Louisa May and Joseph Singer. The experience definitely could have been life changing for the two. The final chapter did catch the reader up and answered many questions that came to mind from reading the story. The use of book quotes at the start of each chapter was a nice touch and reminded the reader of many great works that they might want to read again. This book is a must read for any Louisa May Alcott fan.

transcending genres
By Paul Grainger
If one is prepared to accept the premiss that Louisa May Alcott's classic novel Little Women is semi-autobiographical, and that Martha Saxton's biography of her is the definitive account, then Kelly O'Connor McNee's `The Lost Summer...' can be considered as the third part of a literary troika which gives a combined perspective of Louisa May's life and work.

Even setting such a notion aside, there is much to be gleaned from this novel, which is an imagination of events in Louisa May's life inspired by both Little Women and the biography.

The action takes place in the summer of 1855 when the family, on the insistence of father Alcott, who seems unable to settle in any particular place for long, lands in the New England town of Walpole. Louisa May, forever at odds with her father, would love to break away and seek her freedom and independence elsewhere - preferably in Boston - but out of loyalty to her mother and her sisters she stays in order to help them set up home.

She meets people, and one of them, a storeowner called Joseph Singer (a fictional character) brings love to her life. But Louisa May has a dream, a dream of becoming a writer, and so is presented with a dilemma: If she also settles in Walpole, marries Joseph and becomes a wife and mother, will she throw away a chance of fulfilling her dream?

Kelly O'Connor McNee has vividly evoked the nineteenth century period just before the American Civil War through her characterizations and her descriptions of real events that seamlessly blend with her fictional narrative. It is a quick and enjoyable read, with any loose ends nicely wrapped together in a satisfactory conclusion.

It must be said this novel contains many allusions to Little Women but it is no mirror image; Louisa May is very much the main focus and, although her father occasionally looms large, family members have lesser roles to play than in the original work.

A book for Alcott enthusiasts, although perhaps not for the scholarly type - it being written in a simple, straight forward prose style that doesn't really challenge the reader. Four stars.

Good Read
By Tina
I am a big fan of Louisa May Alcott and even had the chance to visit her homestead in Concord - it, therefore, made reading this book all that much fun - trying to imagine her in this home, living this story, as told by Kelly O'Connor Mcnees. This is a "what if" novel - which intrigued me. What if Alcott had owned up to her true passion for that "special" man - the one she is truly rumored to have been in love with? Would she have died lonely and single as she did? after all she did for the various members of her family?

I think the author wrote this book, in part, to answer this question that I believe many Alcott fans have. The Lost Summer is a fun read because it gives us the "right" to go through her life and to find out more about the person, especially the "woman" side of her - which, let's face it, we have not really read or heard all that much about in the past.

I liked this book because it was a great way to escape and go back in time to another time, with an author that I really like. It was almost like "invading her privacy" and reading Alcott's own thoughts - I am always a big fan of books that answer the burning "what if" questions and this one certainly did.

So, why the 3 stars? This YA was a tad too simplistic for me - I was hoping for something with a little more bite and intensity - a little too vanilla at times.
