Angry Aryal defies us to like her...and wins!

When I realized that Aryal's book was the next one in the series I was SO disappointed. Aryal was a character who was more of a cartoon than anything else. She was Angry Aryal who hated just about everyone and everything. It is just like her to be defiant enough to get us to like her and still be Angry Aryal. That was Thea's challenge in this book. She had to flush Aryal's character out in order to make the audience empathize with her and root for her. In order to do this Aryal needed to have more than one emotion. She would need to become a much more complex character AND she needed a mate who was her mirror. Quentin is as dominant as they come. There was less known about him so he might have been easier to write because he was more of a blank slate. The Elder Race full novels had hit a plateau. Drago's and Pia were a tough act to follow. Dragos is a fantastic character because he is ruthless, cunning, yet caring and patient with Pia in a way that was true to his character. Aryal is like Dragos in that way. Thea worked her magic with Drago's and she has done it again with Aryal. Quentin and Aryal has that cosmic chemistry that keeps the reader hooked to see what will happen next. I must warn readers that the sexual side of their relationship is not to for the faint of heart. They are aggressive and somewhat caustic personalities and this comes through in every area of their relationship. Normally, I would have shied away from this but in this book it worked and walked the line between too much and not enough just fine. Thea Harrison worked the magic that was lacking in Tiago's and Rune's books (at least for me). The Elder Races will maintain the edge that makes it a spectacular series and not fizzle out. The writer making such an unlikable character as Aryal will always be able to find ways to make miracles happen!!

Among the best in the series

Some reviewers have complained about being "tricked" into reading "trash" or S&M. This book has some slightly unconventional sex, but readers need to remember that signed up for fairly explicit content, especially since this series has never been shy. With that, the author can do what she wants. No one is being tricked into reading filthy content, and the way everything was handled in this book was pretty pro-female and not offensive to the reader. The author has the liberty of creating characters the way she wants to and if that doesn't fit in the traditional box of what's right and what's dirty then read a Harlequin series and play it safe. I liked that she took things in a bold direction.
The secondary storyline in this book was particularly strong. It felt like TH is finally hitting her stride. I'll admit that I wasn't thrilled by the 2nd and 3rd books in this series, with the books about Pia and Dragos being my favorites. The balance in Kinked between romance and action is superb. The setting is very cool, since they are exploring a basically deserted magical world. The bad guy is pretty creepy, and the main characters struggle pretty hard to achieve their goals. I loved the descriptions of some areas of the world they were exploring, and I really pictured what was going on.
The about-face of Aryal and Quentin's relationship from hate to like was abrupt but well-handled by the author. It was a little bizarre to see them think about how they had lusted after each other even while they were enemies. I don't think that is usually the case with peoples' emotions and I don't really like the trope of lust masquerading as anger/violence. That being said, the author did a great job of making the conflict stem from their personalities. Both of them were so different, with Aryal being perhaps more vibrant and interesting than Quentin. Their romance felt natural and passionate with a sweet ending. I wish we had learned more about them as people. I would love to read another book about the two of them and learn more about who they are!
Read: As a part of the series or as a standalone, even though some things will be complicated. DON'T read if you can't handle some rough but respectful sex. Do read if you want something beyond normal PNR and venturing into fantasy romance with darker elements.

Wow. I've always loved this author and this series. I avoided this particular book based on reviews....but I NEEDED to keep with the story line so after some time....I purchased the book. Okay first off....if your reading this book, then it's safe to say your a fan of paranormal romance. Have you ever read a romance that involved a harpy? They are dominant....deadly....destructive....it's their nature. This author had to find a way to KEEP the harpies quality but also make her lovable....love able enough to find a mate. Pic chose to rate this before finishing the book...because I got really pissed off at one point. I have less than maybe 30 min of the book to read and I've read possibly three sex scenes. ONE? Aryl was investigating (per as normal) and saw a MILD bondage scene....and was disturbed that she felt turned on by her sworn enemy. (Pile being handcuffs, a barked order and gush gush love love from the female who seemed only interested because he was the new sentinel). It left Quentin feeling un-fulfilled. In this series that's his whole angle. He has no idea WHAT drives him. Aryl, looking back? Same. So. They come to ahead, dragos sends them on a mission with a little smile (I think he knew what would happen)....and it's a story of two very dominant individuals who struggle to submit to each other. THATS IT. This anal stuff and the comments about "I wish he would stop hitting her"?? C'mon! They had TWO fights. They are NOT HUMAN. Neither "won" the fight and neither were so damaged that it felt like more than a gnat had hit them in the forehead. One scene Quentin seemed to have dominated. The next fight some (and final fight between them as enemy's) had Aryl pinning HIM....amd they BUST OUT LAUGHING. The mention of anal? It was Not a sex scene....it was "dirty talk"....Quentin laughed about her mention of it...I felt it more of a question or "possible" question pods to see if he, another dominant, would be willing to submit. THATS WHAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT. Two dominants bumping heads with each pushing the other to submit. The two sex scenes between Aryl and Quentin I've read this far? They didn't even GET to the deed!!! It's been about using a timer so that each has a chance to be the dominant. No weird sex stuff....just a good rough kiss scene that left them wanting more....and talk of increasing the time limit lol. Lots of debating on 30min next or an hour...but NOTHING so far....I got to the line where question admitted he may be mating with her. I'm leaving lots out as to not spoil this....but what Aryl said. :) buy his book folks. If your a true paranormal reader you will understand. This author managed to take a harpy for god sake....and turn her into someone who's loved...she made her vulnerable when needed....even romantic at this point (for a harpy) without allowing Aryl to lose her edge. I'm VERY pleased with this book. If the end has a "kinked" sex scene or two I've yet to read :) well dammit so be it. THIS is paranormal romance. THIS is a story of a HARPY.....this is the only way, and done WELL....to have her story told. I'm pleased. If you don't like it....go buy some harlequin or raid your grandmas shelves for some 18th century shoulder teasing.
