No Surrender is the true story of an American WWII soldier who escaped a Nazi POW train and fought in the French Resistance, rivetingly told by the man himself.
A paratrooper in the 101st Airborne, James Sheeran was just a kid when he floated into Normandy-part of the historic invasion that brought more than a hundred thousand Allied soldiers into Nazi-occupied France. He survived D-Day only to be captured by German forces. Barefoot, starved, and sleep-deprived, he was forced on a marathon march, exposed to fire from American fighter planes, and herded onto a train to Germany.
But, using his jump knife, he carved his way out of the boxcar and leaped into the countryside. Stumbling into a French village, he found his way with the aid of the underground network, and fought alongside a guerrilla faction of the French Resistance.
This gripping account of war-torn Europe is, ultimately, a story about humanity's capacity for self-sacrifice and remarkable endurance. Here Sheeran shares not only the details of his extraordinary wartime experience, but the private thoughts that guided him in his darkest moments. It is an unforgettable memoir that will speak to anyone who has faced adversity and refused to admit defeat.

From Publishers Weekly
Readers will marvel at the heroics of this 19-year-old paratrooper after he floated down on D-Day into Nazi-occupied France. In this account of courage and endurance, Sheeran (who died in 2007) was a private with the 101st Airborne when he was captured by the enemy, rounded up with other POWs and marched through American bombs and aircraft strafing to a German camp, chatted up by Axis Sally, and herded before the French in Paris for Gestapo newsreels. He covers it all: the starvation, the exhaustion and hopelessness of captivity, and the suffocating boxcars of the prisoner train. Eventually, the plucky private and his pals escape into the dark and freedom. Each of Sheeran's chapters is devoted to a grander feat of daring than the last—joining the Resistance, battling the Germans toe-to-toe, repeating the same feat his father performed in the previous war. This is a moving portrait of a humble man who was awarded a Bronze Star and named a chevalier of France's Order of the Legion of Honor, going on after the war to become a respected New Jersey politician. Loved This Book
By S. K.
As the tale unwinds, it's clear that Sheeran's larger than life personality and gut instincts allowed him to live to tell the tale, but it was his attention to detail and story-telling style that made the tale really come alive. This was a great, in-the-trench true story that took you to many locations in the European theatre. It was full of funny anecdotes, a huge cast of interesting characters, and a great deal of historical context that even the most well-read and seasoned historical buff would appreciate. Sheeran clearly had a large reservoir of emotional fortitude and I like that he didn't sensational the gore of combat. The truth was gory enough and more hard-hitting for it being matter-of-fact.
It was almost an unnecessary added bonus that there was a great story arc here. This is unusual for a piece of non-fiction. I don't want to spoil anything, so suffice it to say that this book is much more than a well-told WWII memoir.

No surrender a World War II MEMOIR
By Eric Shuler
No Surrender A World War II Memoir was one book I could not put down.
The story is about James Sheeran , a 101st Airborne Division soldier during World War II. He jumped on D-Day but was quickly captured by the Germans.
The book tells the story about his capture and his escape. It is very exciting and you would think it is a novel but it is a true story. His parents were from France and he actually had relatives in occupied France. He fought with the French Resistance and put his military knowledge to work by showing the resistance fighters how to shoot, and maintain the weapons that were sent in by the Allies.
There is a wealth of detail in the book about his war time experiences. I felt I was with him hiding in a French barn trying to avoid capture by the Germans. The members of the French Resistance were not very trustful of outsiders and he had to prove that he in effect was a American.
The story continues when he is repatriated to the American Army. He is told that he could return to the
States because of his ordeal. James Sheeran instead chooses to fight the decision to send him home. He is allowed to stay with his 101st unit and is promoted to Sergeant by the . the officer in charge of his unit.. His next mission is in Operation Market Garden, the airborne jump in the Netherlands in September 1944. (eric, check date)
The battles of Operation Market Garden are very graphic and you imagine the intensity of the battle. He describes his friends getting hit by enemy fire and it is very descriptive.
I wish I had met Sgt. James Sheeran. He lived in West Orange , New Jersey which is a half hour from my house.. Most World War II veterans are humble about their wartime service . It is only late in his life that Sheeran told anyone about his wartime experiences..
This is one book that I wish they would make into a movie. It has all the elements of a good story. The amazing part of the story is that it actually happened.
The only addition I would make to this fine, readable book is a map of his wartime travels.

An amazing story of a man willing to create his own luck
By Nicole
I had the unique pleasure of hearing bits of this story as I was growing up, and the overwhelming honor of having James Sheeran for a grandfather.
When I was growing up, I heard this story and believed my grandfather to be the luckiest man alive. The story is almost magical, the kind that one would be ashamed to submit to a publisher were it a work of fiction because the twists and turns of the story are so unbelievable. For those of us in the Sheeran clan, the mirabelle has come to be a symbol of our seeminly starstruck lives-- anyone reading this memoir will clearly understand why.
Our times could certainly benefit from even a bit of the exposure I was so lucky to have to this remarkable member of the greatest generation. His devotion to honest evaluation of himself and his choices, his unwillingness to accept a world that didn't live up to his lofty ideals, his incredible loyalty, and his near inablility to consider anything but what he believed to be the morally right decision-- all of these often lost ideals are evident in his writing.
It is a real treat for WWII and particularly 101st buffs. He manages to have a story that encompasses multiple jumps, fighting with the Maquis, important information gathering missions, and capture by the Germans. For someone seeking a good story, or with a bit of a romantic streak, here we have a story that reaches across generations with an incredible intersection of his life and his parent's-- and a glamorous night out with a movie star in London. For any reader, the story is deeply satisfying.
