About the Author
Gillian Bagwell grew up in Berkeley, California, and began her professional life as an actress, studying at the University of California Berkeley and the Drama Studio London at Berkeley before relocating to Los Angeles to pursue a career in film and television. She moved into directing and producing theatre, founding The Pasadena Shakespeare Company, where she served as artistic director for nine years, producing thirty-seven critically acclaimed productions.
She united her life-long love of books, British history, and theatre in writing her first novel, The Darling Strumpet, based on the life of Nell Gwynn. Her second novel, The September Queen, is the first fictional account of the perilous and romantic odyssey of Jane Lane, an ordinary English girl who risked her life to help the young Charles II escape after the disastrous Battle of Worcester in 1651 by disguising him as her servant. Gillian recently returned to Berkeley and is at work on her third novel, about the formidable four-times widowed Tudor dynast Bess of Hardwick. Not So Darling After All

I normally prefer HF set in Tudor or Elizabethan England, but went for a later period with this novel, as Charles II was such a rogue and had SO MANY women in his life, I thought to learn a bit more about Nell Gwynn, his famous mistress raised from the streets of London to the king's bedroom. Author Bagwell obviously has great affection for her subject, but her clear liking does not translate well to the reader. One can hardly fault Nell for the disadvantages she faced being raised in a brothel and quickly finding her only means of support in that profession. Due to her native wit, talent and good fortune, she is able to catch the King's eye which results in a lifelong liason between them, evidently based on real affection and shared experience over time. Unfortunately, neither Nell nor Charles comes to life in these pages. We hear about births, deaths and marriages; we are told what people are thinking and given direct quotations from their writings; historical events are dutifully recorded and are overall accurately reported. Nonetheless, the overall effect is quite drab and unaffecting and the spectacular events such as the Fire of London and the great plague seem more like newspaper reporting than the emotionally-charged depiction one would expect in fiction. For a much more gripping tale set in this same time - also about a lowborn (albeit fictional) woman becoming Charles' mistress - try Kathleen Winsor's 1940s epic "Forever Amber" as a far more colorful account. Finally, as might be expected in a work about a professional prostitute, there is lots of pretty raunchy sex play detailed throughout which seemed to be included strictly for prurient interest. I was put off by what appeared to be the author's grab for the "best seller" status, as it surely added nothing to the narrative. Easy reading, but nothing for the permanent library.

3.5 Stars...I Love The Title, I Love The Cover and I Wanted To Love Nell

I love this cover, I think it's gorgeous, the title is perfect and Gillian Bagwell is obviously well versed in the history of this period.
But I have to be honest, I wanted to love Nell and see the way all of England loved her. But I didn't feel England's love or anyone else's love.
The novel starts out strong enough when Nell, a poor oyster monger, decides to leave the home of her bitter and unloving mother for the whorehouse where her sister sells herself. Nell is a clever plucky girl with a sharp wit and soon is selling oranges in the Theater Royal.
I enjoyed the details of Nell's life when she worked selling oranges and when she worked as an actress but I didn't feel that any of the characters came to life, not even Nell.
There was a vast breadth of history incorporated into this novel, but in my opinion, very little depth. There was a fair amount of graphic sex, which I think was sometimes appropriate given the period and the subject of the novel. However, there were times when it felt like the sex was too much and a bit on the gratuitous side.
There were two scenes that in my opinion were way over the top and had me rolling my eyes a bit. One has to do with Nell's skill at love making and the other has to do with the way a particular revenge was taken. I didn't care for the story-line involving Jack, the evil tough, from Mrs. Ross's brothel. The drama created by him felt overblown and incongruous with the rest of the story.
If the character development and the emotional depth of the characters had been greater I would have enjoyed this story much more. It often felt like the author was telling rather than showing the reader. A variety of people told Nell how much she was loved by everyone and by all of England, but again I didn't feel the love.
It seemed like the author was having a bit of fun writing this novel and I can appreciate that. Nell Gwynn is obviously a historical figure near and dear to her heart. Perhaps if I had a greater familiarity with the politics and the players during the reign of Charles II I would have appreciated this novel more. Though I did enjoy the story more when the characters grew older and had diminished libidos.

The book starts with 10 year old Nell trying to fins something to eat and trying to stay clear from her drunken mother. King Charles II is making his return to London and the people are in party mood but Nell is more worried about getting something to eat. She ends up losing her virginity to a boy in exchange for money so she can buy food. She later tries to get more money from a group of boys that doesn't end up well. Nell's older sister Rose is working on a brothel and she convinces Madame Ross to take Nell in. There she meets group of actors and becomes fascinated by them. When she gets an opportunity on stage she is delighted. While on stage she catches the eye of the king whom she has met before and is surprised when he remembers her.
Having never read about Nell before I was really interested to read this. I'm still not sure how to feel about this. It wasn't bad but I think it still kept lacking that something. Can't say if it's the book or the fact that I'm not that interested in this time period and don't know much about it.
I liked Nell: she was nice, likeable girl who was to determined to have better life. But I also felt like she was too nice. All liked her and if they didn't they were clearly bad. I'm pretty sure she did something unlikable sometime...
I knew it had quite many sex scenes and while I understand that since Nell is a whore I think there didn't have to be so many of those. And I really didn't need to read in so many details 10 year old having sex twice (okay there were more guys involved but still) on the day she loses virginity. But I'm also happy that it wasn't too sanitized because she was after all a whore.
What I really missed was to know how she felt when the queen was accused plotting against the king. The thing was mentioned, Charles flew into rage and that was it. It would have been interesting to read Nell's thoughts about the matter.
I liked Buckingham and how he and Nell were friends. She didn't seem to have many friends at court so that was nice. But I'm still wondering if they were friends in real world?
And I liked Charles Hart and he was so adorable. I just wanted to shake Nell and get some sense into her to stay with Hart.
All in all it was enjoyable read and I'm curious to read the author's next book to see if it goes in the same lines.
