One Sweet Ride, A Review for the Blog Bodice Rippers, Femme Fatales and Fantasy

Jaci Burton is taking her sports themed series away from the Riley family and amongst friends.. Another author taking us into a subseries (my new word) But let me tell you, this book holds true to Jaci's sports themed series and sizzles.. (trying to think of a race car analogy but am totally lost..)
One Sweet Ride is book five in Ms. Burton's Play by Play series and each one seems to be better than the last. As a girl who grew up in a sports centered household, I get a total kick out of these individuals.. people who seem to have a love and passion for the sports around them. It's fun to put strong women in an atmosphere that is traditionally run by men and the world of NASCAR is at the top of that list!!
Evelyn Hill is smart, sexy and oh so smooth.. she has a job to do and no one and no thing is going to stop her. So when she enters the world of NASCAR to convince her boss' estranged son to step back into the fold she is stunned when he turns her down and walks away.. Not a woman to let something like the word no, get in her way.. Evelyn calls in the big brass (mom) and before she knows it her engines are running and she has no clue how to stop this ride.
Gray Preston walked away from his father when he was forced to choose between the life he wanted and the life his father wanted for him. Years later he hasn't forgiven the man and no way is he going to go on the campaign trail no matter how attracted he is to his father's aide. Life is complicated enough on the NASCAR circuit and no way does he want to let the man who disowned him use the life he has created for his benefit (a lot of pronouns there.. he one.. Gray, him... Gray, he two...Gray, his Dear old Dad)
Sweltering, sensuous sensation!! family dynamics and careers collide! What a great story.. love comes in so many different forms and to watch a couple come together in such dynamic situation was simply fabulous. Gray has so much to learn about life and forgiveness, can he manage to forgive his father and discover the man he has become? Can Evelyn find a way to love Gray without destroying her career? Can either of them figure out that they need to work together and compromise?
These two are both the go big or stay at home types.. that means grand gestures and fun stuff.. but they don't always listen to each other and their hearts.. Jaci is writing a beautiful series here and one worth spending some time with.. Even if you don't enjoy sports.. every woman has a secret crush on at least one athlete.. admit it...

One sweet disappointment!

I have been waiting for the next book in this series to come out for a while.
And after Gray's introduction in previous books in the series, I had high hopes for his story.
I just don't understand how you can so totally mess up such a great concept!
The characters fell flat. I think Gray had more "character" in the brief glimpses we had of him in previous books than he does in this book.
And Evelyn. I felt nothing for her at all. And she really jumped into sex with Gray like it was her occupation, not like she was totally in love with him.
All they ever did was have sex. Even for a book where you expect a lot of sex.
But what REALLY made me dislike this book was when Gray took Evelyn to NY for the "first time". WHAT?
Who goes to college @ Georgetown, works in DC for a SENATOR, travels the country extensively for political campaigns, and has NEVER been to NYC? Who? Who!!!!

A little too much and yet not enough...

I have been waiting for the next book in this series to come out. I have read the entire series except for the first book and I have really enjoyed them all. I found One Sweet Ride to have a great concept (I love fast cars!!!) but 2 things really got to me. 1... is I felt you could do so much more with the characters. Especially since we were previously introduced to Gray and there are a lot of connections to be made. I would have liked Gray to ask more questions about Evelyn especially her childhood. The book dove into Gray which I like but I didn't feel it was reciprocated. Possibly even more interaction with Evelyn, Gray, and his whole family. We got his dad's view but nothing from his mom which was interesting since you were led to believe both Evelyn and Gray were close with her and she was the matriarch. 2... I felt like every chapter had a sex scene which got to be too much. Instead of adding to the book, I felt like you lost something in the storyline. While I liked the hints at future characters and story lines, I again felt that it was too much on the surface (just thrown in) and we could have done without them. They actually made the women sound immature and childish, holding on to grudges. I am still really looking forward to Drew and Carolina's story even though I didn't connect with Once Sweet Ride!!
